My destination was the Tall Tree, and I passed miles of banana slugs, moss, lichen, spring wildflowers, and the refreshing surge of Bull Creek with its turquoise hues. The park was far from crowded, and I was pleasantly surprised to see Park Staff tending the maintenance needs (weed abatement). I felt safe & incredibly relaxed on the trail. There are over 100 miles of trail in this park and plenty of river access, providing something for everyone. If you only drive through the Avenue of the Giants, it will be time well spent in this gorgeous paradise.

The many old growth redwood groves are interesting and beautiful to saunter through. Way finding is easy and park maps and internet resources make for a wonderful road trip. Visitor centers are well stocked, have clean bathrooms with ample parking. Volunteer staff are well informed and helpful. Trails are well marked and very clean. Surprising lack of random trash so volunteers and visitors do a great job. We have learned over the past few years to avoid the crowds and cost of visiting National Parks in California when we are truly blessed with such exceptional California park options. This park is amazing and fascinating with manageable visitor sizes. Take the time to experience the area small towns too!

He's the first fly fishing guide we've went on a trip with and he couldn't not have been a better guy. If you are new and need a fun relaxing environment with excellent coaching, Darren is your guy. He even packs ingredients for lunch and makes a delicious sandwich on the spot while you catch fish. Photos show the first couple of fish we got. So if you want to avoid slathering sunscreen on, the best bet is lightweight, light colored clothes that have some kind of built in SPF. Our fishing guide, who deserves his own non-5 star review (unless you count amount of marijuana smoked while supposedly working), recommended this place as I was suffering a bit from heat. From the outside, the shop doesn't look like much, but inside - wow. This small and neat shopped is like a fly fishing paradise. As I'm not a fly fisher and also not really knowledgeable about fishing, it was overwhelming. But cool to look around and see all the crazy things people use. Anyway, they had the sun shirt that I was looking for, and I found a nice hat. So overall, cool spot to visit, and great if you're into fly fishing. Parking is easy and they take credit cards too.

We know how to use our down riggers. We know how to set up the lines. We didn't know where the fish were. That was until we met Bob Telles of The Reel Thing. I came across The Reel Thing July 27, 2016. My cousin and I had just pulled the boat up into the shade so we could start prepping it for the week ahead of fishing. Shortly after we began our setup a gentleman came down the hill in a golf cart. He circled around the boat and asked, "Are you guys going to be here long?" We replied with a friendly no. The next thing you know this gentleman introduced himself as Bob and began telling us about the fish. Bob gave my cousin and I so much detailed information our brains almost exploded. Bob then let it be known he is a guide on Shasta and has many years on Shasta and other lakes. Bob's friendly demeanor and willingness to provide so much information to non paying people was so amazing. He was not trying to sell us a guided trip. He didn't tell us to get off his lake. He told us that he loves giving out the information because it is what he loves to do. Put people on the fish! Bob Telles put us on the fish alright.
