I found Wind Rose Charters by accident. I was searching craigslist for a fish tank and found their post under activity partners. Being a local, I've heard of many of the fishing ships - the Shellback, Reel Steel, Jumpn' Jack, but not Wind Rose. I did a little research and was very impressed by their website. I liked the price ($110+tip), the idea of getting dungeness crab, and having a choice between a 7am or a 7pm fishing trip. I called in and booked a trip and then liked them on facebook to see what people were catching. Their social media person contacted me and asked me to write a blog about my experience. Since I was planning to write a detailed yelp review anyway, I figured why not. Before the trip I signed up for Salty's fishing Derby which runs Memorial Day to Labor Day. It was $10 to enter in the category of salmon. The Wind Rose website says to get there by 6:30am, and the trip starts at 7am. I made the mistake of stopping for ice at the Chevron before the trip. There was a bunch of other fishermen in line and it took me about 12 minutes to get through the line. I arrived at a full boat waiting for me at 6:40am and after some introductions we were off at 6:45am. We didn't have to go far. We had our lines in the water by 7:15am. I was the first to put my line in and the first to catch a nice 14lb salmon. Even though we all had assigned poles, we took turns pulling in our first fish regardless of pole. We tried to stick with our own poles after that, but there were time when 2, 3, and even 4 fish were on the lines at once and whoever was closest grabbed a pole. Curt was an excellent Captain. He knew exactly where and how to catch our limits quickly. I had both my Salmon by 8:10am and the boat had their limits by 8:30am. Curt made quick work of cleaning the fish exactly as requested, packed them in bags, and had us heading home by 10am. I almost felt bad taking the day off of work... almost. After fishing, I went back to Salty's and weighed in my largest salmon at 13.5 lbs after gilling and gutting. I spent $130($20 tip) and got about 24 lbs of Salmon meat, which means I paid about $5.41 a pound for salmon rather that the store price of $14.99. I gave 6 lbs. of it to my co-workers, and then hosted a salmon feast for 16 people. We made four different sauces: (1) Butter, dill, lemon juice, and garlic salt with parsley, (2) Tequila, Mango, and Jalapeno, (3) Dijon mustard, dill, and lemon, (4) and something special. We cut a whole salmon into steaks, tied the steaks inside corn husk filled with lemon slices, rosemary sprigs, sliced garlic, and butter. Most of it was cooked over mesquite coals. I also kept the caucuses of the salmon and covered it in the lemon butter sauce and cooked it for an appetizer. I originally just wanted the collar bone and cheeks, but Curt advised me about how to cook the carcass and it was fantastic! Dinner was excellent and after making a couple to-go plates, I still had about 3 lbs of cooked salmon in my fridge. I highly recommend Win Rose Charters.

I had been hearing great things about the Wind Rose and it's Captian Curt so at around 11 am we gave him a call.

Completely agree. Your words are true. He's cheap and affordable for a reason. He'll never know what he's doing wrong. He was rude from the booking to the trip and back. And he wonders why his workers get more tips than him. I'm sure if he was reading this, he's be just fine and dandy we don't rebook, so do him a favor.

Our Captain - Curt or Curtis has no buisness leading a chartered fishing trip. He may be an outstanding worker when it comes to being a deck hand on a crab boat or something similar, but his people skills are horrendous. The only thing he pointed out or taught us about was how to put the boat in neutral - in case he fell off. He asked us no questions about us or our expectations, experience, or desires about what we wanted to get out of the trip. He had no idea my sister and brother-in-law worked at the local Salmon hatchery and have more fishing experience or knowledge than 99% of the world. He did not communicate anything to us. His attitude was piss poor, he raised his voice, told my mom to sit down that she was in his way, and told another PAYING CUSTOMER he wasnt helping him at all. He did not let us participate at all when it came to putting the lines in the water, baiting the line, or netting the fish. All we did was reel in the line. If we had wanted to just come home with fish/Salmon and thats all we wanted out of it - we would just gone to the grocery store. He has yet to figure out the world does not revolve around him. All he talk or more bragged about was the owner of the company wants him to take over the crab boat cause no one can turn away 30%. The Wildrose needs to find another Captain or provide some extensive customer training. As of now, If you're looking for an enjoyable fishing trip, try one of the other local operations.

He's got the boats, he got the gear, he's got the locations for successful outings, yet the real qualities follow. Eric is an intelligent, resourceful, avid outdoorsman who knows the waters we fished around Shelter Cove due to years of guiding, and we caught fish! On our trip we caught at least 8 species of fish and brought home at least 12 fish. I say we caught at least 30-fish, but some were too small for fish and game regulations. The most important aspect to me was Eric's attention to detail regarding safety; the redundancy in marine radios, navigation tools, and consideration for weather conditions and watching for weather that was going to make the trip back to the launch site difficult. I spent 13-years as an Air Force Pararescueman (PJ) and have had my share of rescues, both on the coast in our Blackhawk helicopters and parachuting from a C-130 1,000-miles out to sea to perform a rescue. Eric is the epitome of a safe mariner and guide. My wife Kerry was very comfortable and secure, and caught more fish than any of us! Remember, you're in a kayak that has all the amenities of a ocean worthy kayak- very stable and plenty of dry storage space, deck storage space, no head and no galley (bathroom and kitchen). So, a lesson I learned was to strategically place food and water in reachable positions. You can tie down and stow gear n food on the front n back of the boat, and Eric will slide by and fetch it for you. Also we spent 7.5 hours in the cockpit which is totally up to your party on if you beach somewhere for a stretch and comfort break. We elected to fish and fish and it was totally cool with Eric, 7.5 hours of continuous fishing- marvelous. The addition of Eric's fish-finding sonar made for staying on the fish easier. I could easily go on, but I think I've made lots of great points on why we'll be going again!
