A friend and I chatted with Blinky for about 20 minutes. He broke down and explained a lot about board design. What a treat. He's been doing this so long and he's still stoked and friendly. The rest of the staff were also very friendly. Amazingly a yelper below complained because they don't have enough apparel and bikinis. How ironic is that? There are hardly any real surfboard shops left, since most shop floor rooms are covered with "apparel and bikinis", which carry higher profit margins than surfboards. That person should visit one of Socal's many fine mall surfboard shops and they'll find all the bikinis they need.

Heading north on US 101 is great as you still may get some beach views, but you're on the other side of the highway. Heading south on US 101 is better because you're closer to the waters and you have the opportunity to stop at various outlooks and viewpoints. My daughter and I went out last weekend, and we had an absolutely terrific time from start to finish. I hadn't stepped on a surfboard in over 55 years and had forgotten just about everything. On top of that, being 65, my body doesn't quite move the way it used to! But Evan was incredibly patient, encouraging, and an outstanding instructor. He broke down the basics perfectly and gave us the exact foundation and confidence we needed to engage in this wonderful sport. Yes, I had some aches and pains the next day (nothing a little Advil couldn't easily handle!), but it was worth every single second. My daughter and I are both officially hooked and will absolutely be going back for more lessons. If Evan can get a 65-year-old riding waves after a five-decade hiatus, he can teach anyone!

Only way to access it is by taking Victoria all the way to the end with a sharp right onto San Nicholas before Victoria turns into Roosevelt and there's a small public parking lot at the end on the left. There are bathrooms which are pretty nice for public beach bathrooms and the beach is so nice here! Sand is clean, beach is wide... If the lot is full you can try to find parking on San Nicholas or on Ocean where there are several little beach access points between the homes... Also if you drive all the way down ocean, at the very end, at the last house there's a hidden road that looks like a private driveway but it's not, turn right, it's long and tight, and it will take you to another small beach parking lot!! A hidden gem! There's even a public bathroom out on the sand, a bit of a walk from the lot and very clean! Highly recommend!

He said he's heading up to NorCal later this week, so we're already sad we won't have him next time. He kicked things off with about 30 minutes onshore, rules, safety just learning the basics and getting our balance, then it was straight into the waves. And yes, everyone actually stood up and surfed! The kids thought they knew the ocean from boogie boarding, but this was a whole new level of fun. Lots of wipeouts, tons of laughs, and those "I can't believe I just did that" moments.
