It reminds me of one of the wholesale clubs (or even a wal-mart) -- grey concrete floors, high ceilings, open concept. It's like an open-market, noise and all. Compare it to one of the chain grocery stores, an Albertson's if you will, or even a Target or Walmart grocery section and you might be surprised, or at least know what to expect. With a good selection of name-brands as in any grocery store, next to those name-brands is the WinCo brand at a slightly lower price, and ingredient-wise, is the same. If you're an only-organic foodie, used to ('lucky' you) shopping at the store here in Billings that specializes in that or one of the other health-food stores, or if you're from outside the area and are a Whole Foods or even a Trader Joe's shopper, WinCo is not going to become a regular stop for you. Don't even pretend. For anyone who, for whatever reason, is comfortable with mass market products supplemented with regular fresh fruit or veggies, WinCo is a good alternative to the chain grocery store. Organic food choices are limited here (really limited), but this isn't WinCo's wheelhouse. It caters to customers who might want to support a locally-owned/run business on a limited budget. There are bulk items of grains, pasta, nuts, candy, coffee beans, and even dog treats. Weirdly, Parmesan cheese is also here in the bulk scoop-your-own section. There is both a fresh-made pizza and sushi section and some pre-made meals if you're in a hurry. WinCo doesn't take credit cards and not having to pay those fees helps them keep the prices lower. It does take debit cards, though. It's a 3.5-star place, for what it is.

Great prices and a big selection of food it's my one stop food store. The place is always clean and the staff is friendly, the prices are better than any other grocery store and I think the food is better quality than Walmart plus it a better price. Fruits and vegetables are the best.

Located in the lower level of the bank building, this spot has almost the same menu items and Montana-made things as the other location. Because it's newer and recently opened, construction hasn't quite finished so there's no seating available and the inventory of Montana-made things is still a work in progess. Chalet Market Downtown is eye-catching with its wide open space, light colored floors and bright menu monitors over the counter. It's almost too busy to look at, because your eyes naturally are drawn from one thing to the other. As for the food: I was there in the morning, so only the breakfast menu was showing and, like their other location, you choose your bread, protein, cheese and preferred add-ons. Or, you can do as I did and choose one of their specialty sandwiches or other options, such as avocado toast, huckleberry scone, breakfast burrito. It was a tossup between their specialty breakfast sandwich or the breakfast burrito. I picked the Chalet Market special, but they were out of the buffalo salami that day. While it was still good with the substitute, it just didn't have the same flavors. As weird as it sounds, the spicy honey mustard was more sweet than spicy and just didn't work for me on a breakfast sandwich. I'm not discouraged, though; I plan to try again next time I'm downtown. Or, maybe I'll just head to the other location. A Montana locally owned spot, two locations . . . sometimes convenience is not overrated.

But, since this [Ace] hardware store used to be a grocery store, I guess it isn't that far out of the realm of possibility. Evergreen cafe is a small shop serving sandwiches, charcuterie trays, Wilcoxson's ice cream and the specialty of one of the owners: Kombucha. The brewmaster and his wife decided to open this small shop to do something different. Well, I guess a leap from engineer to kombucha brewmaster isn't what I would have expected, but from one science to another -- good for them. Each day you can stop in for a $5 grab and go box containing a half sandwich, maybe some chips, or vegetables, or a small serving of a salad of some kind. The salads are also available in containers for adding something to your at-home meals. There are at least two or three different kinds available at any time, and I've seen chicken, curry chicken, chicken apple, veggie, pasta salads. Of course, you can have a sandwich made there with your choice of meat (or egg), and cheese and you'll certainly not be disappointed in the serving size. So far, though, the charcuterie trays have been a winner for me. There are several different kinds, whatever she feels like putting into the particular tray along with the vegetables. Sometimes fruit, sometimes crackers, or different meats but they're made fresh every morning and she guaranteed each tray would contain at least a pound of something -- good for a small party -- or a couple of days of lunches or snacks. The kombucha is available in about four or five flavors. It doesn't have the sharp tang of some kinds, and the flavors are more muted, but they're still good. This time of year the cherry is must-try. Social distancing is handled well, here. There are a few tables, spaced far enough apart to meet the requirements, and that makes it easy to sit and enjoy your sandwich and perhaps chat with friends.

I tried to enjoy some music at this place tonight and last weekend, and she made me super uncomfortable both times. The first time, when i was ordering food at the kiosk with my mom, she pushed me out of the way and said "excuse me" extremely rudely. I personally don't like being touched by servers. Tonight my boyfriend and I were there to see the live music and get a pizza. For context I am 31 and he is 30. we didn't ask to order alcohol, we only wanted a pizza. she demanded to see our IDs. Then she told me that she expected them to be fake, using a condescending voice the entire interaction. Then she loudly pointed out the non alcoholic drink section of the menu. we ordered some sodas because we felt like she would be even meaner to us if we didn't order a drink of some sort. She made me want to leave immediately, but we stuck around to hear a few songs first.

Yet, here I was, on a brief visit to Billings. Walking in, the place is beautifully decorated, with a lot of rustic charm to it, and a lot of decorations that remind you that you are in Montana. A large engraved bear decoration in the restrooms stood out. The service there was very attentive, with a single, very friendly hostess manning the place -- it was a quiet day when we went there, with only one other person in the place. The winery works on what I would call a fairly unusual model. They don't charge for tastings -- they'll let you taste every single wine on the menu if you want. I tried quite a few before settling on a glass, and also took home a bottle. All of the wines I tried were very good -- and they have a huge selection of different styles and varietals. Each one stood out uniquely -- which is impressive for a winery with like thirty different types. They also have a kind of "make your own" charcuterie board option, where you can pick from a couple of cheeses and meats. The portions here were nicely generous, too. If they were a little bit closer to home, I would definitely be a regular. As is, I'm looking forward to popping the bottle I purchased.
