She was in the Independent Living section during her first nearly-three years, and that's where the majority of problems transpired. There was a significant unresponsiveness of "in charge" personnel on multiple occasions: #1: One time my mother fell in her apartment and fractured her wrist. She called me and I got the Security guy to go up there, and he had an aide sent to my mother's apartment - but even though I'd already arranged for my nephew to go there and take my mother to the hospital, the aide *refused* to wait (a short while) until he arrived. #2: Another time, an aide forgot to go to my mother's apartment to dispense her medications (fortunately I was able to get a nurse from the Assisted Living section to go to my mother's apartment). #3: Another time, an aide became angry that my mother had already taken her pills before the aide's arrival (my mother had waited much longer than usual), and the aide - in retribution - didn't dispense my mother's next pill (which was *dangerous*) and she also didn't put out my mother's lunch foods (the latter needed to be done temporarily because my mother's broken wrist hadn't yet healed). Fortunately that aide was fired - but another time, the aide never went to my mother's apartment to dispense the morning pills. #4: My mother was erroneously billed for several things and multiple people kept refusing to delete those charges from her monthly bill (I handled all of those things - but the amount of time and effort required to contend with all of that was absolutely inexcusable). North Oaks has been under new management for more than a year and the situation seems to have improved - and admittedly it's probably a better place than many other facilities, which is why I'm giving four stars when otherwise I'd only give three. Meanwhile; during the 6 2/3 years that my mother lived in the Assisted Living section, there was a significant shortage of personnel during much of that time and a significant turnover of senior staff - although to be fair, covid had commenced about 3 1/2 years prior to my mother's death and therefore the former situation was typical everywhere. A few of the nurses worked there for a long time and they were wonderful. However; the ongoing staff shortage necessitated my needing to hire private aides ten hours/day for about the last 2 1/2 years of my mother's life, because it wasn't safe for her to be left alone for most of 24 hours/day - and she'd fallen in her room and broken her hip when left unattended for several hours before I'd hired the private aides (and I'm still devastated to remember that she was crying out for help and it took eons for someone to respond), so that was the precipitating factor in needing to hire private aides. Needless to say, the cost of those aides was exorbitant when combined with the cost of the facility.

My grandparents moved here and had an absolutely horrible experience. From the moving process, to…read morehaving property stolen, to being uprooted for renovations and moved into a dysfunctional apartment, to the abusive dining staff (only in the early morning when the families aren't around to witness - but I did), to the management that puts residents off expecting they'll forget the problems or just give up because they're old... this place is the pits. Living there was hell for my grandparents and certainly not a welcome experience in their late stage of life. North Oaks does a very good sales pitch and presented quite well but after the money is in the bank, the contract's signed, and a few months into the daily life their true colors start to show. After moving out. receiving back their "return-of-capital" returned took an excessively long time and required much follow up. Moving into this property was my grandparents' final plan. The stress that living there caused gave my grandfather health issues and lowered their quality of life. We wound up moving them to another (IMO far better run and significantly cheaper) retirement center at their request despite the cost and hassle because the conditions wound up being too hard for them there. Moving again caused them further hardship. Be very wary when considering this property for a loved one. Things aren't always how they appear to be from the outside.

When you think of a retirement community you may be one of the people that thinks of a sad place where people are put to be forgotten. That's certainly not the case at all with Edenwald. It felt like a bustling community to me. More than once I thought "I wouldn't mind ending up at a place like this someday." Security wise there is a person manning the front desk at all hours of the day. Ask that person for the guest Wi-Fi password. There is a lobby where you can sit and wait for people where there is also a gift store. I didn't see it but apparently they have a fitness center and pool here. On the activity board they have a listing of all the activities that are taking place on site. They also offer multiple day trips to interesting sites around the area. If you don't want to drive to do errands they will take you places such as Trader Joe's. They have multiple restaurants on site. I got to sample two of them. One of them was a casual cafeteria. The other one was what we called "the pub", which serves alcohol. There is also a fancy pants restaurant across from the pub, but they enforce a dress code. I wasn't doing backflips over the food, but it was much better than I expected and I enjoyed my meals. I thought the nicest thing about the living quarters was that once you go inside and close your door it just feels like an apartment. You have a fully stocked kitchen, which is nice. Even though you have your privacy there are ways in the bathroom and bedroom to alert the staff that you need help. All the amenities in the world wouldn't matter if the people weren't treated right. I have to say I was constantly interacting with friendly people. Multiple times on the elevator the residents would be cracking me up. One man told me that he hoped I wasn't going to the 25th floor because that was his private penthouse. If you have an aging relative who wants their independence but could use the safety/security of assisted-living I can't think of a better place then Edenwald.

When walking my mothers dogs, John Dressel, who supposedly works for Heartlands, (he did not have a name tag on to identify that he actually works for Heartlands) runs over to me and ask where is my mother, who is in rehab and is my mother staying at Heartlands, I told him she stays here at heartlands but I do not know if she will come back. He then ask am I staying there, I told him sometimes and now until I can make determination on her moving out. He then says you are not on the lease. I ask is this for sure, he says I don't know boy, I then ask him what did you say, he says is nigga better without the r, I step back and say I served honorably in my country, I'm an American too. He then says I served too, that does not work anymore. At this point I asked to speak to his supervisor, he then yells, I am the supervisor. I say sir leave me alone, I'm just helping out my mom, he then tells me to "get off the property or I'm going to call the police". I then go to the front desk and ask to speak to his supervisor, he now says the supervisor is not in and that he is going to call the police on me. I then walk off and go to the police station in Ellicott City. I explain to the officer on duty at the front desk the exact same as I'm writing now. I explain that I have to get my mom belongs. I was then told to go get the belongings and if the police come to explain that I'm getting my mothers belongings. I felt threaten by John Dressel and concerned for my life. When I brought this matter up to the front office staff of Eveline Craig, Katie Morris, Kionna Harris, Sherri Sitler, I received no response regarding this matter. Why would anyone want there love one to be exposed to such a toxic environment. That kind of language from John Dressel should not be spoken to anyone. PS. I reported over two month ago of a mixed Asian and Caucasian woman who is heavy set and always wears calf socks constantly watching me asking about why I'm in the building as if she worked there which I was told she did not and was a resident. I was told by Eveline whom works in the front office that it was not personal regarding asking me why I was there by this resident. Yet clearly I was being watched despite me setting up care for my mother living at Heartlands independent housing, despite me telling the front desk staff and office that I was rearranging matters for my mother to find proper care and place to stay, despite the fact that on the contract it has my name as paying for everything. Also the front desk staff receptionist (middle aged Caucasian woman with blond hair) yelled at me on several occasions when I called asking if my mother was ok as I did not hear from her and was not in the building nor area for several weeks yet they attempted to pretend that I was there in the building all the time. They employ a company called Capital City Nurses to assist some of the people who live there in independent living, a women by the name of Binty of African descent with dark hue who is married and was assigned by Capital City nursing to assist my mother repeatedly came late to give my mother life saving medication and on several occasions ask me to buy her a burgundy bag, flirted with me, yelled at me as if I was a child at random intervals after refusing to buy her anything. Also an outside organization assisting with in home care, physical therapy unrelated to me named Bayada reported to me that they found my mother's prescriptions lying on her living room table with the pills scattered out of the container on the table. I reported and documented this to Capital City nursing and they ignored everything. That's the kind of lousy care and selfish behavior you can expect from this organization and associates.

Physical therapy told my husband and I that I would never walk again and stated that I really neededto be trained to live in a wheelchair. To make a long story Short, I am now an outpatient physical therapy. Though I spend time in a wheelchair, I am learning to walk and will be able to do so with a walker independently. Additionally, the medical Director came to my husband and I and told us that I was dying, and should be placed on hospice. that was two years ago. All of my doctors are completely confused as to why he would've came to that conclusion. When we refused hospice, and refused to accept that I could not be taught more independent living, they discharged me. The facility itself is beautiful. It is clean and well-managed. However, they did not provide what I needed from them. Have they done so, I believe that I would be further along than I am now. Again, the good news is that I am progressing dramatically at this point.

It was arranged for her to go to Lorien Mays Chapel. I am writing to tell you that Lorien Mays Chapel was very disappointing and that my mother dramatically deteriorated there. Although they say the right things and have a lot of staff with all sorts of titles, they are really not set up to manage elderly women with dementia. They put her on a vigorous regimen of PT and OT which wore her out and there appeared to be a complete disconnect between their administrative staff like the dietician and their floor staff. In fact, the latter were more concerned about their break times and getting food from the small luncheonette there than with my mother. Lorien Mays Chapel has a good reputation and I think that for relatively healthy young to middle aged men or women who just need a little PT or OT, it is probably fine. However, for older individuals who need more care and attention, in addition to PT and OT, Lorien is not the place to send them. Seeing my mother deteriorate so quickly at Lorien, we managed to get her out of there relatively quickly - weak, very disoriented, and on oxygen 24/7. After returning back to her assisted living facility where they are better setup for her issues, she is much stronger and active again.

Noely asked detailed questions regarding my mom and her needs which was greatly appreciated. I was met with such warmth, kindness, and patience from the team. This facility is OUTSTANDING and the lobby mirrors a hotel. My sincerest apologies team. I could've saved you all time by advising that my mom required hemodialysis, but it was such a pleasure meeting the three wonderful ladies. I can tell that they are passionate about their work and care. Noely took the time to reach out to a sister facility that could accommodate my mom's needs and I am forever grateful. She gave me such reassurance which is invaluable for caregivers. I would encourage anyone in need of care for a loved one to come in and visit this facility.

How is this acceptable? The two staff people I encountered during my 2 hour visit seemed very pleasant.

In the past two years my wife has needed to go into a Rehab enter. The first time was two years ago…read moreafter she had back Surgery. They put her in a facility near where we lived. The facility was nice and seemed to be well equipped but seriously understaffed. It often took a half hour to an hour for an aid or nurse to respond to her call requests. Facility okay, staffing an issue. This time she after having fallen many times in our unit she was hospitalized, They decided to send her to a Rehab Center in Anne Arundel County. This place, though highly rated by Medicare was awful. It was a rather dingy facility in which you were immediately overwhelmed by the smell of urine and feces! It also took an hour or longer for anyone to respond to her calls, often she was told just to "go in your diaper" until we have time for you! The PT/OT facilities were bare-boned and she received barely more than 20 minutes of one or the other during weekdays. And on one of those days they had a group session instead of individual treatment where none of her Rehab needs were addressed! This place was so awful I found myself crying to myself, feeling guilty that she had to stay in this disgusting facility! I fought for and finally received the OK to transfer her to Lorien, Elkridge! I can only describe it as like going from the worst Motel 6 in the world to the Carlton-Ritz! Lorien Elkridge in a very welcoming, clean, well-equipped facility. And the staff, including the those working the front desk, are very welcoming, responsive, kind and caring!! She rarely waits more than 5 to10 minutes when she request assistance. They seem to be eager to get whatever she needs and often do the same for me. The nurse in charge, is on the ball and is willing to put up with my inquires of her medical treatment and requests from me to obtain specific treatments and/or mess (I will admit that my career with the FDA as an expert in both Medical Devices and Pharmaceuticals does give me an unique knowledge base.) She gets OT and PT every weekday, often for as long as an hour each! I can't rave enough about this facility and its staff. If you live near Elkridge you definitely would want to send your loved one her if they need rehab. Heck, even if you don't live near here, I would still recommend you check this facility out.
