March 15-18, 2025 We stayed in Site 76, which is close to the bay. You could see the bay from our campsite, and the road that runs around the bay. The park backs up to some private residences along the bay road. So it was not exactly rustic and peaceful, but it was still a nice place to hang out for a few days. As long as you can tune out the foghorn, you'll be okay. If that kind of thing bothers you (it would have driven me crazy in my younger years), then you best be as far from the bay as you can get. The foghorn sounds every 10 seconds, fog or no fog, 24/7. Most of the campsites have plenty of room, but some are better and more spacious than others. You can hike the dune trail from the campground (no dogs allowed, but watch for horses). We drove to the parking lot at the beach area, and walked down to the beach. It seemed nice, but it was windy and a bit rainy, so I didn't spend much time checking it out. Besides, I'm more interested in dog-friendly beaches. I'm sure that the campground has a totally different feel during the summer months, but in March, there was not much activity. We were one of the few campers in our campground loop, so very low key. Bathrooms and showers were clean. Tokens are needed for the shower. The token machine accepts dollar bills. Special Notes: No dogs allowed on the trails or on the beach. Motorhomes are limited to 31 feet. There is an RV water filling and dump station. As for the dune trails, I thought I could hike to the beach from the campground. But I hiked the trail to the road, crossed the road, and then the trail branched off onto several different pathways, all which ended abruptly. So I don't recommend it, at least not in March. May be a bit different in summer. Overall, this state park is a decent home base for exploring Bodega Bay and the Sonoma Coast. read more

Interesting to see folks bring out a dorm room on wheels and consider that "camping." Come on man...that's glamping at best. And if you drag a vehicle with your mobile dorm room? That's just silly. 'Murica!!! But people do that and I'm not concerned with it. It's location, location, location here. If you aren't in your motorized shell, the ocean can be heard at night and cool breezes can be felt. Or shack up in your tin can on wheels and "enjoy!" Really, it's a short drive from the bay, or even from the greater Sacramento area so sure, bring it all! Leave the oppressive heat and wear pants for a change. Bring shoes and maybe take a hike...leave the extra car at home. Maybe bring some food items with you. The stores are expensive and have great seafood but they aren't meant to supply for longer stays. read more

We camped at Bodega Dunes several times over the summer, trying out different sites throughout the campground. We don't recommend sites that are sandy, like #7 that we stayed at and is pictured here, so we found it's worth it to walk around to see which sites to reserve in the future. It's an easy walk to the beach, the camp hosts sell firewood at a reasonable price, and the showers have nice hot water. read more

Love the campground, been going there every year for over 20 years. The conditions of the campground have declined substantially over the years. the only restroom on our favorite loop has been under repair for over a year, and it looks to be only half done. Not much noticeable progress on it since last year. in place of it they provide portable units that they only empty once a week or not at all. Really too bad because we really love the campground. This state needs to do better. read more

My boyfriend & I just stayed at the Bodega Dunes and loved it so much! It was so tranquil and mellow, I can't wait to go back. The access to the state beach being in the same campground vicinity was a great touch. The woman at check-in suggested we watch the sunset on the beach and it honestly was the highlight of the trip! The bathrooms were clean and there were showers you could use as well. My suggestion is to make sure to bring your own hand soap for the bathroom since there isn't any in there. A lot of campgrounds are like that - so it wasn't a big deal to me. I just like to mention it incase some people expect that to be in there. Highly recommend! read more

We decided to book a last minute camping trip to bodega bay and this spot was available online , we had been here before so we said why not? Upon arrival we were greeted by a park ranger who we showed our reservation to and he gave us a paper to put on our windshield. We found our campsite quickly, upon arrival I noticed how much sand there was which is to be expected considering we are near the beach. Campsite 36 is a perfect spot for a family with children. It has a lot of space and also has a lot of trees nearby. The bathroom is a 3 minute walk which is ideal during the day but definetly not ideal at night when it is pitch black outside. The showers are located where the barhrooms are. You pay for a token that you use for the shower. Unfortunately they were closed this time around. There are a couple trails nearby but I would not recommend them to an average person, one must be an experienced hiker to do those. You have to drive to the nearby beach which is unfortunate but it is a lovely private beach. The beach is beautiful! Overall this is a nice campground. They sell wood on the campground or you can get some across the street from a local that sells it, read more

A very meh stay at Bodega Dunes. We were in site 44 and basically camping in someone's backyard. The equestrian trail divided our site from private residences right behind us! This loop has tons of big trees, so be prepared run your generators too. One positive is that the sites were spaced out pretty well, so you weren't in your neighbors business and vice versa. The dump station was closed. Our friends stayed at Doran the year before and said that was much better (on the water). I'll be reserving that next time. read more

We stayed at site 70 for 1 night. Our site was clean and we were able to enjoy the views of the bay across the road. What I loved about the campground is that the bathrooms had hot water (not the ice cold or barely lukewarm water you typically find at campgrounds). The restrooms had flush toilets and were clean. The showers were also conveniently located behind the bathrooms. No bear boxes (no bears, ha!), but there's a wooden shed to store food and other essentials. There's a standard fire pit and picnic table as well. The campground isn't very far at all from civilization (we were right next to a road), so if you're looking to disconnect, this might not be for you. But if you're looking for a convenient spot to explore the area, this is a good site. Minus 1 star because someone stole our firewood while we were away for the day :( read more

This was my first time camping in California and my first time camping in several years. Overall, I was very happy with our experience. My son and I stayed here for 3 nights during the week. I was able to reserve a specific campsite about 2 months in advance. Site #91 is very spacious and private. The only other site we saw or heard was across the road. We were surrounded by trees so lots of shade. We were close to two restrooms/showers--one of them is right behind the site through a short trail. We both felt the campground was very relaxing. Lots of families (there were children being loud but they quieted down by 9) and a good community throughout. The only two negatives for me were 1) no soap in the bathrooms and 2) that fog horn goes off every 10 seconds--seriously. The first night I heard it but I slept fine. The second night I don't remember hearing it. But the third night I had difficulties sleeping because of it. It's more like a far away sound but you still hear it sometimes and if you're prone to being a light sleeper--be aware. read more

We have camped with a group of friends at this spot every summer for several years and it has always been exceptional, but this year there were some real misses by park staff/maintenance that are a little hard to forgive or forget. The bathrooms were not well maintained (urinals overflowing, no TP in any restroom as of Saturday morning) and the showers at our closest bathroom were out of service. The token machines were not dispensing tokens for the showers and the next closest bathroom only had 2 out of 3 showers working. Noise was a factor as well. There are two camp hosts but apparently only one host is on duty at any given time. This meant that the upper campground had on-site assistance and it was a little more rogue at the other campground, noisy at night and lots of trucks showing up late in the evening to poach unclaimed spots. The site next to ours was poached and the group started their evening at 10:30, well after quiet hours began at 10pm. Lots of dogs off leash (dangerous for horses and horse riders), loud groups and amped music were disruptive on our first night. read more

Bodega Dunes is a spacious 99-site campground located just minutes away from the Bodega Harbor. The campground is part of the Sonoma Coast State Park. Unlike Wright's Beach, another popular campground SCSP offers, Bodega Dunes does not have direct beach access. There are trails that lead to the beach and the harbor; however, dogs are not allowed on the trails. It's worth noting that there is an equestrian trailhead, so you may see a few folks riding their horses around the perimeter of the campground! Upon arrival, the staff were super helpful and let us know that the camp host have firewood for $10 a bundle. The campground is divided into three sections and has a bathroom. Each site has a picnic table, food locker, and a fire ring. Some sites are situated near sand dunes, which makes it fun and friendly for families with little kids! I've actually seen a few teenagers with cardboard boxes, so I assume they're having a blast sliding down the dunes. Our site, #45, is quite possibly the largest in our section and can easily accommodate 2-3 tents. The downside to our site is that our view is of some residential properties, but since we're out and about hiking along the coast, it's fine. Towards the back of our site, there is a walk way that leads to the bathrooms. Each bathroom, women and men, has two stalls and two sinks. Unfortunately, the showers were out of order, so we had to walk to the other bathrooms. I also loved the designated dishwashing station near the bathroom. Overall, I really enjoyed our two night stay at Bodega Dunes! read more

My husband and I recently went camping at bodega dunes campground with some friends. It was nice to head towards the coast and away from the Sacramento valley heat and smoky air. Our campsite was away from the dunes, closer to the bay. This was a slight bummer since it felt less like a campground and more like we were in someone's backyard. Our campsite was actually right where all of the horse trailers park to unload their horses for the dune trails. With that being said, the campsites are fairly spaced apart and offer a nice variety of shade and sun. It was cool and misty most of the days we were there so we were glad to have some tree coverage for warmth to protect from the mist and the wind. Our campsite was close to a water Spicket but as far as you could possibly be from a bathroom end which only became an issue after several glasses of wine and seltzer. The bathrooms were relatively clean when we arrived and, naturally, were dirtier as the weekend progressed. All in all, nice campground on the coast if you are looking to spend some time in the bodega Bay area. read more

This is one of the campgrounds I keep coming back to all the time. Bodega Dunes is convenient and beautiful. Not very far away from Sacramento. The weather in Bodega is very close to San Francisco. Not very hot in the summer and not very cold in the winter. The best thing is they have almost no insects or very very few insects you can found in the area. The only thing you have to worry about is raccoons. Make sure you have to lockup your food before sleep! I still remember my friend called me a few years ago told me to bring all the food to replace the foods he has got stole by the raccoons! lol! Bodega Dunes Campgrounds have food locked cabinets in every campsite. Most of the campsites are big and nice. The lower campgrounds are close to the beach with sands on most of the campsites and wide open. The upper campgrounds are no sands and seem more privacy. But this is one of the best campgrounds in north California. You will enjoy it! read more

I was reminded by my friend that not all campgrounds are like this so I better not get too used to it :) As many have stated this is the place to go! You drive up to the campground and the Park Ranger was very nice and informative. Funny as it sounds, this place has the best RV dump station in Bodega Bay. It's cleaner than the average I've seen. It could be due to the fact it's located on slope. The slope helps with flooding flushing out excess into the drain where it belongs. If you are camping at Wright's Beach, this is the place to do your business. It's part of your reservation. I'm sure it's the same for Bodega Bay Dunes campers, but unaware of the fees to the general public. read more

What a beautiful location! So many of the sites have space between and some privacy from other sites due to the sand dunes and vegetation. We found the campground to be pretty quiet and peaceful except the ones nearer the road. The staff is super friendly and helpful. There are no hookups so we used a solar panel. It's foggy a lot but the sun does peek out and we were able to charge the battery during brighter days. At the check in kiosk, there is a place to fill with clean water and free sewage dump on the way out. We didn't have a line coming in or out. If you like to walk, hike or ride your bikes there are plenty of places within the campground to enjoy and a couple of trailheads. While camping here, we hiked a coastal access trail from the campground (site 38) which led us to the Bodega peninsula, visited goat rock beach (amazing!), walked Bodega Head, (really) enjoyed dinner at Fishetarian restaurant and visited Roadhouse Coffee 3 times (great lattes, no place to sit inside). read more

This has been my favorite campground so far! I was on campsite #31 for two nights and it was right across from the bathrooms/ showers. The showers take tokens (the middle shower doesn't need any tokens for it to work). There is lots of sand everywhere. You can easily walk or drive to the beach. I didn't stay that long on the beach since it was soo cold but it was a pretty clean well kept beach. There is a significant amount of space between the campsites which is nice since it's not so cramped. There is a fire pit and a bench that is already provided. When you make a reservation you do not get to reserve a specific site. This may limit your choices if you can't show up at check-in to find the best site. Expect to check-in at the booth and get your map, then go drive around to pick your site, then return to the booth to let them know which number you want. Pick out a few sites because some might already be reserved. For next time I will write down all the sites that I like and then just ask for that site right when I check-in. The beach is not too close and the waves are crazy there. It is a popular place so you can plan on moving down the beach a little ways to find a more private spot if you need one. There are some small, sunny sites that I wouldn't want. It can be cold and breezy here so bring warm clothes. The bathrooms have flush toilets and showers which makes this the perfect campground. We just stayed two nights this past weekend. We were Campsite #94 & #96 (with 16 ppl). Great site for large group, but terrible on privacy. Site big enough for five tents of various sizes. Right across from RR & showers, and washing station. Showers and RR clean and free. No BBQ pit, only fire pit. Only one big tree between the two sites which shades each camp at various times throughout the day. So lots of sun, which is ok if your gone all day. No problems with raccoons because we put everything away at night. Dogs allowed at campsite only. We would definitely stay again, but a little more private spot. Beautiful sandy beach access with very few people, compared to Salmon Creek beach just down the way. Outhouses, picnic tables and BBQ at parking lot. No dogs allowed on beach. Great place for kids to boogie board or play in the sand. Great location for first time and beginner campers as this is close to stores and the Bay Area, or those stopping in for the night along the coast. Close to many beautiful beach coves. Had a pretty good time camping here with a group of 20! But a little frustrating to get a campsite. We booked our reservations for 3 campsites, but you are NOT guaranteed WHICH campsite. With 3 sites and 20 people all sharing food, we wanted to make sure we could stay together or close by. Check in is at 2:00 P.M., but you can head over as early as 10 A.M. to give a list of your top 3 spots. When we got there around 9-ish, there were already 2 people waiting in line, and maybe 5 people that arrived after us over the next 30 minutes. There are no set hours for the rangers to come in, so we just stood around hoping they would arrive before 11. When someone finally showed up, she was very nice and helpful. We gave her our list of spots, which she wrote up on our parking tags. However, the camphost had already allowed someone to check in to one of the spots! So we had to scramble to find 3 more sites, relatively close together. Luckily, we actually got decent campsites, but they weren't really next door. We made campsite 4 our main site, and had the food set up here. The other two spots, 6 and 7 were nearby and walking distance, but further out than preferred. Campsite 4 had plenty of space for 3+ tents. We originally set up close the edge of the site on the mini cliff, but found out it was way to windy to stay. So we moved our tents towards the trees. Plenty of trees, but maybe not enough for hammocks/slacklines. Campfire circle, picnic table, and food locker available at each site. Quiet hours not really enforced. Decent walk from the bathroom. Bathrooms were pretty clean and had piping hot water. Rare for camp bathrooms. I thought we were being pretty loud, but once you walked out of our campsite, you couldn't really hear us. Which is nice for our neighbors. We drove down to the beach to walk around, nice long stretch with a boardwalk and good winds for kite flying. But not much else. Too cold this weekend to get into the water. Overall, a good time here. We even stopped at the local farmers market on our Sunday heading out. But probably wouldn't camp here again because of the hassle of trying to find campsites without being able to reserve beforehand. read more

Very nice campground. I had a person who would move to the East coast from California. So we camped here for his last weekend in California. Camping along the beach is very iconic thing in California. So this place is now very special to me. The reservation doesn't specify which site. So reservation required, but the pick the good site is first-come first-served. We got #1. It had a view and far enough to #2 site. Spacious (two tent sites) with a picnic table and food storage. At night seals were making noise, it was very cute, and we heard wave sounds. It was very nice and memorable weekend. The trail is from campgound and you can walk on the beach or trail near the beach. Watch out for poison oak. read more

Our Boy Scouts Troop reserved 6 sites on a fall weekend. Arrived on Friday at 10pm, it was dark and raining. We knew it would be chaotic to "scout" for 6 sites close together, and it was (but we are on an adventure). We ended up on the upper loop 1-21, close to the bathroom. Let's review the bathroom...bathroom alone deserves 5 stars. Why? Because there are 3 free, hot showers. After hiking back from playing all day at Salmon Creek, a hot shower feels like high class luxury. The showers and bathrooms are tiles and are well cleaned daily. Bathroom has 2 toilet stalls, mirrors, garbage can, also hot and cold water; there are no soaps or paper towels (less mess this way). Next let's highlight about the raccoon. The site comes with a food locker which we stowed with dry goods. However, we did not bring a lock since we didn't think we needed one. About midnight, I heard some sound at the food locker, looked out of the tent and saw no one there but the locker was opened. I then shined a flashlight and saw 2 red eyes looking back at me. So we got out to close the locker and put a stick through the lock hole. However, the raccoon already stole some bread. They know where the food is so they kept coming back though out the night to tug at the food locker door for more food. Each time they came, my defense went up, I would shine the light out and they would run away. This lasted most of the night, so I did not have a good sleep, even tough I was tired and the sandy ground was soft to lie down on. read more

My expectations for camping trip: clear moonlight night with coyote howling in the background roaring camp fire and ghost stories enough smores to last throughout the night basically, roughing it and communing with nature What I got at Bodega Bay: a parking/camping spot a designated place for building a fire and nearby BBQ pit some guy selling fire wood showers and public restrooms RV's and gas run generators super cold weather at night. The experience: It wasn't exactly what I'd call roughing it but we still had a good time. There was BBQ, fresh air, fishing, a lot of brew, a little Texas hold 'em at night followed by Madden on the PS3. I'm just kidding about the the PS3. We only brought DS's. read more

Just got back from camping here and had a great time. Initially we had a reservation at Wrights Beach down the road but when we saw our site it was microscopic. The ranger said we could check out Bodega Dunes instead and we're glad we did! We stayed on the upper loop which seems to be a little less crowded with "quieter campers" which is nice. We could hear a lil noise from the lower loop at night so I can only imagine . We chose #6 which was large and flat but kinda open so not a lot of privacy, but we had our own sand area for the kids! Bathrooms were near and very clean with pretty hot water! Also free showers in the back which was amazing! Remember it's bodega and it's cold and damp at night.. Bring layers!!!! My happy place is the ocean so we took this opportunity to go to Bodega during off season-October 14. My husband had been to Bodega Dunes before. We drove around first to choose a campsite. The one we chose was right on the bay. Initially I hadn't noticed there was road, East Bay Road, right between our campsite and the bay so we did hear some traffic. I would choose one more inland the next time. So, here are the positives that far outweigh any negatives. You're in Bodega Bay! Beautiful, artistic, delicious seafood and sunsets. At night, besides an occasional car, we heard the fog horn, seals, and the ocean waves in the distance. And enjoyed the most beautiful sunsets over the bay. ( I'll also add, some drunk humans... There are many Airbnb's around. ). But that didn't interrupt the loveliness of our stay. More specifically about the campsite... Many sites to choose from, but there are no hookups. The bathrooms are immaculate throughout, but there is no handsome. There are private, coin operated showers. Lots of shade if that's what you want, but sunny ones too. The campsites are well maintained, are a good size, and semi private. The weather was absolutely perfect though cold at night, but that's to be expected at the ocean. I would highly recommend this campground for an ocean getaway. read more

For me, Bodega Dunes is nostalgia at its finest. It was always this specific campsite i could count on going to several times a year with all of my extended family. To this day i would not camp in the middle of the wilderness unless there was some type of water surrounding the area- i cant help that now, as many times I've been camping here as a kiddo i have been conditioned! With that being said aside from camping here, i always find myself going back to the beach that this site sits on in the most recent years. Have not camped here in a long long time but i always soak in some sun at this beach before driving further on the cliffs in search of another portion of the pacific coast to explore. It wasn't until recently they've built a new walk way that leads to the beach (see photos) & as soon as you near the last level onto the sand the breeze always carries with it the smell of the salt from the ocean. The beach connected to this camp site is definitely one of my favorites on this part of the Sonoma Coast. Walk about half a mile through the rubbles, then the sand dunes to the beach while your camping here, it is beautiful. read more

We were at this campsite from 2/19/18-2/24/18 in our 24ft camper trailer. Only one loop was open which was fine as there were maybe only 10 other sites occupied. Warm showers (coin operated) were great and restrooms had running hot water as well. Although dogs weren't allowed on the beach over the hill there were a lot of dogs in the campground on leash. The dump site at the entrance was convenient to fill our fresh water tanks when arriving and dump at our departure. It was a great basecamp as we explored up the coast. One day we drove out to Doran to check it out and I was glad we chose Bodega Dunes. Doran was more of a parking lot style campground while there was more space as well as hills and trees providing additional privacy. We will be back. read more

Just make sure you put all food items in your vehicle as the raccoons can get in the food locker even with a lock, the pry the door back just enough to get their paw in. So you aren't exactly camping right on the beach, but there are areas of sand. It's a nice campground, but I doubt I will ever come back because of how much of a hassle it is to secure a site. The website states that check-in is at 2pm, but if I hadn't called to ask questions I wouldn't have known to come early around 10am since some campers check out at that time and I can snag the site I want. The ranger doesn't always show at a certain time either, but the lady that helped us was super nice. You drive around to see if anyone is packing up their site, but technically check out isn't until noon. Then you go to the front to see if the site you want is available. Some people were lined up to see if they could stay another night. We were able to secure site #4, which turned out great. We had a large group of about 20 and had reserved two other sites around the corner, but used #4 as the main area to hang out. We fit three tents, but could probably fit more. The site gives a lot of privacy, just enough openness for the sun to shine through and enough shrubs and trees to block the wind at night. There is a fire pit with a half grill on top for cooking and a wooden pantry to store your food. You must do this! We left some avocados and one other thing out in a bag (but within a ziploc bag) and the raccoons got to it. One picnic table so make sure you bring additional tables for a larger group and chairs. Take a left out of the site and a short walk up a little dirt trail to the bathrooms. Thank the Lord for real bathrooms. No honey buckets here. The bathrooms were actually clean but there was no soap or paper towels. Watch out for the hot water because it's super hot straight out the gates. Tokens for showers, but we didn't use them. You can't gather wood for the firepit, but they sell a bundle for $7. Bodega Dunes is a lovely spot and in a great location to visit Sonoma Coast State Park. There were a few issues though that bring the rating down, though. Number one is the first come first serve site reservation system. This means you'll be on the hunt for a good site when you arrive so if you're running late you could easily be stuck in a spot that is too small for your group as many of the campsites were tiny and many were incredibly roomy. Last ones to arrive won't have a choice. I suspect folks come mid week to cherry pick the best spots so even arriving at check in on Friday you'll miss out on the very best spots. And there are some GREAT spots. We did okay but had we arrived an hour later we'd be making due in something less than ideal for our group. Also our shower was broken so we were cutting through another campsite to get to one that works so that's awkward and inconvenient. There is also no dishwashing station so they recommend you wash in a bucket in your site. For those accustomed to a dishwashing station near the restrooms or being able to wash at the source this is an adjustment and you'll need to bring an appropriate receptacle to do the dishes in. Their is no campstore so you'll get firewood from the Camp Host. They do not have kindling just firewood so bring your own kindling as wood gathering is forbidden. On the positive, the sites are well maintained and many are spaced to give privacy. The surrounding area offers beachcombing, amazing views and some great hikes. Contrasted with hot weather inland camping this was a pleasant, clean and cool experience. It was too cool for swimming in June and the ocean is very rugged in this area but the surrounding towns are cute and it was fun to day trip up and down the coast. Well maintained campsite with pretty views of trees, beach sand and the bay! They have the cleanest campsite bathroom I've been to so far. Close to restaurants, the beach, and the beautiful cliffs. read more
