I love being able to experience Virginia wines while living in a different state and I love having my membership benefits when I do visit the area. The staff at Sunset Hills vineyard has always been welcoming, knowledgeable and hospitable. In addition, they are great with managing my shipments and account from afar and they make it easy to customize a shipment if you prefer different wines than they are offering. Their food service is great for pairing, I absolutely love their ciabatta bread and warm cheese spread with honey. My favorite thing to do is stop in, taste what is new and share a bottle and some snacks with friends while enjoying the views. Whether I am enjoying live music inside in the winter months or sitting on the deck or outdoor covered area in the summer months, Sunstet Hills Vinyard is my happy place to unwind.

We were warmly greeted and service throughout our visit was friendly and engaging. Wine - oh the wine - I had a Viognier and then a Cab Franc (no flights but tastings at the bar) - both were great - especially the Cab Franc. While they don't have food service per se, we put together a terrific charcuterie board from the packaged selections they carry. Unfortunately the bottles of wines to purchase are little above my price range, but I'd definitely go back for another glass or two.

However the tasting room more than made up for it. Cozy, charming and good people watching. In the winter there appears to be cute little wood burning stove inside. I saw that they used Real Solo stoves burning actual wood. Not some sad propane fire pit -- actual crackling fires. That kind of detail tells you everything about how this place operates. I love a good camp fire! The wines were genuinely good, and the staff made the experience even better. Super helpful with recommendations and clearly know their stuff when it comes to guiding you through the selections. There is pizza. It's available, but it didn't really deliver on quality -- stick to what they do best, which is the wine. If you are not in the tasting room, you can bring your own food. We LOVED the cats that casually wandered (snuck) into the tasting room like they lived in the place. They were super friendly and would walk past. On a clear day I imagine the outdoor space with those views and a real wood fire is pretty unbeatable. We'll definitely be back when the weather cooperates.

As for wine - the Cab Sav and the Cuvée are my absolute favorite bottles of wine. I serve it at almost every dinner I host and everyone always raves about it. Definitely add this one to the list while you're on your winery hopping trips in VA. You won't be disappointed.

The lacquered salmon wasn't at its best this time, but it was still pretty good. Their assortment of desserts is always well presented, and everything on the buffet stays fresh. The staff constantly comes back to refill the trays with eggs, bacon, fruit, cheeses, and plenty of other choices. I heard the Belgian waffles were a little heavier and not as light as usual, but I typically avoid waffles at an all-you-can-eat brunch anyway--they're mostly filler. If waffles trip your trigger, though, they're there. It's a little pricey, but if you stick with the beef and fish and have a couple of good platefuls, you'll leave full and feeling like you got your money's worth. Magnolias continues to be a dependable choice for a family brunch.

Accordingly, I recommended it to my parents for a special meal, and round two was not as good. We were sat upstairs, which detracted from the ambience substantially, but worse was our server. From the moment she greeted us, we could tell she did not want to be there. She brought red wine in white wine glasses and a bread basket with only three pieces to a table of four people. I pointed this out and requested more bread, so that each of us could have a piece, but she never returned with more as she agreed to do. (Eventually a different server brought us more bread upon second request.) After food was served, I don't recall seeing her to check in until we'd finished eating. Absolutely unacceptable when you're waiting on a table that's putting down more than $250 before tip. Food wise, pretty happy. Fried green tomato was good; pincaha was salty but well cooked (chimichurri overpowering); duck was nice; and pastas were rich. I'd be back but specify that I want a table on the main floor, not upstairs between the bathroom and kitchen. I'd also be on the lookout for the redheaded waitress with the chip on her shoulder.

They took care of every detail, asked the right questions, dealt with all personalities and made sure our day was smooth sailing. On our wedding day, it was rainy in the am and our decorator wanted to move the ceremony indoors. Lori talked to her pilot friend and told us we'll be fine. Little details like this made me feel supported. Jimmy was amazing at herding the cats from 11:30 am to 10:30 pm. That's a skill, Overall, we had an amazing day at a beautiful venue with beautiful people. FYI we got married September 2025 so I'm overdue for a review by a long shot but to this day, I couldn't have asked for a better team to help us through the experience.

But actually Shadow Creek is in the spirit of North Virginia's hunt & wine country. Shadow Creek is a converted horse trailer that caters to Weddings and large events. They are located high on a hill overlooking the rolling countryside surrounded by horses & cows grazing. They have indoor dining room with seating for a group of almost three hundred. We were enjoying a wedding at Shadow Creek with friends and family. The cocktail hour was in a large rectangular room adjacent to the large dining room. They had two bars at both ends of the room, but was challenging to move from one side to the other through the standing crowd. The dining room was fairly large and the sound system for the band was actually very good considering we were in a once horse trailer. Overall I found the place unusual, but it surely a unique for a wedding.
