To call the "luthier" at this shop incompetent would be insulting to the incompetent. I brought in a $3000+ acoustic guitar for a very minor repair and they destroyed it (and insisted I pay them for their damage). You could train a chimp to setup an electric guitar, but if you have an acoustic you love DO NOT bring it to this shop. read more

They completely transformed my $5,000 Les Paul R8!!! New ownership, same fantastic work/service! I have a small collection of VERY nice guitars. My R8 is now my favorite...this from a guy who didn't even like Les Paul guitars very much in the first place. Last year, I bought a 50th anniversary Tom Murphy R8 that had already been re-fretted. The frets were too high for my taste. Since they weren't original, I didn't mind changing them out. Boy am I glad I did! I brought it home late last night (they stayed open late for me YMMV) and went to bed without playing it. First thing this morning I plugged it in and oh my lord! This thing nearly plays itself! I am so impressed. Christian - one of the new owners who also makes his own guitars - planed the fretboard, hand shaped a new bone nut, and set this thing up perfectly. I am beside myself at how much better this thing plays. In addition, a couple years ago, I brought them a rare Fender Strat (1 of 125) that has a gorgeous red quilted top that puts most PRS's to shame. There was a 1/2" or so circular gouge in the top that went all the way to the bare wood. It looked like a super model who was missing her front teeth. I left it with these guys for a week or so and when I got it back, I couldn't stop smiling. If I didn't know exactly where to look and what to look for, I would have NEVER known it had been damaged. As you can imagine it is NOT easy to make a repair like that blend in to a top that shows the natural grain of the wood but these guys did it. Thanks Christian! Mark Lavanish. read more

I brought a Takamine 12 string in that needed a new nut and some fretwork. 275 Dollars later, I was told that the neck angle was incorrectly set at the factory. The guitar was still barely playable after spending 2 weeks in their humidifier and further time in my high humidity room. Although I was assured that the guitar was repairable when I brought it in, I just wished the experts had checked the neck angle before they worked on it, because it's still not playable. I suggest that you know exactly what's wrong with your guitar before you have CGS do any work. I didn't and now I have a beautiful expensive wall decoration. read more

Look: ya get what you pay for. I'm not saying Wildwood's or Woodsong's don't do perfectly OK work, but if you're in a hurry to get it back, forget those places. And Baxendale GUARANTEES his set-up FOR A WHOLE YEAR. That means if the axe tweaks a little bit over the course of a year, which is inevitable in Colorado's dry climate, you take it back to Scott and he adjusts it FREE OF CHARGE, while you're standing there. There are a number of great repair shops in town, but only Colfax Guitar Shop offers everything I look for in a guitar shop. It's blue-collar (that's a top-shelf compliment). There is zero ego in the whole store. All four of the guys there take their job as consummate professionals. The work they turn out is without a doubt on the highest echelon, alongside any of the best repair shops in the country. I say this as someone who sells vintage flattops to put dinner on the table. Guitars are my job. I have been in, or sold to, just about every big name shop in the country. My guitars are always ready to play, and it's always because of the impeccable work that Dave, Christian, Mike, and Nils have put into my guitars. You can bring in an 1860's German parlor guitar, to a Larson Brothers Jumbo, to your Pre-CBS anything, to your Hello Kitty guitar. It doesn't matter. These guys will approach any guitar with the same professionalism. You never have to worry about them giving your guitar back to you and leaving you unhappy with the work. This is a REAL guitar shop, done by REAL repairmen (or luthiers, if you prefer the term.) Plus, they all love to talk about the history of the guitar, which is an endless quest that those who venture it love to find in others doing the same. In closing, let me just say that you can rest assured that all four guys working here are down to earth, unassuming dudes. They love their work, and they fix everything the right way. Their customer service is top-notch. This is a store full of honest, good people. I've never had a guitar that was worked on at Colfax that the customer I went on to sell it to didn't love. And they've worked on a TON of my guitars. It's hands-down my favorite guitar shop in the country, because they've never let me down. This review is long overdue, but whatever. There is no guitar too nice or too damaged that they won't fix perfectly, and there's no guitar so humble or low-priced that they'd thumb their nose at. I have taken in both my American Strat for the pro set up, and a Takamine acoustic electric that needed a new plug jack. Both jobs were done in a very timely manner at a good price. I trust these guys to do a great job with whatever I may need on my instruments. They also spent a few minutes talking to me to understand how I would like the guitar set up. Look Scott the owner is nice and all, but I took a guitar in to get setup (truss rod adjusted, intonation set, cleaned up) and he was going to charge me $90 plus an additional $7 for guitar stings. Called up a few other places including Wildwood Guitars and Woodsong's Lutherie and got prices for the same service in the $55-$70 range, pricing included strings. Basically would have paid $30 -$45 more for the same service at Colfax Guitars. I definitely felt taken advantage of. Probably won't go here again. read more

I have taken several guitars to this shop. The work has been excellent, the product of craftsmen that know their stuff. In particular, I had a bigsby added to a Samick RL-123 that required repositioning of the bridge which included filling in the previous location holes. The refinish work was superb. I like this shop. I had them set up my new Mexican Strat, and do a fret job on my Les Paul. They ask questions about what and how you play so they can adjust it just right for your style. I wasn't even sure if my Les Paul frets could be saved, but it feels/ plays better than it has in years. For the strat setup he took the time to file the fret ends so it feels nice and smooth and included that in the price. I am not sure who these people are talking about. I have been taking my guitars to Colfax for years. I don't know who 'Scott' is. I thought Dave owned the business. I have taken an Epiphone, Larrivee (and my girlfriend's Larrivee), Ibanez Bass, Fender American Standard, Fender Cyclone, and had a myriad of work done. I have had one problem with the Ibanez not being grounded properly. I talked to Dave he said bring it in and he would fix it. No grief. No crap. No tension. Bring it in and it will get taken care of. For instance the Ibanez was totally reworked. They put in three pick-ups; new 250k pots; new bone nut; and a Babicz bridge. Except for the grounding, the work has been flawless. The intonation and action are perfect. I have had every type of work done except major reconstruction (that being said I have seen two major reconstructions they have done and the work was incredible). Bone nuts fashioned (Both Larrivee's and the Ibanez ). Set-ups (multiple instruments). Major electrical work (Ibanez and Cyclone). Bridge reseated (Epiphone FT-570). Tuners replaced (Cyclone). This being said I really am wondering if the people who gave Colfax Guitar Shop actually went there. Dave is a great small business owner. He does more than fix guitars; he creates community in his shop. read more
