What a charming little wine spot. Recently in town where and stumbled upon this small wine spot with plenty of fantastic affordable wine options. Chill coffee house type live music and complementary wine tasting when we were there. We loved the bottle we bought, and we're able to bring in our own snacks from the cheese shop next store that had amazing spreads olives crackers vegan options. This might be the perfect place to get a glass/bottle of wine. Chrissy and Rick are genuinely warm and welcoming people, and the Friday night tastings make for one of the best social hours in Wilmington. The store, a Euro-small and cozy brick space on Castle Street, gets the most out of limited square footage by eschewing the big-label SKUs that you can find at dozens of other stores, opting for hand-picked wines that can match most palates. This needn't, however, translate to "expensive" (although the high-end selection is excellent), as the store routinely features specials and carries well-chosen varietals priced for daily drinking. Local art (often for sale) adorns the walls, making the whole scene lively and enjoyable in a remarkably unassuming way. Heck, name another wine shop that lets you bring your dog. As mentioned earlier, the store has an on-license, so consumption of the wine that you've just purchased is allowed, encouraged, and, frankly, a great deal of fun. There's a bar in the front of the store and a large patio out back, making the place a delightful place to spend the afternoon or early evening out with friends--and inexpensively at that. Sunday mimosa days were a favorite of mine when the wife and I lived a block from the store, often following coffee and brunch at delicious Jester's Java right next door. There's a regular cast of neighborhood rogues, so good conversation abounds. Don't care for wine? There's a cold case with a nice and rotating selection of craft brews and imports. Beer by the six-pack is also available to go. The selection is not huge, but, like everything in the store, it is chosen with care and good taste. In any case, if you are ever near the Castle Street Antique District, make a point of finding this tiny shop with the tiny sign. Heck, make an excuse to go even if you aren't. My wife and I love this place and stop in frequently when in town. After today, we love this place even more. We were on a house tour when we decided to stop in for a drink. Minutes after arriving, multiple gunshots rang out across the street. This store is in a safe place so the shots were not expected at all. The woman working (I think Tammy) who is always great to customers, immediately called the police while having my wife lock the door to make sure that all patrons were safe. She also went to the door and let a frightened young man in while still on the phone with authorities. Once the immediate threat was over, she made sure to ensure that everyone had a drink--not for business purposes but to help calm the nerves of the customers. Knowing that we were in a place we love visiting while seeing the person working do everything she could to make sure her patrons were safe and secure was very cool. We will certainly continue to patronize this place...and continue to feel safe while doing so. read more

I'm honestly hesitant to write this review. I don't like to speak ill of small businesses, but in this instance I think it's worth speaking up. The owner kicked out my dad and told him never to return. To explain further, my father went into Wilmington Wine a few weeks ago to find a bottle of cheap Spanish red, which is his favorite every-day drinking. Now, he doesn't usually go in there because he doesn't like that they don't put prices on their wine, but he needed something to go with dinner. He asked the owner for a cheap bottle of Spanish red and the guy hands him a $20 bottle, which isn't cheap and especially not for Spain. Had he asked for a cheap Oregon Pinot this price point would have been appropriate. At this point, my Dad brings up the fact that he would like to shop there more but finds it off-putting that they don't put prices on their wine. The guy grabs the bottle out of his hands, points out the door and tells him to get out and never come back. This seems like a pretty extreme response. I'm sure that he doesn't like someone being critical of his practices, but man if I owned a small business I wouldn't ban someone from my shop unless they were truly being disruptive. While Wilmington is growing rapidly, this is still a small town and people talk. I used to work as a wine rep and have called on many bottle shops. I even talked to my old coworkers to ask them about their experiences. We have NEVER seen any shop NOT put prices on their wine. Have any of you? I did decide to stop in and feel out the situation myself. I didn't get to meet the owner- his father was covering for him. His father was absolutely lovely and we did truly enjoy sitting with him and going through a tasting. He apologized for there not being prices and offered to help us figure out pricing on any bottle. They do have a nice selection of wine. I see that this place has a lot of support in the community, but if you are willing to kick someone out for questioning your extremely questionable and suspicious practice of not putting prices on your wines, then I have no problem taking my business and support elsewhere. And unfortunately for them, you've just given my dad a good story to tell to everyone he knows in downtown Wilmington. read more

I've only been here a couple of times, but it's always pleasant. The place is a little on the small side, but it's cozy and intimate. Since it's a small establishment there's only one bathroom, which can be a bit challenging if the bar is full. However, this one small issue isn't a big deal when considering how awesome this place is overall. The owner is super down to earth, the patrons are fun, and the wine selection is superb. This very quickly became my favorite spot in town and I can't wait to go back. Tip: If you'll be hanging out for awhile, I definitely suggest you spring for a wine glass. read more

Walked in to pick up a few bottles after a nice dinner close by. We were greeted & proceeded to ask about pricing. None of the bottles had any pricing & knowing what I like, went straight for the reds. The person that greeted us proceeded to point out a specific a wine and asked if we liked that style, when telling him no he still went onto push that wine on us and related wines? We already know what we like and didn't like that varietal of wine. When I pointed to a bottle wine and asked what the cost I was never given a direct answer. His answer was "this row is in between this price range" but when I asked again how much for this particular wine he again never gave me a straight answer. A local store that delivers wine- yes please! So much more fun than any gift basket or flower bouquet! I called from SWFL, gave the sales associate a budget, an idea of what I wanted, my credit card number and my friends' address. From soup to nuts, this gift giving went perfectly. Ok, I admit it. You can sometimes find me wine shopping at World Market. I take chances on wines I've never heard of because of the prices. I'm not always pleased. But I'm always glad when I go to Wilmington Wine. It's really no more expensive and you have a much better shot of getting a winner.
