I'm reviewing the writing class, held in Tucson, which was a disappointing experience. The teacher is clearly knowledgeable and holds one of the highest prizes in journalism. The training ostensibly focuses on how to improve one's writing from a conceptual level. You'll learn narrative structure and techniques, how to audit your own work, and be inspired by some great examples. But it's pretty clear the teacher would rather be doing something other than holding forth for a half-dozen people who are either aspiring authors or mid-career writers looking to improve their skills. The prickly personality and lack of engagement on display really took away from the experience. They seem world-weary and somewhat bitter. I got my money's worth, absolutely, even if the teacher was reading from their yellowed notes. But if you're going in looking to sit at the feet of an inspirational person, who will make you feel like they've read the material you submitted, displays enthusiasm about your work, and is prepared to share personal feedback, I advise looking elsewhere.

"YARN," I shouted and immediately spun to my right and into the driveway of what looked to be someone's house. Now, you probably think I'm some sort of hardcore knitting addict but that isn't the case. I just got back into knitting and am in the middle of knitting a pair of hand warmers for my brother's girlfriend. I bought yarn that was slightly thinner than the yarn I used to make my first pair of hand warmers, so it looked really "loose" on the needles. I wanted a slightly smaller set of needles but ran out of time before our trip. I sort of/definitely planned to stop at whatever yarn place there was to scratch that itch of feeling unprepared. So that's how we ended up at Playing with Yarn. I immediately found a set of size 2 bamboo needles for the insanely low price of $4.70. Granted these were not Clover's Takuma needles but they were bamboo and under five dollars. I took a look at the yarn - there is a pretty wide selection- before paying. I knit mostly in my school years, so any skein of yarn over $9 is pricey to me even if it's super nice merino wool, hand dyed, blah blah blah. It's a very small shop to be sure, but the owners are nice and the selection is good and decently priced. Also, if you go up to the second floor, there is a great view of Lake Superior!
