Even though I no longer live in the area, Sunset Hills Vinyard is the one winery in the area that I maintain my membership to. I love being able to experience Virginia wines while living in a different state and I love having my membership benefits when I do visit the area. The staff at Sunset Hills vineyard has always been welcoming, knowledgeable and hospitable. In addition, they are great with managing my shipments and account from afar and they make it easy to customize a shipment if you prefer different wines than they are offering. Their food service is great for pairing, I absolutely love their ciabatta bread and warm cheese spread with honey. My favorite thing to do is stop in, taste what is new and share a bottle and some snacks with friends while enjoying the views. Whether I am enjoying live music inside in the winter months or sitting on the deck or outdoor covered area in the summer months, Sunstet Hills Vinyard is my happy place to unwind. read more

Such a beautiful vineyard in Loudoun County. Lots of seating available outside for our fall winery day over the weekend. It's also dog friendly which is a plus as I was able to bring my dog to join us outside. We ordered a bottle of their Riesling and some ciabatta bread with cheese that came in a tub. The ciabatta was nice and fresh and the spread wasn't too bad either. It was good to have that as a snack while sipping on our wine. We ended up getting a bottle to go as well since I enjoyed the wine. Lovely place for some good views and wine! read more

An amazing winery ! This probably is our favorite ! So glad we stopped, the grounds are well kept and very nice. We did notice seating outside and in different areas. They did have live music outside. As you walk up the stairs and open the door, it's WOW how nice it is inside, plenty of table seating and some very comfortable looking loft seating, we did not get a chance to explore unfortunately. This was our first time at Sunset Hills Vineyard and absolutely loved it!!!! The service was excellent, the various wines were amazing and their Ciabatta bread was outstanding! We met two ladies who asked us to share their bread, they also ordered the Brie/Honey/Walnuts with it, unbelievably delicious!!!!! By far the best bread and Brie combo I have ever had! And Doug, our attendee or whatever he is, was the best person to provide us service! He was knowledgeable, kind, and a great personality. Very funny and sold us on a few drinks. The location is great! Far enough to enjoy the view but close enough that Ubers weren't crazy expensive. They had live music outside of the patio. Beautiful vineyard just a 10 min drive outside of the town of Purceville. I had great service at the tasting bar, and since I am a wine enthusiast they let me try more than just the pours on the tasting menu. In particular I appreciated the opportunity to compare 3 different Chardonnays: oaked, stainless, and concrete fermented. Ultimately the Cabernet Franc was my favorite and I took a bottle home, but the concrete Chardonnay came in a close second. As the name implies there are beautiful sunsets here, so I will be back again soon to enjoy a glass or two in one of their provided Adirondack chairs on the lawn. They also feature several tables and private spaces in the tasting room, so it is a great stop for a winery tour group (with reservations). read more

My husband and I came here for their Cabernet Franc event. We've been going to their sister winery 50 west for quite sometime and thoroughly enjoyed the event at Sunset Hills. Sunset Hills has a nice location with ample space to enjoy the day inside and out. They're eco-friendly (solar powered). They have a friendly staff who are more than happy to answer any and all questions you might have about the vineyard and the wines. I tried a red flight that included a cab franc, petit Verdot, tannat, and a red blend called Sunset Red. All were pretty tasty, but nothing really stood out as a clear cut favorite. Ranging from $32-43 makes Sunset a little pricier than some of the competitors, but not overly so. I recommend giving them a try and spending an afternoon on the upper balcony! Sunset Hills has been on our list of wineries to check out and we finally made it there on Friday. The first thing I noticed was how beautiful the facility was, both inside and out. We decided to enjoy our tasting on the balcony overlooking the vineyard and lake. There were 3 flights to choose from: white, mixed, and rose. I've never seen a flight of all rose wines, so I convinced my husband we had to do that. We also shared the white flight. Both flights had sparkling wine which is a huge plus in my book! The wines were enjoyable but not memorable, and we weren't tempted to purchase. However, I could see myself coming back here for the ambiance. Last time we were here was several years ago and it was just an 'ok' visit, so while in the area, we decided to stop in and give them another try. First off, this is a BEAUTIFUL winery with lovely property! When we walked in and were immediately greeted by a lovely lady who welcomed us there and took us to their bar to go over their offerings. We tasted a couple of wines and selected a few glasses to sit & sip while watching the sun set over the mountains behind their venue. That sunset is amazing too! We sat upstairs, inside, near the deck. The wines we got tasted really good. The venue is beautiful, very nice timber-framed tasting room and service was friendly! I came to Sunset Hills at the recommendation of a friend who is VERY well-versed in Virginia wines, and I'm so happy I came. My mom was in town and it was the perfect cozy getaway. I had never had a wine and chocolate pairing, and found it to be perfect. I'm not usually a huge fan of ports, but the port and chocolate combination? HUGE fan. The woman who poured for us was truly delightful and, although the place was quite busy, took time to describe each wine and talk to us. I ended up buying two bottles of the sunset white, which has a really floral nose that almost smells like purfume, but tastes tart and more like lychee than the sweet floral scent might belie. The space is lovely, and it was perfect on a dreary cold winter's day. I would love to come back and see whether I actually like port or if I just like chocolate! read more

Beautiful winery. Excellent building. We did the tasting and had a bottle of cab franc from 2017. Everything was decent. I personally liked their petite Verdot was my Favorite. The NV dusk is the real star of the show. Aside from that not overly memorable wines in the tasting but not overly memorable. read more

Gorgeous location especially on a fall day, Sunset Hills has the cute views you want and a great food menu to match. Unfortunately we were not a fan of their wines, only liking the Rose and the port wines and actually did end up pouring out many of the wines in the tasting. We did the tasting in the outdoor pavilion and the lady leading it was as kind as can be but the wines just weren't to our taste. The whites were acidic and the reds smelled and tasted sulfur like. We enjoyed our rose and matched it with a brie plate. The food options range from cheeses, to make your own picnic basket, to paninis- there is no shortage of food here. The baked brie was absolutely amazing and I would eat 100 if I could, especially paired with the rose. Kids allowed, your own food allowed, beautiful outdoor space but not a lot of indoor space so I wonder how everyone fits in the winter. Maybe other vintages of wine will be better but definitely rather come here for food. read more

The vineyard it's self looks like a country barn. It is casual, quaint and relaxing. I like that they have live music often. We tried a bottle of the Sunset Rose which was light and refreshing. Not our first time here at Sunset HIlls but one of the nicest, they serve a wonderful menu matched with various live music events. Before covid the tastings were always good and never a bad selection. Since we are a bit more experienced in their wines we decided to skip the flight and go right for the Red which was such an easy drinking wine, very bold flavors as well a light lingering after taste. A wonderful way to end our trip to the mountains with an afternoon of live music and sunset hills red wine. I have been to many wineries and this is by far one of the most professional one around! The staff is friendly, not snobby but they are also very put together, knowledgable and welcoming! Their wines taste amazing. I liked all of their reds AND whites! My best friend just became a wine member and it definitely has its perks! She was able to get us a free tasting and since she was a member she didn't even have to wait! They also have reserved areas for their members to enjoy their time at their facility. I recommend becoming a member if you live in the area. Unfortunately, I do not live near this winery but I really wish I did! Like I said we did a tasting, ordered a bottle and ordered food. We ordered a bread basket, salami, gouda cheese, burrata with balsamic and tomatoes, and a chocolate truffle assortment. We were a little disappointed in the truffle assortment. It came with four little pieces...wish we ordered the chocolate bar since it was significantly cheaper...so if you want chocolate - get the bar! Anyway, the experience was amazing! They had live music playing and the musician was great. He played some really nice country songs and we appreciated it. However, we were the only ones clapping when he finished a song! 2018 Review 85/100 During a recent vacation to Virginia, we spent a day touring various wineries and Sunset Hills was our very first stop, on the recommendation of our Airbnb hosts. At the end of the trip, it stood out as one of our favorites. The tasting room is inside a barn. It's beautiful. Great atmosphere. The staff is very friendly. We stopped in on a weekday and there was no one else there, which was nice because we received personal attention and were able to ask a lot about the wines and the vineyard. We learned a lot. And Sunset Hills had some of the best wines of any of the wineries we visited on our trip. We ended up leaving with a bottle of the Rosé of Cabernet Franc. I'm usually not a huge fan of rosé because it can get too sweet. But this one came recommended by the lady who was walking us through the tasting (it's usually not on their tasting menu but she let us have a try) and it was lovely. Great local vineyard doing great things and I hope they continue to do well. We'll definitely stop by again the next time we're in the area. read more

I had a brief opportunity to taste and enjoy the wines of Sunset Hills. We arrived just prior to closing but the staff was very accommodating and friendly. My sister is a club member so tastings were free. The property used to belong to my sister's friend before they sold to the current owners. They have done lots of work to make this winery as gorgeous as it is. We sampled 6 wines on the tasting list as well as 2 years of their port wine(Dusk). The wines were very tasty. I enjoyed the Sunset White( 80% Traminette 16% Vidal Blanc 4% Viognier). This was by far my favorite because of the sweetness. I also enjoyed both years(2012/2013) of the Dusk(port). Both were very different yet quite tasty. The vineyard has lots of parking, some renovated building, and a very welcoming tasting room. There appears to be lots of seating. Although it was near closing and we didn't get a chance to enjoy a glass of wine or taste the food, I have heard that they serve a nice assortment. We hope to be back soon. read more

Great scenery, lovely outdoor spaces, and decent wine! I love escaping the sprawl of suburban NOVA to enjoy a little bit of green space and some refreshing drinks. We sat under the pavilion on a very hot and steamy Sunday afternoon, and we only tried the Rose and Chardonnay. The Chardonnay was not so great (a bit oaky for my taste) but everyone agreed the Rose was spot on. It was really too hot to drink any reds outside so we stuck with Rose for the duration. The tasting room had a private event going on, so we just stuck our heads in on our way out to check it out. I don't know if they are still serving wine slushies, but I wish I had checked more reviews ahead of time so I'd have known to ask! The location is good, it's easy to get to from NOVA, and while it is a little closer than some other vineyards, it's still far enough out to feel like an escape. The tasting room is open as of July 2020, but they aren't serving food yet. You can bring your own food to the covered pavilion (1-4 guests, which requires a reservation) or to any of the picnic areas (no res required). Nice music under the pavilion--not so loud as to be disruptive but good background. read more

One of my favorite tasting buildings in VA, and one of the biggest producers in northern VA. This place is always busy, so be prepared for crowds and some noise. The wines are good, but I think the main attraction is hanging out on the expansive lawn or the renovated barn/tasting room while listening to live music. A great place to go with a group, but perhaps less so if you want an intimate tasting experience. The barn deserves special mention. Lots of historic knic-knacks abound, and the building was renovated by Amish craftsmen. The bar is equally well made. The grounds also have plenty of space, including a covered firepit. All in all, lots & lots of moolah was spent to make it a sight to behold. I arrived on their anniversary weekend, so this tasting line-up had several members-only wines which I'd never had before in addition to some 'regular' ones. However, even the 'regular' tasting menu is pretty good. Whites / Rose: The steel-based Chardonnay was nice, but a tad woody for me. The Rose was fairly sweet, but the Dawn Sparkling Rose was less so. Reds: 2012 Mosaic Bordeaux blend was outstanding; although at $50, it better be! As much as I loved it, I'd think hard before buying a bottle at that price. The 2012 Nebbiolo was good, with a slight fruit palate. The 2014 Cab Franc was also good (my previous favorite of theirs was their 2013 Cab Franc). Rounding out the tasting was the 2014 Petit Manseng ice wine, and a mulled wine made with Chardonnay. Both were good; in fact this might be the first white-based mulled wine I've ever had, and that says something. Prices here are on the expensive side. Still, it's worth it. read more
