Great shop, I have attended the Toast To Type Event here the last couple years and it's so much fun.Its an evening of hands on printing demos, food and drink plus raffles on baskets, wine and wreaths.You get to handprint your own punny reusable tote bag and clink commemorative coasters.Its such a fun event. I also attended the posters for the irish classical theatre a Retrospective, which was cool to see all the posters of the past, especially the plays i have attended. The staff is friendly and you can purchase prints, posters, post cards and jewelry from local artists. read more

I have been going to the Toast to Type Event here the last few years and I must say it's a blast for a good cause.You can screen print a tote bag and coaster, which is so fascinating. You get food and drink included in your ticket price and they have raffles for baskets wine and wreaths. The shop is cool and the staff so nice, you can purchase posters, prints, stationary, jewelry and screenprints.I also had the chance to catch the posters for the Irish Classical theatre company Retrospective. Love shopping here for cards that are locally made! I've had a few occasions recently were I wanted a special card. I stopped into WNY Book Arts Center on my lunch break and found exactly what I needed! I love being able to support a local store and local artisans. Cards are something that I usually skimp on cost with - who wants to pay $8 for a card from Walmart!? However, I am willing to pay a little more for something hand-crafted. These locally made cards really add to a gift. They aren't something the recipient is likely to toss out right after receiving it. The cost truly isn't bad either! For $5 of $6 you get a beautiful card that is really worth the cost. The store s a lot of fun to explore with lots of items beyond cards. The staff is friendly and there to help. I've never attended one of their classes but look forward to doing so in the future! read more

What a cool place! I purchased a fun print and will be hopefully taking a class soon to make a handmade journal. While there I got to make a festive coaster for free! I love how this art is being maintained in the heart of Buffalo. Be sure to stop by if you're new to the area or visiting. Lots of Buffalo themed gifts to be had. We attended the annual Edible Book Fest and had a great time. What a cool event. All these local non professional bakers made the most amazing entries of their favorite books. So interesting to see their creativity. Not to mention you get to taste all of them after the judging takes place! Lot's of things to see and do while waiting for the judges as well as a gift basket auction. Looking forward to next year. read more

We've been to WNY Book Arts Center for various events a few times. Every time we visit, we wonder why we don't visit more often! It's a darling space with a gallery, a functioning artist's print shop in the basement, and a gift store. The majority of art and gift items for sale are by local artists. We stopped by this weekend for a #SmallBusinessSaturday event to make free tote bags. My teen daughter had a great time screen printing her tote bag. The artist who helped her make her bag did a wonderful job explaining the whole soup-to-nuts screen printing process. We did a little shopping while there too: grabbed a couple handmade holiday cards, a seed bomb Christmas gift for my dad (it's made of upcycled folder from the Buffalo Mayor's office, very cool!), and a tee-shirt for my daughter with a cute cat design by a local artist. The staff here is always so very helpful and kind, many of them print artists themselves. There is a paid parking lot right across the street, which is handy but pricey. We paid $7.50 to park there last weekend. The parking investment is even more reason to take your time enjoying WNY Book Arts Center, especially if they have an event going, and make an afternoon out of it downtown. Casa di PIzza is right nextdoor (BEST deep-dish pizza in the city), and there are some other shops starting to open up on Ellicott Street near Chippewa and in Market Arcade, all walking distance. Ive been here a few times. Most recently as a volunteer one weekend. They do a lot of interesting things. The event I volunteered for is their annual BookFest event, and there were all sorts of tables set up with different tasks and crafts being done. There were kids and adults both engaged with the employees. This event was open and welcoming. This place is a little hard o describe, they do all sorts of things, and can even host an event for you. But its well worth a visit if you are downtown, something to keep in mind for when you "need the perfect card", or an idea for something. read more

I tried expressing my love for this store in a haiku, but I realized I'm out of practice in writing these things. It didn't turn out as witty or crafty as I had hoped, so I have to preface it with this disclaimer: Haiku for the WNY Book Arts:: Buffalo Love FOUND: Posters, crafts, workshops: I cry when I'm not present. ....and perhaps tell you in non-haiku form that this place is GREAT! They do different workshops, events and have great unique posters and Buffalo memorabilia. From posters that express your love for the Lloyd Taco Truck to Burchfield prints of the Electric Tower (which I bought for my room for a cool $10)! Just grab a frame at Marshalls and BAM your room is beautiful and it looks like you have $100+ piece of artwork. Can't wait to come back for some of the events they do here! read more

Walked by this place a bunch of times and never knew what it was. And then I heard about BookFest, where I got to see not only the store and a bunch of local artists/craftsmen selling their goods, but also learn about the membership where you can use their basement studio space which contains an infinite amount of craft supplies. :) Anyway, since BookFest (which I won't review here because I did so many fun things it would take away from this review), I went back again on a mission for Thank You cards. They offer a great selection of handmade cards, ranging from most themes including Buffalo-themed cards. One thing all the cards have in common though- creativity. Come here if you're looking for something unique, funny, or just to support local. I hope to see their selection grow even more! Note: I came in looking for a pack of professional looking Thank You cards for work, which they didn't have (the only pack was of casual Thank You notes) so I ended up getting a cute blank card that I will use to surprise my boo. read more

My prior review definitely needs an update. I've started to frequent WNYBAC a lot more in the past year so I recently became a member when I spotted the Groupon deal. This is a great place for those who like to do and those who like to give. This is a multipurpose kind of place. I used to think it was just a gift shop, but it's so much more. Yes, their gift shop has journals, notebooks, buttons, book making kits, greeting cards, books about book arts, book themed jewelry, posters, and more. It is a good place to grab a unique gift for someone. If you like to work with your hands and create things I recommend taking a class. They have classes on screen printing, book binding, paper marbling, letterpress, and more. They even host classes for kids and professional development for groups. I planned a professional development for my staff which included learning letterpress basics and bookmarking. We made matching notebooks for the staff to have and it was a hit. I don't know much about their space rental but I have attended private events at WNYBAC. WNYBAC also has a ton of events including art exhibitions, festivals, and special sales. They do a good job of keeping an active calendar on their website and on Facebook. The staff is wonderful and I recommend asking them questions; they are patient, kind, and knowledgeable. This place is just amazing. I've been volunteering here since October 2014, and it gets better each day. Tons of wonderful workshops and classes that anyone can participate in. Truly a community gem! WNYBAC is one of 10 community access printing press workshops in the nation! That's right folks she's right here in Buffalo! There are three large vintage presses and a table top press in the basement workshop. A screen printing workshop was recently added as well. I've taken two workshops here, Letterpress I and II and learned a lot from the resident expert Chris Fritton. Seriously though, if a klutz like me can do it than there's even more hope for you. The worst thing that happened to me was I put in the letter type backwards onto the template plate - No limb or ego was lost in the process. Once you complete the basic Letterpress workshops you can sign up for the open studio sessions to make more letterpress items. This is highly subsidized, most places would charge $50-100 an hour for use of their Letterpress machine. Open Studio is $35 for 5 hours! The gallery upstairs has a revolving showcase of local artists and poets and small printer products. The gift shop is small but well appointed. WNYBAC also hosts events, speakers, and poetry nights. The schedule varies but is up-to-date on their website. Big Night is a big gathering. read more

This place is so cool. I almost don't feel cool enough to shop here sometimes. A really beautiful space and its location downtown makes it a special destination. I am not a letterpresser or book maker, but I can totally appreciate this impressive art! I love the cards that they have, they're super cute. I need to find a reason to give someone the "Buffalo Hates You Too!" card because it makes me smile. Anytime I want to find a unique gift for any of my friends I always stop here to peek at the posters, cards and other trinkets. A really neat place. read more

In addition to being a terrific gallery space and gift shop, WNY Book Arts Center offers some of the best classes I've ever taken in Buffalo. If you're interested in any of the print arts, I would strong recommend exploring this as an option for expanding your skills. I had such a great experience learning screen printing there--and, subsequently, with using their open studio hours to create t-shirts and posters for my husband's band. The staff has always been extremely helpful and supportive. Just working alongside such talented folks and seeing the products they are creating is truly inspirational. read more

WNYBAC is such an amazing place. Downstairs, in the print shop, it is like walking into a magical place. I was there for a Yelp event. We got to make our own holiday cards. It was so neat getting to use the press ourselves to produce the card. I can't wait to send it off! (Or I'll probably keep it, and frame it, and show it off.) The staff are extremely friendly. This is a great place. Very unique. I've now been to two different events here and it's been so much fun. It's a great space for mingling and all the artwork and prints are great conversation pieces. Getting to try out some printing presses and shop for unique gifts is always a plus. They also hold workshops which I am looking forward to attending eventually. A true gem in WNY. Screen printing, printing press, custom posters and greeting cards, and all sorts of unique treasures. I've been meaning to attend a class here but so far I've only been to events. The most recent was this year's edible books festival. It's a festival that is celebrated nationwide around April 1st. I went a couple years ago, and I was honestly more impressed at that event then this year's event. There were more competitors then, and also conveniently placed chairs/stools to sit on. Much of the festival involves perusing the entries and small pop ups of coffee shops and local goods, but after a while, when you're waiting for the judging to come to a decision, you might want to sit a bit. While there are things to do, like try your hand at screenprinting a t shirt or using a printing press to make a commemorative poster, it isn't enough to fill the time between judging and trying the goods. However, I am always impressed with the creativity and knack for artistic puns presented by the youth and adults alike. read more

This place is amazing- all of the programs they offer, classes and workshops, as well as art openings and readings. They do the Edible Book Contest every year (I always participate!) and that is amazingly great fun! They always have an art show on display and have an opening to go with it. Their letter press in the basement is authentic and no one else does anything like it. Their shop is full of great prints and cards- I own so many posters from this place, I lost count. They used to host something called Big Night which was a great evening full of poetry reading and food. Their annual craft fairs around Christmas as other holidays are always a treat- they curate the best vendors, and I love everything they offer. Definitely check out their classes, events, readings, openings, etc- everything they do is great, and open to everyone. A real place for the community to gather and grow. read more

My husband booked (bad pun, sorry not sorry) is a book binding class here. It was a blast. Got to meet really cool people from all different walks of life. The class was really interesting. The instructor was patient and helpful. And at the end of the class we had our own handmade books to take home. Definitely a cool way to spend a Saturday.
