Last time I was here was over thirty years ago when I came on a school bus with a bunch of other brats. It is definitely worth the $12 entrance fee. I think native Texans interested and knowledgeable about our region's history in all its nuance will really appreciate what they will find here. It's nod to modern day political correctness is accompanied by a wink to inveterate bias, reminding watchers that people of the Pecos were humans "just like us" (in case there is any doubt). read more

A fun little museum that showcased Texas and its wildlife and history of its inhabitants. A great spot for kids and lots of interactive sections. Alot of hidden exhibits I almost missed. First of all, Yay for the Witte for offering free entry on Tuesday evenings. This is what drew our family in. We are on a budget but still wanted to try something new. The line to get in was long but the staff worked through it quickly and with enthusiasm. We met up with another group, altogether we had 4 children between the age of 2 & 7. They all had a great time. The cute little thunderstorm in the first floor exhibit caught me off guard but was a nice touch. There's a cute snack shop and lots of open lawn area for the kids to stretch their legs. My personal fav was the garden leading up to the tree house. It had cute little interactive water features for the kids to play with. We spent nearly 4 hours there but it didn't even feel like it. There's lots to see and lots to learn, for all ages. read more

First off admission here is 8 dollars for adults, there are no student discounts =( I was hesistant on the fee since it was a bit high for a museum but I was already here and had heard good things about this place. Once you enter the first floor has 2 dinosaurs, some western paintings, and a bunch of weak exhibits of Texas wildlife. The 2nd floor was also not much to talk about as far as exhibits went. The exhibits upstairs included pottery of san antonio, ancient fossils, mummies, photographs of the west again. Then why do you ask 4 stars? The HEB Science Treehouse!!! This place rocks for kids and adults!!! I had so much fun playing with all of the stuff. They even had an interactive game pad. I'm 25 and I felt like a kid again!!! read more

Ok, three stars. Kind a rough review. Let's talk about parking and how accessible it is? Doe they have it? Yes. Clearly marked? No. Surrounded by pay to park? Yes. This is my big bone to pick. It's not their fault, but it does affect the overall experience. It's a natural history museum, so it's not gonna blow your mind. It has some cool skeletons of dinosaurs but You run out of stuff to do quickly. I've even been here fir a wedding reception, it's nice. But I personally don't want to celebrate anything here. read more

My first experience at the Witte was great. Lacy and Jonathan were so accommodating with planning a field trip with my organization. There are plenty parking spots available.There are many places to see inside the museum, as well as outside. The museum is clean, the staff is friendly and the interior of the museum is beautifully done. They currently have their Survivor Exhibit going on which is pretty cool. They have snakes, spiders, fish, animal skulls and so much more on display. I recommend checking out the Texas Wild Gallery and H-E-B Body Adventure. My favorite parts were the SkyCycle (where you are on a stationary bike on a rope in the air), the treehouse and the machine that converts your coins to a bronze specialized witte museum coin. We had a great time and I will definitely have to come back. read more

Great place to let the littles explore and learn! We went on Tuesday and it was free! How awesome! We did do a donation, because we just thought it was wonderful of them to do such a great thing for many. There are very many exhibits to look at and it kept our kids very engaged. From ages 11-6. They had a lot of questions and smiles as we walked around and explored together. The H-E-B body adventure is great, but was very packed. It's probably best to come when it's not free, so your kiddos can get the full experience. We were unable to do that, due to the amount of children there. So I'm assuming it might work out if it's on a day that's not as busy? I'm not sure if it's packed like that all the time. Our kids were able to look around for about two hours and got hungry. So we had to leave. They do have a small shop with waters and snacks available to purchase. The only thing we didn't get to see was the Kittie West Nelson Ferguson People of the Pecos Gallery. We would love to visit again, and it was a fun trip for the whole family. Thank you, for gifting many with the opportunity to build memories, all while learning. Finally made it , they had a special about space travel, the kids enjoyed the interaction. Smaller kids were able discover dino bones. Also alot of interesting history displays. Picture with a cowboy, and sit on a cowboy saddle. HEB tree house was nice , and plenty of hands on for kids . Overall nice experience and and kids enjoyed themselves. read more

Wow... I'm not even sure what to say. There was nothing spectacular about this museum, and I'm not sure I found anything mildly educational. Even my seven year old nephew was disappointed (my major determining factor in giving 2 stars). We paid the extra $3 for him to see the Amazon Voyage exhibit and he didn't really enjoy it. It'd be nice if they renovated or had more interactive exhibits. The treehouse outside is nice, but it fills up quickly and I haven't seen many patient kids willing to wait in line. They offer free admission on Tuesdays after 3:00 so check it out then if you must, that way if you don't enjoy it then you don't feel ripped off. During that time parking can be difficult to find so show up before three if you can. This is probably one of the most unappealing museums I've ever been to. However maybe younger kids will get some enjoyment out of a visit here. read more

Very awesome museum! On Tuesdays from 3pm to close it's free! Very nice exhibits. They also have some exhibits that you can pay for. I thought they had a lot of great free exhibits to see and a lot of hands on for the kiddos. The body exhibit was really fun and my 3 year old loved it. A lot of hands on things to do. They also have animals from all around Texas which is really awesome. Traffic getting in was a little rough but expected since admission was free. Beautiful done and well worth going. read more

I visited the Witte recently when I was in San Antonio for Christmas with my bf & his family. We drove past one morning & noticed the large signs in the front advertising their "mythical creatures" exhibit & just knew we had to see it. I enjoyed that this museum is more than just a museum too....it has fairly large grounds right along the river with tons of seating. We spent a fair bit of time walking outside, enjoying the fresh air & cooler temperatures (the last time I visited SA was in mid August & it was MISERABLE lol). The dinosaur skeletons & mythological exhibits were easily my favorites but I did also enjoy the Texan history. read more

We stumbled upon this place after leaving the zoo and I'm glad we did. It was fairly priced at 40.00 for three adults. The staff was friendly, very knowledgeable about the museum, and were strictly implementing their new rules to help with COVID. When we went, there was barely anyone in there so we got the entire place to ourselves for the most part. If you're new to Texas, I think this would be a great place for you to come and learn some history. They have multiple sections including animals native to Texas, dinosaurs, Texas history, cowboys, an H‑E‑B interactive health experience, a few critters, and an outdoor tree house you can climb. I would say though that I don't really think this museum is kid friendly, I can see it being kinda boring for a kid, especially if they need action and constant entertainment. If you're in the area though, I'm sure the guys at the Witte museum would love to have you. Very welcoming place. read more

While the kids are on break for school we are always looking for fun and expensive...and dare I say FREE things to do! The Witte Museum offers free entrance on Tuesdays from 3- 8 pm. We got there around 4:30 and the crowd was not bad at all. We were easily able to find parking in the structure. There was a short line to enter and before you were able to do so you just had to check in with the nice staff at the front desk. My 5 year old twins noticed all of the dinosaur exhibits as soon as we entered and were amazed! Off to the left side there are other displays of animals found in Texas which was really neat as well. There are a couple of other buildings all with fun activities for kids. I really liked the one with all of the exercising activities. One con was that there were only 2 bathrooms near the entrance. Since there were many people there that night there was a pretty long line to use the restroom which is not fun with little ones. read more

The Witte is now one of my favorite museums, my wife and I looked at just about everything they had to offer and I managed to take a picture of most of it. They have a lot of things for kids, a tree house, and a climbing wall were just a few of them (recommend wearing tennis shoes for the kiddos)....dinosaur fossils, math exhibits, lots of interactive displays, western things like a stage coach, looking through all the photos and reviews posted on Yelp by myself and other yelp junkies will give the idea to plan your next visit. They have some awesome paintings and sculptures on display. They have new stuff/exhibits all the time, check their website, last month was a dinosaur thing and next week they have an exhibit on Japan....I want to see that. read more

Made a trip to the museum today with the little guy. We have a membership card that is expiring at the end of the month. This is our third trip in s year. There really isn't much new besides the featured exhibit that costs extra. And it is not an exhibit a 5 yr old would be interested in. You can only look at dinosaur bones for so long. The Witte is a San Antonio mainstay but after the excitement over the new building wore off, it's not much to see on a frequent basis. I don't think I'll renew my membership. Maybe just a visit once a year instead. read more

It's grown so much from be last time we brought the kids here (they were MUCH YOUNGER), but the content is still exceptional and the exhibits are so well done :) The Witte is a treasure and in its new space it never feels crowded. The Witte Museum is an enormous complex dedicated to Texas state history. I frankly did not anticipate the breadth of the museum when we arrived (it spans over several buildings). There are plenty of natural history exhibits with several animals native to Texas. There were a few live creatures as well: tortoise, scorpions, frogs, eels, etc. There apparently is a dinosaur exhibit starting in May they were advertising, bummed to be missing that. But, they had a few skeletons, some fossils, and additional information about dinosaurs as regular exhibits. There was a great deal of old west artifacts and information. While we were visiting they had a special exhibit about the 300th anniversary of the founding of San Antonio. I can see how this museum is not the best for children. There were several field trips with elementary school age kids while we were visiting and if the exhibit did not have anything to do with animals I noticed the kids seemed to check out. We had lunch plans so we were not able to see the entire thing, but a look around the grounds demonstrates how expansive the Witte is. The exhibits were clean and the employees were friendly. There are restrooms on every floor and the facility appeared to be completely accessible to wheelchairs, or at least the parts I visited. I would definitely return to see what I missed the first time around. Recommended. read more

This museum is a gem! We have reciprocal benefits through ASTC and the entrance was free. This museum far outweighs the Fernbank in Atlanta and in many ways the Perot museum in Dallas. There are rooms full of history, rooms with videos, hands-on labs and a room with the sounds of the animals native to Texas, with actual stuffed animals lit up while George Strait tells us all about them. It was an immersive and incredible experience. The display of the Pecos and their art and lifestyle was beautiful. Best of all, this museum was not crowded, and the outdoor area behind the museum is gorgeous. In good weather, one could spend hours outside and hours inside. Our three-year-old was enraptured, and though he has a short attention span, he was fixated on everything in the museum. In my opinion, it is the best museum of its kind. read more

Great museum with lots of interactive and history for kids. They have a special exhibit every year, although you do have to pay extra to visit. I like how there's different buildings on site that offer a variety of education programs such as fossils, Texas history and a playground area. It gets crowded so I'd recommend coming after breakfast for an early visit or weekday. A good size museum that is mostly in door and perfect for all ages. read more

What a dumpster fire. the old Witte has been replaced by a Disney-like shallow kid ride. A huge new main hall with 5 tiny dislay windows with a dozen artifacts the size of your fore arm embedded in a fake strata 40 x 20 wall. Backed up by a half dozen dinosaur skeletons. Fake dinosaur skeletons. Resin and plastic T Rex's and some fake ocean critters. why? I guess because kids like dinosaurs and if you dont have any it's cheaper to put up fake ones. Upstairs? A bunch of "learning labs" for the kids. a sandbox where they can learn land stewardship. A tortoise in an aquarium where they can learn about animals (is this a petting zoo?). How about actual historical artifacts that illustrate the natural history of the area? What a radical concept. Not in evidence here. it used to be. But not anymore. Glossily packaged trivialities - did I mention the toy gallery? - yep. a gallery with Slinklys, GI Joes and random toys from the past 4 or 5 decades. Give me a f'ing break. A little on the sexist part.. lots about the men and how they settled Texas.. nothing honest about the Alamo and big on bragging about oil and cattle, the two main footprints related to climate change. You have to go to the NEW Witte Museum! Last time I went to Witte museum was probably about 9 years ago, and I honestly did not remember anything remarkable. My husband and I decided to visit after the renovation with addition of dinosaur display. By the entrance, they have a big dinosaur displayed and it was just exciting and entertaining! They have a touch panel that plays some educational videos and information about the dinosaur in each section. Videos aren't one of those boring ones, actually very interesting. Besides dinosaurs, they have nice animal displays, some arts, history of our regions and some seasonal exhibits.Also they have kids play area and that even looked fun to me!lol They did such a great job with their renovation. I would recommend Witte Museum to anyone! read more

Not a fan. We visited while vacationing in San Antonio. We expected some genuine dinosaur bones, but the displays were all just replicas. The only real bones are fragments in pull-out drawers. The rest of the museum was mildly interesting. Cannot recommend, unless you are looking for an air conditioned building to wander around in for a while. read more

When my family first moved to San Antonio about nine years ago, we visited the Witte and were horribly disappointed, comparing it to all the big museums we'd been to. We went again a few days ago (nine years later) and I will say, they've done tons of improvements! There is a lot of rich Texas history, quite a bit of interactive/hands on kids stuff (fun and educational) and I like that they offer indoor and outdoor exhibits. There is still A LOT of construction going on and we were told they are adding even more exhibits. Some were even closed. San Antonio is growing by leaps and bounds and I give The Witte kudos for constantly making improvements and trying to keep up. Also, the employees were all very friendly. read more

Alright so I've visited the Witte several times throughout my life... leave S.A., come back to S.A., go to the Witte... leave S.A. again, come back to S.A., go to the Witte. I'd say that the Witte is a vast improvement compared to what it was years ago - especially with the treehouse available for the kiddos - but I'm having such a hard time liking what they have to offer. I had high hopes for the exhibitions they've carried and through word-of-mouth, have only found a handful that many people have really liked. As for myself, I'm not so sure. The last time I went here it was for a team building day for my job and during our lunch, a few of us ventured into the Amazon exhibit. Uh... not impressed. Some of the hands-on exhibits were incomplete or not exciting and one of the guys in my group wanted to get his money back (yes, it was only 3 bucks - we had an entrance special because of our event where we didn't have to buy the main ticket plus the special exhibit ticket - but hey, that's a gallon of gas these days). Absolutely loved this museum. If San Antonio is in you travel plans, leave time for this museum of history, science and culture. Dinosaur skeletons, Indigenous peoples, minerals, kids' discovery activities, and more in a beautiful modern building. Attached by walkway to Texas trail drivers museum building. Interesting tableaus and interactive frontier- type 'buildings' and animated exhibits. Great for adults and kids. And, you can leave fir lunch and come back in to finish the day. Its the first full week of summer break for my boys; and we finally went to the Witte Museum. When I first saw the long line to pay I thought to myself that this place is going to be so crowded we're not going to be able to see anything here. To my surprise Witte Museum is much bigger than it looks from Broadway. I thought it was well worth the $8 plus $3 surcharge for the Dinosaur exhibit. I like how the special exhibits are right up front; kinda like getting the best things first. Dinosaur Unearth was a really cool, hands exhibit featuring fossils, and almost true to life robotic dinosaurs that can be control with a push of button. My kids really liked it; I ran into a few dinos that were giving me that evil eye too. I thought the Texas Eco exhibit was alright and informative. I also learned a lot about the Edwards Aquifer, and some blind catfish that live deep in it. The Science Treehouse was a real treat for kids and I. Playing and tinkering with the different stations from controlling helicopter props, to using pulleys to pull yourself, and shooting a tennis ball up in the air. We spent almost 3 hours in the Witte Museum, and I think we missed a couple of spots. If you buy the Entertainment Book there's a BOGO coupon and online coupons too that really make it worth it. I also saw that a household family can buy a museum membership for $65 a year which includes unlimited general admission to Witte and over 270 more museums. I think I may get that one very soon. Overall I give the Witte Museum 5 stars, and plan to return quite often. read more

The Witte and I have had a complex relationship dating back to when I was in elementary school. In the beginning, everything was shiny and new. Oh look, dino bones and a g*ddamn mummy! Then, the HEB tree house opened and I promptly lost my adolescent sh*t. Interactive stuff! Fast-forward about 20 years from my first Witte visit and I can't muster enough excitement to make it past the featured exhibit. Everything, including the mummy, seems dustier and the HEB tree house is in sad shape (but it looks like they were doing some construction on it). Sure, you can chalk it up to the cynicism that developed in my mid-teens, but I don't look forward to wandering around the Witte anymore. It's the same stuff that's been there for decades. The featured exhibits is where it's (normally) at when it comes to the Witte. Most recently, the Alien & Androids exhibit. While some of the interactive stuff was broken, the videos offered really interesting info. My favorite part was the meteorite room, so cool being able to see and touch something that was in deep space! read more

I am new to San Antonio, so I have been creating a list of places to visit, and the Witte was on the top of that list. The space was so much fun and engaging. For educators, variability is through the roof with videos, hands on learning opportunities, audio recordings, outside recreational trails and activities, etc. If you are visiting from out of state or are from the area, definitely check out the Witte. Tuesday's after 3:00 are free for anyone and with the summer heat, I recommend going later in the afternoon/early evening especially if you want to go outside.
