I visited Oglebay ("Oglebee") with my family this week. The children had a wonderful time. It was a perfect getaway for two quick days. Pros: -- Warm, cozy, family-centric experience with nightly hot chocolate (they call cordial), movies, and bingo. -- So many activities to choose from (horses, golf, skiing, mini golf, racquet club, spa, etc.) but probably not all in the same season. -- Friendly staff and special holiday decor. Cons: -- Resort rates for everything; dining options on site are all quite expensive. -- This place is not new, and is not a 5-star hotel. There will be mold in your bathroom and dust in floor corners. It's rustic, though it isn't intentional. -- The fake ice skating at the Carnival is an environmental disaster of shredded PVC plastic that'll wind up on your kids and in your clothes. -- The pool water looked murky and my daughter's white swimsuit is now yellow. I don't think they clean it often or well. I'm glad we went for the experience. The kids had a great time... but I might look elsewhere for our future trips!

I was considering giving this place a 1 but I'll give it a 2. I thought this would be a nice little getaway weekend trip. We get into our room lodge and first thing you see is lots of dead flies, lady bugs all over everything!! The toilet in our unit has a major toilet clogging issue. People flush baby wipes down the toilet very often. There is a glass tray that sits over top of the sink. The glass shelf is ready to fall off. It is not safe to put anything on it. The pool and hot tub were open but didn't have time to used it. The food places at the resort we have read a lot of reviews and noticed the price isn't worth going. Now the " Festival Of Lights" you are given a map that shows you to go to number 10. Starting point/ Santa Village....this place is traffic from hell. As we were stuck for over a hour. Bumper to bumper stop and go. We finally get to the ticket booth and the arm is down implying that we must pay to proceed. Once we paid, we were given a season pass, another map of the parks, and a reward book. For people that aren't from this state. I'm here to help you out. You DO NOT need to pay them nothing!! Some of the lights weren't working and the lights took 10min. I felt bad for all the cars giving $30 per car. It is not worth staying here or even seeing these lights. Take your money and your family somewhere else... take the drive to see the Caves lights in Kentucky or drive to Powell, OH to see Wild Lights at The Columbus Zoo. Those places are WAY much better to bring the holiday spirit for everyone. Now on a good side you go to the glass shop/ treat shop at night. The big tree is so nice to enjoy while playing music. On the bright side y'all need to go to Perkins restaurant. The food and staff took great care of us. Sara our waitress treated us so kind with great service. Their breakfast was so good! I highly recommend going there. ** Update We told the front desk worker about our stay. They were really apologetic and credit gave us a discounted rate for our stay. They saved us $200. We definitely appreciate that.

The property at Oglebay Resort is absolutely breathtaking! There are plenty of activities for all ages as well as restaurants and a spa. It truly is a one stop shop. The room I stayed in was recently remodeled but there are other rooms that were quite dated. The staff was very friendly. The food was pretty good but not the best I've ever had. The pool was out of service at the time I visited which was a bummer but overall a good place to spend a vacation.

Christmas lights I have fond memories of visiting with my family is a child so I decided to take my children to see the Christmas lights. There is a lot to do at the resort from entertainment in the lodge, shopping, visiting the zoo and driving thru the Christmas lights. The kids enjoyed it but it can be pricey and the line was so long traffic barely moved. Make sure you pack snacks and be prepared to sit and wait.

An expansive adult playground with 3 amazing golf courses, hiking, equestrian fun as well as other activities. We played the Palmer and Jones courses and had a fabulous time. The jones course was much more difficult, but both were in fantastic shape and a lot of fun to play with huge elevation changes. Also, whoever is in charge of the hospitality training at Oglebay is doing their job very well, we felt so welcome at the resort, as well as the Wheeling area in general from the moment we arrived into town!

This is a great place to stay, it has a lot going on to keep you busy. The room was nice and the lodge is clean and comfortable. It has many places to eat and a place to get coffee and a quick breakfast. The price for the lodge is vey reasonable. At least for Christmas it was. Will definitely go back.

Lovely and cozy. The room was in perfect order, and the building was beautifully decorated. The staff was especially courteous and helpful, and my dinner at Trace Chophouse was of good quality (down to the service). I will be staying here every time I am in Wheeling from here on out, instead of choosing Airbnb as I usually do.

Oglebay is a classic old school resort. Like many of these older resorts, the main lodge is a large rambling building which has evolved over time encompassing different wings and amenities. My experience was very positive with a beautiful, newly renovated room with a fridge and awesome balcony. The room was clean and the beds were firm. My only complaints were the toilet ran (not a big deal called down to the front desk for a repair) but the lighting over the vanity was lacking making it very hard to shave. I was there for a conference, so the rates were a little better, I did not use the grounds, pool, or arcade. The conference amenities, rooms, electronics, and food were outstanding. Parking was very convenient to the room.

Great staff. Friendly and professional. Lots to see and do. Take a bit of a drive. But worth it. A few dining options and some merch for kids.

    Brown water

The room felt very dated. There was mold in the shower and the curtains were falling down. The water went out during our stay as we were getting ready for the day. It was brown when we turned it back on. The front desk offered $10 for our inconvenience when I complained. No where to work inside other than your room due to the lounge being repurposed as a restaurant On a positive note, the restaurants were very good. The pool and and activities are nice. My daughter did the zoo camp and loved it.

Our room had a deck, fireplace, fridge and a LARGE bathroom. We did pay more than a regular room but it was definitely worth it to stay in this wing. The lodge itself is nice. We were assigned a room in chateau 2, room 2. Upon arriving in our room we were greeted with not only an overwhelming smell of smoke but also a musty unclean smell. The room was dank, the carpet was stained, the head of the bed was pushed up against some sort of cabinet on the wall. The light fixture in the bathroom had a bulb burnt out. There was a sofa that had seen significantly better days. There was also a cheap beat up box fan in the room. I'm not sure if perhaps they were trying to air it out at some point. To be completely transparent it was one of the worst rooms I've ever experienced in all my travels. It was gross. I didn't think to take photos I wish I had thought to but both my husband and I were aghast they would even offer such a room to anyone. We made our way back to the desk and apologetically asked for a better room in the lodge after explaining our concerns. (Though, we had no reason to apologize for being assigned such a poor room.) I don't want to be an ungrateful or entitled hotel guest. I know working in the service industry can be unbelievably trying at times. With all of the rooms at Oglebay Park Resort, there is no possible way Mary Ann could have known the state of that room. Mary Ann was so kind and understanding. She was able to adjust our room for us and issued us a card to receive complimentary breakfast the next morning. To be completely transparent, we have stayed at Oglebay in the past and were never so disappointed as we were this aspect of this visit. My husband has been visiting there since he was a child for yearly family vacations. We have been considering making our yearly family reunion with our 7 grown children and their families. It is my hope that Oglebay Park will refrain from using any room in such poor condition in the future. It is also my hope they will give Mary Ann a commendation for her excellent customer service.

Apparently it actually is because there was a poster near the elevators that indicated that Hampton inn was voted the best in the world. It also won like a best hotel in West Virginia award also. Who knew? Right off the highway, restaurants literally basically just off the edge of the property including, and I would like to highlight, TACO BELL. Room was decently sized, about average. Beds were comfortable. TV was smaller than I have expected recently and I don't recall them having the option of connecting Netflix or any other streaming services which is nice, relying on what is on cable at that particular moment is a drag and I don't know how we did it for so long. Towels were plentiful. Shower was nice. Multiple mirrors arranged in just a way that your partner can watch you on the toilet from the bed if you leave the door open, as we discovered. I'll spare you the photos that were taken. Not a bad choice.

The key part was a room with 3 beds for our family and decently clean. This ticked those boxes. We got a large room with table and 3 beds (with the sofa). The whole room seemed more run down than you might expect for the price ($175/night with taxes), but it wasn't actively dirty anywhere and the staff was all friendly. The room had a decent view of mountains and trees changing colors and the view was better from other places including the parking lot. The room had hot breakfast along with continental staples of bananas, toast, bagels, and things. The hot things were mediocre eggs and paper-thin bacon, which was at least something that wasn't pure carbs. There was no waffle iron even thought that's become a bit of a staple.

My family and I (including our 12 year old and 9 month old) stayed at this location last night. Around midnight, my 12 year old woke up scared, saying that an ant was crawling on her in the bed. I got up to check, and noticed a very small bug, the shape of an apple seed. I killed it, looked around for more but didn't see any, then told my child to go back to sleep. Early the next morning, my partner who was sleeping in the other bed jumped up because she felt something crawling on her face. She knocked it off and looked on the sheet to find a BIG bug, the same shape as the little one we saw in the other bed hours earlier. I looked up the description online and sure enough it was a bedbug. When we notified the front desk the were unapologetic, and told me, "if you want to leave, you can leave". They said they wouldn't charge us for the nights stay but we would have to wait two days for the credit. I asked to speak to a Mgr and was told because it was a Saturday, there were none available. After I insisted to speak to a Mgr, the person at the front desk called the assistant Mgr at home. The assistant Mgr. was even less helpful. When I asked how Hawthorn planned to compensate my family who now was 6 hours from home with nowhere to stay, the Mgr said the incident was not their fault and sarcastically asked if we would like to stay another night in their hotel. Needless to say, my family and I had to leave, find a new hotel and are still waiting for the $228 hold to be removed from our credit card. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!
