I actually ordered Woodfire through one of the local delivery services (Who also did an excellent job). I was a little concerned how the food would be since it was delivery instead of dine in. I need not have worried, it was as excellent had I gone to the restaurant. I ordered their signature bone in steak with Asparagus. I don't like Asparagus, but I tried it anyway and was blown away. It was delicious! I also ordered Au Gratin Potatoes which were creamy and yummy and for desert, Creme Brulee which was also spot on. A 'little' pricey but worth it. That said, I had one of the best sea bass entrees I have ever had, and I eat it just about every time I get near the coast. We celebrated my birthday with a meal here last weekend. We had a nice booth table, the restaurant has great ambiance. However the service was a huge letdown. We had a server, AJ, by his own admission who had just started working there. Our appetizer was delivered incorrect. Our waiter made the mistake, but tried to act as though it was our miscommunication and made no attempt to fix the mistake. We had to uncomfortably let the manager know to correct it. The manager was very nice. The food was very good. I had french onion soup and seafood pasta. My date ordered a $40 filet medium-rare. The server forgot the steak knife and took several minutes to go get it after the steak had been delivered. This sacrificed the quality of the steak as he had to sit waiting to eat it. In our opinion this was an unacceptable mistake on such a high end menu item. The food here may be up to the standard, but the service is not on par. This is one of the most elegant restaurants I have ever been to. My husband brought me here for my birthday. We both had steaks and they were melt in your mouth delicious. The chef personally came out to ask us how our dinner was which I thought was a nice touch. It was a little hard to understand the waiter who had an accent. The wine bar was a little intimidating, but fun. You get points on a card to try samples and insert it into the machine like a credit card and the machine pours the wine for you. We had the crab cakes for an appetizer, very good. And dessert was the best. I had the molten cake which I still can't stop thinking about. It's chocolate cake with gooey chocolate ganache in the middle - yum! Very cozy, warm and inviting. One of the best restaurant I have ever been to. The Woodfire Grille continues to set itself apart from competitors with it's ambience, (mostly) attentive staff and superb entrees. The cedar plank salmon is the best you will ever have! Moist inside and crispy on the outside, rich in flavors. Only one small complaint, I ordered the delicious crab cakes for an appetizer, ate only one and asked to have it packaged for taking home. Got home and no crab cake. Very disappointed after leaving more than a customary tip. Hey they were busy, but my wife's appetizer was wrapped to go and placed in a nice bag. This was my first time to the Woodfire Grill. It was a family gathering of 14 people. We had a large table in the back. It was almost like having our own room. Overall, everyone loved the food. The Flatbreads were a hit. People raved about Thai Seafood Pasta and Chilean Sea Bass. My wife loved the Tasmanian King Salmon. I had the NY Strip. It was not medium rare as ordered but it was very good. The Dirty Garlic Mashed potatoes were nothing special. The staff was excellent. They were there when you needed them and they did not rush us. One minor ding, the bartender had problems making a few drinks. However, my Makers Mark on the rocks was well prepared. Plus they have a very good wine list. Overall, it was a great place to eat. They handled a large group without any problems. I would like to go back and try some of the other items. To top it off, my brother-in-law picked up the tab. read more

The server was good, the bread was awesome, the came time for the actual food. The calamari tasted like something my kids eat in the form of "frozen fish sticks". We went to the woodfire for dinner on a Saturday night. We ended up eating at the bar as the wait for a table was long. Service at the bar was great. We also liked their wine and beer selection. We ordered the avocado rolls appetizer to start. It was perfectly cooked. The accompanying sauce was needed as the rolls were a little dry. The sauce itself was a little sweet and one note for me, but the overall dish was original and good. For dinner we split an order of the seared scallops. These were well cooked and very good. We also had a side of the lobster mac and cheese. The lobster meat and mac were good. I prefer a more assertive cheese. A little sharpness or additional flavor would have been welcome. Overall, we enjoyed this restaurant and will return. I recommend giving it a try. read more

Had dinner here and chose this location after reading other online reviews of the establishment. The food was great and cooked exactly to our specifications. Our server was very polite and added to the experience of fine dining. The fire theme of the restaurant was tastefully implemented in a way that was both very present yet unobtrusive. Others have remarked about the noise level and having read that prior to our dining experience we were listening for it. In all honesty the restaurant had somewhat of a more vibrant noise level but not anything we would consider displeasing or out of the ordinary and thankfully it was not pin-drop quiet either. Feel free to dress up if you are going for dinner, you will not be out of place, however do not be surprised to see other patrons dressed casually the restaurant is located inside a casino. read more

We had dinner at Wood Fire in Diamond Jo Casino on Saturday night and we were less than impressed. We ordered the calamari as a starter and the calamari was limp and soggy. It came out fast but reminded us of soggy Mc Donalds french fries or at very least something that was frozen and from a bag then microwaved. We were definitely disappointed as we have eaten calamari all across the U.S. and its one of our favorite appetizers. Moving on, my wife had the Tai Seafood Pasta and I had the Blackberry Barbeque Smoked Ribs as recommended by our waitress. The ribs were decent. Nothing to get excited about. The Tai Seafood Pasta was far from decent. The noodles were at least cooked right, but the scallops were seriously over cooked and rubbery as was the shrimp. My wife had 3 bites and then pushed it away. I took a bite and confirmed that the seafood in the dish was not cooked properly. We then told the waitress that my wife's dish had not been cooked properly when she came back to retrieve the plates and it was quite obvious that my wife had barley touched her plate. She just chuckled and asked if we wanted to take it home, to which we replied no. She then returned with the remaining ribs from my plate in a to go container and presented the check. My wife's over cooked meal was on the bill so I had to track down a manager and ask that it be removed because it was inedible. Which the manager took care of right away. Thankfully I had cash on me because we didn't want to wait on the waitress to run a card after we had to find the manager to correct the issue. I'm not saying the service was horrible. It definitely could have been better, but wasn't horrible. I am just saying the experience as a whole was less than acceptable for a restaurant like this. At least the wine was good. read more

We started out with drinks. One of the ladies couldn't decide in a wine so they offered a 1oz sample which ended up costing $ 2.10! Two so us ordered salads and one had the lobster bisque and the other the French onion soup. We were ready to order 2 prime rib and the ribeye special($49). We were going to split the steak and order 3 sides. The waitress told us there would be a $6 splitting fee. I said I was vegetarian and was only ordering the sides. She said we could only get it waived if we ordered a salad as an entree . I have never had a fine dining restaurant impose a charge for sharing nor pay for a taste of wine! Well designed, Intimate ambiance only interrupted by male patrons in baseball caps wearing polo shirts in the winter; and eyes widened by having to pay more than $9.00 for an entree - WAIT, We ARE at a casino restaurant! The waitstaff listened well and their presentation was professional. The $40 bottle of an Australian Two Sisters red blend was wonderful. The menu while somewhat, classic did require studying. Interesting entrees started at $17 and rose from there. Shrimp cocktail and lobster bisque were both tasty and presented well. Chilean sea bass in Miso was cooked to perfection as was the blackened salmon. Suggest splitting any sides. Coffee was strong and freshly brewed. Add to that free and close by parking, no traffic to speak of (I'm from Chgo) Its now my new favorite Tri State fine dining destination. read more

First time in this establishment and the last. I don't rate restaurants by how much the waitstaff bends over for you or how nice the napkins are folded. When you pay $35 dollars for a piece of meat you would expect it to be better than average. The ribeye I was served was cooked ok but it was not a quality cut of meat. The steak was tough and not very flavorful. I could serve the patrons here a ribeye from my local store off my grill that would melt in their mouth with little effort. The asparagus was hard and tasted old. The garlic potatoes were not very flavorful and I didn't even care to eat them after three forks worth. The bread was very good and had I known the food wouldn't match that I would have just asked for more bread The place is very nice and the waitress was great but again I don't pay to look at fancy plates and smiles. I would have rather had a decent steak and potatoes that tasted like something instead of a waitress that asked me "how is everything tasting " ten times and me having to lie that it tastes great. read more

Anniversary dinner on 12/28/11. Must have hit a bad night, because both the food and the service was VERY disappointing. Bartender was too busy visiting with her friend to take care of our drinks, appetizer order NEVER got delivered to us, our server didn't know the items on the menu, and apparently the chef was on vacation because our steaks were very poor. I have visited from Chicago maybe 10 times in the last couple years. Have eaten here maybe four times and it is excellent everytime. This is the best restaurant, by a very long shot, I have experienced in Dubuque. The food is excellent and the wait staff very attentive. The wine guy is knowlegeable and a lot of fun. I know something about wine and this place has the best wine list, based on selection and price, i have ever seen. It is a mistake to order wine by the glass here as that is not really a bargin. But by the bottle...the wines are near retail price (not the usual 100% or more mark up) and the selection is just outstanding. If your not sure what to order, ask the wine guy...he will get you on target and may give you a couple tastes to see what's going to punch your buttons. For $50 or $60 you can get two great bottles and for $100 or $110 you can get two outstanding bottles. Go have some fun! read more

I wasn't sure about eating at a casino restaurant but am glad we walked in and tried it. So glad, we went back a 2nd time during our 1 week visit to Dubuque. Prices per entree were about $5-7 less than we would pay at a comparable restaurant at home in NJ (restaurant reminded me a bit of a chain called Fleming's). Delicious lobster bisque - lighter taste than most I have had. My wife enjoyed the avocado rolls. The first night, I had the sirloin with the melted blue cheese. The steak was perfectly done. The cheese, for me, was a much thicker topping than I expected and made the dish too heavy / rich for me so I scraped it off. If you love blue cheese, go for it. The salmon - we tried the cedar plank and blackened - was very good. Side dishes were for one person (not huge side dishes which you sometimes find at steak places). The cold truffles they gave us when we took the check were enough dessert for us as we were stuffed. read more
