filthy. neglectful. they lied to my face about the care my mother received. i had to demand her…read morerelease after just 72 hours due to lack of care, failure to administer medications, theft of clothing, and we both became violently ill with rotavirus within 48 hours. the administration is all about maximizing profit by cutting services/staff, and the filthy conditions are proof of that. they broke state law by charging me for her medical records even though they were being used to support her medicaid application, and made me pack up my bedridden mother and drive 30 miles to retrieve them, even when i requested repeatedly to have them mailed, which, by law, i am entitled to. furthermore, not only did they charge me $.75/ page, they charged me for dozens of duplicate pages, but after reviewing their version of the records, and comparing them to my own photos, notes, and time-stamped emails, i found fraudulent claims/entries, fabrications of care, and outright lies within the records. i allege the administrator, kate costello, directed staff to do so, and i will gladly testify to this assertion under oath in court...a place they've persistently threatened me with as a result of my refusal to pay their "services rendered" invoice. i've contacted county, state, and federal representatives as a result of our terrible experience in this hellhole, and now a regional media outlet has agreed to embark on a long term investigation into hudson valley rehabilitation as a result of our story. stay tuned, and keep your loved ones as far away from this place as possible.

You can imagine how vulnerable I was with the brutality of the pain and feeling lost. Fortunately, I was able to get into the Baptist Home at Brookmeade in Rhinebeck. (Not sure that's the correct name.) This is an amazing place. The nursing staff at all levels is kind, professional, attentive, patient, supportive, caring, respectful, and responsive. And whatever positive words you can add. I had seen a negative comment prior to coming here and, honestly, it is hard to imagine anything happening here that is less than perfect. When in pain and suffering, just able to wait out the healing process, one becomes scared and powerless. I'm 80 years old and still working. I travel for business and am completely on my own. The staff…read moreat Hancock Hall was incredibly loving, caring and seemed to genuinely enjoy their jobs and working with elderly patients. They kept in excellent contact with our family throughout her stay, and my mother was very content there. The facility itself was always clean (no typical institutional smell) and they stayed on top of medications, kept her engaged with activities, and closely monitored and assisted with her food. Aside from that, during Covid, the steps they took and the frequent communication with families was exemplary. We could not have asked for more for our mother. We recently visited a relative receiving palliative hospice care there (they have many levels of…read moreservice, btw). We did not tour the building, but what we saw of the facility and staff was reassuring. Protocols were clear; PPEs were provided and hand sanitizer was just steps away from every location. The rooms were bright and cheerful and the all areas that we saw were tidy and smelled clean. Our relative's room and bed were fresh looking and it appeared that good care was being taken.

I am giving this facility a ZERO because my mother's stay there broke my heart…read more My mom arrived at your facility on June 22, 2026, as a vibrant, outgoing, funny, incredibly intelligent 92-year-old woman. She loved to talk, loved people, loved life, and still had her spark. By the time I picked her up on July 31, 2026, she was an emotional wreck. She cried constantly. She was terrified. She repeatedly told us she just wanted to die. No family should ever have to watch someone they love lose the will to live. I watched my mother lose her confidence, her dignity, and her joy. We dealt with repeated issues involving her oxygen, unanswered call bells, excessive waits for help, being left sitting for hours, and having to fight for even the most basic care. What hurt even more was how she was treated. I witnessed rough handling. I watched her become fearful of certain caregivers. I heard staff speak to her disrespectfully, ignore her, and was even told that one aide instructed another not to talk to or answer my mother. No one deserves to be treated that way, especially a 92-year-old woman who depended on others for help. Our friends and family witnessed the same heartbreaking decline. There were days when I spent hours on FaceTime with my mom simply so she would know she wasn't alone. During those calls, I witnessed many of the things that should never happen in a rehabilitation facility. I should never have had to monitor my mother's care from over 800 miles away. The situation became so bad that I left my home in South Carolina and flew to New York because I was genuinely afraid for both my mother's emotional well-being and her physical safety. No daughter should ever feel she has to rescue her mother from a rehabilitation facility. Not every employee was like this. There were truly wonderful, compassionate people who cared deeply for my mom, and I will always be grateful to them. Thank you to Eva, Nick, Yolanda, Dovid, Tracy, Dr. Z, the physical therapy team, and the many others who treated her with kindness, respect, patience, and genuine compassion. Time and again, when we reached out, you did everything you could to help, and I will never forget it. Unfortunately, the dedication of those individuals could not overcome the repeated failures we experienced throughout my mother's stay. I was especially disappointed by the lack of involvement from the new administrator, Sophia Sutton. Two weeks before I removed my mother from the facility, I sent her two detailed emails outlining my concerns. Her explanation was that she was too new and hadn't had time to read everything. As a daughter desperately trying to protect her 92-year-old mother, that response was incredibly discouraging. She also cancelled a meeting requested by her own social worker. Although it was eventually rescheduled, the same pattern continued. Promises weren't kept. Phone calls weren't returned. I continued leaving messages, but the silence spoke louder than any words ever could. The photograph of my mom wrapped in a towel was taken after she injured her neck while being put into bed. She and the aide lost their balance, twisting her neck. My mother does not blame the aide. She was a documented fall risk and should have had two people assisting with transfers. Because of that injury, she lost nearly a week of physical therapy. Today, my mother is home with us, and she is thriving. Just four days after I brought her home, on August 4, 2026, we took her to the ocean. For the first time in weeks, her beautiful smile returned. That smile says more than words ever could. She laughs again. She tells stories. She enjoys being with her family. She has her personality back. The difference between the woman who arrived at your facility, the woman who left it, and the woman she is today is impossible to ignore. Our mother deserved better. Every patient deserves better. Every family deserves the peace of mind of knowing their loved one will be treated with dignity, compassion, kindness, and respect. Sadly, that was not our experience, and for that reason, I cannot recommend this facility.

Her quality of life at Nathaniel Witherell is SO superior to that at her previous nursing home. Many staff have been at Nathaniel Witherell for years and are clearly vested in patient care. The facility is lucky to have a large cadre of volunteers who assist with numerous enriching activities - Bingo, Snap, many musical events, religious activities and more. There are special events galore - holiday dinner, ice cream socials, spelling bees. Maintaining high quality of life at a nursing home is difficult, and no place is perfect. Based on my experience with my sister (and my mother prior to that) I can say with confidence that Nathaniel Witherell is superior to other options. Friends and family of residents have the option of joining the Family Council whose members meet regularly with administration to provide feedback on what's going well and what's not.
