Salt Point is an unsung gem of the Northern California coast - incredible to believe that this…read moreplace wasn't completely teeming with people during our mid-July trip, but we probably encountered fewer an 20 people on the Salt Point Trail. We were staying in Woodside Campground, but had free entrance into Gerstle Cove Campground and access to the coastline. This is where Salt Point Trail begins. Prepare for the deteriorating visitor center and closed bathrooms by arriving ready to go with map in hand. We disembarked around noon and spent about 3.5 hours meandering through the bluffs and tidepools to Stump Beach and back. This is with someone averaging about a mile an hour & using a hiking pole. Everyone had a great time and gratefully no injuries or nuisances occurred! After a late lunch break, I went back to Stump Beach and continued the hike to Fisk Mill Cove - this area is currently closed, but the Bluff Trail from Stump Beach is accessible with some light bushwhacking. I wore jeans and hiking shoes to avoid the poison oak; always remember to check for ticks. The views are entirely worth some lite prep and effort. Enjoy!

A few things to take into consideration before you go: there is no water, garbage cans (you pack out your own trash), you leave your car in parking lot and carry your gear in (wagons are super helpful), and no cell service. That being said it's pretty nice being off the grid for a few days. And really great for the kids to play in nature without electronics. All the sites are beautiful- some up a hill or across a creek bridge. I prefer not to carry my gear up a hill and have my tent on a flat space. You cannot reserve spots in advance- day of only. The campground also has the Pomo Canyon trail which leads to Shell Beach (maybe 5 miles of hiking). The grandkids were quite happy exploring the campground trails and creek. Campsites come with a picnic table & fire ring. There are a couple pit toilets in the campground (stinky of course). Yet this is a beautiful place- I'd say it's very peaceful & zen.

That was my thought when the girlfriend & I visited the Pomo Canyon Environmental Campground on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Nestled into the edge of a redwood grove, it's hard not to wonder because of how this place looks now that the campground is closed. It's been closed for a year now. Already the paths & the clearings for the camp sites are covered in a thick layer of detritus from the trees above. It's eerily silent. Like a ghost town without the town, only picnic tables, fire pits & a few outhouses. It felt like a glimpse into our post-Apocalyptic future. Who knows? Maybe the Mayans were right. Eh, probably my imagination getting the best of me. Anyway, even with the campground closed, there are still some nice, fern-lined trails that meander through the beautiful redwoods. Because the campground is closed, the gravel road leading to it is also closed. There's very limited parking back at the road & it's a short hike in. We explored the area a while in complete solitude & headed back for the car before it got dark. For a walk in the woods with absolutely no one else around, this is it. The Pomo Canyon Environmental Campground may be closed but it is, nonetheless, a good starting point for nice hikes in redwoods. It's also a place that may make you wonder what the world will be like without us.

We tent camped at Wright's Beach for two nights in late May. The high temperatures were around 60…read moredegrees; the low temperatures were around 50 degrees. The ground was so hard in our campsite that we were unable to stake our tent and just left it unstaked. For tent camping, you must use your rainfly because everything gets wet at night. At night, pack as much back into you car as you can to keep it dry. If you can't do that, then put things under the picnic table to keep off some of the water, fold up your camp chairs so the seats don't get as wet, and cover stuff with tarps if you can. There is a camp host selling firewood ($13/bundle or two bundles for $25) from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. There are lots of birds trying to get at your food. In the morning our vinyl tablecloth was wet and covered with muddy bird footprints. The bathrooms are the best I've seen at any campground. Individual bathrooms/stalls, fully stocked with seat liners and toilet paper (and hot water!), but no soap or towels to dry your hands. All in all, it was a fun and different camping trip. You are steps from the ocean. But, for tent campers, be prepared for cold and wet.

We enjoy getting chowder and sipping it while watching the waves. It is such a tranquil sight away from the hustle and bustle of life. Today was a beautiful sunny day at Bodega Head but even if it's raining, I love coming here to enjoy the views. Come prepared for some windy conditions just in case. The parking lot will get full on the weekends, especially during spring when you have a better chance of seeing whales. Several picnic tables available with friendly seabirds checking out what you're eating. Restrooms are next to the parking lot.

Goat Rock side no dogs allowed because the seals always wean their pups on the beach, but the dog friendly side is so spacious and a nice long stretch of beach with iconic rock arches out in the water that you will never forget. In my opinion, one of the most beautiful places in all of California and if it is low tide, there will be many starfish visible on the rock formations on shore lower section which is normally submerged! If you get a good sunset, this place cannot be beat for photos overlooking the water with those rock formations. It could make anyone with a cell phone camera take photos that look like a professional landscape photographer took them.

This is one of my favorite campgrounds I've ever been to!!! Kelly and Mikal treat their guests like family. From the first time I called Kelly was so kind and helpful. I have been numerous times now and it feels like going to a little slice of heaven each time. It's clean, beautiful, quiet, and they live on site so if there's an issue they are there to help! The sites are spread out and spacious so you won't have someone right on top of you. The sites are kept up so nicely and the campground itself is simply gorgeous. The bathrooms are clean, there are several free showers, and there is firewood for sale as well. The town of Guerneville itself is only five minutes away, and there are tons of cute little shops as well as a major grocery store. There are darling little art galleries, clothing stores, bakeries, ice cream shops, coffee shops, etc. The ocean is only a 25 minute drive down the road. There are endless little beaches to stop at, as well as numerous little beachside towns with restaurants and coffee shops. You can spend a whole day exploring highway 1, then head back to your campsite to relax. I feel so lucky to only live 3 hours away and be able to head there any time I want. I'm so grateful to Kelly and Mikal for being so accommodating and kind.

A bonus with this campsite were the showers and they were hot! Good bathrooms too with flushable toilets. Just remember to bring enough quarters for the showers. The best small hikes next to the campsite and one of them even went down to a beach area! I would say this was one of my favorite campsites to stay at and we will definitely be coming back to explore some more!

March 15-18, 2025 We…read morestayed in Site 76, which is close to the bay. You could see the bay from our campsite, and the road that runs around the bay. The park backs up to some private residences along the bay road. So it was not exactly rustic and peaceful, but it was still a nice place to hang out for a few days. As long as you can tune out the foghorn, you'll be okay. If that kind of thing bothers you (it would have driven me crazy in my younger years), then you best be as far from the bay as you can get. The foghorn sounds every 10 seconds, fog or no fog, 24/7. Most of the campsites have plenty of room, but some are better and more spacious than others. You can hike the dune trail from the campground (no dogs allowed, but watch for horses). We drove to the parking lot at the beach area, and walked down to the beach. It seemed nice, but it was windy and a bit rainy, so I didn't spend much time checking it out. Besides, I'm more interested in dog-friendly beaches. I'm sure that the campground has a totally different feel during the summer months, but in March, there was not much activity. We were one of the few campers in our campground loop, so very low key. Bathrooms and showers were clean. Tokens are needed for the shower. The token machine accepts dollar bills. Special Notes: No dogs allowed on the trails or on the beach. Motorhomes are limited to 31 feet. There is an RV water filling and dump station. As for the dune trails, I thought I could hike to the beach from the campground. But I hiked the trail to the road, crossed the road, and then the trail branched off onto several different pathways, all which ended abruptly. So I don't recommend it, at least not in March. May be a bit different in summer. Overall, this state park is a decent home base for exploring Bodega Bay and the Sonoma Coast.

That's just silly. 'Murica!!! But people do that and I'm not concerned with it. It's location, location, location here. If you aren't in your motorized shell, the ocean can be heard at night and cool breezes can be felt. Or shack up in your tin can on wheels and "enjoy!" Really, it's a short drive from the bay, or even from the greater Sacramento area so sure, bring it all! Leave the oppressive heat and wear pants for a change. Bring shoes and maybe take a hike...leave the extra car at home. Maybe bring some food items with you. The stores are expensive and have great seafood but they aren't meant to supply for longer stays.

A state park with a good amount of redwood trees albeit mostly smaller/younger ones due to a good…read moreamount of logging done in this area to help build California in the 20th century. It is near the Russian River just outside of Guerneville. Redwood vibes similar to some parts of the Santa Cruz range or Marin Hills, but nothing that compares to the big redwoods in Northern California like near Humbolt Co or Crescent City, those are next level. There's a fee to park inside the park. Think it was about $10. It gets busy during the weekends and spaces can be super limited if you come after 11am. We were with a toddler, so we stayed on the main flat trails that go through redwood groves. It is very shady and well trafficked trails. There are a few loops you can join together, and the circumference may be a 2-3 mile hike. But you can do however long you want it to be. Now the trails that elevate into the hills are much more involved. It can elevate to a 1300 foot gain which is pretty strenuous. I haven't tried those yet but it is on my list to try. But even the easy trails that one day, was still beautiful and relaxing. To majestic red bark trees with healthy ferns all on the ground cover, fallen trees to climb on, large rocks to hop on was just a nice jaunt especially with young kids. We brought a light lunch and refreshments and were able to run into a small area with picnic benches. Perfect way to end a few hours steeped in nature, without having to be totally in the wild. Great intro for those that aren't too versed (yet) and to get them exposed to nature, ecosystems and wildlife. Connect with the world amongst which you live with but rarely see. Weekend mission accomplished!

We stayed in an RV site and had an enjoyable time overall. One thing to note is that pricing trends on the higher side, especially if you have more than the standard four people in your group. However, there are several convenient amenities available, including on-site propane fills, firewood delivery, and four EV charging stations. The EV chargers were particularly convenient and cost about $30 for an 8-hour charging session. The campground does an excellent job creating activities for younger children. Between the jump pad, animals to feed, movie nights, ice cream socials, river access, basketball courts, and open spaces to play, it's easy to see why families come here in big numbers. Teenagers may find there are fewer activities specifically geared toward their age group, but there is still plenty to keep them occupied. My two teenage children had never kayaked before, and renting kayaks on the Russian River ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. The shower and restroom facilities were also very clean and well-maintained. We only used the shower facility near the beach access area, but it was in excellent condition. Showers are coin-operated and cost four quarters for six minutes, with each additional quarter adding 1.5 minutes of shower time. The general store was well-stocked with camping essentials, and the staff we interacted with were friendly and helpful. One thing I appreciated was the variety of camping options available. Whether you're looking for a simple tent site, a full-hookup RV site, a group area, or a more upgraded setup with amenities like gazebos and BBQs, there seems to be something for just about every style of camper and budget. Our site had full hookups, and everything worked as expected. For those staying in sites without sewer connections, there are convenient dump stations on the property. River access is one of the campground's strongest features. Getting down to the Russian River is easy, and the shoreline has a very gradual, shallow entry that makes it especially appealing for families with younger children. As always, parents should supervise their kids around water, but there is plenty of room for children to play and explore safely. AT&T cell service was excellent throughout our stay. The campground also offers free Wi-Fi, although we never needed to use it. This is definitely a family-oriented campground. Thursday night was peaceful, quiet, and relaxing. Once the weekend crowd arrived on Friday, the atmosphere became much more active. One thing future visitors should be aware of is the large number of children riding bikes and moving throughout the campground. Drivers and pedestrians alike should stay alert, as kids frequently dart across roads and campsites. We also found that quiet hours were not enforced as strictly as advertised. Beginning around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, groups of children were already riding bikes and making enough noise to wake nearby campers. Sunday morning was somewhat better--perhaps everyone was a little more tired after a busy weekend--but it was still noticeably louder than what we expected during posted quiet hours. Overall, Casini Ranch knows exactly what it is: a family campground. If you're looking for a quiet, adults-focused camping experience, a busy summer weekend may not be the best fit. If you're bringing children and want easy river access, clean facilities, plenty of activities, and a campground that caters to families, it's easy to see why so many people return year after year. Despite a few frustrations with early morning noise, we had a great stay and would happily come back. I would still rate it 5 out of 5 stars.
