I highly advise avoiding this CPA. I had a very costly, negative experience…read more Due to a medical issue I had multiple years of back taxes to file, so I was in a hurry to get them in. I called Lawrence based on the positive yelp reviews, explained the situation, my income sources and the constraints to get them filed quickly to avoid issues. When I spoke on the phone before meeting in person, he quoted me a very competitive rate but left it open because he had to look at my actual filing (understandable). Once I arrived onsite, he presented a retainer with a much higher price per year that included a large variable range of potential cost per year. (Ex. Filing cost will equal $x - $2.5x per year depending on the work completed.) Because I had no other options, (admittedly this was my fault) I signed the retainer under the assurance that the "Should be easy to file". The process for filing and communicating information was via a series of back and forth emails that was time consuming and unorganized. Other tax preparers I have used sent organizers, not to mention the securing transfer of the files through a website, etc. to not have them exposed as attachments in email. The drawn-out process resulted in action being taken and when I reached out to Lawrence for help, he said he would be happy to call them on my behalf. This sounded like the best course of action because he claimed to have inner working knowledge of the IRS from experience. The result of his calls however came to a very unfavorable resolution because according to him the agent "wouldn't budge". I took his word on this, however after a couple months, out of desperation, I decided to call them myself to attempt to get a better resolution. I was able to quickly get a much better resolution with very little effort. This could just be chalked up to chance of me getting a nicer agent, however the two issues I have were 1) he discouraged me from trying to call them myself and 2) (Something he didn't communicate prior to calling them) he billed me much more for this additional time. After a three of the years were completed, I went to pick them up at his office. He presented me with an un-itemized bill. The bill was significantly higher than I had anticipated. He charged me the highest end of the range for each of the years (2.5x what I expected per year). When I asked him politely to explain why the bill was so high, he reacted very emotionally and said "You want me to take them back I will!" (Knowing they needed to be mailed off immediately). I explained that I wasn't implying the charges were wrong, I was just seeking an explanation for the charges. Because I was in a bind I decided to just pay it. I only had one more year to complete and then I could find a different CPA. The final year was again a long unorganized process and halfway through he sent me an email saying that he had identified something that involve more time to complete the filing and as a result the price would be 2x the original quoted cost (which was already high). This time I said I would not pay the additional amount because the costs kept changing, I just wanted him to get them completed quickly and could do an amended return later. His email response to this was again unprofessional but this time he decided to add a personal attack by saying "I did not total my car nor get behind on my tax filings."... (I"m not sure what the goal with this was, shame me into paying more? I came to him seeking help because I had gotten into a bind.) Needless to say, I decided to find a new cpa to complete the remaining year. I found a new CPA who handled the final year quickly, efficiently and for less than a 1/4th what Lawrence was attempting to charge me. I typically don't write negative reviews but felt compelled to in this case to warn people in my situation. I went based of the existing positive reviews and regret my decision.

I went to Louis for a few years, and at first he did seem to be doing a good job with my taxes. He…read morecould be blunt and impolite, and often responded in an aggravated manner when I had tax-related questions, or when I asked for an explanation regarding tax issues. I referred a friend to him who said he was so rude to her on the phone, she was angry at me for the referral. I never cared for his demeanor and felt it was unprofessional, but I tolerated it for a few years believing he was doing my taxes well. However, he began missing deadlines for my business taxes and I started having to pay penalties based on his errors. This was a big problem! I also had a very large tax bill one year that seemed incorrect. When questioned, he had no explanation. I was devastated. I had been doing everything he had advised up until that point. I was then referred to a C.P.A. (Louis is NOT a C.P.A.) who re-did a few years of the taxes Louis had done incorrectly. I received back payments for overpayment of taxes. My new accountant is whip smart, never misses a deadline, is always responsive and happy to explain any part of the process to me. I truly lament the times I had Louis do my taxes. The only good thing to come out of it is that I finally reached such a deep dissatisfaction with Louis and his services that I found someone else who is fantastic.

We used to get our taxes done at H&R Block and were never felt confident that our refund as much as it should have been and Louis helped to confirm that this was indeed the case. Getting your taxes done is always daunting, but Louis makes is a much simpler process with his mini organizer. This way, you don't have to come into his office with a million receipts and other things. You just total everything up before had and come in with those numbers and your W2s (and maybe a few other bits of paper, but this definitely simplifies the process). So long as we live in the greater LA area, Louis Rubenstein is our guy!!

I had a terrible experience with Byran Blatt Who is a CPA at SCHALLER & BLATT, INC in Sherman Oaks California and would not recommend his services to anyone. Despite paying him over $1100.00, he failed to deliver on his promises and refused to respond to my messages. For four long months, he kept telling me he would contact the IRS to get an update on my documents, but he never followed through. He never bothered to return my calls, emails and he rarely responded to my text messages. Whenever I tried to reach him, he always had some excuse or the other, claiming he was ill or attending a party to name a few. This kind of behavior is unacceptable for someone who claims to be a professional. If he had been upfront with me and said he was too busy to take on my case, I could have found someone else who would have been able to help me. Instead, he wasted my time and money, leaving me in a bind. I would advise anyone looking for an accountant to steer clear of SCHALLER & BLATT, INC in Sherman Oaks California.
