Prior to working with Camilo, losing weight/burning fat was somewhat of a mystery to me. I felt little agency over my body and felt I always generally looked the same regardless of if I worked out. Then I started at Orange Theory where the first time in my life I enjoyed "the gym" and met Camilo. I knew that my exercise was doing good for me but I knew little about nutrition and how really changing my diet could shift my body and health even more, so I decided to work with Camilo to learn and see what was possible. Camilo taught me to track my food, and about macros- how it's important not to eat less than your metabolic base, to eat enough protein to build muscle and boost your metabolism, and to cut carbs to a sustainable but lowered amount. I learned to track my steps and how to incorporate more walking into my day even though I have a desk job. I learned a lot more about lifting weights, and started lifting heavier than I've ever done and feeling stronger than I've ever been. It was not easy, but every week I lost about a pound. After 14 weeks I lost about 14 pounds roughly, went from 33.5% to 24.8% body fat, and lost about 1.25 inches off my waistline. Throughout it all Camilo was incredibly supportive. Through his biweekly check ins and just generally being on call to support when I had questions or felt frustrated and wanted to give up because I felt progress was too slow or too hard. This is my second time around training with Camilo. 6 years ago I trained with Camilo and I was able to get in the best shape of my life. My weight struggles started in my late 20s. If it wasn't trying the next fad diet, it was hiring a coach from 24 hour fitness; who recommended me to eat 1200 calories and drink muscle milk. Of course I was the queen of trying every diet plan in the industry. But what I wasn't good at, was at maintaining the weight loss and that would mean putting back all the weight loss and then some more. The bigger weight loss came in 2017. I joined Orangetheory and Weight Watchers. I lost 85 pounds and did three marathons. In late 2019 I was gaining some of the weight back. But decided to go hard on one of Orangetheory's challenges starting in January 2020. And then that's when everything changed for me as well as for everyone else. So since the gyms were closed I was not into exercising, it was boring to do it by myself. My food habits were down the drain. I would Doordash foods to my house and didn't want to cook. It was a depressing time for me. In fear of not getting my dad sick, I didn't see him close to a whole year; since I was considered an essential worker. 2021 started out as a disillusionment of me. I had gained all the 85 pounds back! My first class at Orangetheory was on Sunday February 7th, 2021. It was outdoors. And it was with a coach I never met before. His name? Coach Camilo. What a rude awakening it was for me! I had forgotten the feeling of exercising with form. I couldn't run, I couldn't lift a heavy weight, and rowing? My midsection was in the way. Let me tell you a short story on how I ended up working with Camilo... Once upon a time, I wanted to get fit during the pandemic. I signed up for orange theory and took a few classes with Coach Camilo. At the onset of 2020, I made a decision to make the best of a new year - and subsequently, the best of shelter-in-place - and prioritize my health. I never thought I could look at myself and see an athlete until I began working with Camilo. I have been a runner since I was in high school, running as far as 30 kilometers for a race. Unfortunately, I took a nasty spell in Sept 2020 and fell, catching myself with straight arms, locked elbows. I sprained my shoulder and the scar tissue made cross training impossible. I gave up on trying to do load bearing exercises like planks and even took a LONG break from running. I gained weight and kind of gave up on my health. Yeah, sure it was a pandemic, but because I didn't see myself as an athlete, I figured there was no point in caring about my body size or my abilities. I met Camilo through my local fitness-class based gym. He was constantly having to provide me modifications for exercises because of my shoulder injury. One day he spoke with me about mobility and an opportunity to work with him on reestablishing my range of motion and even getting stronger. After a particularly humbling workout, I decided to follow through with him. Here I am, 6 months later and I am able to do push-ups, squat with a bar, perform deadlifts, and kinda do chin-ups. Camilo is laser focused on teaching you about your body inside and out, he is a fitness nerd which is absolutely to your benefit and is attuned to each and every one of his clients picking up when you come in distracted, tired, angry, etc. I came in thinking this would be a 3 months situation but Camilo has far outpaced his value teaching me about how to optimally move and fuel my body. I first met Camilo while taking his class at Orangetheory. Right away I could tell he was/is very passionate about fitness and overall bodily health, while also being super approachable and an overall cool dude. Prior to working with Camilo, I was fairly active but never really felt like I could hold onto the physical progress. I would fall into a lot of yo-yo type patterns with fitness and nutrition - a lot over exercising without eating enough.
