My family recently stayed here, and I was not impressed with the accommodations. We were definitely looking forward to our stay at Oglebay, and other parts made it worthwhile such as the lights and the zoo, but this lodge really needs an update. Our room in the lodge was small and very tight compared to most hotel rooms these days. There was visible dust in the heater unit, and in the corners on the floor, and there was mold in crevices in the shower. On top of that, the swimming pool seemed really filthy and the water was murky. On the flipside, the fancy restaurants seemed lovely, though quite expensive. We only dined at the coffee shop and other nearby restaurants. If you are going to Oglebay, I'd recommend staying at another nearby hotel. read more

The lodge itself is nice, the rooms are clean and adequate for a two night stay. So far the friendliness or helpfulness of the staff has been lack luster. Not all, but many, go around looking like they hate their job, which doesn't exactly give you that warm, welcome,holiday feeling that many probably expect, or at least hope for, when visiting here. Stayed in the west wing of the lodge for a wedding. Convenient outdoor room access when on the first floor with plenty of parking. We were able to have an early check in which was a great help with our itinerary. The room was clean and had plenty of amenities for our stay. We stayed at Oglebay this weekend while our son's basketball team was at a camp at West Liberty University. It was a great choice as it was conveniently located and made a weekend away for basketball feel a bit more like a vacation! Our room in the Upper West section was updated, comfortable and roomy. My only complaint was that the floors could be cleaner and the shower had a good bit of mildew/pink mold around the edges. The rest of the room was very clean though. We enjoyed dinner at the Glassworks Grill later on Friday evening and it was very good. My daughter and I had breakfast at the restaurant the next morning. The portions were huge and the food was good. Well worth the price. We visited the Glassworks Grill again for drinks on Saturday evening. The service throughout the resort was excellent. I have been going to the Wilson lodge since I was a little girl. Everyone is so friendly and the premises are always very clean! The lodge was made decades ago, but they keep everything up to date! They keep the lodge feeling cozy and like "home". I can remember as a child going to breakfast with santa at the lodge. I am not sure if they still do that now, but it was a highlight for our family to all get together and have a nice breakfast there! The restaurants inside the lodge are very delicious too! It's not the cheapest price for a room at the lodge, but it's worth it for a getaway. You can enjoy the oglebay outdoor pool, community pond with boat rides, an indoor pool inside the lodge, putt putt golf, parks and during the winter, the Festival of Lights! It's relaxing, awesome place to go for mini vacations and birthday parties in the park. read more

Too bad negative stars isn't an option. I grew up in the area and dreamt about staying here as a kid. Well? Saturday was the day I would FINALLY get to stay here. I was in town visiting my parents. I usually stay at the Hampton Inn on National Road, but cancelled that reservation to stay at Oglebay Park. BIG mistake! The unit was set to A/C and 60. It was in the 40's outside, 60 inside, turned on the heat and it was cold air. Brr. I called and reported it. Housekeeping came to our room, agreed the unit was not working correctly and called maintenence. We left to get a pizza and returned to our freezing cold room. We ate our pizza and decided to go to the desk. She told us the unit was broken and we needed to move. We were in that room for SIX hours FREEZING and no one told us?? They said they tried to call. Nope. They did not call... they had my cellphone number! No calls. Get to the new (ALREADY USED) room, it was warm (THANK GOODNESS!), the door to the outside wasn't locked, there was used soap in dish, tissue with lipstick in trash, toilet was used (had paper in it), the carpet was nasty, a bug in the tub and tub drain was out. You can't make this stuff up!! I cleaned up the toilet and sink areas myself. I did not shower, because how many bugs were going to come out of the OPEN drain? We won't be back. Oh, they reduced our rate to $69.00. All we went through? The room should have been free. read more

Don't get me wrong, we loved our stay at Wilson Lodge, but we both agreed that it is extremely outdated- especially for the price. We wanted a nice weekend away, so we chose Oglebay. the lodges were a little pricey, so we chose to stay in a value lodge. We ended up with a nice patio and the lodge was clean, however, everything was extremely old in the room and the toilet did not flush well! The bathroom light was on a timer and would randomly shut off while you were showering (and the light was so hot it felt like a heat lamp)! The hallways were extremely warm and ALWAYS had workers in them cleaning. We didn't have a refrigerator, so it was really hard to keep everything cold and we couldn't bring any leftovers back. It didn't ruin our time because we were out most of the day, but for the $170/night price tag for a VALUE room is completely pompous! read more

This is my third time staying at the Wilson Lodge but the first time staying in the lakeside wing. It is super nice and updated!!! Our room had a deck, fireplace, fridge and a LARGE bathroom. We did pay more than a regular room but it was definitely worth it to stay in this wing. The lodge itself is nice. They have a common area that has entertainment in the evenings. Hot chocolate and cookies are provided. They have an indoor pool and 2 restaurants. We came for the festival of lights so we got the festival of lights package. We will be back.... read more

I hate to give any place 1 star, but we want to save other people their time and money. We spent the weekend in one of the 4 bedroom cottages this weekend. Our cottage alone was over $1,000 for two nights. The pros: the cottage slept a lot of people, and the lights were pretty nice. The cons: The cottage was disgustingly dirty (dirty floors, etc). There were lots of spiders on the walls and in the bathtub, dead bugs in the beds, AND mouse poop in the silverware drawers and dresser drawers. On top of that, we had an actual MOUSE in one of the bedrooms!! When we contacted the front desk, they gave us 2 sticky mouse traps to try to capture the mouse ourselves!! We all lost a lot of sleep because the mouse ran around at night and scared some of us. Who wants to sleep when you are waiting for a mouse to pop out of your bed!! read more

I was here for training at the NRPA revenue development and management School. The hotel was the location of the training. Staff are friendly and helpful. Room was clean. There were some small maintenance issues that needed addressed. Staff for taking corrective action on those small items. The food is amazing! You will never go hungry at one of the NRPA schools. The zoo is great for kids. The Glass works museum is amazing for adults. The bartender's in the glassworks restaurant are phenomenal. I was here last year, and 10 and 11 years ago. They've been up keeping the facility and ensuring that they have Wi-Fi access and state-of-the-art TVs in each room.there are deer everywhere so watches you driving in and out of the facility. I was very disappointed for the cost, I expected a great stay. When I arrived, the room was so hot that I couldn't breathe and smelted bad. The mattress was as hard as sleeping on the floor. Those were my first impressions. After going to the pool, I got in the shower and the floor was slimy and there was hair in the sink. I will not be going back. If you want to enjoy Oglebay Park, stick to the Christmas lights and the outdoor activities. I'm sure there are less expensive, cleaner places to stay. read more

A rare municipal park that actually takes the public mission seriously by offering green spaces and recreation places at low cost to people of all ages and classes, Oglebay wows you with its green hillsides, manicured golf courses, deliciously retro outdoor swimming pool, quiet woodland nature trails, and fun-for-the-kids pleasures like miniature golf, paddle boating, petting zoo, train rides, gift shops, ice cream parlor, and deer watching areas. WIlson Lodge is the resort, special event, and conference epicenter of Oglebay, a large hotel, rental cottage, and spa complex that looms over the central lakes area with a mix of old and new: stone walkways, lushly landscaped grounds, plush carpeted hallways, imposing hearths and fireplaces, and lots and lots of Appalachian hospitality with a modern edge mixed in. The area around the historic Oglebay Mansion is especially worth return visits, to enjoy the farm-to-table bistro, the gift shops, the glass museum, the garden shop, and the exquisite flower and herb displays. I suppose that beauty is, in the end, in the eye of the beholder, and I have been smitten with Oglebay since my parents took me there as a toddler. There are literally thousands of positive memories had here, spread out over more than three decades. So, yes, I am not exactly an objective critic of the Lodge or its many hidden corners. I was incredibly happy to see that things at the Lodge are in great shape, with renovations underway to the older room areas and lots of new spa-quality upgrades, in addition to park-wide things like new mountain biking trails on the horizon. If you are in Wheeling for a visit, reserve a few for Wilson Lodge and for Oglebay. It may not be perfect, but as they say in this state, it's "almost heaven," and in this case "almost heaven" is good enough for me. Bed did not have an upper sheet and despite my reporting it four times, all I got was a couple sheets left on the dresser. My wife and I needed to make the bed ourselves. Reported my experience on checkout and received a minimal response of "sorry about that". Seems to be no concern about substandard service. read more

Only getting a two stars because how cute it was decorated!!! We ate the christmas dinner buffet, and it was maybe a step above golden Corral. The only good thing was prime rib, the bread was so hard you could lose tooth. So over priced!!! Don't eat here! Then we went to the zoo, all of the outside animals were out away and it didn't say that anywhere on the website. Just very disappointed in the whole experience besides the lights. Terrible experience tonight ((1/3/20) at the bar today. Walked in with a bite of pizza left in hand. I eat the last bite before I actually sit down in my chair at bar... bartender starts going off on how it's against the law and now refuses to serve me a beer. I thought he was joking as I'm chewing my food. Ask him for a beer and he says, "no, I am not serving you but I'll serve and help your buddy". WTF! I ask Ashley for a beer, she snaps at me and says, "IF HE'S NOT GOING TO SERVE YOU THEN NEITHER AM I!" (Yes, she raised her voice at me). As this blonde male bartender is walking by my every time to serve other customers, he continues to make rude comments about how I thought it was funny that I ate my last bite of pizza inside the bar. He never served me a beer. Apparently he wasn't interested in making money. Instead all he cared about was being a jackass along with his female co-worker, Ashley. Oh by the way... this was after one of the rooms our team was staying in had bed bugs. 2 of our players were attacked and bitten by bugs. But to no surprise, housekeeping was not concerned or in any hurry to switch our room. They insisted on switching the bed sheets instead. Mind you, housekeeping failed to clean any of our 15 rooms we had booked today. STAY AWAY FROM HERE! read more

Picture "The Shining" minus the grandeur and the kid on the trike murmuring "red rum, red rum." Yep, that pretty much sums up Oglebay. Then again, what can you expect from a hotel where the floor numbering starts at floor 5? Bizarre. Let me tell you about the rooms. If you are STUCK staying here, refuse a room in the "old" section...there are several old sections, but these are the rooms with 1960's fake wood paneling, carpet that hasn't seen the a change since Jimmy Carter was president and bedspreads to match. It pretty much gives you the creepy crawlies...more about that later. The walls in that section are paper thin, so late at night the exuberant kids next door AND their TV came through loud and clear. So we went to the Glassworks restaurant and lounge with friends for a while. When we returned around 11:30, the kids were still bouncing off the walls. And then. I turned on the light in the bathroom. The creepy crawlies referenced above? Bingo. Called the front desk stat. Funny, they didn't seem surprised at the news at all and moved us into a "newer" section sometime after midnight. That room was much better (really, it didn't take much to be an improvement), but still not up to standard with more modern (circa 1980's?) hotels. I wish I could at least say you get what you pay for, but that's not the case...the rates are ridiculous for what you get. We stayed there for the convenience of the event we were attending...otherwise, we would have checked out the first night. Never again. Oh. And the Glassworks Grille? Decent bar, abysmal table service. Beware. Room Tip: Do NOT accept a room ANYWHERE in this hotel other than the newest wing! read more

Booked a night here to see the Festival of Lights. Arrived early and we were told the checkin time is 4pm. Went and walked around and came back to registration at 4pm and we were told the room wasn't cleaned yet and that they would call us when it was ready. Went and ate (food was so-so and overpriced) and no call .... back to registration, after a number of calls we finally had a room @ 5:30. I booked and paid for a cottage and they then doubled the price and said the employee that booked me was new and did it wrong even though I had a confirmation with the correct dates. Happy I came, but bot too impressed. Room was about $100 per night. It was well worth that. Place was clean. Amenities were above average hotel, way below average "resort." Gym was above average. I like the gym. Sauna was nice, hot tub however-like warm. Pool may have actually been warmer and hit tub was missing about half it's water fill on Sunday morning. Nice town, decent food around however BEWARE of the places that are DEAD. if no one is eating there--obviously don't go. Pickles was good and Figurettis Italian was fantastic. Ski slope was fun, guess it was worth 50 bucks. Only one slope tho, but it's a decent sized slope. read more

It was a beautiful weekend at Wilson Lodge. It was decorated to the Max. Every room we saw was just dripping with Xmas decor. Fireplaces and Xmas trees everywhere. The Ilendfeld restaurant was lovely we were seated by a window facing the lake and we could see the lights and cars driving through, but I have to say the meal wasn't great. Three-star resort with a five-star experience. My three stars have only to do with the lodge. It is outdated and we found our room to be very uncomfortable. I was told there are more updated rooms, we definitely did not have one of those. Two double beds with very uncomfortable mattresses. The bathroom had a very odd setup with a small area for the toilet and shower that was dark to take a shower in. Our room was never made up after we left for the day. Much of the lodge itself was outdated. The common areas were great but small. If you got to them later in the evening everything was full and you were forced to stand or go back to your room. The set up of the lodge rooms is very confusing. It took us about 20 minutes just to find where our room was. We ate at both restaurants. Great service, decent food, nothing great. There was free Wifi, but it never worked the entire time I was there. The indoor pool was good, enough for the kiddos. The game room was a wasted space, not a whole lot to do and kind of expensive. Everything was very clean. The experience: Went with my family including two young children. Could not have had a better weekend. There was daily activities schedule for both kids and adults. They had one of the banquet rooms set up with toys and a movie playing. In the main lobby area, they had board games and things for families to play. Unfortunately, people don't take care of things that aren't theirs and there were pieces missing out of every game. Around the grounds, there were activities throughout the day that were either free or very cheap. We never sat around looking for something to do. The scenery is spectacular and you can't beat the location. I've heard the golf courses are top notch as well. If you're looking for a fun place for the family, this is perfect. If you're coming for a relaxing weekend, keep in mind there are no frills and nothing fancy. The guests this weekend were mostly families with young children. read more

On a positive note, Oglebay is beautiful. I'm at a training for work. The Oglebay-catered lunches and breaks have been amazing, the Wilson lodge, not so much. Maneuvering around this place is impossible. It's a maze and it doesn't make sense. It is not rolling suitcase friendly as there are random steps everywhere. The beds are pretty miserable, from the super hard mattress, to the itchy, rough sheets and the flat, hard pillows. The water in the shower is barely hot. It's certainly not a good place for more than one nights sleep. Maybe the views make up for it. read more

A little outdated in some respects, the rooms are at least very clean and spacious. The room had a balcony, fireplace, sitting area, soaking tub, and big shower with a towel warmer. We also used every bit of the amenities - pool, sauna, hot tub, massages in the spa, and a number of the guest activities. The breakfast is out of this world, with an array of everything you could possibly want from a sweet or savory brunch. Although Oglebay is a bit pricey, the location and amenities make it a perfect choice for a special weekend with your partner or a fun weekend with your family. read more

We stayed at Wilson Lodge for our wedding night after before going on our honeymoon and the experience was interesting... The room was in the new section, which was good because the room was actually very nice and massive but getting to the room took some work. We arrived at the front desk late and the desk clerk waddled over to the stool out of breath having gone an entire 5 feet from the back room. She then looked up our reservation using the latest in 3x5 index card technology from a shoebox. "Oh your room is the new section" said the clerk, "Which way is that?" we asked, she replied "You go down that way and you may have to take a elevator to get there but I'm not sure I have not been back there yet" (side note: the "new" section has been open for months, I am not sure how an employee just does not go back there, maybe her scooter was broken) We bravely found our way to our room and thankfully there was no elevator that we had to take for we could have been lost in this magical land of the new section which would have no hope of the front desk clerk finding us in. As this was our wedding night and Wilson Lodge knew this from the reservation they went above and beyond at doing nothing. We were not expecting much, if anything, but not even a flower or some chocolate? Maybe it was good thing we did not get any extras as that would have turned into an extra charge, something Oglebay is famous for. Thankfully our checkout process was smooth and easy, we just left. Hopefully, they were able to figure out we only booked the room for the one night using those classic 3x5 index cards, although if the rest of the staff was like the night desk clerk we could of stayed in the room forever as maybe they "have not been back there yet" If Wilson Lodge can fix the staff issues the place is decent, the room was clean and well appointed and plenty of easy parking, just don't expect much from people who can't be bothered to know the property they work at. read more

The lodge is beautiful and the rooms are comfortable. Plan to eat elsewhere for breakfast u less you're an early riser. Got to the dining hall around 9:30 and there was a 30 minute line just to get put on the list that in turn had a 45 minute wait. The kicker is they don't take reservations for breakfast. So you pay to have breakfast included in your weekend package but the tickets are nearly impossible to use (at least when you have four young children in tow). Seems like a rip off. Front desk staff are rude and unhelpful and don't try to hide the fact they'd rather be somewhere else. When I inquired about last minute breakfast with Santa reservations she picked up the phone to whomever is in charge of that and just stood there letting it ring for at least 4-5 minutes.. making it painfully clear without actually communicating that it was too late to get a spot. I finally gave up and walked away saving her the pain of simply telling me it was full. My friend asked the desk staff where the laundry room was and all they would say is , "it's in the laundry area" . Um ok, thanks . read more

Very disappointed in olgebay. Have been staying in a cabin for the last 23 years. They couldn't find my reservation because they spelled my name wrong. This year the cabin needed swept when we moved in. There were lights burned out in the ceiling. No towels at the pool. Really going down hill. read more

Just stayed at Wilson Lodge. The property is very nice. The room we stayed in was clean and up to date. The lodge has a nice restaurant on site for morning breakfast also has a very nice but busy bar on site for evening drinks. There is a nice indoor pool area and plenty of places to sit and talk. There is also a fire pit area as well. The Oglebay grounds are very nice as well. Many places to walk and attractions to check out. Only complaint is the kind of late check-in time of 4pm and are room was not ready for check-in until 4:15pm. The check-out is 11am which is good if you don't want to rush in the morning. Plan to return. One tip to know is the lodge has different room types from basic (in the oldest section), middle of the road and very nice with prices that match the different levels. read more

My wife chose Oglebay for our one year anniversary back on November 22. We had a horrible experience, disgusting stains on the sheets and bath towels. We didn't even stay the night after that and asked for our money back. The front desk attendant said our money would be refunded to our card. To this date absolutely NOTHING was done about it. I gave it almost a month for them to do something before posting this. No money back. No phone call. No email. We will never stay there again. Ruined our anniversary. read more

I am from the area and know Ogelbay well. Beautiful setting but the staff is among the least customer reviews friendly I have ever experienced. Everyone is "no." No, we can't accommodate you by splitting the bill on a couple of credit cards. No, we can't take a brunch reservation. No, we can't help you with your luggage. Etc. etc. etc. I have stayed at fine hotels all over the world and most go out Of their way to be helpful and accommodate guest needs. The entire staff needs trained in the art of guest management. We spent one night at the lodge. I gave a star for the room in the new section and a star for the decor. Other than that we had a bad experience. Our room was not ready until 6pm and the lobby was filled with people waiting for rooms. The restaurant/bar was crowded and the food was bad. The people behind the counter were unfriendly and instead of trying to help they made me feel like they are doing me a favor. The trolley ride for the light show was not good. The driver was very nice and friendly but it was hard to see the lights from the back of the trolley and with the windows fogging. The next morning I had to try and check out twice but after waiting in line for the longest time, I left. I was yelled at later for checking out an hour late. This is a beautiful property and it is sad to see how bad service ruins the stay and leaves a bad taste. This can be a great place to book for a great vacation. read more

8 adults went for a family weekend to Oglebay Park to stay in a cottage. The first night there we found bedbugs. After reporting it, we were moved to a different cottage. You guessed it, several of us were practically eaten alive in the NEW cottage! Not only were there bedbugs in the second cabin, but we found roaches as well. A group of friends meets every year at the cottages located in Oglebay Park. We have done this for over 20 years. The scenery is beautiful, the cottages although rustic and a little out dated, are very spacious. There are 8 double beds in the 4 bedroom deluxe cottages, which are comfortable. Kitchens are lacking in pots, pans, silverware. For the prices of rental on cottages, these things should be updated. The seating areas are not very comfortable and for unknown reasons - in the middle of the living room there sits a round coffee height table, with four chairs surrounding it. This blocks the conversation area. All in all the cottages have the right idea for a get away weekend, but in comparison to other cottages - in other areas I have stayed in, they need upgraded and price adjustments made. Other than the Festival of Lights, there is not any other tourist attractions in the wheeling area. read more

My family rented a traditional cottage (Fern) for the week. Upon entering, the smell was nauseating. The floors were filthy as though a broom/mop has never touched it. The carpets in the bedrooms were covered in debris. One bed had 8 baby spiders under the comforter when turned back. The lighting is very poor in all rooms. We had to burn candles 24 hours a day to just be able to tolerate the musky smell. The entire cabin remained damp the entire stay (July 3 through July 9th). This cottage is in desperate need of a dehumidifier. We attempted to put away our clothes in the dresser but the stench coming from within told us to keep our clothes in the suitcases. The windows in the kitchen and main room were broken so we were unable to open them for fresh air. There was a mop but no bucket. There was a dustpan but no broom. The bathroom tub had mold growing rampant in all cracks and crevices. The "housekeepers" (I use that term loosely) even left tip envelopes for a tip. WTH?!? There is just dirt out front so there is no need to even speak of what happens when it rains. Yes, a gigantic mud puddle right as you walk in due to no gravel. I would highly discourage anyone from rental a traditional cottage from this place. The traditional cottages are very expensive for what you get.
