This place was amazing! When we were traveling to the mountains for my boyfriend's birthday, we planned to stop somewhere different. We didn't want the typical Bojangles or chickfila. When we found Windy City via Yelp, we were taken back by the line. We said, "well, dang, they must be good," and decided to see if the inside was open. Thankfully we were open with limited seating. We walked in and immediately ordered our food. All the stay were practicing social distancing and wearing masks and face shields. The dining area was spotless and also the restroom. The staff was very friendly and engaging. We left with full bellies and full hearts.

Hard to beat this plus a drink for $7.

It had nothing to do with Windy City Grill, but my lunch adventure today did not start off well. I drove to Taylorsville to purchase some fresh North Carolina apples. Afterward, I searched Yelp to find a place to get a hot dog and settled on Big D's Diner. I headed that way only to discover that they were closed. Yelp says they are open, so we gotta fix that. A second Yelp search suggested Charlie Graingers in Hickory, so I headed that way. But when I got there, a handwritten sign in the window declared that they are now closed on Mondays. If I repeated here on the Yelp venue the language that came out of my mouth at that moment, they would probably shut down my account. Thanks for the heads up, Charlie. A THIRD Yelp search suggested Windy City grill. Lawdy, lawdy miracles still happen. They were open, but were going to close in 40 minutes. I broke a lot of traffic laws to get there, but as my favorite comedian, George Carlin, once said: "Cop didn't see it, I didn't do it." I got there in time. Would Windy City save my frustrating lunch adventure from utter ruin? Sort of. The order taker was very nice and the price cannot be beat. I ordered two dogs all the way, tater tots, and a Cheerwine. Everything was good, but just that: good. The hot dogs were a nice size and had perfect portions of mustard, slaw, chili, and onions. As I said, everything had a good taste, but the chili was too sweet for me. If you like mild, sweet chili, you'll probably love it. The tater tots were run of the mill. I liked the lay out: a U-shaped counter area and tables also in the shape of a U along the walls. The floor waitress was pretty anxious to wrap up her shift and banged her broom into my stool several times while sweeping up. I didn't care much for that. But I think the place is full of locals who don't mind--in fact, she gave one of them a back scratch right in front of everyone, and no one batted an eye. To summarize: A decent place to get a good hot dog in Hickory at a great price. And I HIGHLY recommend going up NC HWY 16N to Taylorsville and picking up some fresh North Carolina apples from Deal Orchards, Sugarloaf Orchards, or one of the others in the area. Try some new varieties you've never had before--Goldrush, for example, is pome perfection. They are delicious and you'll be supporting your local farmer.

Skip the quick service chain and hit this place instead. It's only open for breakfast and lunch so don't put it off. The drive through is great (my pup sometimes scores a piece of bacon) but if you want emersion in the local flavor the joint, go inside. Order at the counter then take a seat. It's sort of the "Cheers" of Hickory. 90% if their customers are regulars but they love newbies too. My kid loves the swivel stools at the lunch counter.

Couple opportunities this round, red beets in the beet salad were crunchy and waited a bit at the table before waitress came by. She made up for it and rest of the experience was great. My husband and…read moreI are spending a lot of time in Hickory and have an apartment nearby to help with my daughter and son in law's infant twins. After a nice weekend with additional family in town for a special event, I suggested this establishment as I have had many good experiences here in the last 6 months. When we decided on this location, we called ahead and were told no reservations we taken, first come first served. So with the twins and their cousin, we had 3 9-month old babies. Very aware of the complexity of this, we brought hook on chairs and arrived around 5:00. The hostess tried to seat us at a much too small table in the back room, and when we inquired about a larger one, we were told it was "reserved ". . We were seated in a long booth in the bar. The waitress seemed very rushed and upon first visit to table asked if we were ready to order. We were not told of any specials, etc. Good news was that we had decided to be ready and get our full orders in quickly. We ordered an appetizer and cocktails to begin, which came out quickly. My Son in law asked for a fairly plain burger, but wondered if fried onions which were listed on another burger could be added. Waitress said " prob not... but I'll ask". It did not come with the added onions. I asked for my favorite pizza.. she said there's no pizza tonight. While waiting on food, we asked for a couple of orange slices, which we had taken from cocktails to entertain/feed the babies. Waitress said they couldn't do that because the oranges are for the bartender garnishes. I asked for another cocktail with extra oranges and thankfully was given one extra sliver. When our meal was finished, our curt waitress asked if we needed anything else, so we just asked for the check. No suggestion of dessert, etc. We were never visited by the manager to see how all was going... because if so I would have asked if this was establishment policy or simply a rude waitress. We tipped 15%... and let that be it. Note that the babies were fantastic... very little fussing at all. We kept all except the floor cleaned up after them. On our way out... we seemed to be on the waitress's way... she never said anything like have a good night, etc... but shouted "Behind you!" twice on her way to deliver another table's food, and as we were getting out of her way to leave. A disappointing end to a restaurant experience I'd enjoyed before. Note to self... not particularly baby friendly.

They aren't just friendly, they are cool in a professional manner. It looks like they have a late-night vibe with live music too. I didn't hang around for that but there's a back area with another bar, a space for live music, pool tables, and high tops. Oh! And they have outdoor seating at the regular restaurant when the weather is nice. Definitely going to be my go-to spot in Hickory, replacing Kickback Jacks Hickory (still love the Mooresville KBJ though). Hickory Social House is highly recommended!

We went with the four-cheese pizza, which was very good, nice crust and the right balance of gooey, flavorful cheeses. The beer selection was solid too, with a nice variety of local and craft options to choose from. The service was great from a server named Bob. It seemed like a busy night, and the noise level was pretty loud and it was hard to have a conversation without raising my voice, but I guess that's part of the lively vibe they're going for. Overall, it's a fun spot with great food and drinks, but if you're looking for a quiet evening, this might not be the place during peak hours. I'll definitely be back, though and maybe next time I'll try one of their food options or just the pizza again.
