Absolutely delicious omakase. Highly recommend for a date when you just want to be served amazing food.
Inspired choice with excellent host and wait staff. Indoor and outdoor seating available. Focused menu with both land and sea protein options. Sushi was fresh and everything we ordered generously portioned. Highly recommend.
Fish and plant forward sushi restaurant Wrench & Rodent Seabasstropub is serving omakase and a creative dinner menu Wednesday thru Sunday 4-9pm in an eclectic indoor, outdoor setting. Staff were friendly, super helpful, and knowledgeable about their dishes. Tables were full and I chose to carry out instead, FOOD Aside from execution of the 3/5 rice seasoning and gelatinization (firm) that could be improved, I did appreciate the creativity of their dry aged/cured options: 4.5/5 Opah Belly Bacon Nigiri (2pc) - flavorfully cured (w brown sugar?) with a distinct texture akin to bacon, seared, garnished with miso 4/5 15-Day Dry Aged Kanpachi Nigiri (2pc) Rich fish with a black powder that didn't quite provide the pop/contrast in flavor
This is some of the most interesting and best sushi I have ever had. Thankfully, there was no rodent listed on the menu. It takes guts to put the word "rodent" in the name of your restaurant. I am sure there is a backstory here, but like most people, I do not want to think of rodents while I am eating. The place itself is funky. There is a skull over there, huge murals inside and outside, rock music on the sound system, etc. I am sure children are welcome but the menu is geared toward adults with adventurous palates. There is no California roll or chicken teriyaki here for kids or very picky eaters. I was tempted to try the omakase ($95 per person) but the recent mixed reviews made me gunshy. Instead, we went with many of our server's helpful suggestions, including off the daily specials menu. The Hedgehog roll (krab, shrimp tempura, seared yellowtail, truffle oil), which almost everyone gets, might be my favorite roll of all time. It is very rich but I probably could have eaten three of those rolls myself. The Del Mar roll (krab, shrimp tempura, tuna, avocado, jalopenos) was good but not amazing. Off the specials menu, we tried fish rib karaage, which was fantastic. Who even knew fish had ribs? These had a slim rib bone but I could have eaten a thousand of them. Finally, we tried another roll (tuna nigiri) with yuzu cream and a limequat chutney which had a sweet and sour punch. I found the chutney a little too sour for my taste but it was a very creative and interesting dish. Our service was perfect. They have parking for about four cars along the side of the restaurant. This is the kind of restaurant which makes you want to return to try different things, and I would absolutely eat that hedgehog again, provided that hedgehogs are not in the rodent family.
Such creative fresh food despite being a bit thrown off by the name. We were lucky to be able to walk in and snag some seats before things got really busy on a Saturday night. Service was friendly, kitchen food came out fast though sushi took a bit longer. Loved the fresh yellowtail and the veggies and yummy sauce it came with, the fish rib karaage (loved the light batter, meaty fish, and dipping sauce!) veggies (broccoli w bacon, and roasted cauliflower). Both had sauces that were so tasty! Sushi was pretty good. Rainbow roll and a specialty roll with chili garlic and tempura shrimp had great textures and flavors. The John dory had a gummy texture though, which I wasn't a fan of but was nice to try. Overall was happy with the meal and would recommend and revisit again if in the area!
We made reservations on Open Table, but I am not sure if we needed to. They have a lot of seating, inside and outside. We arrived around 8:40pm on a Saturday night and there were people inside and many others showing up about the same time as us. They close or have last seating at 9pm, with kitchen taking last orders at 9:30. Bar & desserts stay open past that. We were there until just before 10:30. I was most impressed that they were so accommodating and willing to help us all (7) sit together. We waited a short while and they took drink orders while we waited. The place is easy to hang out and chat. The friendliness of the staff kept our wait comfortable. We ordered the cauliflower and Patrick the Great roll for starters. The cauliflower is absolutely amazing!! These were the perfect choices to get started. We ordered 5 additional rolls and shared. The Hedgehog roll was my favorite. That truffle oil made all the difference and was incredibly delicious. The rainbow roll, green lantern and Hawaiian rolls were also ordered, but Hedgehog and PTG were my favorites. The drinks were good and they use a citrus salt that is so nice. I really like salt to begin with and the citrus add is a great idea. Do not be turned off my the name, be intrigued and you will be happy you gave them a try. What lead us to W&R was seeing them listed on the InKind app. We are so glad to have tried this place out and receiving the added benefit of the InKind bonus.
Stopped by here while traveling. The location has ample parking which made the arrival easy. However, the dining experience was hit or miss mostly miss. The Omakase felt very experimental. Many of the sushi toppings were awkward and didn't seem to complement the fish. The dry-aged tuna was particularly disappointing the flavor profile was so strange that it was hard to swallow. The other dishes was okay I understand they are trying to be "different" and "edgy," but for me, the execution was lacking. It's a very unique spot but I wouldn't return for the sushi.
We made a reservation and were seated in the middle private section away from others. Had a girls night here to try the omakase. Recommended by a friend who came a while back when they newly opened and also came again with us. She said the omakase was a great value for the price, but this time around we all felt the omakase was experimental and unique. We tried the omakase menu. There was a mix of hot and cold dishes. Everything came out quite slowly, maybe because there were 6 of us. My favorite dishes were the nigiri's. They repeated the same type of fish often though, would have been nice with a larger variety. The dishes were definitely unique and they seemed to enjoy experimenting with different flavors. It was a unique experience. It wasn't too bad for the price.
Amazing hospitality and amazing food. From their creativity of making tuna prosciutto to creating amazingly fresh locally sourced dry aged nigiri, I was blown away by everything they do here. The restaurant is spacious and you can see visibly where they dry aged their fish to their cured meats fridge. The team there is very knowledgeable and would highly recommend if someone's looking for a unique and delicious date spot.
I came here 10 years ago and wasn't a fan. Came here last night with my friend and had a way different experience. We got nigiri, the half friend and half raw fish, negitoro hand rolls, the green lantern roll, and the hedgehog roll. We really liked everything! The half and half fish was AMAZING. The only complaint is kind of similar to my original review - the salmon nigiri had sugar on it . I wish it didn't - also wish that was specified on the menu so we could have just ordered it without it. I think if that was on the menu, it would be better so people can choose whether they want that or not. BUT overall wayyyyyy more impressed this time around and I will definately be back. This place is probably the best place in Oceanside for sushi. Super fresh and creative!
Gabe has been our waiter the last two times and he's the sweetest guy. My daughter mentioned having a sunburn on her lips from a long day at the beach. After taking our order, he sent someone to buy an aquaphor from the store and brought it to our table. WHAT??? Then they brought us a special dish on the house just because we waited to be seated for a few minutes after our reservation time - which we didn't even mind, let alone mention. We've been to sushi restaurants around the world (including Japan) and this is in our top 2. You'll find menu items here you can't find anywhere else and the vibe is fantastic. The dishes are creative but not just for the sake of being different - they're actually delicious. I'm not giving you specifics because you can't go wrong, so just pick what calls out to you and enjoy the ride.
this place has definitely elevated my sushi eating experience! its a very unassuming place but if you look around carefully, there are gems everywhere and keep your ears open too because the playlist is very diverse. we went with the Omakase menu because... why not? tired of the typical rolls and basic sashimi? Omakase for the absolute win! they present you with the menu for the day because it is chef's choice and, for me, did not disappoint. I'm not even going to try to tell you the names of what we had but it was all wonderful and the ones that were not the favorite had nothing to do with the fish itself but with personal taste and preference. the pairing of the sauces, fresh ingredients and fresh fish had my tastebuds pleasantly surprised with every dish. because i'm nosey, i did look at other's rolls and they looked amazing. if i wasn't so full and about an 45min drive from home, i would have ordered a hedgehog roll to go. Gabe, our server, was amazing! super attentive, knowledgeable and personable. he came across as a genuinly kind person and i haven't had an outstanding server like him in a long time. the Omakase is about 6 dishes. Gabe explained each dish as they came out and checked in on us after probably 5 out of 6 dishes to get our feedback. keep it up Gabe!
Taking risks in the food world can go terribly wrong. I mean catering to the general consensus helps gurantee patronage. The chef at Rodent and Wrench takes risks and it was quite successful. You would think sashimi is sashimi, right? The chef here was inventive in his pairing of fish to each flavor. First and foremost, all fish used in our omakase course were of the freshest quality, from the Japanese fish offerings to even a local species. Among my favorites were the sashimi paired with melon, and strawberry. Something about the sweet and salty was just so delicious. I wanted more. The one dish that I really wanted to like was the deep fried Aiji. It was served in whole with Kimchee. I found it challenging removing the bones and wished I had a plate to do so. The Kimchee was delicious. But overall, I enjoyed the courses very much. The selection of Japanese Beers and fun cocktails was cool. I found myself wanting to try multiple drinks. I favored the Japanese amber ale. Too bad I had the last one of the night. Cocktails are a must here. The restaurant is industrial in theme and made for steam punk vibe. They had street view seating in the front and tables on the patio. The metal animals of the sea added to the vibe as well. Just a nice casual place to kick back and have great rolls. As for the service it was good for the most part but uneven. Our main guy Dillon was great and he was good at explaining each dish. But then some people would just drop the food off without a word. Verdict: Come for the fresh fish and inventive flavor pairings. I know I will.
Went here last night for dinner and I loved it! I had a friend who would rave about this place and I totally get it. The vibe inside is cool and our server Shayla was very nice! My friend got the special that day which included figs from their tree in the back (so cool) tuna, and feta cheese. It looked amazing. We shared the Albacore ngiri/sashimi with some crunchy garlic chili and wow so good. I got the hedgehog roll and loved it. Very fresh! I cannot wait to come back! read more

I wanted to like this place, but overall I left pretty underwhelmed. The sake was only available in one size, which was a little annoying. We also ordered the Kyoto Mule, but the ice was already watered down and the drink came without a straw. Ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce had to be requested, which felt odd for a sushi restaurant. The saba wasn't for me personally, although it did seem properly prepared. The cut rolls were also sliced into such massive pieces that they were genuinely difficult to eat in one bite. I do want to give credit to our server, Liam. He was nice and I appreciated him, but I do think he could have been a little more involved in guiding the experience, especially with a menu like this where some of the items may need a bit more explanation. On top of everything, the restaurant was extremely warm and the air conditioning seemed basically nonexistent. There are some good ideas here, but the overall experience lacked attention to detail. For the price point, I expected much better. They could definitely do better. read more
Our friends and I had a double date here. The food was excellent. My husband got the omakase. I was able to try some of it. So good! I also ordered the green lantern, hedgehog, seared swordfish and a salad. The sushi was amazing. The prices are high but we will definitely come back for special occasions. The reason for 4 stars is with such an expensive this place, there is no a/c. They have a patio in the front right next to the main road (didn't look like somewhere I'd want to sit), a dining area inside and a back patio that looked kind of nice but I didn't check it out. With no a/c on a very hot day, they had the doors open and fans blowing hot air. The flies were annoying. They did bring a spinner but it only helped so much. But overall the food was amazing! read more

So freakin delicious! Oceanside has really come up in the last decade. Wrench and Rodent was one of the places that entered into the beauty and gentrification of South O. They have an interesting name - but don't let it dissuade you because the food is ridiculously good. Prices have increased but it's with the times. About $22 for specialty rolls, including the Hedgehog, but it's worth it. I used to love the ceviche flight, and sometimes they offer it if they have availability but it's not part of the menu. Brought my rambunctious child, and the staff was accommodating. We ordered a kids version of chicken and rice, and it was elevated and yummy. A lot of food. My kid really liked it. They have beers and wine available. It's a nice date night. They also take reservations as well. read more

Amazing idea it is, a seabasstropub. Parking was behind the restaurant, we found one spot on a Friday night. Slight wait, even though we had reservation. Ambiance is pretty neat, fish heads, skulls everywhere. It has this hippie-fish monger, low effort yet cool decoration style. But food is where it falls short. Sushi/Nigiri are surely not authentic, but it feels a bit forced. The ocean wing (hibachi collar) had too much sauce on it. The ceviche was mostly nachos. The century egg, I would try that at an asian place, was bland. The half and half, a beautifully plated fish, half deep fried and half raw, amazing concept, if the fish was fresh. It was not. I am the person who eat raw fish (and raw beef) dishes all the time and i love them. The half and half was wrong. Fish was not fresh, the sauce was intense and over powering. And too acidic and too conflicting. I felt like the fish was killed twice. read more

If you think sushi is just sushi, think again,Wrench & Rodent is next-level fine dining in the heart of Oceanside! And Jack? Absolute rockstar. From the warm smile at the door to spot-on recommendations, he made our night unforgettable. Special #1 (albacore + black pepper cabbage + garlic chili sashimi) = crunchy, bold, and totally different in the best way. Steelhead trout with figs + balsamic = sweet & savory magic I never knew I needed in my life. Green Lantern Roll = sauce game STRONG, just the right kick to make you happy dance. Hawaiian Roll = all the extra "umfff" your taste buds dream about. Jack nailed it with every recommendation--20/10 service, 12/10 flavor. Wrench & Rodent isn't just a sushi spot, it's an experience you don't want to miss. Oceanside, you're spoiled with this gem! And don't even get me started on the cobbler... it was pure comfort, almost home-style, cozy yum-yum goodness to end the night on the sweetest note. read more

I'll start by saying I rarely write Yelp reviews, but our experience was so good I had to compliment them publicly. We celebrated our 6th anniversary last night and decided to come here, having only been once a few years ago. We both agreed that the Hedgehog roll was one of the best sushi rolls we had ever had! The food as a whole was absolutely incredible, I would give them 5 stars just for the food. The staff were friendly, and they gave us a complimentary glass of sparkling rosé for our anniversary which was unexpected and delicious! My only side note is that our table was outside (I love the backyard vibe) and I think we were near some plants that had been freshly fertilized because there was an unpleasant smell - but everything else made the smell not matter at all. I will be highly recommending this place to anyone who likes sushi. read more

Service and vibe were amazing. All the workers were very friendly and helpful especially when asking about recommendations. Came in with my boyfriend for his birthday and they had a complementary bread pudding dessert for his birthday! We had the omakase which was $95 each and had a cocktail and a mocktail, surprisingly they can do a mocktail of all their current cocktails so that was great! Omakase overall was okay, there were some standout fish like their mai dai, black cod and Shima aji, but it definitely felt like for me it would've been better to order individually. I wasn't much of a fan of the other courses but it wasn't a bad experience! read more

Absolutely loved everything we got but nothing beats the Green Lantern roll!! It had this sweet sauce and they sprinkled finishing salt on top which made the whole roll feel very well rounded and hit all notes on your flavor palette. We're so happy a friend recommended this place to us. We will definitely be back. read more

1/15/2026 Omakase. Should be called ohmasucky. Food started off good but wasn't anything special. Then we got served a single shrimp atop a bed of greens and cocktail sauce. Really? Is this a joke? The topper was a slice of fish atop 4 tater tots!!! Wtf! 95.00 per person and so not worth it. No culinary expertise this evening and nothing like some of the other pics people have posted. Restaurant is a bit of a drive for me coming from Mira Mesa but its worth it. Parking is a hassle when it's busy around the area but if you're lucky you might score a spot behind the restaurant. 2nd time here. Service was ok. Kid kept forgetting our order but he was nice enough to comp us some things. Food and soju based cocktails were delicious. I would definitely be back just for the Whole fish and fried rice. I'm actually not sure how this place can get less than five stars. I've been eyeing this restaurant for quite some time and finally dropped in during the week without a reservation. All of the staff were Incredible and the vibes were amazing. We had the special of the day being the yellowtail which was incredible. My husband ordered the chronic roll and the yakisoba which were also amazing. I'm not typically a fan of tempura rolls but these were so good. The cocktails were a perfect balance and we even had the pleasure of trying some chef recommendations. If you do go do yourself a favor and order the albacore, I was a true albacore hater until I tried this one. Safe to say we'll be back. Probably more often than I'd care to admit. WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW This place was amazing!!! Every aspect of the food was delicious!!!! Every sauce, fish and every morsel of rice was melt in your mouth fricken outrageously yummy!!! We scooped up every bit of sauce off every plate! Read some previous reviews that they considered this place pricey.... No way!!! We spent a bit more than a normal every day run of the mill sushi place that is NO WAY as fresh and innovative as here. Service was great, never had an empty plate on our table for more than 2 min before someone cleared it off. Timing of each dish was precise. Will we return? No doubt!!! May even try to go back tonight if we can get a reservation. Treat yourself and go ASAP! read more
Food wasn't all that bad, it just wasn't all that great. Nice presentation of the food, low lit atmosphere to help create that kinda "interesting atmosphere". All the servers were very friendly and experienced when asked questions on their menu items. Like I said, food had great presentation, it just lacked some deep or interesting flavor. I'm not knocking the place, judging by the clientele you can clearly tell it has O'sides trendy clients going there to eat. If you're not there to eat just sushi then your entree selection is pretty limited. read more
absolutely fabulous. would eat here every day if i was rich. really well done flavors paired with their nigiri. staff was friendly and welcoming. the overall vibe was also immaculate except some of the art was lowkey scary (jk). can't wait to come again! try their kanpachi nigiri and tokyo sunshine cocktail.
