This winery was definitely very interesting and unique. It is located inside a cave where you are surrounded by barrels, beautifully designed around a tunnel of caves. We did a wine tasting and our favorite was the 2022 Super T-Rex red wine. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Was definitely a fun, relaxing and cozy environment. The only negative was that when we went to pay for our bottle of wine, the server who had presented the wine tasting added a chunky tip to our bottle purchase, which we didn't authorize and didn't notice until later. We had already tipped him for the wine tasting service so we were taken aback. Other than that Deerfield was a nice experience and would probably come back just have to be more aware when we pay. read more

ROSÉ SPECIALTY In October 2022 I visited Deerfield for the first time wine tasting with a group of hop hip dancers I performed with in a showcase in the summer that year. There was a tasting menu that consisted of five wines. The two wines I enjoyed were the Checkerbloom Rosé, which after tasting became my favorite rosé, and Merlot Cuvee. During this visit I didn't purchase any wine because there was another winery we were visiting for a tasting menu. At that winery I preferred one of their red wines over the Merlot Cuvee from Deerfield. However I really loved the Checkerbloom Rosé. When I came home I ordered Checkerbloom Rosé online through Deerfield. I wasn't sure when I was going back to Deerfield. As I really like their one wine I wasn't driving to Deerfield just for the Checkerbloom Rosé. About the last couple of months I've been receiving emails from Deerfield Ranch Winery about the @Rose 2023 was soon to be sold out as it was selling for $10. I'm not going to order wine that I never tasted before. Before going to Deerfield I had to check online if the Checkerbloom Rosé was still available. Apparently it wasn't. Also the @Rose 2023 wasn't $10 anymore. On a hunch I decided to go to Deerfield. I went to Deerfield last week on a Sunday. As I entered the cave I went to the cash register. One of the workers Ben approached me. I asked him if @Rose 2023 was still $10. He answered yes. I also asked if the Checkerbloom Rosé was still available. He showed me the bottle. I decided to buy the Checkerbloom Rosé. Before buying I asked Ben if I could take a sip this rosé. It was sweet. Ben replied the @Rose 2023 is sweeter than the Checkerbloom Rosé, which is drier. I decided to buy three bottles of @Rose 2023 at $10 each. There are certain wineries that have specialties. For me during my two visits at Deerfield their rosés are better than from other wineries I've tasted. read more

Incredible experience inside a cave! Even better with wine! I came here to celebrate my birthday with my family. We requested the Signature Tasting in the Cave for $35 per person. We also purchased a cheese platter for $50, which came with plenty of cheese for all five of us. There is a lounge area in the middle of the cave with several tables and comfortable couches for wine tasting. We came in on a Sunday afternoon and were the first ones to arrive, so the entire space was available. After finishing the wine tasting, we had the chance to explore the rest of the caves and take pics. Courtney helped us with the wine tasting process; she is knowledgeable and so friendly. We had a good time at Deerfield Ranch's beautiful tasting room. First, the vineyard is beautiful as you drive up, and we got to see some bottling happen which I doubt is a rare occurrence but also probably not an everyday thing. Second, the tasting is in a dug out wine cave which means it was perfect during a hot June day. PLEASE DO NOT consider Deerfield Ranch Winery for your wedding!!!! I was a recent bride who held my wedding at Deerfield and despite plenty of planning and my easygoing nature, by the end of our experience I was massively pissed off and disappointed by the venue. They are lousy communicators, even going so far as to downright lie, and are hugely underprepared to host such important life events as weddings. I have so many issues I could discuss and receipts to back them up but let me give just a few examples: -- despite having in writing (via email, 8 months in advance) that the wine would be complimentary "so please do not worry about a beverage requirement!" later the GM refused to fulfill the agreement and offered us a magnum bottle of wine guests would sign during the reception instead (which was nowhere to be found on our big day) -- despite having in writing (via our signed contact, 8 months in advance) that our ceremony start time would be 4:30pm the GM later indicated it would be an extra $1,000 for a 4:30pm start time. It took several emails and one long phone call for 4:30pm to be re-agreed upon (remember this, this issue comes back up again later) -- despite agreeing verbally (via a phone call, 2 months in advance, and reiterated via email) that our setup team could come as early as they like (plan was 12pm) our crew was met with rudeness on arrival and was told our ceremony start time was agreed as 5:30pm (a blatant lie) and that setup couldn't start yet (causing a ripple effect of delays for the rest of the day) Again, I could go on but you get the point. Every step of planning was met with resistance and felt like pulling teeth to get even simple responses. The day of riddled with utterly avoidable stress & chaos. Overall, our whole experience was incredibly unprofessional and it truly tarnished our wedding day and that can never be mended. This venue may look beautiful, but the people running it are disorganized, untrustworthy, and downright unpleasant to work with. I strongly advise anyone considering Deerfield Ranch Winery to look elsewhere--you deserve better on your special day. read more

I've been coming here for years and love the tasting. I come up 2-3x a year. Free membership and pickup my shipments when I'm up there. The DRX is our fav and love the Syrah wine as well as their RedRex (red blend). The tastings are $35 pp and waived when you buy 3 bottles. Prices of bottles range from $24-125. Great for everyday table time to those for special occasions Staff is nice. Hutch is always our guy when we go. The ladies are also really nice and knowledgeable !! Dog friendly. There's a cave which on a hot day is a blessing and there's a lovely outdoor place. They offer cheese and crackers but usually after the tasting we buy a bottle and bring our own picnic to sit outside Salt. Absolutely Disrespectful and Unprofessional - Do Not Book Your Wedding Here We deeply regret choosing Deerfield Ranch Winery as our wedding venue. What should have been the most joyful day of our lives was marred by the venue's dishonesty, mismanagement, and shockingly rude staff. Despite having a signed contract clearly stating a 4:30pm ceremony start time and a complimentary case of wine, they later denied ever agreeing to either--blatantly ignoring the written agreement. This was only the beginning. On the actual day of our wedding, we discovered they had double-booked the venue with another event earlier in the day, preventing our setup crew from getting in on time. This caused unnecessary stress, delays, and chaos in what should have been a calm, exciting lead-up to the ceremony. To make matters worse, the Deerfield staff (DUSTIN) treated my family, our day-of coordinator, and even me--the groom--with open hostility and rudeness. It was absolutely unacceptable and deeply upsetting to be treated so disrespectfully on our wedding day. This venue may look beautiful, but the people running it are disorganized, untrustworthy, and downright unpleasant to work with. I was originally going to give them a 4 star rating, because even though I did eventually find a wine worth taking home, the rest of the tasting was just average at best (wine wise). But then I started putting some points down about the tasting as a whole, and realized they gave me everything I look for in a wine country tasting experience. Okay there is a tasting fee here, $35 per tasting and I believe they start you out with 5 pours, with some bonus pours if you're so inclined (always for me!). But their tasting is waived with the purchase of some wine, can't remember if there was a quantity requirement though. I am notorious for finding a wine I can buy and take with. I rarely leave a winery empty handed. All I need is to find one that I find special, usually a winery can accommodate at least one, if not several. So fees are usually a non-issue for me. On a super quiet and casual weekday afternoon, I was able to just walk in and get a tasting. Even though I will reserve a time if required, but sometimes I just like to walk in and see. Back in the day, it was very common to be able to do this. Now not so much, so to be able to swing this, just made my vacation time that much more relaxed. Then the wine pourers/associates were all quite cordial and friendly. They all seemed like retired people just doing something that they have passion for, so the pace is incredibly relaxed. They don't automatically spiel out a scripted history for the place, but with a few deliberate questions, you'll be able to a get a lot of info during your pours. The tasting room was in a wine cave. I may have only been in a couple of wine caves in all my years, and most times it is just part of a tour or something you walk past and just gawk at. Here, you find a seating area of your choice, could be a coffee table set up with couches or a large dining table if you have a large group. And there are plenty of high top table settings if it is only a couple of you. And the wine pourers will just go around and pour for each group. Again very relaxed and quite spaced out. And this cave is quite special. It can be blazing hot outside, but in here it is naturally crazy cool. Now you won't be getting the fresh breeze as say an outdoor patio tasting, but I say let those be those, and this be this. This really brings a unique twist to wine tasting. Actually in some of the halls in these caves are actual juice from crushed grapes in large plastic bins, because I came in October which is usually just right after harvest time. I've never been that up close with that much juice sitting in one area, but the aroma was surprisingly delicious. I was also stoked to have tasted and found a red that was right up my alley. Well balanced, not really meant to age for very long, but still had plenty of substance and grip. And it was only in the $30 range, so I got several. To find a wine that decent out in a winery, at this price point in this day and age, is actually quite rare. So I really got to give them props. Deerfield Ranch you made an already nice afternoon into a truly great and memorable one. read more

This was our second visit and still a great tasting. Hutch was a gracious host and very entertaining. The wines were very good especially the Zinfandel. It was unclear if food was allowed so we didn't bring snacks. If we had, we would have purchased a bottle and spent more time. The price of the wines range from moderate to expensive (one was $95.00 a bottle). This is a very cool place for tasting because of its unique cave location. Came to Deerfield Ranch winery for a tasting at the end of the day on Sunday. When we walked in, it was really interesting and intriguing because it was in a cave. We thought that the wines we tried were good, but I have to say we were disappointed at the end of the tasting when I asked if we could try one additional wine, and our wine pourer said "no ma'am". It is possible that we've been spoiled at other wineries we've visited (12) the last 4 days, where we've been able to try 1 additional wine after the specific tasting, but we were quite disappointed that we were not try just one additional wine at the end of the tasting. read more

We came to this winery because we have the Priority Wine Pass and they do 2 for 1 tastings here when you present the pass. Their wine tastings are otherwise $35/person and you get 5 wines. This was our first time here and the views are absolutely stunning, especially right now while all the rolling hills of vineyards are yellow for the fall. I have never been in a wine cave before and thought this was one of the coolest places for a tasting! We were the first ones there on a Saturday morning and had the place to ourselves. Our group of four got to sit on comfy couches and take our time sipping our way through the wine flight. The cave stays in the mid to low 60's, so be sure to bring a sweater or wear long sleeves. All the wines were delicious and we were especially impressed with their reds. While we did not purchase any bottles this time, this is certainly a winery that was memorable and checked all the boxes for us when looking for a great Sonoma wine tasting experience! read more

This place is amazing! So due to Covid they weren't doing tastings in the cave but we were fine with that. Actually the view from the area in front of the cave was so spectacular we can't imagine them using this even after covid. The individual that helped us was an older gentlemen and I can't recall his name but he was great. After our first sip of wine he came back and wondered if we would be interested in a red he had that wasn't in the tasting menu. Which we jumped to try and actually said that would be better as we aren't Chardonnay fans and we're hoping to sub that tasting out. Well let's just say we loved everything that we tried. So much that we ended up buying 4 bottles. During our tasting he gave us an overview of how the winery came to be and told us we were more than welcome to walk around in the cave on our own. We enjoyed a lovely view of the mountains while trying the different wines and really liked the welcoming and laid back environment of Deerfield. The fragrance is spot on, but the flavor falls flat (and we are easy to please). Each wine was one note, and the whites felt almost watered down. Maybe after decanting them, it gets better. This was the only place we did not purchase a bottle or finish our pours. We had a two for the price of one tasting at $35. Great place! I went here today with a wine tasting group - what a treat. We were put in a separate area among the wine barrels. We were treated to generous tastes of 5 wines. They all were good but our table of 6 agreed our top two favorites were the 2012 Red Rex (blend) and the 2012 Estate Syrah. Our server was Cathy who did a marvelous job explaining the wines and giving us some background on the building of the cave and the company. The caves are quite unique and a bit of a "must-see" in the area and their general seating area for tasting is lovely, comfy and serene. It's not unusual to go spelunking in a winery up in Sonoma since the excavated caves in the hills provide the perfect temperature to keep the wine barrels. But it probably turns into 'spedrunking' pretty darn quick when you talk about the generous tasting selection at Deerfield Ranch. Winemaker Robert Rex and his family have been raising grapes for over a quarter-century, and it shows in the rich quality of their Merlots and Cabernets. The real draw here is the network of caves that covers 23,000 square feet. We walked through massive redwood doors and walked a long corridor of barrels to get to the tasting room (photo: http://bit.ly/1B58wT6). Once there, it provides a most relaxing environment with overstuffed sofas and large tables that allow you to taste the wines at your own leisurely pace (photo: http://bit.ly/1A2SS7N). We were able to sample seven different wines poured by Rex himself who patiently described the grape and fermentation in loving detail. I was here with two close friends who really know their wines, so the conversations with Rex were quite an education in the art of being a vintner. My favorites were the 2008 Merlot Cuvée with its long finish, the versatile 2009 Cabernet Reserve which would have tasted great with a medium rare ribeye, and especially the 2002 DRX, a Bordeaux-style Meritage blend that almost seemed like a bargain at $95 a bottle. Almost. Wine amateur that I am, I was more comfortable with my $30 bottle of the Merlot Cuvée. The winery tends to get overlooked compared to the higher profile Kunde and Kenwood wineries across Hwy 12, but it's well worth a stop to go 'spedrunking'. read more

Everyone is super friendly that works there, love what they do and want you to feel at home. Today it was 100 degrees out so the escape of the cool cave was that much more special and enjoyable. Deerfield Ranch Winery has quickly became one of my favorite wineries. I am not being biased because I got married here, but speaking with honesty, its one of the best Zinfandel Wines out there! I have tasted maybe 6 different wines they carry and they all are very good! My husband loves the Zin, which he highly recommends. I absolutely love the location, as I mentioned, I chose Deerfield Ranch Winery as my wedding location where we held ceremony and reception plus after party! It is such a lovely spot with beautiful surrounded by wineries and curvy hills. The amount of support and help we got from the Deerfield Ranch Winery before, during and after the wedding is really overwhelming. It was great pleasure working with them and Deerfield Ranch Winery being so accommodating at making my vision come to live. Big shut out to Bill, he has been a great help to me and easy to work with on answering all types of crazy wedding questions I had! One of the things I take away from Deerfield Ranch Winery is as soon you enter the cave you smell the wine. The fact that the winery is a cave is super cool, it doesn't get better than that! I was sold when I heard "wine cave". My brother-in-law had been to Deerfield Ranch prior to our visit and was less enthused than I was. I didn't get his lack of enthusiasm until we arrived. Sonoma is gorgeous and so it's nice to drink outside in the warm sunshine and admire the rolling hills and vineyards. You don't get this experience in a cave. Another downfall of the cave is that this cave seemed very man-made and generic. I thought the cave would be more musty, damp, dark and romantic, but it was just a big open room with a bunch of comfy leather seating. Nothing wrong with the seating; it was actually quite comfortable, but I was expecting more atmosphere. The wines were fine, but I wasn't a fan of any of the whites. A couple of the red blends were interesting, but of course the ones I liked were the most expensive bottles. I liked the fact that the winery gives back to charities, but I wonder if they charge more for the bottles that give back to charity. Overall, I had a nice time, but this was not my favorite winery due to the lackluster wine and atmosphere. read more

I'm glad I visited this place, but from my first phone call, I was kind of on the fence as to if we should visit. The woman on the phone was kind of snarky and sarcastic (Me: Would it be okay if we come on by now, are you guys busy? "Sure... are you looking for a job?"). Upon visiting, I immediately identified who it was I had spoken to on the phone, and turns out she is just a very sarcastic kind-of-gal? We had an eventful time with her during the tasting, although our tasting was peppered with combative and inappropriate questions. ("So you all went to Cal. Did you all graduate? Well.. where are you all working now? How do people at non-profits even make money?") At one point she went on a long-winded tangent about how she dated an asian man, and made it a point to lock eyes with the asian member of our wine tasting group and say that it's not true what they say about asian guys. (?!?!) I'm glad the member of our party didn't get offended but I was pretty much dying of uncomfortableness. She didn't mean any harm I don't think... but the experience was pretty tone-deaf and crass. Her behavior was in stark contrast to the high quality of the wine and the beauty of the winery (it's in a cave!!!).
