Came into town late so really just a few places opened to get some drinks and food. This places is located in the old downtown. We were able to walk from out hotel. They had indoor and outdoor seating. This place was packed. There was a wait. My husband asked about sitting outside but the hostess made it sound like you couldn't ask for a section, it was whatever table was available when your name came up. Unfortunately, the beer we wanted was already out. The next one was out too. Pretty bummed because we were looking forward to trying some IPA beers. My husband ended up having to get a canned IPA instead of a draft beer. There were plenty of other bars we could have left and tried but we also needed food and other places were close serving food. My husband and I split the fish tacos. They were really good. We ended our meal with funnel fries. I loved them but my husband thought they were to greasy. Our server rocked. We came here for our final meal before heading to the airport for our flight. In short, it's your typical bar food with lots of tvs for sports. Good place for that, but if you're expecting great food...you may want to find somewhere else to dine. L O C A T I O N Located in downtown Helena area, you can either find a parking lot or just park on the side streets though parking is 1-2 hours only. I N S I D E It's a fairly large place with some sit down booths, but primary bar seating is what you can find here. One side is primarily the bar area, the other side more seating. The Saloon used to be a brothel not too long ago and just recently became a bar but they did keep a lot of the artifacts. So it's a good story if you're looking for the darker underbellies of Helena. F O O D We came on Saturday which apparently has a brunch menu. We opted to get half a sandwich (reuben) and sweet potato fries as well as these enchilada bites that were deep fried. We were surprised with the size of the appetizers for the price. It was a lot. The food itself was just okay. Just your usual bar type food. S E R V I C E Our server was good although they seemed to have burned/forgotten our sweet fries which my nieces were waiting for....for a while. O V E R A L L It's a good place for a happy hour and okay bar food. I'd be curious to see how good their drinks are, but I was about to head on a plane so that wasn't going to happen. We came in, was offered a seat at the bar, my brother ordered a beer and as soon as I told her I just wanted a plain Shirley temple with no alcohol she just flipped a switch, also she brought me my Shirley temple in a little whiskey glass?? But she completely ignored us, never once came and asked us how we were doing or if we wanted refills etc also we ordered the nachos and boneless wings and it took 45 MINUTES! The nachos didn't have enough queso or toppings so half of it was just eating plain chips. The brisket tasted good but that's even if you got any, it was in tiny pieces and not very much on it. The food overall was mediocre and definitely not worth the price and the bartender didn't give us one ounce of attention when she found out I wasn't drinking, my brother even wanted another beer but she never came over, I also drank my 3 sip Shirley temple and wanted another one but she just walked by. The Windbag is one of my favorite places. The ranch dressing is EVERYTHING. Seriously. It's made in house and is some of THE. BEST. We also like the wings; and their menu has something for everyone. Burgers. Salads. Healthy stuff. And a full bar. Bartenders are super friendly also, which is where we usually saddle up to. What has happened to a Helena classic? Cocktails were missing ingredients and gross. Mac & Cheese had to be sent back to be reheated then was microwaved for too long and hard. Server was minimally attentive for how slow they were. Please watch the quality of your food! read more

The place definitely has history , very interesting establishment. You can sit inside or outside which is great on a beautiful day. Very busy and a long wait time before getting service. Food is hot and tasty, especially the enchilada bites. The pretzel is huge but tasty . Fish was flakey and salad crisp. One of my favorite "haunts" as a Carroll student long ago - recently returned to the area and it's been fun seeing who has stuck around - who has left and who has improved. The food and the cocktails are still very well done - but the amount of work to add more seating and service is notable. Worst service ever! If you're looking for a place to eat I would not recommend this establishment. I initially called in for takeout was put on hold for 40 minutes so we decided to come down and order takeout. I was continually overlooked by staff which made my experience even worse. I appreciate that they were busy but they should never lose their customer service skills if they possessed any at all, just because they're busy. The atmosphere was lively and good but that was the upside. Ordered boneless chicken wings and a chicken Caesar salad. The food here is not good. The salad was wilted and I left it on the plate so the waitress could see it. The boneless chicken wings are all batter. Would have loved to try the food, but we were mostly ignored while seated at the bar...had to ask for a rag to wipe the bar spot where we sat...but even a "hello, be with you in a minute" would have gone a long way...it was a "We don't really care if you stay or go" vibe. Not exactly sure why this isn't rated higher by the folks on Yelp. We had a great night here with perfectly prompt and friendly service from Carlee. Everyone was masked up and socially distanced. Plenty of good beer choices and many menu options. I went with a mushroom Swiss burger on lettuce with fries. Very happy and if you are in Helena it's worth a visit. On my occasional trips back home to Montana, Windbag Saloon's great food makes it a regular stop (the buffalo chicken Mac is a favorite). However, this time, I was pleasantly surprised to find the Windbag ratcheted up to a must-visit. The craft-cocktail scene hasn't quite hit Montana yet, but Windbag has a highly skilled mixologist, trained in Seattle, who can expertly create top-notch cocktails from even the standard, for Montana, liquor selection. In my couple of visits this weekend, she's prepared some of the best classics for me: an old fashioned, a sidecar, and a classic daiquiri. The service was great no problems with her. The food was very disappointing....three of us had planned to order gyros only to find out no gyro meat but offered chicken as an alternative. The gyro was bland as the chicken was boiled and no seasoning. I ordered the Greek salad it has boiled chicken breast on top of spring greens 4 slices of cucumber and gyro bread triangles...no tomatoes no klamata olives and no onions...so disappointed. 3 people had French fries....2 were hot and crispy and one was the bottom of the bowl soggy and soft....we have always enjoyed this establishment but probably won't be back! read more

Went to the Windbag Saloon the other night and had the best burger I've had in ages. I ordered the bacon and blue burger, my boyfriend ordered the burger with the BBQ sauce. I didn't try his because I had my own 1/2LB burger to deal with but he ate every bite. The drinks are pretty good too, we ordered a huckleberry old fashioned and a huckleberry mojito. The old fashioned was STRONG AF! My BF is a sailor and he was struggling with it the mojito was just right! Originally wanted to eat at Bennys, they weren't serving burgers that day and from my experience a couple Days prior I knew their burgers were great! We ended up searching burgers in the area and came across Windbag. We were greeted and seated promptly but sat for nearly 30 minutes without getting a drink order taken. We had to stop A nearby server and ask for service. The food was horrible, fish was burnt and greasy, fry's are gut wrenching and so was the overloaded Mac and cheese. Service from our waitress (her name started with a J) was minimal to nonexistent. Thank goodness for the other waitress who took better care of us. :) On a brighter note their drinks are good. Soooooo good! After a huge hike in the snow, walking into the Windbag for a delicious, hot, carb heavy meal was everything we wanted and more. Definitely try the Montana Melt, I subbed for Swiss instead of the pepper jack. The aus jus was better than getting soup! Don't skip out on the garlic parm fries either, soooo good.
