I came here for a birthday dinner. I would say the food is pretty good but not necessarily five stars. Some of the flavors were hit or miss. The place in a cute neighborhood with plenty of parking if you go during a weekday. The service was quick and pretty exceptional. Everybody was pretty attentive and the owner bringing out the dishes was amazing. She explained everything. I would highly recommend the corn soup, the focaccia, the polenta with mushrooms, and trying their selected wines. The other dishes were OK, but I feel like it was a little bit salty. I look forward to seeing what else they have in the coming months because their menu is I believe seasonal!
This is a small but very charming restaurant. The tables were very close to each other. We were a party of 4 and all really enjoyed our food and experience here. We ordered the potato chips, steak tartare, focaccia bread, cantabrian sea boquerones, yellowtail aquachile, Carne Adovada -braised pork shoulder, and New Mexican Albondigas. I enjoyed the cocktails too but unfortunately I forgot their names. LOL. The steak tartare, yellowtail, and New Mexican Albondigas were our favorites. I expected the carne adovada (pork shoulder) to be better but it was just ok. Not as flavorful as I expected. We were too full to try any dessert. But there's always next time. Great spot in Mission Hills. Highly recommend this place!
Beautifully located in a quaint little neighborhood not far from a wonderful outdoor area in the Presidio area. A little outdoor seating, a bar top area, and a comfortable indoor area that is very inviting, were a surprise as I approached the location. The food is elegant, is presented amazing, and tastes great. I started with the Sweet Corn and Piñon Soup. I see why it was voted best soup for two years in a row. The thinly sliced corn bread adds an amazing texture in those bites. I had the Apricot salad (sorry I did not note the name and the menu was updated so it is not in any of the pictures) was fresh, crisp, and refreshing. I finished the evening with a Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta with sugared dark cherry was very pleasing. I almost forgot the focaccia bread.. made daily, served warm and soft. A must have. The server had a couple of hiccups with an incorrect food order and totally separate billing issue (which by their reaction I would assume was an off night) but other food delivery staff and bussing staff were timely and professional. I would recommend reservations. I was able to secure a seat (due to showing for dinner around 4 pm or so), but the restaurant filled up nicely and hosted about 4 anniversary's and 1 birthday in my time there. Dress attire seemed casual but there is definitely a more elevated clientele so I would recommend a thoughtful outfit for the experience.
Cute little restaurant tucked away in the Mission Hills neighborhood. Dining al fresco is fine (if you don't mind the cars) but I prefer inside. Food was light and flavorful. My favorites the corn soup, brussel sprout salad, aguachile, and mushroom dish. I failed to take pics except for the soup. Come to catch up with a friend or a nice light meal.
I can see why this is one of the best restaurants in San Diego! It was delicious and I'm already excited to come back since the menu changes.
What a treat! SIL made reservations for 6pm on a Thursday a month before when we told her we would be visiting. She told us reservations at this time were hard to come by. We ordered so many things to share - focaccia bread, baguette (arrived warm - crusty outside and soft inside), potato chips (also arrived warm and there was a lot of it), Yellowtail Aguachile (light and citrusy), steak tartare (love), sweet corn and pinon soup (YUM - no wonder it's the Winner of Best Soup in SD), brussels sprout salad (simple but so good), Maize & Hen in the Woods, and the Lamb & Three Sisters (meat cooked perfectly medium and so tender). To top it all off, we ended our meals with the carrot cake and chocolate pot (that pinon brittle!). Each dish was beautifully presented - a feast for the eyes as they were so colorful. Service was great in that they offered recommendations and checked in on us often. It was also a beautiful day so the weather was perfect while we were seated outdoors. Great experience!
I had heard of Wolf in the Woods before, but never got around to trying it until my husband saw it on Resy as part of the Amex credit restaurants. We decided to give them a shot, and initially had a reservation but had to cancel last minute due to scheduling changes. We thought it'd be OK to do a walk-in if we arrived earlier in the day around 4:30pm, but turns out they were booked out the entire night! Luckily they suggested we grab a drink and wait, as there could always be a chance for us to get in. Good thing we did, as we got seated just 15 minutes later! - PARKING - Street parking, there's a row of spots right in front of the restaurant, but otherwise you'll have to park in the residential areas. - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - They have a few small tables lined up outside, and the interior is honestly not that big either. It made sense why it was booked out so easily - not only due to the popularity but the available seating. It's a very cozy vibe, and I wouldn't recommend coming with a party larger than 4. Every single person on the staff team were so friendly and welcoming, and definitely made our experience that much better. - FOOD - Octopus Special: This wasn't on their main menu, but we wanted to try it as we are big octopus fans! Really nice flavor, and although it had olives in it (I'm not an olive fan), I actually really enjoyed this dish! Smoked French Trout Roe ($38): The moment this was placed down I felt so fancy! I loved making each individual brioche bite, and the flavors all melded together so well! Savory, tangy, umami, all in one bite! Patatas Bravas: This is one of our favorite Tapas dishes, so whenever we see it, we automatically want to try it out! The patatas bravas here are more on the crispy baked potato side, rather than a crispy potato bite like we've had at other restaurants. This was mainly due to the larger pieces that were served. I actually very much enjoyed this - the sauces and seasonings they used were amazing! - OVERALL - I'm so glad we gave this spot a try, we will absolutely be back to try more of the menu!
Wolf in the Woods is fun, different. I love the interior design, from the tables to the lighting and minimalist vibes. The space is very intimate and perfect for date night. They have a decent wine list. Their menu is very unique with distinct flavors. I believe it's all served Tapas style. Some of my favorites are the harissa octopus. The presentation is beautiful and the yellowtail aguachile. I'm sure a number of the menu items have changed since I last visited in 2022. Their service moves on the slower but intentional side. Hopefully that makes sense. Wolf in the Woods is on the pricier side, I recommend trying it once and moving on. Unlikely a place to become a regular at.
It's only been a few weeks, but Wolf in the Woods may have been my favorite meal of 2026. The restaurant itself has a very pleasant neighborhood vibe, and plenty of patio seating. As for the food let's get into it: - Smoked French Trout Roe (9/10) Perfect start to the meal, they make the breaded crackers in house which pairs well with all the sides. - Sweet Corn & Piñon Soup (10/10) This won best soup in 24' & 25' and I can see exactly why. The sweetness and char from the corn had my taste buds dancing. Never have I ever had a soup this delicious. Must order!! - Seared Prime Beef Filet (8.5/10) The meat itself was seasoned perfectly. I'm also a huge fan of the shallots and soy sauce combination, gave it a good asian twist. - Carrot Cake (100/10) You can't leave without ordering this. This is by far the best carrot cake I've ever had. The pecans were so good, even by themselves. They also added caramel drizzle on the side, but honestly it didn't need it. Overall such a great experience. The hospitality here is top notch, and the food is just as amazing if not better. Would I go again? Absolutely!
Perfect spot to chat and catch up over light dishes and drinks! I loved the decor. It felt very warm and cozy. We made a reservation for a weekday evening and had no problem finding parking. The dishes are more like tapas style, and they were all super good. I loved the aguachile and octopus. The carne adovada was very warming and slightly sweet.
Love this restaurant. I love variety and unique dishes and this place has it all! Portions were perfect in my opinion but probably small for some but it is tapa style. Got trout roe and duck liver pate. Both were delicious and loved the bread they provided. It was slightly sweet and savory and super crunchy but not hard. Brussels sprout salad was delicious and I loved the corn soup. Anchovies were fresh and not fishy. I think the panna cotta was just alright tho, it tasted more like a jello/pudding. Service was great and love the interior design of the restaurant. We got seated right next to the balcony facing the mountain so it was a really nice dining experience.
Went here to celebrate our birthdays, and this place did not disappoint! The outdoor seating is the best I've seen so far. This spot is nestled in a residential area, so it's very quiet and less foot traffic, which is very appealing if you're looking for an intimate, quiet dinner. They also have ample outdoor heaters! Yay! The food was phenomenal! We had the jamòn iberíco, corn soup, and the lamb! I'm not a lamb person, but their lamb was IMPRESSIVE! It was tender, well seasoned, and bathed in a delicious glaze. The service was warm and very attentive. Overall, I was delightfully pleased and would absolutely go back to this spot!
Some of the dishes were so good that I didn't even get a chance to take photos at the beginning. The place is absolutely perfect intimate, warm, and with a real family feel. We sat outside under the heat lamp, which kept us perfectly warm. The food came out very quickly, the service was excellent, and the whole atmosphere felt calm and high-quality. Most of the dishes were simply outstanding. In terms of alcohol, they only offer beer and wine unfortunately that's the only downside. Parking was surprisingly easy with plenty of street spots available. A rustic countryside vibe right in the heart of San Diego. I will definitely, definitely be back.

Fantastic meal, wonderful service (from Tucker) and an adorable atmosphere- what else could you ask for! We were walk-ins, so seated at the bar but that was more than fine since we got to see all the actions as the dishes were being prepared. They recommend 4-6 dishes for 2 people. We got 5, and that felt right. We had the eggplant toast, corn soup, Brussels sprouts salad, yellowtail (our favorite) and the mushroom polenta. All delicious in their own way. Wow. Just wow. My best friend had been raving about Wolf in the Woods for years, so she brought me here for my birthday. As two serious foodies, our expectations were high. This place exceeded every one of them. Nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood, Wolf in the Woods feels like a hidden European café you'd stumble upon while traveling. Sitting outside beneath the umbrellas with a cocktail, watching the neighborhood stroll by. It felt like a little corner cafe in Paris. Then the food arrived. Every plate was beautifully presented, but the real magic was in the creativity of the flavors. The combinations were unexpected, yet every one worked. Every dish had me wondering how on earth someone came up with these pairings in the first place. The Sweet Corn & Piñon Soup deserves a standing ovation. We literally stopped talking after the first spoonful. Rich, savory, slightly sweet, comforting and completely unexpected all at the same time. Both of our eyes rolled back in our heads. The Beef Tataki completely surprised me. The outside had a delicate seared crust, the inside cut like butter, and the citrus pairing made me rethink what flavors belong together. And the mushroom and polenta dish? The mushrooms had an incredible texture--like savory little pieces of mushroom jerky. I would have happily bought a pound of them just to snack on. Every dish felt like it was taking me somewhere I'd never been before, yet somehow felt familiar at the same time. Wolf in the Woods creates an unforgettable experience. read more

I really wanted to like this place, but the experience fell short. Even with a reservation, we were seated in a corner near the bathroom while plenty of other tables were open, which wasn't the best start. I ordered the octopus, but was told it was already sold out. The beef tataki wasn't great either, it consisted of thick slices of beef soaked in soy based sauce which masked all the other components of the dish. On the plus side, the corn soup was tasty and the yellowtail aguachile was refreshing and all the ingredients worked together. The mini burgers were fine, though I asked for medium rare and they came out medium well. Overall, the food didn't quite live up to the price. It's located in a neighborhood with street parking and probably not the best spot for large groups. I'd say it's worth trying once, but I probably wouldn't go back read more

omg this place is so cute n romantic n it's tucked away in a lil neighborhood n just so cute n intimate. plenty of street parking btw aite so here's my ranking of the dishes we tried 1) Sweet Corn and Pinon Soup: voted best soup in SD! Literally would come here just for the soup. It's like drinking sweet corn bread in the best way imaginable with crunch from the pine nuts. The bowl was licked cleannnn 2) Yellowtail Aguachile: FATTY yellowtail and they're not cheap with their portion. Pairs so well with the creamy fresh avocado that's cut with the shallot and citrus. The flavors were just so good and refreshing here 3) The mini burger: DO YOU SEE THE JUICE! FATTY JUICY TENDER! I liked it by itself without any of the toppings and it didn't need the hatch chiles. 4) Jamon Iberico de Ballota: great jamon but wish it had more of the delicious tomato paste. The garlic aioli was sooo good and VERYY garliky. any more garlic and it would overpower the jamon. 5) Patatas Bravas: crispy and packed with lots of flavor, very filling. wish there was more sauce and garlic aioli honestly because it was sooo good 6) carrot cake: prob the MOIST-EST cake I've ever had like I did not see any crumbs LOL. Texture almost like a starbucks cake pop. I don't like caramel but their caramel wasn't too sweet and paired nicely with the cake. You could actually taste all the spices they used. I like it, but ended up being too sweet for me service was attentive and fast. you def need a reservation because there is limited seating read more

This was the best little spot! We went for a girls night and the food was next level! Highly recommend or a date night or cute girls night. Tucker was our server and he was great and recommended us delicious plates! We also got the chocolate cake and it was great! read more

I haven't been back in a few years and decided to come for my birthday this year. The whole experience was so amazing from beginning to end. The service really puts it over the top. We made reservations about a month ahead of time and we got seated right at our time. The restaurant is very cozy. Some might say crowded but we didn't mind. Right when I sat down, I was told happy birthday and given a little card that was signed by everyone. Throughout the night I was told happy birthday a couple times. The somm that stopped by, upon hearing it was my birthday also gave us a complimentary splash of a sparkling wine. For food we really wanted to try the octopus but they didn't have it :( so instead we ordered the yellowtail aguachile. Also ordered the corn soup, brussel sprouts salad and the carne adovada. The corn soup really was the star as others have mentioned. A little sweet but massive corn flavor and I liked the corn fritters for textural contrast. The brussel sprouts salad was light but still had a lot of flavor with the curry. The adovada was really rich in flavor. We did think something besides the fry bread to soak up more of the sauce would have been nice since it's a fried dough that becomes cracker like. The yellowtail, while tasty, was probably the most mid thing we had. read more
On our final evening in San Diego, attending a conference, we found "Wolf in the Woods" on Yelp after searching for a "tapas" restaurant. "Wolf in the woods" is such a strange name for a tapas restaurant...that's said, it's in the middle of a neighborhood in the hills...it's literally the only restaurant in the area and appears like a "wolf in the woods". We didn't have reservations but were seated outside within 10mins...the restaurant was full inside and out. I was impressed how many peeps were dining on a random Wednesday....i think this restaurant has a big following in the neighborhood. Service was attentive and we received our orders in good succession; we were never waiting for the next tapas or inundated with food( which would have been awful because our table top wasn't massive). I should note: my colleague has a shell fish allergy and they communicated that fact internationally very well....the food allergy was noted on every item in the bill which I've never seen! We ordered: Iberian board: the ham was amazing in all its salty oily goodness. Croquetas: had a memorable crunchy exterior. Chimay Octopus: the octopus had a lovely non-chewy texture. Salmon: the fish was great however the sauces made this dish! Pot de crème: a tour de force of chocolate goodness...crammed into a tiny container, delicious. It's been 20yrs since my last visit to Spain and everything about Wolf in the Woods took me back to that time; every individual tapas was its own dish, with amazing flavor and proportion. Providing an experience that was high end, and elevated in every way...from the unique location to the ingredients and service. My only knock, in Spain, good tapas could be found in the cheap, which isn't what this restaurant is about. read more
This was a very hyped restaurant from my online research. It's located in a cute neighborhood with easy street parking. The restaurant inside is very small where you can easily reach your arm to touch your neighboring table. I made a reservation at 4pm on Friday since that's what was able to get; it was quite a line before 4pm just to get in. The restaurant's cuisine is supposed to be New Mexican. I don't really know what this is exactly, but didn't understand how that translated to the dishes. I got the corn soup (sweet with nice toppings of the bread and chives but just okay), crudo, burger (pricey for a tiny things), and summer dish of spring peas. Overall, the food was fine. I don't quite see why there's hype here; the food didn't challenge my taste buds or do anything new. read more

It was everything I wanted it to be and more, right down to the hatch chile corn fritters. Ladle me up a bowlful any time. However, I also ordered the carne adovada, a dish I'm still thinking about and telling others to go and try. The unctuous sauce and tender meat sopped up with fry bread (which they'll bring more of for a small added fee), made for such a rich, comforting dish. I tried my friend's duck dish, also magnificent with a generous salted hand, though mine was superior. The freshly-baked focaccia was also stellar, and I asked if I could add the green hatch chile butter on the side; I just can't get enough of the hatch chile. Because of that, I ended up trying the chocolate pot, which didn't have this spice factor I was hoping for but delicious nonetheless. I went with a friend to dine though could see myself sitting at one of the seats at the bar solo, enjoying more from the menu. The Mission Hills neighborhood is charming, with beautiful historic homes surrounding the restaurant. I enjoyed an after-dinner walk just to enjoy the area. Definitely make a reservation well in advance. Lovely little place that's perfect for a romantic date night. Share some dishes and wine and then walk around the beautiful mission hills neighborhood. I loved this place, it's unique and there's nothing like it in San Diego. My favorite was their corn soup, octopus, and bread. I would definitely come again for another date night. The service was wonderful and the servers were attentive. This places focuses on wine (so no hard liquor). We came during happy hour which had a wine cocktail and chips for only about $8 or $9. The octopus did look better in photos, I think they changed it up and added olives which I wasn't expecting so just be mindful of that. Tables are tiny! read more
One of the best meals I've had in 2025! Decor was very Southwestern, with antlers, a huge twiggy chandelier and wolves peeking out from unexpected places. BF and I ordered 4 plates, each of which was an ideal size to share amongst two people. The star of the show was the hen of the woods polenta--a bed of perfectly seasoned, creamy polenta supported crisp shrooms and threads of sun dried tomato, all of which created a simple yet powerful, savory symphony. The pinon corn chowder deserves the accolades, and is visually pleasing and well spiced. Perfect for pairing with a delightfully warm and crispy baguette! We also tried the lamb meatballs, which were tender and flavorful, nestled in a delicious olive and tomato sauce. Everything here was amazing. The soup is a must try here. One of the best corn soup I had ever had. Everything on the menu is super unique and tasty. Another highlight was their lamb loin which was cooked to perfection. Our server David was also amazing. The staff there was super attentive and welcoming. We had an incredible dinner here last night. The dining room is lovely: bright, comfortable, and lively but we could still have a nice conversation. Food was amazing. We were too stuffed for dessert even though we thought we would be fine with the smaller plates we were sharing. Service was also wonderful, attentive yet we still felt like we were not rushed and could enjoy our meal. Definitely recommend. read more
I'd like to dock them a star only because it's beyond difficult to get a reservation here, but that's because it's so good they are just that busy! Nestled in a cozy mission hills neighborhood, wolf in the woods is truly a hidden gem. Every dish I've tried is boasting with flavor, fresh ingredients and personality. The menu is vast, and offers tapas style dishes perfect for sharing. The corn soup is one of the most popular dishes and is just so delicious we were scraping the bowl. Another favorite is the seared prime beef "tataki"- I literally ask for a spoon to get all the juices before the dish is cleared. In the various times I've come, I've tried the octopus, tosta, and the kitchen counter carrot cake. I've been dying to get my hands on the aguachile with no luck due to an allergy, but I'm holding out hope something changes in the ingredient list! I have seen countless people get the burger which looks phenomenal as well. They have an extensive wine menu and sommelier that's excellent at helping with selections. A treasure tucked away in an even more tucked away neighborhood of Mission Hills. Reservations are highly suggested as the secret is out about this location and it is an excellent place to take a date though I saw plenty of people just hanging out casually with friends as well. The server let us know that the Onion soup was one of the local favs and after trying it... we have to agree. The only downside is that there's just enough to barely share between two people and I nearly licked the bowl clean to get all the flavor out :) read more

Making reservations on Resy is a must. The place is tight with mainly outdoor seating. We got lucky when a waitlist opened up for 6pm two days prior. Got there at 5:30 to get a drink but they had our table ready. Parking was also plentiful in this residential neighborhood. Slant spaces available in front or parallel along the neighborhood. We ordered: -Chicken pate ($20): the brioche toast tasted like croutons and was better than the bread. Came with 4 pieces, we asked for extra. The pate was so silky smooth and rich in flavor. Top layer was butter not fat. -Pisto tosta ($16): roasted eggplant, squash and tomato chutney on bread. 4 pieces. -Octopus ($22): sliced thinly shape of a flower with Indian spice, cold dish -Yellowtail aquachile ($25): the infused chile salsa juice was so refreshing and the avocado and watermelon radish made the perfect pairing with a hint of spice from the Serrano peppers. -Carne adovada ($27): braised pork shoulder in red chili sauce. Very tender but gave me a beef stew vibe. Served with 2 pieces of fry bread. They serve wine not liquor. My Lupo e Luna ($18) cocktail had vermouth that was refreshing and delicious. We got kakawa chocolate pot for dessert ($16). Very subtle on the chocolate w a balance of raspberry, cake crumble, almond cacao served with pinon brittle. The brittle was my favorite. Looks like a honey comb but had a charred roasted marshmallow center taste. Overall, great food, presentation, ambiance and service. Nothing is free. When they offer you more bread, you'll be charged. First round may be complimentary but for sure second round. Would have been 5 stars but because they didn't give us a heads up and was sneaky about it until we got the bill, deduct 1 star. read more

We came here for a birthday celebration amongst friends in ordered more than we could eat, but guaranteed that food is amazing! So glad we came here. Everything is meant to be shared here so come with a group to get more variety! Maize chicken -is definitely a perfect for mushroom lovers and vegetarian sensor. There's actually no meat in it. Polenta is nice and smooth and not overly salty. The potatoes are perfect perfectly crisp for the side dish as well. Focaccia is a must just like all the other reviews - it's served warm, soft pillow and crisp on top. I highly recommend the chicken liver pate - came out looking a little weird with a layer of it might be olive oil on top, but it's actually a soft pate underneath. Delicious with all the little fixings that come on the board. Can never go wrong with yellowtail Agua Chile - just got a perfect amount of spice and taste extremely fresh. The beef tartare was surprisingly very good with the orange so make sure you get a couple of those in the bite. The sweet corn soup is exactly how it sounds. Not grainy at all. Comes out looking pretty big but it's a flat bowl and we loved it. The carrot cake for dessert was not overly sweet and everybody in my group loved the caramel that came with it. Service was definitely attentive! I have no complaints about those that helped us during the day. They're really good about giving suggestions as well. Note that it is street parking in Mission Hills. The place does close early due to noise limitations in a neighborhood area. If it stores the end of the night, they will ask you to move inside if there's room. There's a time limit on the tables on the outside depending on the size of the group. They're very good about keeping things on track. -they do take reservations and there's plenty of people who tried to walk in as well, but there's gonna be a bit of a week for the walk-ins Remember, it's worth the price! A nice and intimate dinner setting (largely due to the smaller space). Service was great - when I shared about my milk allergy, the server asked the kitchen exactly which dishes in our order could be modified to have it on the side vs. avoid altogether. They also have an in-house sommelier that assisted with choosing a bottle of wine. 1. Foccacia - good! Not the best I've ever had. Only 3 slices for $10 was a bit steep. 2. Yellowtail Aguachile - a very light dish! Fish was extremely fresh and they gave a big slice! Kind of impressive how they were able to fold the slice on itself like that. I wish it had a touch more citrus to make it pop, overall it's a very muted/ight flavor profile. 3. Citrus Cured Salmon - the Tomato compote in this actually made it stand out as a unique dish. The shallots (fried in butter) and labneh were served on the side for dairy avoidance. Each serving had a good amount of smoked salmon. 4. Seared Prime Beef Filet - really good! The beef was sooo tender. Loved the mandarin oranges and tobiko on top. 5. Steak tartare - very standard beef tartare. Nothing crazy. 6. Brussels Sprout Salad - this was a tough salad to chew (literally). I wish it was softened/massaged more prior to serving. Would not get it again. 7. It's not a "no kids allowed" restaurant, but as a mom of a 2 y/o and 6 y/o I wouldn't bring kids here. Restaurant experience is best for parties of 2, and tables are tight. It's not cheap either so I would want to enjoy myself.
Do you take reservations?
Yes they do take reservations. In fact, I would highly recommend it. It gets pretty busy.
Do they have any outside dining?
Yes, they do have patio seating with heaters right outside their restaurant.
