We had such a great time shopping for Christmas gifts! The employees were incredibly fun, kind, and welcoming--and such great sports as we brought Elf along to shop with us. Love this place! They always have great random finds! I always plan at least an hour to go through this store. You have to go down every aisle. This is the only place I can find Gluhwein during the holidays. If you haven't tried it. Try it! It's a German mulled wine. My favorite is actually Scandinavian. You drink it warm/hot. It's delicious! I love going through all the different choices they have for table ware. Every holiday they have several sets to choose from. Anytime I want to make a change, they have every thing I need. Colors, styles, etc. They also have great choices for bathroom decor too. I've visited a few times now and I love this store. My only complaint has to be the overpriced items. I get it, it's a specialty store and you're not going to find a lot stores like it in Bakersfield. I shouldn't complain I know... blah blah blah. What good of a Yelper would I be if I didn't warn you before you visited haha. I will definitely be back, so don't mind me. This place has really good gift ideas for any occasion. It has nice unique products from several places around the world. My favorite items are the goodies from the UK and obviously from different areas of Asia. My ex-boss many moons ago used to always bring me back chocolates from the UK, so it reminds me of my youth and it also reminds me that the chocolates from the UK are better than the ones in the US. They are a lot smoother, less sweeter and tastier. Having said that, I recommend the goodies from the UK. Cost Plus World Market doesn't only have goodies, they have a lot of imported products like alcohol and different food items. I can probably spend a couple hours browsing in this store. During these times, masks were required during the recent visits. Lines were also marked to keep your distance, but the store wasn't very busy every visit so I don't think you'll have any issues with social distancing. Staff was always pleasant and when we had questions, they were very polite and even helped us find some items. Signing up to become a rewards member is free and will give you some % off. Occasionally you'll also get some pretty neat deals thru text or they will email you some offers. I recently stopped into world market to find Clotted Cream, which you can't buy anywhere else in town. I had purchased some on Amazon but it was 3 weeks out with shipping. Not only did they have what I was looking for, the prices were significantly lower here than what I paid online and the selection was great. I will say the staff was unable to assist me in finding the product (they hadn't heard of it, understandable) but the store is well organized with their national cuisine sections. Overall a great place to find new and unique international foods. I love their decor as well and there are typically some great finds here, especially in their artwork section. read more

My husband and I love this store! It is well organized and if you sign up (free) you can get freebies and discounts. The employees are so helpful and seem genuinely happy. They have good deals online that you can pick up in the store, usually the same day. We recently picked up something new to try and make at home, churros. You add water to the mix and it came with a small piping bag. We used a Wilton piping bag and star tip that I owned. Don't follow the directions, it has you add too much water and you'll get funnel cakes. Eventually, we got the hang of it and were able to enjoy hot churros at home. They were delicious. My favorite things from this store include the greeting cards, wine/beer, jewelry, crepe mix, and Hello Kitty items. This is a great place to get a gift for anyone. read more

I come here a lot. I love it. Takes me away to other little pockets of the world, if not for just a few moments. I had already done a review on this place years ago and it was zapped. So, will keep this brief, in case. Some of the staff recognizes us now and even knows what we look for. I love the food area for its ethnic choices, noodles, sauces. We buy their plantain chips all the time. They have hard to find candy and some imported Canadian chocolate bars that I can only find here. (Mars, Coffee Crisp) I have purchased pillows from here, kitchen dishes, curtains, you name it. I can never come out of here empty handed and when I have a coupon, even better. Other areas of mention are the clearance spots, cool jewelry, handmade soaps, candles and unique beer/fun wine. We recently bought a smoker grill from here and we are learning, having fun with that. The employees are 5 star. Really friendly and they want you to enjoy your shopping experience. If you need a gift for that hard to find person, this would be your place. The prices are great. They even have really cute cards for every occasion. Seasonal things are usually found in the center of the store. Today we purchased a variety of spices to fuel our cooking passion. Besides being restaurant foodies, we love to cook and enjoy experimenting with a variety of cuisines. If cooking is your thing, you can find a decent supply of imported spices and cooking products here to stock your pantry with. At World Market, everywhere you turn there is something interesting to see that draws you in! Cool furniture, cute cookware, cards and candies, jewelry and scarves, international snacks, and booze (most importantly) to name a few! I want to completely furnish my home with the furniture here. It appears to be well made (although expensive) and stylish. They have a wall of just...pillows. I wanted to lay them all down and take a nap. The food section, which is in the back, is my favorite part. They carry food and drinks from all over the world. I was impressed to see things like curry flavored Heinz beans, German sausages and smoked cheeses, Kinder chocolate, a variety of gnocchi, Japanese super soda candies that I have only seen in two other places, and Albanese gummy bears, which are from Indiana! I was excited to see these because I am from Kentucky and have visited the Albanese candy outlet store. Their gummies are out of this world! The wine/liquor selection at World Market is pretty vast. I was a little overwhelmed, to be honest. They have a lot of what I would consider niche or novelty items. For example, wine inspired by the band Train and Breaking Bad inspired Heisenberg blue vodka (pretty cool stuff)! I think it goes without saying that I'm coming back to World Market. I love shopping at Cost Plus World Market. It's similar in concept to a Pier 1, but three times the size and with an extensive food and wine department. They carry a variety of items from all over the world, many of them with ethnic themes, but created by people of that actual ethnicity and in the actual country, not just copycat items made here in the states or n China. As you walk in, there is a section of art and prints on your right, followed closely by sections of jewelry and bed and bath products. There are toys for children from all over the world. You can find all types of furniture and baskets, too. To the front left is an extensive selection of housewares: dishes, glasses, kitchen gadgets, you name it. In the back left corner is their wine department with a large selection of local and international wines. My favorite section is that housing food and beverage products. They have a wonderful selection of Torani Syrups; they are more expensive than at Smart & Final but they carry flavors that Smart & Final doesn't so it's worth a look. If you like fancy, natural, organic, or ethnic teas this is the place for you. The canned teas will run you more than the boxed teas, but the prices are comparable to those at Lassens. They carry more flavors of hot chocolate than anywhere else i've seen in town. The ethnic food section is admirable, whether you like Asian, Indian, or Mediterranean foods there will be something here to set off your salivary glands and wake up your tastebuds. If you're looking for gluten-free products, they have some unusual ones, too. Around Christmas time the store transforms itself with ornaments, decorations, holiday comfort foods, and a variety of seasonal wonders. This last Christmas I found some pet supply products that I gave as gifts. My aunt's cats went crazy over the mackerel treats I purchased for them at Cost Plus. Unfortunately, they were seasonal items, so when she asked me if I could pick up some more, they were unobtainable. If you pick up anything seasonal like that, you might wish to pick it up in quantity since you won't see it on the shelves again for an entire year. They have a buyer loyalty program that I joined, but I'm still unclear exactly what the benefits are. Come down and check them out, you'll feel like you've brought a bit of the world home with you. read more

Wait a minute. Isn't there a Pier One across the parking lot? ... Oh this isn't Pier One?... What's the difference? Booze. Specifically, just beer and wine. The two are oddly similar. And oddly located so close to one another. But I suppose they have high paid marketing and logistic analyses teams looking at that stuff. So what do I know? World Market (Cost Plus World Market is just too damn long to say) is a place I never NEED to visit. I don't NEED stackable espresso cups, a fondue pot, an Indian throw rug, or Japanese paper lamp shades. Nobody does! But that doesn't stop me from buying them for others!! It's an easy one stop shop when purchasing gifts. Especially when you've run out of ideas. I mean, there's only so many bottles of booze you can give your boss and colleagues before they think you have a problem. But, if you're not quite to that level of questionability, the wine bags are located in the back left of the store. read more

Been here a couple times to get random items. This store is fun to browse -- you're bound to find some cute knick knacks, international foods & snacks. I've gotten items ranging from red velvet cupcake mix, do-it-yourself cupcake boxes, cute earrings, gift bags, thai chili pop chips, pumpkin ale, and other baked goods. There is so much variety in the store -- I usually spend at least 20+ minutes in there! This place is amazingly fun and affordable! I used to think world market was an expensive niche for gift givers and furniture/decor shoppers But man was I wrong, I needed a last minute gift on a budget, and I talked to the manager, Matt, and we went around the store together and chose a variety of items that were already on sale yet still really nice and high quality items, and we got me a custom made gift basket UNDER BUDGET really high quality items, and even higher quality customer service. After I had been shopping here more than once I was encouraged to join their "club" to accumulate points, which I did. Yesterday when I went shopping I dutifully put my phone number into the stand, inserted my card and waited while the cashier rang up my total. The purchases came to about $26. She then asked me to produce an ID. I was a little surprised since I had never been asked before, and because I was a club member so surely she would know ALL of my personal information was on file. I took out my Real ID driver's license and the cashier then requested I remove my credit card so that she could be sure the name on the driver license matched the name on the card! I was surprised because surely there is no record of me ever ripping off their store, I'm a regular customer with an account with them. But, giving her the benefit of the doubt I pulled out my card and let her examine, at length, both my ID and my platinum credit card. . . I thought to myself 1) Maybe it's a new policy? Never happened before. . . or 2) Maybe there's been a rash of bad credit cards lately? The cashier made no apologies for her due diligence. She acted like it was something she did every day to every customer, although it has never happened to me. She failed to thank me for co-operating. In short, she was treating me like I was suspicious, which when I got to my car, I realized was a pure mirco aggression. I mean consider for the moment the size of the transaction. Every time I've gotten a fraudulent charge on my card for less than $50 my card just pays it - they don't charge me. And then they turn my card off and send me a a replacement. So WTF on a $26 purchase by a repeat customer? If I were using a stolen card surely I would have bought something more substantial or more useful than a passel of exotic junk food. The more I thought about it, the more it bothered me. I did nothing to deserve that treatment. I'm an average looking middle aged woman of color, shopping without visible tattoos or odd piercings. I was neatly dressed and carry appropriate ID. As mentioned before ALL of my personal information, i.e. full name, birthdate, address and phone are already on file with them. I can only suppose they don't want my business, and intend to make checking out uncomfortable until I stop shopping there. read more

I just really freaking love Cost Plus World Market. I really, really do. This is one of the closer locations to me, so I frequent it more often than others. People usually ask -- what do you buy there? Well, here's my shopping list: Wine -- they have selections from different regions. Plus, they also sell Japanese Sake. Not the most extensive options, but they have options. Even if you're not the connoisseur, you'll find something. I just became a fan of the Cupcake brand white wines. Tea & Coffee -- They also have lots of options. AND -- if you're a member, you get special points for purchasing coffee that can earn you a freebie. Infused, Flavored Olive Oil -- Use it for dipping, cooking, what have you...it's effin delish. Chocolate -- Everyone knows (or IS) someone who's a chocolate lover. This is the place to get dark varieties (up to 70%) or uniquely flavored chocolate. Try the Mo's brand. They have a BACON CHOCOLATE flavor that gives me the giggles because it's so good! Some have one $ too many, so check out the CPWM brand too, which have better prices. Gifts - Do you have that friend that's just extremely difficult to shop for? Are they somewhat artsy? Maybe design savvy? Perhaps they're a world traveler? Are they foodies? Do they watch shows on Bravo, TLC or HGTV? If you answered yes, you might just find interesting trinkets gathered from all over the world that can comprise a little gift bag. I agree with previous reviews that this place is very similar to Pier 1 however; it's a little nicer and they have a more unique selection of items. They have lots of wonderful gifts in every price point you can imagine and they even have stuff for kids. I've found lots of wonderful windchimes and household items here that have lasted a long time. I love the wine selection for dinner parties. They have lots of wines that are found in restaurant's and other hard to find wines. I love finding wines on sale for gifts or special events. It's a real plus that they will make a gift basket for you, which is nice when your in a rush. The staff is great and it's a really relaxing hassle free place to shop for those unique odds and ends. read more

They have one of a kind cards, wrapping paper, all sorts of gifts, fun jewelry, cool art, good wine, and interesting goodies from all over the place. Honestly, this is a store I go to when I am bored (and perhaps I am bored a little too often in this town), just to meander and browse. First of all, this review is for an employee and not the store itself. I have been a long time customer and actual former employee of CPWM and have always loved this location and never had problems in the past. I realize this incident may just be due to poorly or too hastily trained seasonal hires, but it was unforgivable nonetheless. My boyfriend (also a former employee) and I were waiting in line to check out. We had a hand basket with about 10 items. We were next in line and the closest cashier to us, while helping another customer, proceeded to ignore the lady she was helping and loudly, in front of several people, ask my boyfriend, "are you going to pay for those?" Confused, because we were obviously in line to check out with a basket full of items, my boyfriend responded, "excuse me?" The cashier replied, "what's in your pocket?" My boyfriend had been standing with his free hand in his front sweatshirt pocket and replied, "it's my phone," and he even pulled it out and showed her. At this point anyone would expect an apology for the loud, public accusation but this cashier just put her head down and finally decided to pay attention to the customer right in front of her instead. We ended up going to the a different cashier to actually check out so we did not catch her name but we can describe her. She was about 5'7 with long black hair and tattoos along her forearms. This was only about an hour ago at 8:45 pm on December 1st. I realize we should have notified the manager right then and there but seeing as how it was late and we were tired from a long day, we just left. Upon further contemplation, we have both grown increasingly aggravated about the whole incident and decided that it was important for the company to know what kind of employee they have interacting with their customers. Someone who may even be costing them potential business. I'm not even going to go into specifics about how many policies weren't followed but mainly point out the complete lack of professionalism and common sense. No one likes to be accused of shoplifting and certainly not in front of several other employees and customers. This incident put a rather weighty damper on an otherwise very pleasant day. read more

How fun is this place right?! I definitely felt cultured and nostalgic on my first visit here. You can find chili from Spain, crackers from France, and even chips from Vietnam! I grew up eating most of the candies and goodies and beverages, so it was like walking down memory lane while shopping. They have a pretty huge selection of wine and beers too. Pros: Unique things, clean store, helpful service. The guy that runs the wine/beer section here is so friendly and helpful. He has a personal touch here and really takes a lot of pride in his stock and what they carry. That was very nice to see especially from a chain store. My mother comes here every year for their seasonal pumpkin beer. My husband and I love to wander here for an hour or so because their items are so random and unusual. Cons: They are a tad expensive and have some cheaply made items. You need to do some real shopping to get any good deals and buys here, but otherwise thats not much compared to the 'Pros' of this place. =) read more

I once in awhile am in need of something that tends to be on the more unique side and this place never fails me. Once I was making a tiramisu and no one had ladyfingers, really? But I called and sure enough the guy said they had one package left and he held it for me. Then when my go to local liquor store closed that carried specialty beers, well lo and behold they carried my favorite. This place ceases to amaze me on delivering on all my weird items with super customer service. Because I did call ahead and ask for these items and when I was told it was in stock they were happy to hold it for me too. Not only do they deliver on my odd item but this is one of those stores that I have a hard time leaving without a full cart. Fabulous housewares, decor, fashion item and great wines, beer and food. I definitely love that "well travelled" look--you know, those people who have been all over the world and have lots of great tchotchkes and furniture in their home... First word of warning, things are pretty pricey here, BUT you should never buy anything full price. If you can wait and you're willing to risk the item you want going out of stock, just be patient! EVERYTHING they have goes on sale at one point or another. Plus, if you get on their mailing list, they'll send you coupons for stuff. I've certainly bought stuff full price here, but like I said before, I wasn't willing to wait or risk it. But, for those who are willing to wait, CPWM will bestow upon you AWESOME DEALS! I love World Market. In fact, I love it so much that I have to space out my visits, lest I go bankrupt. The jewelry, the gift wrap, the bath products, the cups, the plates, the furniture, the lamps-- it's all gold. I particularly am a fan of the food and wine section. TIP: They've got premade gift baskets of all different prices, ready to go if you need an easy, although somewhat impersonal gift. Also, they'll make up any gift basket you want, wrap it, etc. One thing worth noting: while World Market is cool because they've got stuff from all over the world in one store, realize you are paying an insane markup for the luxury. I am fortunate enough to be a world traveler and I regularly see stuff at World Market that I've seen in little tourist markets across the world. Now, you might say that's a good thing, but here's my point. I bought a mirror in Peru for $3 at a little tourist market. One of my favorite weekend stops, you might say I have a problem. I always thought they were just a furniture store, but they really offer so much more! For example, this Sunday I left with some new dishes, face masks for my daughter & I, Halloween decor & pasta. They don't always have sales, but if you become a member, free of charge, they do send you some coupons via email. We were looking for a product we could no longer find in the store asked for assistance and not only did they look it up, search for it in the back but also offered to take our information and call us after they receive the next shipment to let us know if they got more in.
