Absolutely not what they advertise. We constantly had to call down to the front desk to get something and it took hours. One of the beds was busted and we had to have it fixed. We asked for a hairdryer twice before they finally gave us one and it was small and dirty. They "ran out" of Kleenex's. The only people truly helpful AND nice were the security guard and the bartender. We were told by lots of locals not to go out after dark as it is in an unsafe area and one of our tour guides when asked where we were saying said "yeah that place is a dump" which is pretty spot on. read more

Check in was tough, they made us wait until 4, almost had us miss our scheduled dinner cruise but we made it. They did let us leave our bags in a secure room so we didn't have to lug them around town while we waited. Door to the bathroom sucked and it had a weird shutter window in there, not a big fan of this style of restroom. Tons Of Potential, High Price For What It Is While Under Construction A bit over $150 a night isn't too bad for the islands, but this place is under some loud and constant construction at all hours. 5 stars for the 2nd floor courtyard with some cool couches and interesting stairs of children playing. This was my favorite part of this hotel. It really shows the potential of this place! Easy and fast access to the airport and central Charlotte city. During our visit the power outlets worked sometimes and not others as well as some appliances like the hair dryer. Not sure why... The staff was actually super polite so 5 stars to the people at the desk. Parking was confusing at first since you come into the entrance only, and when it's time to leave it says wrong way and entrance only but the exist is closed you you have to go that way anyway... lol The restaurant and most of the other parts of the hotel are all closed. So I don't have an opinion on what I cannot check out. The neighborhood is pretty noisy with plane, sirens and lots of sounds going on. I feel 3 stars is pretty accurate for what it is... if it was $99 a night I would say 4 stars for value, but not for quality... They took COVID-19 very seriously and the way they sanitize everything from the railings door handles gloves and hand sanitizer everywhere around enormous property on an hourly basis to always and consistently asking if we were OK and taking care of Bellman was great, great transportation always available. Overall just a clean comfortable and quite affordable place to stay in the best location I highly recommend. read more

The Unacceptable: - Horrible water pressure; I can literally count the number of streams coming out of the shower head. The shower head was all old and wonky, spraying water on the ceiling. The water would also go from warm to cold then extremely hot without touching the knobs. The shower we had on the sailboat we were just on had better water pressure and temperature control... and sailboats aren't known for their comfortable showers. I was really looking forward to a nice hot long shower on land and this place failed miserably. I called the front desk about the terrible shower and the woman who answered said she would send maintenance but no one ever came to look at it! - The cockroach in the bathroom. The Bad: - This hotel was supposedly renovated but I certainly couldn't tell. The elevators were slow, there were two signs in the lobby which looked like a couple letters fell off and they just hammered it back in and without lining it up with the letters in the rest of the sign. Half the drawers in our room was missing their drawer-pull. - We did not see any bellhops to take our bags up to the room. - Free Wi-Fi that requires you to re-login with a code every time you leave and come back to the hotel. Why? Just have your guests login once for the duration of their stay. What a pain in the a**. - Not really sure what the laws are about hotel room smoke detectors but we did not have one... we did, however, have a not-at-all unsightly (sarcasm alert) hole in the wall where one should've been! I've traveled to 26 countries thus far...stayed in dozens of hotels and I'm sad to report that The Windward Passage is by far the worst hotel ever. Our tour of the Virgin Islands commenced and concluded in Saint Thomas, so, we spent one night in the beginning and one night at the end of our trip. For our first night, we arrived on a late night flight from Miami to the Saint Thomas airport. The taxi ride to the hotel was short, maybe 15 minutes. Immediately I was taken aback by the fact that the hotel was situated off of a main street, in what appeared to be a not very nice, nor safe neighborhood. The hotel perimeter was fenced off and a security guard with security gate at the entrance of the parking lot for the hotel. Upon entering the hotel lobby I was surprised by the very dated decor and the lack of air-conditioning... which gave the hotel lobby a dirty and musky smell! We checked in and received the key to our room. As we made our way through the hotel we were surprised to see that the courtyard at the center of the hotel was under substantial construction. There was dust everywhere! We got to our room and much to our dismay we quickly found that the air-conditioning system was working very poorly... Low medium and high all yielded the same temperature and the same fan speed? The room was very dated and provided a view to the unkept and empty lot next-door that was littered with trash and what appeared to be abandoned vehicles. The bathroom was the most difficult for me. The shower when turned on dispensed what appeared to be rusty tainted water. Not to mention, that the hot and cold temperature was not able to be regulated well enough to take a comfortable shower. Lastly, the bathroom had a shuttered window that opened to the bedroom which I felt was beyond strange! This allowed for no privacy whatsoever in the restroom and made it very unpleasant to be in the bedroom while someone else was showering or using the toilet. Our last night at the Windward passage offered the same type of room as well as the same challenges that we experienced during our first night. Additionally, upon check-in our party of four was taken aback by the completely overwhelmed staff. There were dozens of people crowded in the lobby attempting to check in only to find out that their rooms were not ready. There were guests that had attempted to check in as early as 10 AM and at 2:30 PM were still waiting for a room. Had we paid $75 a night for our stay, I would have felt that we received our money's worth. However, we paid over $225 a night and receive what I felt was subpar accommodations and service. For a few dollars more we could have stayed at The Frenchman's Reef and Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort!!! The rate difference is $9.00 !!! Live and learn! I would like to point out that the marketing pictures for the Windward Passage are VERY misleading. The room pictured on their site is not comparable to any of the rooms we or our friends received. read more

While the furniture appears to have been updated, the rest of the property is run down. Paint peeling, safe in room didn't work, shower was dirty with many stains, balcony sliding door lock didn't work, coffee maker in room had mold in it, etc. Pool was open but restaurant was closed on mondays and tuesdays (when we were there). No pillows for you. Just two. Want food? NO. No restaurant. Want more than dimly lit corridors and rooms? NO. You don't get light. You need to feel like you are being held in a second rate dungeon and being lead to your depressing little cell. Want to sleep with your spouse and not feel like you're in your old twin bed at your parents house? NO. Only a hard double for you (they do have king rooms in all fairness). That's about it. I'll let your imagination do the rest. So I am not being viewed as 100% biased here are the (few) pluses: 1 - Clean rooms and sheets. Nothing off putting here. 2 - Decent TV and that transports you away from the fact that you're in this rundown place 3 - A good air conditioner. Always a good thing. 4 - Close to the ferry to the BVIs. BVIs are better anyway. 5 - It's located in the Caribbean. This is one of the greatest places on earth so...that's good. Don't even know where to start. I understand due to the previous Hurricane damage, there is still work to be done. However, the overall experience was sub-par. Nothing at all like what is portrayed on the website. * Check in was suppose to be at 4.. Room was not ready till 4:30pm * TV remote not working and it took 2 calls for someone to come up. Oh and it's satellite not cable. no channel guide readily available. We had to ask the front desk who then printed one from their computer. * Housekeeping would only give us 3 towels when I requested a few more, we ended up going to the nearby vendor market and buying some.( for the pool and beach). *No microwave in room. Coffee maker with no coffee available. * No welcome or visitor information in the room, it's downstairs in the lobby. *Was unaware of the free shuttle bus to Megans Bay beach until the day before we left. Thanks to the security guard who did let us know. *Construction noise going on can be annoying. *Overall this is a no frills place. The hotel's website says that there is breakfast and room service available, but the restaurant is not opened and they didn't tell us when we got there. I had to ask them where the breakfast was being served and then they told us that the restaurant was closed. They told me there was a book with different restaurants that don't deliver, and if u don't have a car then u can't get any food. They also told me that there was a shuttle to Meghan's Bay Beach but failed to tell us that we had to reserve it a day in advance and that it's a specific time. They have false advertisement and then the hotel don't accommodate us. read more

We will never return to such a poorly run establishment. We arrived at out 4pm check in time and when checking in we were told that our room was not ready. We were not told how long of a wait it would be so we waited patiently. After 20 minutes of waiting, I then returned to the front desk to check in once more and I was told very rudely that they would need to go upstairs to check and see if the room is ready, like in this day in age you can't just call up to the other staff to check. So once again I waited and this time over an hour which is ridiculous. I once more went back to the front desk and the room was still not ready so long story short it took us over an hour and a half just to check in. We go to our room and it looked like it was never cleaned at all. I do not recommend anyone to stay here at all. Good luck if you do. read more

As far as a bed, you've got one. Pool is nice. Overall the hotel itself isn't bad, but they need to invest in walkie talkies or cell phones so the staff doesn't have to yell across the corridor ALL day long at each other. There is NO quiet time, so if you want that, this isn't it. I would have also appreciated if they would have mentioned we were like three blocks away from downtown/shops/places to eat. I was told where to find a convenience store when I asked about vending. Common courtesy is severely lacking. Also, as much as I realize we are in the Caribbean it would have been helpful to have at least one staff member to speak English. It was incredibly hard to communicate with anyone. They did refund one night due to a missed flight connection and the security guard was helpful getting a taxi to the airport when we left. Okay I'll start by saying I'll stay here again if I went to St. Thomas. The hotel was very nice and clean. It was pretty, the receptionist upgraded our room to an ocean view so we did not have to wait 3 hours until check in time which was at 4pm which was VERY nice of her. It gave our trip a great start. It is VERY close to the airport, maybe 5 mins if even that. That was convenient. For Coki beach which is where we went for both days the taxi was $10 each every time. It seemed like honestly anywhere you were going it would be $10 per person no matter how close or far you were. The room was very cute, large king size bed the decor was nice. The bathroom was really cute. I loved everything about the hotel. There was not a beach near by but it didn't bother me. The price we got the hotel for was very cheap $120 a night which is perfect price for a two day trip. I ate breakfast at the restaurant they have. LOVELY waitresses in there, so kind hearted. The food was amazing and it was large portions so it was a full breakfast, we ate there both mornings. I seen a couple of mixed reviews for this place but I honestly enjoyed my stay and would do it all over again. GO FORRR IT. read more

We don't recommend this hotel at all! We booked 5 days here, from March 31 to April 4th, 2023. When we got at the hotel, the most unfriendly staff (they are all unfriendly here) at the front desk, gave us the wrong room, we paid for a king room, king bed & with windows to the beach, they gave us 2 full beds, in a bedroom with no views. We asked them to change us and they did. The 2nd room had the view and the king bed, but the bathroom was completely dirty, toilet was not functional, no lamps beside the beds, dirty floor, safe box not working... so we had to call them to check this bedroom and change us for the 2nd time. This time they apologized and gave us a proper room, it was clean, at least! But we don't recommend this hotel at all! Everything here is so decadent, the staff so unfriendly that is not pleasant to stay here. It was a big mistake booking this hotel! We hope this can help someone. Saint Thomas is a charming place and I'm so sure there's much better and nicer hotels than this one. I just researched and we could had a reservation at the Marriot Reef Saint Thomas for only 9 dollars more per night. read more

They're still remodeling after last year hurricane (2017), Cleaning is a big issue here. Cleaning crew doesn't not come every day!!! This hotel is very conveniently located walking distance to the ferry and close to restaurants. We stayed there for a night, before taking our flight back home, and it worked perfectly. At 5 in the morning, there was a taxi waiting outside, no need to call. There is a pleasant outdoor bar and nice outdoor pool. The hotel is a little dated and would need some renovation, but it seems to be a good option for a stopover at a reasonable price for the area. read more

I had to review this place because our experience was nowhere near as bad as the previous 2 reviewers! We chose Windward Passage solely for location - it was the closest place to the ferry dock (see my less-than-stellar review for Road Town Fast Ferry for why I needed a hotel at the last second!) and pretty close to the downtown historic area. We had a discount so the price wasn't too bad, although it is very much priced as at least a 4 star hotel. Other reviews mentioned issues with reservations - we made ours only about 30 minutes before checking-in via Expedia and had no issue. The room was ready when we got there around 6:30pm and this was Easter weekend so not necessarily the slowest time. The hotel and the rooms themselves were very nicely furnished and you could tell it had all been renovated. The only thing that was disappointing was that our "ocean view" consisted of a frosted glass door with a tiny unfrosted part all the way at the top. Our room was standard so there was only a peek of the water from the balcony, otherwise it was a view of construction, but I would hope that if I'd paid more for an actual harbor-view room that I would have gotten it without those frosted doors. Even with an uglier view, I would have preferred to see what was outside from the room. The pool was decent, with a good patio area and cute little putt-putt area. We were given a $5 voucher for the "electronic" casino, and decided to check it out. It was very quiet in there on a Saturday night and so not a very exciting place to be, but I won back exactly $5.25 on an electronic roulette machine (with a voice-over dealer and all) so I left happy. We didn't try the breakfast because it wasn't included and seemed overpriced for how simple it was. The breakfast room looked like one of the few places that hadn't been renovated recently, so decided to go elsewhere. Location was good, as expected - right across from the ferry and about 10 minutes to downtown, with a few shops and cafes along the way. Just be VERY careful: on the way to downtown we accidentally walked into an extremely seedy area right next to the hotel that was pretty uncomfortable to walk through. Downtown Charlotte Amalie generally isn't the nicest area, but if you're only there for a little bit then the Windward Passage certainly works. read more

The food in the restaurant is good but overpriced. There is free wifi! Ask for an ocean view or you'll be looking at the street.
