Everytime I go to this Whole Foods bar I am blown away! The food is always on point! Their Kalua Pork Nachos are out of this world. They do not skimp on the Kalua Pork like other places. You'll get large chunks of shredded juicy smoke pork, covered in gooey melted cheese and topped with a large helping of avocado. Here they actually cut their crinkle cut fries thin, and it's a great trend! I'm not usually a fan of crinkle cuts, but they are doing it right! I finally got to try Paradise Ciders on Tap. Chill spot for happy hour with friends or just a quick drink prior to or post shopping. If you take it for what it is-a bar attached to a grocery store- it does the job. The convenience before or after shopping to drink or grab a bite is a nice option. On the other hand, it can be a little chaotic since it is a grocery story and a very busy spot. If you happen to come on a Thursday evening, the farmer's market nearby is also happening so parking is a big issue. $2 off draft beers and $1 off wines. There are a handful of food items on happy hour, as well. The upside is that you can buy food inside and take it outside and eat it. However, keep in mind that you cannot drink any alcohol you have purchased inside that didn't come from their bar. I love having a Whole Foods close enough to walk to, but being in downtown with all the tourists means it's so jam packed and crazy, I practically only go here if I'm willing to walk. At first we were thrilled that WF had their own tap room and bar, but after repeated bad experiences, I drag my feet now if my husband wants to go. Positives are that they pour local brews and circulating others, and have interesting items on their menu. Also, it's one of the only places with good prices to fill growlers, which we like doing. Negatives are pretty much everything else. Service is horrible, the wait is super long, the food is mediocre, and good luck getting anything unless you're sitting at the bar. Eh, the best word to use to describe this place: Came here to do some shopping, eat and charge my car up some as it was almost dead. Decided to plug my car and grab a bite before shopping. Walked over to the entrance and after reviewing the menu was ready to place my order. I may have waited a good ten minutes before someone even came to take my order. Should have gotten the hint there, but decided to wait. After ordering we went outside on the lanai to wait on the food. After about 45 mins roll by I go in to make sure I wasn't forgotten. Waited maybe another 20 mins and finally my food came out. I know you're probably wondering if I ordered this big elaborate meal....nope I had three small fish tacos. The tacos themselves were pretty good. Stuffed with lettuce and other vegetables it was great. The sauce to go with it was good also. Overall I will not return here and don't think I'd recommend it to anyone also. It wasn't too crowded either, so it may have just been an off day. But I will not risk it. read more

I'm really surprised that this place has such low reviews. Maybe they have a new system in place to be more efficient, but I did not encounter issues with ordering or service as others have. (Also, it's a bar at a grocery store--not a full service restaurant!) A group of friends arrived early to secure a table space outside, so that way we could take our time inside with the drinks. They had a pretty efficient line system going off to the right side of the bar with menus available for those in line. They even had an employee going down the line asking for orders so they would be ready when people got to the front of the line. We had no problem ordering or getting our beaches right away. The outdoor seating was very comfortable and pleasant. Employees periodically came outside to clear the tables and deliver beverages. Everything seemed clean and pleasant. I wouldn't go out of my way to make a special trip to this side of the island, but if friends were meeting up here or I was in the area, I would definitely stop by again. read more

Normally, beers alone would cost that much. My tip for the Windward Bar, is to sit at the bar so, you can receive attentive service from the bartender. Even the most impressive lineup of beers on the Windward side isn't enough to rate this place any higher than two stars. Yeah, the happy hour is a good deal, but if the food is going to be underwhelming, service terrible (possibly bordering on racist), and the place is filthy, there's little to build on. I've been here many times since they opened, and it's gone downhill for a while now. The food offerings have been scaled down, and have lost the excitement and the edge they once had. The poke was poorly seasoned and served with long grain rice - how do you do that in Hawaii? Service has always been incredibly slow, and it's clear that their system of service is not working. The servers also pour the beers, run the register, take orders from walk-up customers, and bus their tables, all while looking after far too many tables in a seat yourself situation. The cards are stacked against them. Without a host, there's simply no way to manage pacing, a chance to clean properly, or ensure that servers don't get slammed. This place could potentially be super awesome, but they need to get it together and make some huge changes to improve people's experience. read more

The menu, though not plentiful, has options to fulfill your craving. I went with their Fish and Chips. A sucker for Fish and Chips, it caught my attention and interest to experience it made the healthy way. I was far from disappointed. Plated beautifully, fish juicy, a relish tarter sauce to accompany -- best version I've had. My partner had a Taro Burger which was just as delicious. This is doomed to be a somewhat biased review since it's only based on one experience, and more specifically a special event. The Windward Bar offered a $35 multi-course tasting menu this Valentine's Day that far exceeded all our expectations, in terms of quantity and quality of the food. From the bloody Mary oyster shooter to the raspberry cheesecake, with everything else in between, including the ahi poke, fried chicken and heart-shaped waffles, bison sliders, berry salad, Thai pumpkin and coconut soup and grilled cheese, and ceviche and purple sweet potato chips, everything was beautifully prepared and presented. We had a minor complaint that it took too long for the food to come out, but for the price and what we got, it was an amazing dinner. The courses were definitely larger than one would expect a "tasting menu" would have, and they aren't regular items on the menu at the bar. The place wasn't busy, so maybe they overestimated the number of guests and thus had surplus ingredients for those who did come. We were all stuffed way before the end of the meal, and it seemed like everyone else had a big portion of food boxed up as well. With the best happy hour in the windward side, you just can't go wrong with Whole Foods. Happy hour (3-6 M-F, 4-7 Sat) is a pint of beer (several options from which to choose) AND a slice of pizza for only $5! The beer selection is fabulous, and the food options are great, whether you order off the menu or grab the "pay-by-weight" off the hot/cold bar. You have the option of sitting at the bar, indoor tables, or outdoor tables and couches on the lanai. Be warned though, when sitting anywhere other than the bar, the service can be slow and sporadic at best. At the bar, the bartenders never let your glass get empty; so if you see an open stool at the bar, grab it! It's definitely a fun place to go for good beer, decent pizza, cheap prices, and am array of interesting people to meet. read more

I occasionally go there for the happy hour on Friday, and last Friday wasn't my best experience. Usually we'd have a few beers and some pupus and all would be good. Last Friday I ordered cauliflower nachos, mochiko fish burger, and kimchi sliders (the latter two were on the special). Cauliflower nachos was interesting. It's basically lightly breaded cauliflower chunks with jalapeños, salsa, and a green dressing. It was good, but I think it was quite a bit so I had a hard time finishing it. (Husband said "it ain't nachos if there's no cheese on it, haha!) Kimchi burger was...good enough I want to write a song for it. And I'm not a musician. The beef tasted great, and magically worked well with the kimchi. The mochiko fish burger tho......at the first bite, it tasted like any other fish burger. I started getting full, so I thought I'd eat the lettuce, fish, and the slaw. And then I found the fish half cooked. Not how you'd think, like the center of the fish is slightly pink, but mostly cooked all around. No no no. The bottom half was cooked while the top half was raw. I'm not even sure how that's possible because the breaking over the raw part was cooked... by second bite it started to taste really fishy. I gave up after that second bite. I probably should have taken a photo; but I started to feel yucky, so I took off instead. It won't be the reason to never go back; but probably will be more cautious when ordering fish from the menu. read more

Terrible service. The bar guy "Rick" an older man was picking his nose basically in front of us. When we asked if he could put gloves on before serving our food and STOP picking his nose behind the bar he asked us to leave "his bar" . I was so grossed out. What a waste of our vacation time. Before he kicked us out we had waited for 20 minutes for our food watching him pick his nose and try and push drinks on us even though it was the afternoon and we had no desire for alcoholic beverages being Mormon. He had 0 respect for us because we weren't ordering alcohol after we told him 10x we were Mormon and didn't drink he kept asking RUDE and GROSS. It doesn't seem like there is a manager for this area. The food and drink offerings are wonderful but the staffing, cleanliness, service quality and speed is completely awful. Even if it's busy, you should acknowledge customers. A smile, nod of the head, anything to know you will get to me when you get a chance would make me feel so much better. Every visit here, if there are empty tables inside or out, they're filthy and there's trash everywhere, dishes stacked all over the creation. I originally gave this place 3 stars as the beer selection was good and the service was okay. Came back again tonight after seeing the selection, especially with the Maui Brewing tap takeover. We arrived and were excited to find a couple of tables open, although there were no seats at the bar. Our server came over and took our drink orders, didn't offer us a menu and when I asked about happy hour, she simply stated "Only Kona Longboard". Um okay, I thought there was a special for happy hour, but no idea what it was. I gave up that idea and ordered my original drink choice of the Goose Island's Sofie beer since I don't often see it on tap. My partner in crime had pre-ordered half a dozen oysters from the seafood department, and he was nice enough to bring it over to us. Jin asked for lemons when we put in our drink orders. When the server brought our beers, I asked for a menu to decide what to eat. She forgot the lemons. 10 minutes went by, and the bar had begun to fill up. A family of 4 sat down next to us, as did a couple on the same long table. The server came back, took their drink and food orders and breezed on by us. "Okay, maybe it's just busy". The family received their order, and again we are passed up. She goes to every other table around us, despite making eye contact with me several times and attempts to get her attention. She went to several tables that arrived well after us, and they had their orders taken and fulfilled. I finally get tired of waiting and went to order slices of pizza from the counter as well as ask for the lemons since it was for the oysters. We get our pizzas (from the employee working the ovens, not our waitress), finish our beers, and still no waitstaff comes by. Finally after at least 45 minutes, a male waiter came by to collect our plates and asked if we wanted another beer. I asked for another one, only to be told it was sold out. I asked if he could come back as I just needed a minute to decide. He agreed and took my plates. All the while, the table next to us and those around us were able to put in another order of food (oysters) receive their oysters, second round of beers and additional sauces (all brought separately mind you). Realizing that if I wasn't of a certain group, the service seemed to lack, I gave them a couple more minutes to take our order or at least check on us. No luck! Extremely frustrated, we went to the counter to ask for our check. Our waitress acknowledged us and asked "Oh, you're closing out?" Uh yeah! You did nothing for us aside from bring us 1 beer each. She didn't charge us for the pizza, but we were honest and informed her of the pizza order. Didn't tip...walked away. Usually I'm a chill person who enjoys a good beer and good food, but the service here is horrible. We noticed that a certain group seems to get special attention during service as they would have all 3 servers doting on them, while we could not get anyone's attention. You can order on the side of the bar and they give you a number or a waitress periodically comes by tables. I also had the veggie burger which was delicious and very filling. Positives: The food here is quite good and reasonably priced. Their expanded draft beer list is also excellent. Negatives: The service varies from poor to abysmal. No permanent host makes the process of getting a table confusing, and once you get seated the service is either rude and/or poor. Also, if you sit by the door it's like sitting in a wind tunnel. Last night we waited almost an hour for our food to come out. Luckily our initial (terrible) server left and was replaced by Kiana who was very nice and managed to get our food comped. We have been here several times and like it despite the fact that the service is terrible/non-existent. If you want food or a beer, you will have to go inside to the bar and order it yourself. They will bring it out to you but the dirty plates may sit there for hours. Service is just not a major focus of this place. So we decide to grab some drinks after dinner while staying in Kailua and come upon this bar in a whole foods. The whole concept of bar in a grocery store is still new and super exciting and awesome (see my review on Foodland Farms - that was my first experience and I was giddy with joy). We head over around 9 pm on a Friday night and it's bustling. Seriously. Outside seating is full and inside bar/eating are is getting there. People are laughing, having an awesome time and more people are strolling in and you can't figure out if they are here for milk or to start their night. And it doesn't matter! Cause everyone is here for a good time. They have several local beers on tap and also have Ballast on tap (shout out to San Diego my other love). We get Maui Hefeweizen and Pilsner. I ordered the former but ended up drinking the Pilsner. We saw people ordering from the bar (basic bar menu with burgers etc) and having drinks (mixed, wine or beer) and more people coming in to start their night. Bar area was full. The best way to describe the windward bar I would say is average. I stopped in for a bite to eat before shopping for groceries. I was disappointed by the small menu and the even smaller selection of healthy choices, especially given this is whole foods. They only have 2 veggie items on the whole menu, both are salads and both are not good food selections for those with allergies. I am allergic to dairy and neither salad can be made dairy-free. It took a while to place my order and then a very long time to get my food given I just ordered a burger. When the burger arrived, it was very undercooked and the bread (advertised as a vegan burger bun because their normal bun has dairy) tasted stale. This would not be my first choice of places to stop for a meal. read more

I'm not the usual Whole Foods shopper, but found out that the Kailua Whole Foods has Happy Hour all day Sunday while my friends and I were on the Cacao Festival walking Tour. Who can turn down a slice of pizza (pepperoni or cheese) and a pint of beer for $5.00?! We made it a day in Kailua this past Sunday - starting at Agnes, making our way to the Windward Mall Farmers' Market and then ending our day at Whole Foods. I would have preferred to sit at the counter where we would have been able to keep ordering drinks and food but settled for a table outside. It was a pretty day out and sitting outside worked out - after waiting for table. They were quite busy this day, as I am sure they are every Sunday. The staff from the young woman behind the counter taking our order to the young woman who cleared a table for us and the others in between were all very, very polite and eager to help. Another Yelper commented that the HH special only allowed for a choice of pepperoni or cheese pizza. Seriously, for $5.00 who cares?! 3 of us each ordered the HH special and then added the Artichoke and Spinach dip and Chimichanga (I'm at a loss for the exact description) appetizers from the Bar menu. Both were DELICIOUS and super cheap! Our 4th, a man, felt the need to order the Beef Brisket from the deli... and I'm glad he did! It was freaking fantastic! It was nice to see families with small children, young couples and groups of friends all gather here. We sat for hours just chatting, people watching and enjoying the weather. No one rushed us or made us feel unwelcome. I probably would have enjoyed myself more if I was able to sit at the bar or at least inside but I'll save that for my next trip to Kailua! read more
