I live in Los Angeles where there's no shortage of Guitar Center stores and independent shops, but my experience with Guitar Center over the years hadn't been great. And I didn't want some old acoustic that had been sitting around in Norm's Rare Guitars for 15 years being played by the unwashed masses. When I finally settled on the guitar I wanted, I looked it up online and found this place called Wildwood Guitars. They were listing the top level of this particular model for less than the lower level was being offered everywhere else, but it was brand new. I was skeptical and I was also hesitant to buy a guitar from out of state. But then I read the stellar reviews about them and a friend of mine who works in the industry said they're a highly respected business. So I sent them an e-mail and got very thorough responses back, addressing all my questions. Then I find out that not only am I getting the guitar I want at a discount, but their standard operating procedure is to set it up to my specifications and even outfit it with the strings I want. I would be going out of town so they called me on the phone to make sure they'd be shipping it when I wanted them to. They wanted to make sure I'd have plenty of time to check it over and make sure I was happy with it. Sure enough, the guitar arrived just as described, nicely and securely packaged. I can not recommend Wildwood Guitars enough. I've been searching and researching for months ahead of the purchase of a guitar that will be a graduation gift for my son. I knew he wanted a Gibson Les Paul, and liked the necks on the Standard 50s. But I didn't want just any guitar that could be found on the wall of any local GC or other big box guitar store. I also knew that I didn't have $6700+ for a custom shop guitar. After searching the web for months I found that Wildwood had the perfect alternative...their Wildwood Select Les Pauls which have amazing AAA tops and exclusive colors. I started by emailing them and I was surprised to get a response from Steve within an hour or so even though it was a Sunday evening! So far great service. Over the next few days I was a royal pain in their butts asking for photos of specific guitars from the site which they always sent to me in short order. Then I placed an order...only to second-guess myself and ask for more pictures. You guessed it...after all that I changed my order. I apologized to Steve for all the back and forth but instead of being annoyed with me he couldn't have been nicer. I dealt with Steve, Greg and Lance and they were all AWESOME! This place sells guitars that go for much more than the cost of the one that I ordered for my son, but they treated me like I was buying the most expensive vintage guitar in the store. Wildwood will be our first place we look when we're in the market for another guitar and I hope to stop in in person if I find myself in the Denver/Boulder area. Buying a guitar, especially an expensive one online can be a little stressful but the guys at Wildwood go the extra mile and provide the kind of service and patience to set your mind at ease. I visited Wildwood before the pandemic happened just based upon the good things said on a very popular forum I'm a member of. On that visit I was greeted with the coolest and friendliest bunch one could wish for. I was basically asked "what brings you in?" That led to some chat with the guys and I was given a free t-shirt to go with the strings I bought that day. I even got my choice of color! Pretty cool and I knew I would have to buy a guitar there someday. While I wish their storefront was open now (it still isn't), the customer service hasn't lapsed into the levels I've experienced at other Denver area instrument shops. With the massive fire Louisville suffered this last year, I thought it might be at least a little helpful to make the sales tax on a larger purchase help the city (I live in Broomfield, the next city over and Louisville is a cool place tucked between Broomfield and the famous Boulder Colorado). I purchased my first guitar from Wildwood today and it was an excellent experience. Cheers guys, I hope you can get your storefront back up and running when you are comfortable. After years of doing business with this company, I was blown off on legitimate quality control issues with Fender, Martin and Gibson "custom shop" instruments. At least as far as mail orders concerned, it is "get them out of the door as fast as the possible" on a volume basis and don't stand behind quality control failures knowing that mail order return is very difficult on the customer. I brought all these items to the attention with months of email and phone communications, and eventually I simply had to fend for myself because the energy of the inertial failure simply wore me out. I am not talking about consumer "Guitar Center" type purchases. I am talking about "custom shop" purchases from the big three, where all I received was "you know we've had a hard time dealing with them, but..." It is my opinion that Wildwood was complicit in a lot of the problems that caused Gibson horrible embarrassment. I purchased very expensive "custom shop" level instruments from this company since 2002, and I would neither recommend nor ever purchase an instrument from this company. All of the slick photos and Greg Koch videos are not a substitute for providing customer service and standing by claims of quality. The truth of the matter, is many customers don't truly understand what a playable instrument is, and problems are not uncovered until their quality control failures that cannot be ignored. Bluntly, this is not the kind of stuff that necessarily comes out during a 48 an hour approval. It is my opinion all the claims of QC'ing the manufacturers are simply not true - otherwise these instruments would not come to customers in this condition, and if there was a problem, the store would offer to make them right. It's inconceivable in my opinion that I could be so unlucky. read more

I still remember getting my Jazzmaster in 1993, and every few years, got myself a slightly higher quality guitar, to where I finally got my dream Custom Shop Jazzmaster a few years ago. I've bought 6 guitars from Wildwood, since the early 1990's, and I STILL pour over the online inventory like a kid in a candy shop. I have been looking for a PRS for quite a while and have had such a hard time finding the model I was looking for in a color I liked. When I saw this guitar on their website, I loved it but given the price, really wanted to try it out. The 'showroom closed' message on their website caused me to be unsure if I would be able to try out the guitar. When I called I was greeted by the most helpful sales person I think I have ever spoken with. He helped me think through options I might want to try, and importantly, he let me know that if the weather is nice they are letting people try out guitars out front of the store. Like a curbside guitar test drive! I live an hour away, so I called ahead and headed over today, and when I got there the owner was out front greeting the people coming to try guitars personally. If the person on the phone was helpful, he was even more so. I have been in and around musical instrument sales since I was 21 years old in one way, shape of form and stores like GC could really learn a thing or two from this level of kindness in their customer service (and I say that as a former GC employee cira 2001). Honestly, I am glad the inside of the store is closed, not because I wouldn't have loved to see a store full of guitars, but because nothing compares to the experience I had today. This is the first time I have ever gotten to try out any instruments, let alone this beautiful guitar, with a view of the front range on a spectacular fall Colorado day. He brought out an amp, and let me settle in and get to know the guitars. Aside from that, getting to see the finish of the guitars I was trying out in natural sunlight gave me such an incredible picture of the guitars finish and details. Being newer to guitar, this was my first time purchasing a guitar from Wildwood, and they now have a life long customer. Even if I wouldn't have been able to go to the store, the willingness of the store staff to support the buying experience was second to none. Simply put, the greatest guitar shop on earth. Yes, the store itself is small and the amount of instruments in the showroom is limited, but they have almost anything you could ask for in their warehouse next door. Steve (the owner) was humble and down to earth. The two salesmen I dealt with, Steve and Lance, were pros. I had made an internet purchase from Wildwood in 2007, but I had the opportunity to visit the store in person while on vacation last week. They didn't even have exactly what I was looking for, but I still ended up buying two more guitars from them. It's nice to have something to work for at the end of the day. that's my main take-away after stopping by Wildwood Guitars on my way back east after a coast to coast trip with the family. Not one guitar ontheir showroom floor was 2nd rate. Bruce greeted my friend we were staying with and I at the door. You could tell the staff were lovers of the craft - I felt no pressure to buy; sounds like the majority of sales are online with most of their stock in the warehouse. Being from Maryland, I pinged them on some PRS guitars before settling on an early 60s relic candy apple Strat with a rosewood neck. He took me to a room in the back and plugged into a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe to try it out (hats off to the Fender custom shop, amazing work). Any apprehension I've had in the past toward buying an instrument online has been sent to the side. I absolutely love this place. My cousin showed me this beautiful Les Paul he purchased from Wildwood and I knew I was going to make the trek down to Boulder to see what there was to see. I was pleasantly surprised. The shop is right on the main street in Louisville. A great little shop with a LOT of guitars to look at and try out. They have vintage as well as new instruments. They have a special relationship with Gibson and they have a great selection of Gibson specifically. They also offer custom and specialty Gibsons. I found one of the Wildwood custom ES-335's in a beautiful cherry red finish (my dream guitar) and fell in love. It wasn't cheap... But the beauty of it was that Wildwood offers financing through Affirm. I was able to sign up for 12 months financing with 0% interest! What a great deal! I have to mention their excellent service as well. The staff are very friendly and truly love what they do. They are very knowledgeable about guitars, amps and pedals. They will also refer you to outside sources (i.e. a good repair shop) if they cannot help with a particular request. They referred me to a great repair shop in Boulder who also turned out to be great and accommodating people! They want to ensure you're getting the exact instrument you're looking for, even if it's between two different guitars of the same model. They will work with you and tune up the guitar to how you prefer it. And after you've purchased, they will tune the guitar up to ensure that it is properly acclimated to the environment your guitar lives in. If you were to ask Guitar Center to do that they'd laugh in your face! I highly recommend you shop for a guitar here. You won't be disappointed! read more

This shop has a lot more inventory than it appears as most inventory is kept in the back room. Most of the stock is in the $1000+ range, with the higher end models displayed in the shop. The best way to try the models you are interested in is to check their web site, and then the staff will be happy to pull them from the back to try out. Very knowledgeable staff and anything you buy there will be set up nicely.
