Now it's my son's turn for his first round and I'm so glad we have the option of Benson Orthodontics now that we are in TN! We had NO IDEA just how terrible our previous orthodontist was until we started treatment here. We have felt welcome from the moment we called to make our first appointment. Everyone is so friendly. Dr. Benson was very informative when explaining the treatment my son would need, and Rhonda is fantastic at explaining and working with you to figure out the financial aspect of it all. The welcoming environment is just the tip of the iceberg. We were greeted with a front row parking spot marked with my son's name and balloons for his first appointment, which made him feel a little less nervous. The young lady who placed his brackets and wires talked him through what she was doing, while she was doing it, so he wasn't so anxious. I love that I'm able to sit in the treatment area with him and that they have a brushing station and video games nearby, so I don't have to worry about making sure he brushes at school before his appointment if we don't have time. At our previous orthodontist, we felt like we were being herded through like cattle and never felt welcome. I love that at Dr. Benson's office, they have incentives for the patients to take good care of their braces. Being rewarded for such tedious, not-so-fun tasks is fantastic for a 9 year old! Another thing that I thought was great, was the bag full of items they send home with you to help in caring for your new mouth full of metal. They gave us wax, floss, flossers, a new waterpik, toothbrush, toothpaste, a Benson tee, a guide with a list of what my child should avoid eating, etc. and a really great laminated placard to stick to his bathroom mirror that has real photos of how it looks to properly brush and clean braces, with instructions. It also has photos of what broken wires and other problems look like, so he can stay aware if something doesn't feel right in his mouth. AND to top it all off, Dr. Benson, himself, not an assistant or other member of his staff, called the first night after getting the braces placed, to check on my son. I've NEVER experienced the level of patient care provided at this office. Which is very depressing given the amount of money we gave the previous office for my daughter's care. Also, I can't end this review without mentioning the coffee station in the lobby and fresh, soft cookies on the front counter for you on your way out. My son actually WANTS to go to the orthodontist. I can't wait until they start treating my daughter for her final round of treatment as well, because I feel like she missed out on a better experience by not having Benson Orthodontics as an option. I even apologized to her for it.

We had a pretty "Heated" 3 way phone call with us, Oxford's insurance lady" Mrs Laura" and Delta Dental. After 65 years I have never come across a Dental Practice that doesn't honor their agreements with insurance companies. $ 4,195 treatment and Oxford wants me to pay $3,195 over 6 months because Delta Dental will pay over 18 months. Our other insurance is paying them $1,000. Why do we pay for insurance if Dental Offices still wants us to pay up front. Don't use Oxford unless you can pay upfront for services and let them pay you back when your insurance pays them. Do we get interest for that money owed to us?

My biggest concern is their billing and insurance estimate process. In my case, my estimate appeared to be calculated using in-network benefits even though Cedar City Dental Care was out-of-network with my specific plan. This made my estimated responsibility look significantly lower than what I ultimately owed after insurance processed the claim. To be very clear: I understand what an estimate is. I know it isn't a guarantee and the final amount can change. I was NOT disputing my final bill. My concern was how the estimate was calculated. An estimate may change, but it should still begin with the correct network information. This is especially important for Delta Dental PPO patients. Cedar City Dental Care accepts Delta Dental PPO, but accepting the insurance does NOT necessarily mean they are in-network. In my situation, they were out-of-network with Delta Dental PPO. Delta Dental Premier is different. I tried explaining this distinction to the front-desk employee, but I felt like she didn't understand or listen to what I was saying. My question wasn't whether they ACCEPT Delta Dental. I wanted to know why my estimate appeared to be calculated as IN-NETWORK when my benefits would process them as OUT-OF-NETWORK. I eventually spoke with the office manager, whose name sounded like Madalyn, Madeline, or something similar. She didn't clearly identify herself, so I'm uncertain of the spelling. She told me she was the office manager, the owner, and that there was nobody higher than her at the location for me to speak with. I found her extremely rude and dismissive. She repeatedly responded with some version of "It's just an estimate" and told me to contact my insurance company rather than listening to the actual concern. Again, I KNOW IT'S AN ESTIMATE. I wasn't asking them to waive my bill or refusing to pay. I was asking why the estimate wasn't calculated using the correct network status. Had it been calculated as out-of-network initially, I could have received a more realistic estimate before agreeing to treatment. My experience with Dr. Marissa Dopson also contributed to my decision to leave. She has always entered wearing a full face mask, performed the examination, and left relatively quickly. I respect protective equipment, but I've never seen my dentist's full face and don't feel I've developed any meaningful patient-provider relationship with her. There is very little conversation, and I often feel like I'm simply the next patient on the schedule. I also explained that I already wear a retainer, yet I still felt there was a significant push toward Invisalign. Combined with everything else, my experience has left me feeling that this office cares more about numbers, production, additional treatments, sales, and money than people. I don't want to feel like a sales opportunity at my dentist. I want to feel like a patient. I believe the insurance and estimate practices here deserve closer examination. I am NOT accusing anyone of insurance fraud or stealing money without evidence, but my experience raises enough concerns that I hope the appropriate people review how estimates are calculated, network status is communicated, insurance is handled, and financial responsibility is explained to patients. Ultimately, I'm finding another dentist. If you have Delta Dental PPO, don't simply ask, "Do you accept my insurance?" Ask, "Are you IN-NETWORK with my exact plan, and was my estimate calculated using that network status?" Get your estimate in writing and verify it with your insurance company before treatment. Every patient may have a different experience, but this was mine. Healthcare should be about people first, not numbers and sales.

Concerned of potential damage to their permanent teeth that were starting to hit together in front, I got them in with Dr. Lucas. He was incredible. First, he knew when to start, which meant waiting a year to not start too early. Then, when the time was right, he put them both in an expander, top braces across the front, and a reverse headgear. Sounded intimidating at first, but my kids were so resilient and pros in no time. In less than 6 months, both kids' bites were corrected and no longer hitting. They're on track to get their braces off soon! So grateful to Dr. Lucas and the team for their expertise, friendliness and patience to 2 young boys, and saving those permanent teeth from getting damaged.
