I took a 400 Hofner Beatle bass in and asked what it would cost to fix some fret sprout and 4 spots where there was fret buzz. The guy pulled out fret rockers and gizmos with gauges and said I had a few raised frets. It would cost $210 or so to fix everything. I said that the bass only costs $400 and asked if there was a cheaper way just to fix the 4 spots where there was fret buzz. No, he said that he had to go through the whole $210 process. I decided against it and went home and watched a few Youtube videos on raised frets. I didn't have any luthier gear, just a truss rod tool that had a hammer shaped handle that was dipped in rubber. I held the bass in my hand, pushed the strings to the side, and tapped down the high frets with my truss rod tool. Fixed all the high frets in about 10 minutes for free. read more

They have been my go to guys for setting up all my basses since I discovered them many years ago. Matt is the guy who has done all of my work but they are all excellent. They are the best luthiers in the west in my opinion. They remind me a lot of the original Stars Guitars in the old days in San Francisco. The service for any set up or repair is as it gets. And they are worth every penny. I'm currently on a multi month waiting list to get all of my axes re done but won't let anyone else work on my vintage and custom pieces. They did an awesome job fixing my treasured Martin D28 from a crack caused by Colorado dryness. Service was courteous and technically competent. I just want to say how grateful I am for the work done on my acoustic guitar. My dad, a wonderful guitarist and my best friend, gave it to me before he died and since then, it has been my most beloved belonging. Took my Les Paul Standard '82 in for a refret. I was nervous leaving it in someone else's hands but had only heard good things about this shop. In the end got my neck planed and refretted. We were able save the bone nut by using a bone shim which I prefer and love. It has a Kahler 2200 on it which was also serviced. It took a few weeks but was well worth the wait. I've been going to Woodsong's for maybe 12-15 years now. I'm pretty decent at most guitar repairs myself, but if something's "scary" like resetting the neck and correcting the bridge position of my dad's Martin D-35, or refretting a geriatric Les Paul, this is where I go. I haven't had everyone there work on my instruments (I always ask for Matt), but I've talked to some of the other luthiers and seen their work, and I've never seen anything less than stellar qualify. I would give 6 stars if possible. The folks at Woodsongs Lutherie know their stuff. I brought in a early 80's mass produced Washburn acoustic. It has never been set up correctly. Matt took a look at it and immediately knew what needed to be done. I told him what my budget was and he worked within that. I got the guitar back within 5 business days (these guys are busy), and found that Matt went above and beyond. This guitar has never sounded so good. The feel, set up, string-height, playability.... everything was great. Not only that, but it looked great too. The neck was polished, the frets were polished, the guitar body was cleaned. I've had exceptional service every single time I've brought an instrument here for service of any kind. One of the biggest things that separates this shop from any other I've worked with is the especially great customer service. I went to the woodsongs store to get a saddle for my Venturo Bruno V-1588F flamenco guitar. They sent me to the lutherie across the street. He glanced at it and said it had no value, that I could get 2 of them for what he would charge. He wouldn't even sell me a saddle, he wanted to replace the whole bridge, on a vintage guitar. It wasn't worth fixing, but if I did, he would fix parts that didn't need to be fixed. The bridge just need one part by the saddle reinforced. How hard is it, for the few minutes a customer is in your shop, not to insult their guitar? Now I am not even going to buy anything from their store, let alone have a guitar fixed. I went over to Robb's Boulder Music and got a Bone saddle, and I will do it myself. read more

This place is the best instrument repair shop in Colorado. They repair most any acoustic instrument including guitars, banjos, mandolins or violins. I have had two guitars setup here, a broken headstock fixed on another and an under saddle pickup system installed in another. They do great work and are reasonably priced. Absolutely the most absurd excuse for professionals. I took my '72 Tele in for a fret job , $900 later, I had brand new useless frets on a useless neck. The truss rod wouldn't work , the fingerboard hadn't been planed. What a rip-off ! Don't waste your time and money !!! read more

If you're a traveling musician who needs Martin or Taylor warranty work, move along, you're SOL and not welcome here. They have a 3-4 week backlog, so I'm sure they do good work (cough, read below)...but to just say "tough luck" to those of us who keep new players and customers coming to you is so wrong, on so many levels, I can't count them all. This was my second chance here, two yrs. ago I made an appointment 3 weeks in advance, dropped off the guitar for repair (that the owner wanted to do personally), went in to pick it up the next day but he hadn't even started on it. I had to drive 8 hours the next day after the delay to catch up with my band...only to find my guitar had two very significant dents in my soundboard when I pulled it out of the case. Never Again. If you can afford to lose your instrument for 4 weeks, well, I guess this is the shop for you. If you're trying to get a repair as you tour through Boulder, forget about it. I'll update this post if I find a place that will repair working/road musicians instruments in the Denver area...difficult so far. read more

I was in town for the weekend and spotted Woodsongs while running errands. The shop has a well curated selection of acoustic guitars, ukuleles, some nice Native American flutes, banjos, tin whistles, etc. and accessories. There's also an attached repair shop in a homey building. There's a nice selection of music books as well. It definitely has the feel of a destination store for an acoustic musician with something for every budget. If I didn't already have a tenor guitar I wouldn't have been able to leave without the Blueridge they had behind the counter for a very reasonable price. read more

I've been using Woodsongs Lutherie for almost 20 years. They've done set ups, fret levels, bone nut & saddle installs, simple repairs and complex repairs. Took my Taylor 410 Acoustic/Electric into Woodsongs for a fret job. They installed the frets incorrectly or used the wrong guage of frets. Messed up the neck, intonation, & ability to properly tune up. Took it back twice and they lied about the frets. Said they were fine. The 3rd time they admited it was the frets. Redid the fret job after that but the damage was done. Jon Eton lied and said it wouldn't have negative effect on guitar. Taylor techs disagree, saying it absolutely would permanently damage guitar. Also said it was negligent to tell me otherwise. After more than a year, still no satisfaction from Woodsongs. They've done every nickel & dime fake repair to no avail. Did not check Taylor specs for saddle piece until 4th try. Refused to use bone for the saddle, changed the sound. Reinstalled the nut crooked. The list goes on. They refuse to take responsibility and have been extremely ignorant and condescending toward me throughout the process. Really hard to keep this guitar in tune and is very frustrating for gigging. Before all of this I played this guitar for nearly 20 years with absolutely zero problems with tuning, intonation or sound. Just a beautiful instument. Now it simply is not even the same guitar. Have to take it to another repair shop for evaluation. They may be able to fix it or send it to Taylor to look at. Or I could end up having to buy another guitar. All because I took it to Woodsongs for a simple fret job. They completely blew it. I will never refer anyone to Woodsongs Lutherie. They're very willing to tell you how great they are. But when they mess up they are very cowardly and lie about it. I can barely believe all if this myself but it's the truth. I'll never return to Woodsongs again. read more
