Free tote bag making Small Business Saturday craft event at WNY Book Arts! :-)
    Tara K.

We've been to WNY Book Arts Center for various events a few times. Every time we visit, we wonder why we don't visit more often! It's a darling space with a gallery, a functioning artist's print shop in the basement, and a gift store. The majority of art and gift items for sale are by local artists. We stopped by this weekend for a #SmallBusinessSaturday event to make free tote bags. My teen daughter had a great time screen printing her tote bag. The artist who helped her make her bag did a wonderful job explaining the whole soup-to-nuts screen printing process. We did a little shopping while there too: grabbed a couple handmade holiday cards, a seed bomb Christmas gift for my dad (it's made of upcycled folder from the Buffalo Mayor's office, very cool!), and a tee-shirt for my daughter with a cute cat design by a local artist. The staff here is always so very helpful and kind, many of them print artists themselves. There is a paid parking lot right across the street, which is handy but pricey. We paid $7.50 to park there last weekend. The parking investment is even more reason to take your time enjoying WNY Book Arts Center, especially if they have an event going, and make an afternoon out of it downtown. Casa di PIzza is right nextdoor (BEST deep-dish pizza in the city), and there are some other shops starting to open up on Ellicott Street near Chippewa and in Market Arcade, all walking distance. Check on WNY Book Arts's Facebook page for upcoming events info, and head on down! :-D

WNYBAC is Buffalo's premier print shop and art gallery! Stop by to tour the Gallery and Boutique, full of dozens handmade cards, prints, posters, and book-making supplies. Take a tour of the studio and see just how letterpress printing is done.

This is a great place. Very unique. I've now been to two different events here and it's been so much fun. It's a great space for mingling and all the artwork and prints are great conversation pieces. Getting to try out some printing presses and shop for unique gifts is always a plus. They also hold workshops which I am looking forward to attending eventually. Overall, a must visit in downtown Buffalo.

A true gem in WNY. Screen printing, printing press, custom posters and greeting cards, and all sorts of unique treasures. I've been meaning to attend a class here but so far I've only been to events. The most recent was this year's edible books festival. It's a festival that is celebrated nationwide around April 1st. I went a couple years ago, and I was honestly more impressed at that event then this year's event. There were more competitors then, and also conveniently placed chairs/stools to sit on. Much of the festival involves perusing the entries and small pop ups of coffee shops and local goods, but after a while, when you're waiting for the judging to come to a decision, you might want to sit a bit. While there are things to do, like try your hand at screenprinting a t shirt or using a printing press to make a commemorative poster, it isn't enough to fill the time between judging and trying the goods. However, I am always impressed with the creativity and knack for artistic puns presented by the youth and adults alike.

I've started to frequent WNYBAC a lot more in the past year so I recently became a member when I spotted the Groupon deal.

Side note, it's run & owned by ALL WOMEN! Huge bonus. Everything was provided, and there are so many choices. Most projects range in price from $30-40. We were working on plaques. We sanded, painted/stained, dried, applied an adhesive stencil, picked out colors, painted again, dried again then eagerly lifted the stencil for a finished project. I was impressed how well mine turned out, just like ones you see at a craft show. Parking.... I heard one of the owners say the have a 12 spot lot for free. I found street parking, across the street. During COVID-19, StudioHue is offering a scaled back version of what crafts they offer, and is making home deliveries (within a 15 mile radius of their location on Broadway in the City of Buffalo) to provide you with some creativity during this time of staying home. The craft kits include everything you need. I went with the dog string art. I received the piece of wood, which had a hanging apparatus attached to it, a sponge paint brush, some paint, the color I chose, nails, and four things of embroidery floss, or the 3 colors that I chose when I ordered the product. This specific kit was $30 and was delivered to me on a Sunday morning. When I received the product Sunday morning, I also got a text message signaling to me that the delivery had been made. I painted the wooden board for my project in about 5 minutes, and let that dry. I then crafted the project in about 2 hours time five days after receiving the project, and the paint was still good to go. I highly recommend them to keep you sane and provide a little creative outlet.

Seriously, located in the old Pierce Arrow Building (which houses many many things, BTW), on Great Arrow and Elmwood (across from Carriage Trade Pastries), is a ceramics studio. You can take classes here, which are small and offer personalized service. You will learn a lot in the six week beginner class. You will learn how to "throw clay", make a bowl or perhaps a mug, glaze it and actually use it! How cool is that? Already know how to throw a bowl? You can also join here and come as often as you like. Its a monthly membership I think, and you pay for firing of course. Clay is priced reasonably, the space is nice, all the tools are there. All thats missing is you.

You didn't even visit the center or have any experience with the staff or the facilities yet you're leaving a one star review because you couldn't manage to have the problem-solving skills to contact the owners. I know for a fact that the guys at Buffalo Clay art are not hard to reach. in fact one time I contacted them a few days before Christmas because I wanted some suggestions on which kind of pottery wheel to buy and they got back to me right away. I was shocked at such a quick response time on the most hectic day of the Christmas season . They had nothing to gain no funds to earn from answering my question. Again they are not hard to reach but some part of me is glad that Cherie wasn't able to reach them because she sounds like an ass. I guess that's how you become yelp elite by posting comments for businesses you don't have any real experience with. In terms of my experience with the actual business, because I've taken at least two classes there and several members of my friends and family have taken classes there I can say that buffalo clay art center is a wonderful place to learn about pottery the people that teach the classes are experts they truly love what they do and they are amazing at it I cannot suggest a better place to learn from!! Chill vibe place.

I came across the brunch even online via Facebook. Right away I followed the link and purchased my ticket for a Sunday event. It was quick and easy. The day of the event I arrived a few minutes late but it was no big deal. Finding the venue was a little tricky. It's of those things where if you blink, you'll miss the entrance. It only took a few moments to figure it out. Once inside it was small but cozy. There were 18 people attending the brunch and we started right away. I really enjoyed the class. We were given cute glasses with a buffalo on them and the mimosas were served. Brunch was comprised of bagels, coffee cake and scones from Panera. It was a nice spread and we were welcome to help ourselves to the spread of food. Our instructor Mo, was very nice and bubbly. She was extremely patient and kind. She never hesitated to repeat a step even if it was for the 27th time. She came right over and showed everyone over and over. She made learning fun and easy. I would love to take another class with her for sure. She's a great teacher. The space was a little tight for the blankets were were making but I really enjoyed chatting with the other people and getting to know them. I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for more events.
