Absolutely do the turkey dinner train! We were so impressed with how good the food was! Full turkey dinner and they served it directly onto your plate so you can pick portions and selections just how you like it. Everything was delicious, turkey was moist, and the mashed butternut squash was divine. The apple crisp had apples so tender they melted in your mouth. The serving staff were so much fun and kind as well, shout out Carlos and his partner! The trees weren't too colorful yet but still beautiful scenery. The seats were not super comfortable but it's the price you pay for an authentic experience. The tables were surprisingly large. The train was very warm but felt better once we got moving. I recommend getting seats that are odd numbers because you'll be closer to the lake. The train goes down and back but does not turn around so if you get the lake side you'll get it on the way out and back. Also if you get table 1 you'll be served first! read more

Went on the turkey train today for the first time. A scenic two-hour train ride while you're served a delicious Hart's Thanksgiving dinner. It was a wonderful trip. The people on the train were amazing. They served us a beautiful turkey dinner from a local family restaurant called Harts turkey farm in Meredith, New Hampshire. Gloria was one of the service and she was out of this world. That was her last day on the train she was going back to work in the restaurant because now the holiday season is coming. That's a busiest time of the year. I would definitely do that again. It was lots of fun. We saw really great foliage and the man doing the train. I don't member his name. I apologize for that was very informative knew lots of things that I didn't even know myself about the area I feel it's definitely one of the better train I've ever had and it certainly interesting. read more

Fun activity that gives a different view than normal of the lake. Laid back and low key would be my definition of this lazy trip.

Recently we rode on the 4 hour fall special and, I wish I could say i enjoyed it but I'm sorry to say I was terribly disappointed in our accommodations on the train. We purchased First Class tickets. The photo on the web showed a car with about 20 or so seats. Looked comfortable and fun. We boarded the train and we're taken to a car with 2 seats and we were left there alone for the trip. When our host gave the initial talk, he invited us to come into the other car. Then we returned to our "private car." We saw people if they walked through to see the car and most people said, "why are you here all alone?" Good question!!! We could hear the host talking to the guests in the other car about interesting RR info. We could hear everyone talking and having fun and we felt very left out. On the return trip we asked the host if there were seats in the other car. He said sorry but no. I wish I could say I had a good time anyway but I did not. We felt isolated and left out! read more

Went from Weirs Beach to Meredith. Fell asleep for the return trip. I think this is a fun trip for young kids but not for adults. I'd take the mail boat tour instead of this train if you are an adult. The guy selling train tickets at Weirs Beach is an awesome dude. He goes out of his way to make this fun for kids and adults too. read more

Such a fun time riding on an antique train from weirs beach with our train obsessed toddler! We did the 1 hour ride which was just enough and passed some lovely views along the way. Staff was very friendly and provided paper towels for us to wipe the windows which were fogging from the rain. We had lunch on the train which was quite good and enjoyed watching them move the engine to the other end of the train to head back the other way. So lovely! read more

Did the "Rail and Sail" option with the train and the M/S Mount Washington cruise on Lake Winnipesaukee. Train was a little late due to the parade the town of Meredith threw for me and my sister arriving. They called it a 250th birthday parade, but we weren't fooled. Even the police helped us get to the rail parking lot. Not sure that would have happened if the parade wasn't for US. haha. Enjoyed the ride on the train! There are some services with the train crew, but we had our own water/snacks. Those windows on the old Pullman cars are HEAVY! I thought I could open them...nope. Get assistance from the train crew, they do this all the time. Dave, our conductor, was very informative and our service manager (sorry, didn't catch her name) was hilarious to talk with and see how she interacted with the customers. Definitely worth the time and money! Maybe they will throw a parade for you too, but I suggest you get there early.. haha. read more

Had a great time. $15 for a 2 hr scenic rail tour is very reasonable - from the dozen or more that I've been on. They serve food and drinks - ok prices that are not too inflated (and they threw in extras for our group) and decent box lunch type food AND ice cream. Despite food service, the train is clean -- they even seemed to have cleaned all the windows since the last ride. I think this one's raiting at 2 or 3 stars is low -- rating from people who would've disproved of any scenic railroad ride...compared to other railroads, this is probably $5/person low and every railroad goes through some backyards in a populate area. Also took the Conway Scenic Railroad while in the area and though I enjoyed both, I actually slightly preferred this one. The lake opens up and provides better views, I think. Overall am pleased, vacation money well spent. read more

So glad we took the tour today! The people that run the office where you get the tickets were super helpful and nice. There is a small gift shop there as well as three very clean unisex bathrooms. I was really impressed with the level of cleanliness in the bathrooms. Tickets didn't seem overly priced. For a 2 hour ride it was $20 adults/$16 kids. 2 and under ride free. After we boarded the ladies that welcome you aboard will also take drink and snack orders. There was even a guy going around making balloon animals for kids. He was really talented! It was cool to see the lake from the train and just take time to relax and enjoy the view. read more

I love trains. I think I've said that in other reviews. Trains are wonderful. I was with friends in New Hampshire and found the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad on the net. Hadn't heard of it before, so I conned my friends in to taking the trip. There are two sides to Lake Winnipesaukee (which I'm going to call "Lake W" since typing the whole name is tiresome already). The wealthy side in Wolfsboro is home to the likes of Mitt Romney (in fact Mitt has a summer house there) and his yachting friends. The other side near Meredith is more like a classic summer getaway - boardwalk, amusement park, rides and people who will never use the word "yacht" in the same sentence as "I own a". The Lake W Scenic is on the Meredith side and runs for a few miles along the lake with great views from the train of both the lake and summer homes. It stops in Weirs Beach (think Atlantic City without the crime and casinos) and continues a bit futher. The ride is simple and enjoyable. For a few extra dollars you can buy a hobo lunch - a nice picnic lunch with sandwich, chips, cookie and drink all delivered in a logo handkercheif tied to a stick - just a like a hobo. The cookie is huge. Think dinner plate huge. If you're looking for amusement park thrills, this train isn't it. But, if you're ready for a comfortable, fun ride along the lake with a nice lunch for a very reasonable price, they've got that in spades. Oh - I TOTALLY FORGOT: They have an ice cream parlor car! Yes! Yes! Yes! - okay, I just moved my stars from four to five. You can ride in a car that is an ice cream parlor and eat your lunch and ice cream while watching the lake. You have to love that. And as soon as I wrote about the ice cream parlor car - I also remembered they have a guy who makes balloon hats and animals for the kids. That's cool too. read more

BEST TRAIN RIDE YET in our local New England area.... my wife loves the train rides so this was EXTRA special today.. my 10 year old gave it a four out of 10 stars BUT and yes BUT ... if I thought to bring ice cream money it probably would of been much higher... bring ice cream money for the kids even if you bought snacks... LOL!!! We paid $50 (for 3 ... 2a/1c) for a 2 hour ride... Weirs to Meredith, Meredith to Weirs, Weirs to Laconia and back... TRAIN -- This was a refurbished modern train with nice clean cloth seats with a big table... you could layout a newspaper and read or play cards if you like... very comfortable.... you can open the windows I believe but this September chilly so we didn't... I did notice the temp of the car warming up so was glad to step outside. I loved the fall decorations!!! SCENERY - Sit on lake side if you want great pictures/views of the lake... Loved seeing all the boats, jet skiers, islands, boats, wild animals (including a loon and a fox!!!), mountains in the background... I would say about 50-70% of the ride has some great lake scenery ... Sit on the other side if you want to see some pictures of BIG houses from NH's rich and famous... and the not so rich and famous near Weirs... great plan to look for a rental property, new home, our just admire vacation homes... CONDUCTOR - Leo, the conductor really really made the trip special... he was funny before we even stepped on the train... even did the Polar Express punch cut out with my son... he was very very funny and very witty THROUGH THE ENTIRE RIDE... was good with the kids and adults and seniors alike... He's been working there for 20 years ... A+++ definitely an ASSET for this railroad... FOOD - They do offer packaged icecream for $3 as well as beverages or you can bring your own ... we did... I would love love love to see a LUNCH train ride. We did that on Conway Scenic and it was really special. Maybe they offer this in the summer or in the future... KIDS -- The two hour trip may be too long and the 1 hour trip may be too short... but if it's your first time I recommend the two hour trip... Overall... this is a TREASURE for the Laconia/Meredith/Lake Winni area ... Bring your camera!!! I think is SO SO MUCH better than the Conway Scenic Railroad which gets a lot of tourism up in North Conway... A MUST DO!!! read more

Since I was a kid (some say I still act like one) I've had this thing about trains. Had them (toys) as a child, & whenever I get the chance to ride on one I take it. This two hour ride from Meredith with a stop @ Weir's beach and ending with a turnaround @ Lakeport is not one of the better Scenic trains rides. For $14.00 adults get the two hour ride. The two stops are not long enough for you to get off the train. You can order a "hobo's" boxed lunch for $10.00 which consisted of a simple sandwich with chips a soda & cookie. They also had ice cream for sale. You may also be entertained by someone walking around claiming to be a hobo. The ride is relaxing & good if the weather is less than perfect. But other than trees, some decent lake views & summer homes there is little to see out the windows. The Main St location has some back up equipment standing around & a very small gift shop, but is far from a destination if your a train enthusiast. read more

Let me start off by saying I have a 3 year old who loves trains and a husband who loves lake/mountain scenery so this was perfect for us. We took the 1 hour train out of Laconia because I didn't think my daughter would have the attention span to last more than that, plus I am six months pregnant and can't last much more than an hour without a bathroom. There IS a bathroom on board which was a great surprise even though we didn't use it. I get anxiety not having a bathroom around with my pregnant self and my potty trained kid so I was pretty happy with that. We sat on the lakeside per another yelpers advice, the train does not turn around but the conductor switches from the front to the rear to head back to Laconia. There were nice views of the lake and surrounding houses. They have lunch for $12/sandwich, which we opted out of because I can't see myself spending that on a Pb&j that my daughter won't eat, but I digress. You can bring snacks and drinks aboard but they ask for no coolers. There's a balloon man on board who makes balloon animals for free, he does accept tips. He was very nice and quick too! The conductor was funny and great with the kids, making jokes and letting the kids help punch the ticket. I will say I think it was over priced for a 3 year old at $12, but priceless to see my kid so happy. She says the best thing about our vacation was the train! read more

This place gives a pleasant train ride with some nice glimpses of scenery, but it's certainly no Durango & Silverton Railroad, nor even a North Conway Scenic Railroad. Not much in the way of old rolling stock, either. Worth taking a ride if you're in the Lakes Region, but not worth a trip to ride this trainwhen the Conway Scenic Railroad with much better views, an interesting historic station, lots of rolling stock to explore, and located right in the heart of beautiful North Conway is less than an hour away. We took the dinner train, which serves a meal from neighboring Harts Turkey farm along the ride. This was our third semi annual trip. There won't be a fourth. It's pricey, but you figure you get a train ride and a meal. BUT we had the loudest, most unprofessional waitress ever. She cackled. I'm all about down home service, but come on. My 14 year old rolled her eyes. The meal was classic Harts, Turkey, squash, mashed, gravy and stuffing. I could have used a lot more turkey. Overall great meal. Should have skipped the dessert, an apple cobbler. Eh, more like warm apple slices with some cinnamon as an afterthought. The views were lovely. The lake wasn't too crowded. If you like trains, take the ride, but save some money and go directly to Harts for a standard issue giant turkey dinner. read more

I am so disappointed that I have to say this because train rides in general are really fun. Yes the staff is fine and very polite and kind and the train looked pleasant and so did parts of the lake. We took a two hour train ride my mother and I. We were so horrified at how uncomfortable and how incredibly boring the ride was that it took us an hour to begin to recover from how horrible it was. For a child maybe it would be good and it seems like the reviews are promoting that. The prices for things on the train are astronomical in my opinion and a waste of money and I love train rides but this was just some thing I would never encourage anyone to ride. A week ago I tried The hour train ride with my children and we were bored to tears. You do see some scenes from the lake which are pretty but most of the ride was trees and the back of peoples homes. I was very disappointed and so is my mother and so were the people we were sitting next to. I am sorry that I have to say these things about such a beautiful place and I don't mean to put this place down but do not can I tell you go on the train ride unless you don't mind feeling like you're in hell. read more

Love, love, love! My family and my sister-in-law's family went for the two hour ride from Meredith down toward Laconia and back and we had a GREAT time. It was a beautiful ride. The four little boys in our group had a blast. The conductor was amazing with the kids, talking to them, letting them try on his conductor hat, and giving us a tour of the caboose. There was a guy walking through the train making balloon animals for the kids, too. We had a great time and definitely got our money's worth. read more

When booking on line, if you want to get lunch on train be sure to check off the box for this, otherwise there is food with reasonable prices on the boat ( I believe was cash only though), and also when waiting for the boat ride while at Weirs beach though the prices there are going to make you feel like you were robbed. scenic it's not, unless you want to look at peoples houses, this train travels right through peoples back yards. there were a few good "views" of the lake, but nothing i coudn't have seen from the road! don't waste your time/money on this if you are looking for scenery, if the kiddo's love trains, maybe worth it, but my little man, didn't seem over enthused by it. read more

Five of us took the two hour ride from Meredith, three adults and two kids. We went in July and it was not crowded. The train is clean and seats are comfortable and it's an interesting ride going out but boring on the ride back as you go the same route. We thought it was expensive at $19 per adult and almost as much for kids. Having the ballon man is fun for the kids and although "free" you should tip the guy. The train was a nice diversion for a vacation day but not really worth the price. read more

Went with friends on the foliage scenic ride and honestly there was not much scenery other than peoples houses for the most part. Very few spots to see foliage. In fact I see more just driving down the street. The majority of the view is also blocked by high embankments along the sides of the route. We got to see some deer on a deer farm, but not much by way of scenery, especially if you pick the wrong side to sit, which there should be no wrong side if this is a scenic train ride right? We did the 11:00 and had a buffet lunch at the Common Man in Plymouth, which was included in the cost of the ticket. Unfortunately the food was cold and I could not even eat it so I left hungry. I will say that the people working on the train were funny and that made our trip more enjoyable. So basically I paid $55,00 for an amature comedy show. Won't do this ride again if I can help it. read more
