Otium Cellars is a gem worth the drive from DC. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We visited on a rainy day so we missed out on what looked like a vast and gorgeous outdoor space.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]However the tasting room more than made up for it. Cozy, charming and good people watching.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]In the winter there appears to be cute little wood burning stove inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I saw that they used Real Solo stoves burning actual wood. Not some sad propane fire pit -- actual crackling fires.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] That kind of detail tells you everything about how this place operates. I love a good camp fire! The wines were genuinely good, and the staff made the experience even better. Super helpful with recommendations and clearly know their stuff when it comes to guiding you through the selections. There is pizza. It's available, but it didn't really deliver on quality -- stick to what they do best, which is the wine. If you are not in the tasting room, you can bring your own food. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We LOVED the cats that casually wandered (snuck) into the tasting room like they lived in the place. They were super friendly and would walk past[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. [[HIGHLIGHT]]On a clear day I imagine the outdoor space with those views and a real wood fire is pretty unbeatable.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We'll definitely be back when the weather cooperates. read more

A perfect wedding venue. Friendly and generous management. Beautiful grounds. So many options for events and lodging.

There are a ton of wineries in VA, but this one always holds a special place in my heart. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's never overly crowded, it has a gorgeous view, and the wood cabin style lodge is incredible on a snowy day.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] As for wine - the Cab Sav and the Cuvée are my absolute favorite bottles of wine. I serve it at almost every dinner I host and everyone always raves about it. Definitely add this one to the list while you're on your winery hopping trips in VA. You won't be disappointed. read more

My friends and I ended up here on a Saturday evening to kill some time before another event. We got a bottle of wine and a pizza to share. The wine, a Gruner veltliner, was great. However, the bottle that the server brought to us was warm room temperature (this is awhile wine that is meant to be served chilled). We then asked for an ice bucket or some kind of cooler, and she brought a chilling bucket that not frozen and just dripping water everywhere. Then to excuse herself, she tried to tell us that the winemaker does not serve that wine chilled. There's just no way that that is true - no winemaker who can make a white wine as high quality as that one believes it should be served warm. So we were absolutely unimpressed with the staff and the server. [[HIGHLIGHT]]However, the loft is very cozy and we had it all to ourselves.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The pizza was also very good and as mentioned, we live over the wine once we finally got it chilled a little bit. But I doubt we'll be back anytime soon. read more

[[HIGHLIGHT]]The best part about Otium is that they are very dog friendly. Pups are allowed inside the tasting room, which is nice now that the weather is getting colder[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. I was disappointed with the wines. I usually like gruner veltliner, but there's was a bit metallic. The rose was decent and the Pinot Gris was drinkable but unremarkable. The reds were definitely better than the whites. The Blaufränkisch was interesting and a grape I'm not familiar with. The Malbec was okay but had a bit of a strange finish. We went with the safe choice of the Cabernet Sauvignon. Our bartender was super friendly and let us taste a bunch of the wines. The food options were limited. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We sat outside and the vibe was just gorgeous -- peaceful, rustic scenes. Our view was the rows of vines, a cool sculpture art piece, and rolling hills with cows and deer grazing.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The Figgy pizza was incredible -- nice thin crust, fig, chorizo, bacon, spinach... it was delicious. Excellent wine, incredible service. I took my wife out for a signature tasting experience and we had a blast.

This was stop number two for us. This winery was a little off the beaten path; literally, you drive in on a dirt gravel road. The winery was rather dead for a beautiful Saturday afternoon. We got flights and glasses of wine along with some paninis. The food was very good. The wine was our least favorite of the 4 wineries we visited that day. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. One of the worst experiences I have ever had at a vineyard/ winery. I really wanted to try this place since they billed themselves as a German style winery. Too bad we never got to actually find out. We walked into an empty table area with a small bar in the corner. There were three servers milling about and one serving a couple at the bar. No one greeted us, and they seemed to to do their best to ignore us as much as possible. After standing at the bar for a few minutes, we asked if this was where we should order any tastings or food. One server grunted a yes response. Then we asked if we could see a menu, and were rudely told to use the QR code on the tables. Great- if there was actually cell service. It was abundantly clear at this point that we were not welcome here, and left without a second thought. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time here, there are many better wineries and vineyards to go to in the area. read more

I visited Otium Cellars with a group of girlfriends and my 17 month old daughter this past Sunday. The winery itself is gorgeous!! I could only imagine it on a sunny, vibrant, Summer day. I ordered the red flight and enjoyed every second of it. Their wine selection is really really good. However, the menu is a bit lackluster. There isn't much to choose from and not many vegan options but if you choose to get anything, go for the pretzel and mustard!! It's amazing. The customer service is just okay.. nothing major or special, the staff did their job and that's it. I'll take it. I will say it can be kid friendly if you're able to sit outside. During the colder months, the inside has fire places that a tiny person can't really reach, but one of the staff members were really on edge with phrases like "not on my watch" even with me standing WITH my daughter and holding her hands to watch the flame. There is a loft and also a bigger back area of the winery with more seating and another bar area. It's really nice and I plan to come back in the warmer months to enjoy the view and good wine. read more

The new (ish) owners have done a lot and made this a great place to relax and enjoy the food and wines. We sampled a flight of reds and the rose. We enjoyed all of them but the Malbec and the Blaufrankisch Reserve really stood out from the tasting and the rose was fantastic. We went home as wine club members and bottles of all three of those. The pizzas were also really good - the Figgie pizza was not only amazing it's really unique and a must order. One of the other notable things was how nice all of the staff and owners are. Otium Cellars is a little winery nestled in Purcelville. The grounds looked large and beautiful... we even got to sip our wine in the sun next to the vines which was surely a delight. Currently, they are offering two wine flights (no changes/swapping unfortunately) to glasses to bottles. Wines were okay but I do believe they changed management in the last few years so I am curious to see what they may taste like in a few years. Even though we came on a weekend, it did not get very busy which is good for social distancing and feeling a sense of calm while enjoying your wine. read more

As I write this review, I am wondering if this was just a fluke experience because others have had a good experience here. Unfortunately for us, we were not part of the cool kids on this visit. My friend and I had just left Bluemont and decided to stop here next on our winery hopping day after seeing that the winery was listed on a list of the top wineries in the area. I will admit that the ability to BYOF (bring our own food) was extremely attractive. We walked into the tasting room and walked up to the counter and were greeted by a young lady who at first just stared at us. Then she asked if she could help us and I advised her we were there to do a tasting. She retrieved glasses for us and slid two tasting menus in front of us . Their tasting glasses are huge so imagine my surprise when she poured the first wine and it was like a swig in a glass, not even a full pour. I was surprised that the bottles did not have pour tops on them so our "taste" was subject to poor. I swear it was the smallest taste that has ever been poured. Unfortunately no one else around us was doing a tasting so there was nothing to compare the pours to. Needless to say, I do not think the pours were adequate for a tasting. There was just barely anything to really taste, so it was a disappointing. We both opted for a glass of what we could tel was the best option, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, and headed outside to find a table to sit out. It was a nice day outside so the weather was perfect. There is plenty of seating both inside and outside as well as a stand alone gazebo that you can sit in as well. Tables we clean and spaced out enough to where you had some privacy between you and the other tables around you. You can take in some views although the location is not as picturesque as some other vineyards I have been too. It was a nice touch that a young lady did come by to check on us and see if we needed anything. I cannot say that I would come back here, nor recommend this winery to others. I just did not get that warm and fuzzy feeling. read more

A lovely winery featuring established German wines, which is rare in Virginia. Scenic views of surrounding hills and vineyards and a variety of seating both indoors and outdoors on the expansive patio with fire pits for cooler weather. The winery is family friendly and dogs are allowed outside on the patio. There are two friendly winery cats in residence who will come up for scritches and attention: We tried the German/Austrian wine tasting and the chocolate wine pairing featuring chocolates by The Conche in Leesburg. I must say, the German wines are outstanding - the Gruner Veltliner is juicy and crisp but not too sweet perfect with the strawberry and black pepper white chocolate. Similarly, the Blaufrankisch with its cherry notes and soft tannins paired beautifully with the cherry and pistachio filled chocolate. We also enjoyed the soft pretzel twist that comes with a delicious mustard dip that has a good horseradish kick to it. They also serve pizza and other food which we didn't try. Servers were friendly and able to tell us about the history of the vineyard and the winery. read more

Well, about all I can say is "we got out of the house & took a drive." Fall colors were drab and disappointing, but still better than the wines, which were remarkable only for their mediocrity. (We picked this place because our friend had been here with his German wine group & liked it.) 3 (stingy) flights + 2 appetizers , tax & tip = $110+ (*avoid* the "charcuterie" board: it's basically 1 slice of prosciutto, 2 slices of pepperoni, a warm pretzel & some mustards.) The food took so long we'd finished our flights before it ever showed up, and nobody who visited our table was the least bit interested In bringing us anything else. The patio was (as you'd expect on a beautiful autumn day) busy, and we ended up seated *much* too close to the "singer" & his speakers. But we got outside on a beautiful day. read more

My husbands brother-n-law brought us here for a wine tasting in November 2017. After 30-45 minutes on the grounds we decided that is where we wanted to be married. We got married here on September 2018. It was absolutely perfect!! Chelsea worked with us to make our day perfect. All we needed to decorate were the flowers and that was just because I choose to. No decorations are needed The only negative was the bridal suite/Airbnb wasn't as clean as expected. However, it is a beautiful space and my bridal party did some quick cleaning to make it more cozy. Over all, this is gorgeous property and the wine is fantastic. If you want a simple elegant wedding this is the place for you. I want to thank Chelsea and James for helping make the wedding process so much easier! read more

What a lovely winery! I recently saw Otium on NBC's list of Top 5 VA wineries (http://www.nbcwashington.com/blogs/worth-the-trip/Top-5-Virginia-Wineries--305273011.html) and knew I had to stop in for a visit with my usual wine adventuring partners: my husband and our best friends. We stopped in on an abnormally scorching July Saturday and were immediately taken with the view coming just around the bend right before turning into the property. We also noted they have a huge screened in area with couches and a giant fireplace we will HAVE to re-visit in the fall when it's not melt-your-face-off-hot outside. After taking pictures with their bear greeter (seriously fun photo ops here, they also have a huge metal rooster overlooking the vines) we ventured inside to the small tasting bar. I was initially surprised to see several limos in the parking lot and not feel cramped inside, but upon looking for the restroom I realized that's because they have a huge second tasting bar with long communal tables just down the hall for large groups. Smart! We were offered the option of being seated for our tasting and really felt like the staff catered to us from start to finish. Absolutely fantastic customer service! I know very little (ok fine, basically nothing) about German wine so it was really exciting to hear about all the different grapes and blends they make on site. They are also one of the very few (maybe only?) VA wineries to have a Pinot Noir in their collection, so that was excited to see also. Sadly, they sold out while we were there-but it was really good, so I can see why! I was most impressed with their signature wine- the Blaufränkisch and also absolutely loved their sparkling Riesling. They have various meats and cheeses, spreads, flatbread and brownies available for sale, but also allow picnics (inside and everything!). Otium is also dog friendly and sits on a working equestrian facility, so there is a lot going on all at once. It is well worth the trip and while I may not agree with the rest of the list, I do agree with NBC on this one, it is definitely one of VA's best wineries! read more

Decent winery not far from Leesburg VA. While this wasn't my favorite place during my little wine tour in the area, this place still stood out for its solid offerings and cozy tasting areas. The main tasting room has a nice counter area where you can sample their various vintages for $10. We went tried 8 different red and white varieties and walked out with two bottles of our favorite wines. Personally I was a fan of their latest Pinot Gris .. it has a great aroma and a wonderfully light finish. Aside from the main tasting room, there was also a little separate area with cozy chairs and sofas. A lot of people bought bottles and enjoyed their wine there, which has a nice little view of the surrounding area and some live music as well. This place is a little out of the way compared to some of the other wineries in the Leesburg area and is practically in a town that's not far from the VA/WVA border. But if you're in the area and want to check out a surprisingly pleasant little winery with friendly people, you can't go wrong by stopping by at Otium. read more

There are many wineries within a short distance from my sister's house. We had finished at Sunset Hills and yelped other wineries that were still open past 5:00pm. It was early Spring and the wineries were not too crowded. Otium had good reviews so we drove over! They located past Franklin Park and you have to drive down some in paved roads. There was ample parking since it was late in the day. The tasting room had a small tasting bar. Since there was four of us we had a chance to squeeze in with other tasters. Some of us like reds and some only like whites. We split a couple of tastings. The staff was friendly but he was serving a few parties so it was hard to get detailed information on each wine. The wines were good but nothing memorable. They sell a nice variety of snacks: nuts, cheese, crackers and meats! We picked up a little of everything. He told us about the live entertainment so we headed over to catch some late afternoon music. Seating was available at the other venue. It's has a huge fireplace and a great place to listen to music, enjoy a glass of wine and munch on snacks. read more

Otium is a very unique experience, even for someone who's been to lots of Virginia wineries. It feels very much like a piece of Germany relocated to Purcellville, down to a German style log cabin, several German style wines, German owner, even German sausages! Very scenic picnic area, adjacent to a horse farm (but don't touch the horses) and with a gorgeous and very dog friendly tasting room. While it's production is relatively small right now (15 acres of vines/2500 cases), Otium has tremendous aspirations. They intend to have up to 50 acres of vines, and are well on their way to be 100% estate. Until then, they get lots of grapes from elsewhere in VA, as well as Washington state. Most of their whites are estate, but a lot of their reds use a combination of VA and out of state grapes, and they also have 'guest wines' from Germany (when their German varietals run out). I was assisted by Sean, who explained the owner doesn't like to do anything that's easy. Given many of their grapes are very non-traditional for northern Virginia (Geuner Veltiner, Blaufankish, Dornfelder, all German varietals) at the expense of traditional VA grapes (Cab Franc, Petit Verdot, Viognier), I can see why he said that. He even tries growing Bordeaux varietals you don't see often in these parts, like Malbec and (not longer) a Pinot Noir. Whites: 2015 Geuner Veltiner; crisp, apple palate. This bottle was from Washington State, but their own grapes are on their way. Next year this should be 100% estate. 2014 Pinot Gris; very...different. Not sure how to describe it, except that I wasn't a fan. 2014 Chardonnay; steel fermented, but didn't enjoy it 2014 Chardonnay Reserve; little toasty, slight creamy finish; pretty good Reds: 2014 Blaufrankisch; German varietal very rarely seen. Nose and palate reminded me of liquorish. 2013 Merlot; Nice black cherry nose, little spicy. Mostly VA fruit but with some fruit from out of state 2013 Malbec; super spicy nose! It was like sniffing a pepper dispenser. Spicy finish as well, but not as bad as the nose. Also mix of VA and out of state fruit 2014 Dornfelder; surprisingly smooth and flavorful red, which I'd never tried before. Easily my favorite Don't forget snacks; they get meats from Lothar's Sausages, a German butcher in town. Loved the sweets too. read more

We're not engaging or overly friendly , just rattled off some info. Didn't enjoy wines all that much; maybe it's because the whole experience kind of left a little bit of a sour taste in our mouth's, wines included... They have absolutely no sweet wines. Don't go hungry because there is no edible food. Sat outside and not a single staff member in site. Went inside and the orange hair girl talks with her eyes closed and another girl in the corner on her phone. Zero customer service for the price they charge. Otium Cellars has a lovely atmosphere in which to spend some time on a lazy Saturday afternoon. I love the wood throughout the main tasting room. It resembled a log cabin and was just, in one word, cozy. I will say though, I wish the tasting bar had been slightly lower. As a 5 foot 1 shortie, I had to stand on my toes to reach the bar comfortably. Also, driving up to Otium Cellars, it is a very narrow road, so be sure to proceed with caution and take your turn. Also, on a logistical note, it is pet-friendly inside the tasting room so if that is not your cup of tea, you may want to rethink a visit here. We were immediately greeted and given a brief introduction on Otium and that they are known for their red wines. After completing the full sampling, I would say the reds were far superior to any of the white wines we tasted. A tasting is $10 per person and includes 8 wines. The Gruner Vehliner had a crisp, citrus flavor with hints of apple. I preferred the Gruner Vehliner to the Pinot Gris, which also had fruit notes but was more bitter and not a favorite of mine. The Chardonnay was steel-fermented and had a slight hint of honey. I didn't care much for that wine either. The Chardonnay Reserve had a very buttery, creamy taste, and was probably my favorite of the whites. The Blaufrunkisch was my favorite red wine. It had a strong peppery taste that was balanced out with subtle cherry notes. The merlot was less peppery and was full of rich plum flavors with subtle hints of black cherry. The Malbec, which was my next favorite red, had layers of both blackberry and plum with more subtle pepper spices mixed in. The Dornfelder was a nice way to end the tasting. It was quite smooth and had lots of fruit flavorings, including plum, cherry, and blackberry. While we didn't decide on anything to have beyond the tasting, I would absolutely return in the future to relax and enjoy a full glass, most likely the Blaufrunkisch. read more

I first came to Otium Cellars about 2 years ago and was struck by the great service, fantastic wine and really cozy place! The whole ambience is a wood cabin and there are plenty of nooks and crannies to hang out and enjoy a glass of wine. They have snacks such as cheese and meats, but they also allow you to bring in outside food if you want. I did a flight which included 8 wines (3 white and 5 red). That's a pretty fantastic deal for decent sized tastings. Every single wine that I tried was amazing and I would be happy with a glass of anything that I bought there. Their reds were especially tasty and unique. I'm a German wine convert for sure after trying this winery! read more

I found this winery on a list of top wineries to visit in Virginia. I think I kind of understand the appeal: it's very scenic, there are horses, the wines are pretty decent, and the indoor tasting room and outside area are both nice. Those are the positive aspects. Now on to why I won't give it 5 stars. The customer service was lacking when my two friends and I visited. We walked in and there were three employees at the bar. No one greeted us. Ok. No big deal. One guy was pouring wine for 2 other customers. I don't know his multitasking abilities or his life. The other two looked busy, but I couldn't quite figure out what they were up to. We waited for an extended time and no one acknowledged our presence. I finally had to say something, stating that we would like to do a wine tasting. The younger woman asked for our ids, which we promptly got out and showed. We then waited for her to pour our wine. She disappeared (I thought to get our glasses) and came back to tell us that someone else was going to do our tasting. We then walked over and found a table while they shuffled staff to accommodate us. An older woman walked up to us, didn't greet us, and said, "IDs please:). I quickly told her that we had already shown them to the women at the bar. Ice stare. "I'm asking you." Oh. It's like that. We showed our ids a second time. Then began a strange wine tasting. She very rarely made eye contact, seemed uncomfortable the whole time, and almost always spilled a few drops when pouring our wine. All in all, I think there are enough wineries for me to visit in Virginia that this one won't be at the top of my list to revisit. read more

This was my first winery on my first trip to Virginia wineries. As we were driving up, I couldn't help but look at how gorgeous it is. The only downside of going on a rainy winter day was that we could not enjoy all of the outside facilities. I really liked the space itself. Now as I mentioned before, it was a rainy December day which is (I presume) a very different experience then the summer or when the weather is nicer. It felt like a cozy little cabin and I liked that there were lots of different areas to sit. I really enjoyed doing the wine tasting. The mulled wine was absolutely delicious and what I got for after. If you want a snack, the spiced feta and crackers are perfect! I'm really happy that this was my first foray into the Loudon wineries as it was a really great introduction. read more
