What a fun excursion! Myself and a couple of girlfriends wanted to go horseback riding locally. This family owned business in Orick was the most appealing option based on location. The state park trails we rode the horses through were so beautiful and serene that it made for a magical ride. After a brief introduction to our horses, we embarked on our tour (90 minute Goose Pen Trail). Our guide shared lots of interesting information about the trees and other native plants. We rode up some steep hills, gave the horses a couple of breaks, and of course had a photo opportunity in the Goose Pen Tree. After the ride back, we got to feed the horses some baby carrots as a thank you treat. This was such a lovely experience and I'm grateful for this family owned venture. Please do not skip on this activity. This is by far the best activity I took on during my time as a tourist in Humboldt County. I found this business through my google search of must do activities while in town. I was part of the Goose Pen Tour which was 1.50 hours and cost $70.00 per person. The meeting point for this tour is conveniently located in a private property where you can park your vehicle and know it will be safe. I enjoyed that the horses are calm and trained to go on the trails because the ride was smooth and quite enjoyable. I was able to ride the horse provided and still take photos. The location we rode in was magical. I liked that they give you the option to put on a helmet or not. I decided not to because I personally felt that the horses would be calm and they were. I recommend that people do for safety reasons. Although the trail is safe and horses stay one behind the other as they move through the trail I think this activity is mostly for young adults and grown ups than children. I would contact the business and ask about their experience with children. This is because during the trail ride you are given a horse and you sit on the horse and move on your own. I personally felt safe because the horses are used to going on the trail we ride on. When one stops the ones behind him stop too. I highly recommend this activity. I'm visiting Arcata for a week to spend time with my daughter. We were looking for things to do and came across this place. Booking a tour was simple. When we arrived we were greeted by a very friend owner. She had us fill out a quick form and we were then helped onto our horses. It was just the 3 of us on the tour. It was peaceful and beautiful. Whether there's only 2 of you or a family of 6, I highly recommend riding horseback through the Redwoods. My experience with Redwood Creek Buckarettes was a memory of a lifetime. We did the Majestic tour, perfect amount of time, and worth every penny. The entire trail was stunning and there were so many springtime blooms. Very nice trail ride through the redwoods. We chose the 1 1/2 hr ride and Katlynn provided a nice trip on Dakota and Dagwood. All three horses were a bit nervous due to nearby elk herd when we started off. Katlynn did a nice job of coercing the horses safely through their jumpiness. Beautiful scenery. Katlynn was a much more fun guide when you asked her about her rather then simply "citing" the rehearsed speech stops. read more

Just did the 2.5 hour long ride, what a blast! You go to the 'goose pen' and then to the top of the ridge. Horses are very accustomed to the trail and the formation, perfect for your first time on a horse. read more

A fabulous ride through the Redwood National Park!! I highly recommend this outfit due to the well maintained, well trained horses, and the friendly and knowledgeable staff. I love that it is a family run business and you can really tell how well they know the horses and how much they love them. I went to the website a week before our visit which may have been a bit late to try to book a tour for four people, because all the spots were filled. I took a chance and called the Buckarettes directly and they were able to find a day and time to squeeze us in. So call them even if the website says they are booked just to make sure. We were up at Jedediah Smith, and my daughters 14 and 10 wanted to ride... we called Redwood Adventures, and they put us in touch with this local stable at the Orick Rodeo Grounds. The staff were wonderful, and the ride was wonderful. There aren't enough good things to say about the experience! These are 5th generation Orick people with a genuine love of the area. Super solid ride for the money into the redwoods on great (healthy and spirited) horses. They have a great control of these animals, and i felt like the size of the group was perfect. The 2 hr ride gets you up into the old growth, and the fog bank (at leas on the morning ride). Totally amazing experience. Christina and crew had a great manner with horses, and were a great fit for us - just enough information/talking to keep it interesting while still allowing the nature to take center stage. The horses never made us feel unsafe/unstable, through some relatively steep terrain, making it more fun than just a flat trail. We had a great time (even our son who wasn't sure he really wanted to go for his first time)! read more

Great place! Very clean, well maintained location, and horses were easy to ride for our 10 and 8 year old boys, my wife, and I (we are not experienced horse riders). While camping in the Redwoods, I knew I'd want to ride some horses. It doesn't get much better than this. Riding through the redwoods and the fog. Beautiful scenery and great horses, so very well trained, but still retaining their personality and spirit. This was not some boring trail ride. They didn't even mind when we extended our ride from the 1 1/2 hr. ride to the 2 hr. ride with the rest of the group. We all got our pictures taken inside of a goose pen, it was awesome. We learned so much about the local forest from Kristina. She was also very reassuring to our son who had never ridden before at all, letting us know what to do with the horses as we went up and down the steep hills, etc. She cares about her horses and her customers. The ride was so beautiful and every thing I was scared of was put as ease because it was constant uphill and then constant downhill. I was only scared to go up for about 5 minutes and same downhill. As first time horse riders I am glad I booked with Redwood Creek Buckarettes. It was just a random internet search and I end up booking with them. I just can't get over the fact that I picked the right business. You can book others in the area for maybe cheaper but what you may not realize you may be going out with in-experienced guide. Redwood Creek Buckarettes is family run business for generations and they know the area very well. They have years of experience with horses and as guide (you don't want to ride behind in-experienced guide). They will not compromise your safety (if group is big enough to require another guide, they will add another guide). They know their horse's personality, they can match you with the right horse (not like other companies with seasonal guides who don't really know the horse). I can't say enough good things. Kimberly and Teagan were our guides, and they were wonderful. I had actually booked a 1:00 tour with a different business (Redwood Trails Horse Rides), and showed up at 12:30. At 1:10 I called them to be sure I was in the right place, and she said she was running late and would be there in 30 min. About 10 min later she texted me and said she was sick and wouldn't be able to do my tour. I was very upset, as we were only in town for a few days from thousands of miles away. The Buckarettes happened to be there preparing for a 2:00 tour, and also happened to have a couple extra horses with them. They graciously welcomed me into their group- and I couldn't have been more grateful and pleased! Funny thing is, the woman who I originally booked with pulled in just before 2:00 and met another group there for a tour. It seems she thought I'd have left by then. So- yeah she completely lied to me...I guess double booked and instead of being honest with me she said she was sick. I was totally disgusted at the lack of consideration. Things definitely worked out for the best though- the Buckarettes are friendly and fun, and we're glad we landed in their group. The Hubbs and I elected to do the 2 hour Majestic tour on our weekend getaway to the Redwoods, and were not disappointed! Neither one of us are experienced horse people, but felt that the ride was perfect, although it did have some steep terrain, and the horses tended to trot on the way back down. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable of the area. My only compliant (and it's a small one) is that we came down the same trail that we went up. But that isn't enough to dock any stars! After reading these reviews, I wish we would have had Christina for our guide. Unfortunately we had Kimberly who was terrible. We arrived early but she never acknowledged us then handed the book to us to sign a liability waiver. Later a family of 3 arrived, the parents were in their 30s and the daughter was 9 years old. We introduced ourselves while Kimberly essentially ignored us. She stated several times that she was waiting for more riders but they never arrived. We were paired up with our horse and were only told their name. Kimberly made no attempt to learn ours either, she called me by the logo on my shirt! As we started the ride, one of the horses did not behave so Kimberly went over to it and smacked it so hard in the face that it made his jaw rattle! I was shocked! My spouse and I are huge animal lovers and have never resorted to striking them. Later in the ride there is a designated picture area of a hollowed tree. Kimberly called the tree "the goose pen". She dismounted from her horse and moved others into the "pen" for a photo opportunity. She relied on the other family members to take the picture which meant that we had to maneuver our horses around the others and try to hold them still enough to take a picture. One horse did not cooperate and once again Kimberly hauled off and nailed him on the face! The little 9 year old girl had a look of terror and I was horrified! At that point, no one would have dared to ask Kimberly to snap a picture for them although it would have been nice if she offered to do so. The mother told Kimberly that they were ready to turn around so Kimberly left with that family. My spouse and I continued on up the mountain with Kimberly's niece, Taylor. Taylor is a 9th grader and very sweet. She lead us up and down the mountain like a real pro. The scenery on this ride is beautiful but we would not recommend going with the buckarettes due to the animal cruelty and Kimberly's poor personality. There are 3 names on the Buckarettes shed, Kimberly, Taylor and Kaitlyn. I did not see Christina so you will most likely get Kimberly as your guide! read more
