This place was amazing! When we were traveling to the mountains for my boyfriend's birthday, we planned to stop somewhere different. We didn't want the typical Bojangles or chickfila. When we found Windy City via Yelp, we were taken back by the line. We said, "well, dang, they must be good," and decided to see if the inside was open. Thankfully we were open with limited seating. We walked in and immediately ordered our food. All the stay were practicing social distancing and wearing masks and face shields. The dining area was spotless and also the restroom. The staff was very friendly and engaging. We left with full bellies and full hearts.

Hard to beat this plus a drink for $7.

It had nothing to do with Windy City Grill, but my lunch adventure today did not start off well. I drove to Taylorsville to purchase some fresh North Carolina apples. Afterward, I searched Yelp to find a place to get a hot dog and settled on Big D's Diner. I headed that way only to discover that they were closed. Yelp says they are open, so we gotta fix that. A second Yelp search suggested Charlie Graingers in Hickory, so I headed that way. But when I got there, a handwritten sign in the window declared that they are now closed on Mondays. If I repeated here on the Yelp venue the language that came out of my mouth at that moment, they would probably shut down my account. Thanks for the heads up, Charlie. A THIRD Yelp search suggested Windy City grill. Lawdy, lawdy miracles still happen. They were open, but were going to close in 40 minutes. I broke a lot of traffic laws to get there, but as my favorite comedian, George Carlin, once said: "Cop didn't see it, I didn't do it." I got there in time. Would Windy City save my frustrating lunch adventure from utter ruin? Sort of. The order taker was very nice and the price cannot be beat. I ordered two dogs all the way, tater tots, and a Cheerwine. Everything was good, but just that: good. The hot dogs were a nice size and had perfect portions of mustard, slaw, chili, and onions. As I said, everything had a good taste, but the chili was too sweet for me. If you like mild, sweet chili, you'll probably love it. The tater tots were run of the mill. I liked the lay out: a U-shaped counter area and tables also in the shape of a U along the walls. The floor waitress was pretty anxious to wrap up her shift and banged her broom into my stool several times while sweeping up. I didn't care much for that. But I think the place is full of locals who don't mind--in fact, she gave one of them a back scratch right in front of everyone, and no one batted an eye. To summarize: A decent place to get a good hot dog in Hickory at a great price. And I HIGHLY recommend going up NC HWY 16N to Taylorsville and picking up some fresh North Carolina apples from Deal Orchards, Sugarloaf Orchards, or one of the others in the area. Try some new varieties you've never had before--Goldrush, for example, is pome perfection. They are delicious and you'll be supporting your local farmer.

Skip the quick service chain and hit this place instead. It's only open for breakfast and lunch so don't put it off. The drive through is great (my pup sometimes scores a piece of bacon) but if you want emersion in the local flavor the joint, go inside. Order at the counter then take a seat. It's sort of the "Cheers" of Hickory. 90% if their customers are regulars but they love newbies too. My kid loves the swivel stools at the lunch counter.

The pub is in the basement of a building which is not always a good thing but in this case, it worked well! The spiral staircase added character to the pub and the character kept on keepin' on as we entered the restaurant. The inside is brick and wood which gives a pleasant dive feel. The staff was friendly and we were seated promptly. It was around 7:30 pm on a Saturday evening so it was pleasantly uncrowded. We ordered Irish potato soup, fried cheese curds, the Reuben on sourdough bread and fish n' chips. They were all amazing!! I had the soup and it was delicious- it was their take on French onion soup with potatoes and carrots. They always have it so if you like soup- GET IT! The cheese curds were legit- the cheese was tasty and the breading just right. My wife ordered the Rueben on sourdough instead of the offered rye. The sandwich was a classic Reuben which my wife liked so much that I had to have a bite. It was great! Plenty of corned beef and hash with a sauce that added the right amount of tang. My son ordered the fish and chips. The fish was outstanding and my son and I both agreed that it was as good as fish that we had recently had in London- awesome! One note about the fries- the fries were scrumptious and came in a shape that seems like they shaved from a potato rather than the usual shape of a fry. The shape was neat but the taste was no joke- delicious. Oh, and if you like sweet tea, they have it.;) Overall, it was a great dinner in a great place with friendly people at a fair price. Now we know where to go the next time we are in Hickory. If you live in the area and haven't tried McGuires, do yourself a favor and go!!! Thanks, McGuire's Pub!!

We ordered the Cedar Plank Salmon, and the bourbon bacon glaze was outstanding. We also tried the Buffalo Chicken Flatbread, which had the perfect balance of cool ranch flavor and just the right amount of spice. For drinks, we enjoyed the Bananas Foster Old Fashioned, Maple Old Fashioned, and the Gummy Flight. Each one was well-crafted and delicious. One of the highlights of this location is the waterfront setting. We requested outdoor seating and were seated on the upper-level deck overlooking the water. There was live music at the lower-level outdoor bar on Saturday night, and we could still enjoy the music from our table upstairs while taking in the view. We were seated quickly, and every staff member we interacted with was friendly, attentive, and helpful. Although Copper Penny Grill has multiple locations, the Hickory location's waterfront atmosphere makes it especially memorable. If you're looking for great food, creative cocktails, live music, beautiful views, and excellent service, Copper Penny Grill in Hickory is well worth a visit. We look forward to returning and trying more of the menu.

I admired the artwork. The cascading glass waterfall is what first caught my eye when I entered. Fourk has been open since 2015 and serves New American cuisine with a twist. I was warmly welcomed when I entered and got seated at a round booth with a great view, near the artwork that caught my eye. They really know how to treat single diners here, which is rare these days. I liked that I got the best table in the place, and that they didn't attempt to seat me at the bar. My waitress was friendly and incredibly attentive. She helped me select a mocktail while going over the daily specials, and she even brought me the dessert menu near the beginning of my meal so I could plan ahead. The menu had many options in all price ranges. You can get sandwiches, burgers, salads and more high-priced entrees like mahi mahi, scallops and filet mignon. I went with the daily special, which was the Oscar Filet Mignon. It came with hollandaise sauce and grilled shrimp, and that combination intrigued me. I had the Party Punch mocktail, but it was perfect with strawberries, basil, pineapple and ginger ale. The filet mignon and topping were also amazing. I even had room for dessert and knew I had to try the blackberry wine cake, and that didn't disappoint either. This was a very special meal for me, as it marked the first leg of my trip to finish visiting all 100 North Carolina counties. With the great atmosphere, service, and food, Fourk set the bar incredibly high for the rest of my journey. I might need to make another special trip just to dine here again. The murder mystery nights and the live music nights are an added plus.
