Traveld all the way to Wunderbar Deli in Port Jefferson from Islandia area to have a Bacon, Egg and Cheese sandwich after seeing it posted all over the internet how good they are. We arrived at 11:40 this morning (Sunday) and was told that the grill closes at 11:30am. I explained all the way we traveled and why, and we were still told no way. I'll never go there again, don't care how good the sandwich is. The place looked dingy and grimy too; maybe a sign to have not eaten anything from there. Ordered a BLT and got an inedible mess. The sandwich was not cut properly, so I had a tiny sliver of bread on the bottom of one of the halves, plus instead of normal strips of bacon, they just threw giant inedible chunks of bacon that I had to remove just to eat. They weren't busy, there wasn't a rush, they were just too lazy to cut the sandwich properly or separate the pieces of bacon for the sandwich. I've eaten here for years and it is always consistently good and ingredients are always fresh, but something happened with the chicken soup and it had to be a mistake. I ordered breakfast this morning from Wunderbar Deli in Port Jefferson Station. we paid $33 for an egg white omelet, bacon egg and cheese on a roll, sausage egg and cheese on a roll and a bagel with cream cheese. Needless to say the omelet was the size of a silver dollar pancake. The bacon egg and cheese was all bacon and again a silver dollar pancake egg and the same for the sausage sandwich. When I called to explain my shock at this breakfast the owner said that he used 3 eggs!! Absolutely NOT did those sandwiches have 3 eggs! When he offered no explanation other than he used 3 eggs I told him I was going to write a review. He hung up on me!! It was a shock that that's the way he chose to handle my complaint. The food was not even tasty. It's not a place I would go back to nor will I ever recommend them to anyone. I just wanted to give people a heads up. read more

I passed by this place many times but what got me in the door was this innocuous remark made by an acquaintance: "I like Wunderbar, but they put too much bacon on their BLTs." This statement made no sense to my husband and I. You might as well have told us someone was giving away money. Or bacon. We headed over the next day. OMG that BLT was GOOD. And for $6, it's a big sandwich. Any sandwich w bacon on it, like the turkey club, will come with that chopped bacon strata on it. It's at least 0.5" thick. I've had their cucumber salad and their german potato salad, both excellent, both approved by an actual German immigrant who said it was like her mom used to make. And the crab cakes.... I'm not a seafood fan but these are addictively good. And the meat case has all kinds of great stuff if you like German coldcuts. Everyone working at this deli seems to have a huge chip on their shoulder. Might have been a great place 40 years ago, I don't know. The food can be really good on the right day but it's not worth the price of admission. If the owner or anyone else you encounter is in a bad mood they'll deliberately screw with your order or just treat you like dirt here. If you complain they stare at you like you're an idiot. I don't know how many times I've gotten raw, runny eggs or some random abomination like mayo on my egg sandwich ordering food here simply because I didn't specify to not do that when whoever was taking my order was hungover and feeling grouchy that morning. Last weekend the guy behind the counter yelled at me because I asked if they were still serving lunch at 2:38 in the afternoon(their lunch special is supposed to end at 3:30 but everything was already being put away). I don't mean that he seemed annoyed. He actually started obnoxiously complaining while he waved his hands in the air and raised his voice at me because I was making him do his job. Like I was wasting his time by trying to give him money. I told him to forget it and walked out and the guy kept mouthing off at me while I was going out the door. It seems to me that the owners stopped caring here years ago for whatever reason. Everything on the shelves is dusty and in many cases over its expiration date. The positive reviews here all seem to be from older people who have been going there since the 70's. Comments saying things like "long lines for crispy bacon worth the wait!" are false advertising. There hasn't been a long line at this place in probably 15 years. Maybe they treat their older customers better or maybe those people see getting treated with contempt by a guy behind a deli counter as "old school" and get some kind of kick out of it. Not the first time we went there to get a sandwich their salads are excellent we went to get a roast beef sandwich a couple weeks ago and the roast beef was heated up and was so dry it was like jerky and a hot garlic bread this time we went Tuesday that they claim they make fresh chicken cordon bleu not it's a frozen little piece of Patty that was frozen still when I got it he said they had no more rolls so my wife said don't worry about just put it in a container we have rolls in the car the guy gives us two heaping teaspoons a mashed potatoes that were ice cold not even fresh mashed potatoes I called the guy and he says oh we don't serve it hot after certainly at the time you got a heating it up why don't you think of asking the person would you like a heating up nobody takes pride in their food anymore horrible and I asked a guy for credit and the guy said I can't do that so I guess you don't care about his business they've been in business a long time​​​​ read more

We stopped by this morning on our way to Port Jeff Ferry. I ordered the steak and egg special with scrambled eggs and Swiss, while my husband ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese on a roll. We opened the food to eat on the ferry and guess what? No Swiss, steak, bacon, or scrambled eggs anywhere in site. Instead we got fried eggs with American cheese and a sausage patty with eggs. It's too late to return this mess because we are on the boat. The irony in all of this is that it was a rainy Saturday morning and the deli was not busy at all. Wunderbar which is a German expression meaning "Wonderful," in my opinion has the best egg sammies (sandwiches) within a 10-15mi radius of the entire Port Jefferson/Three Village area. Their sandwiches are extremely meaty as they don't skimp on the bacon and other breakfast meats, very large, the best bang for your buck and the bread doesn't become as mushy as happens to many egg sandwiches from other delis. They have become my GO TO egg sandwich establishment as they were highly recommended by several other folks and they definitely didn't disappoint. My egg sandwiches are monstrous, usually 12 egg whites, 2 whole eggs, grilled chicken, bacon, turkey, tomato on whole wheat toast with pepper and no butter. They are absolutely freakin' awesome! So this is my fifth time coming here, why do they keep serving stale bagels? Every time I come here I get a stale bagel. They load your egg sandwich with four pounds of bacon but when you order a cream cheese bagel you have to look real close to see if they didn't forget to put the cream cheese on. Fancy at Wunderbar would include adding lettuce or tomato... This place is the type of German deli your grandpop might have talked about from a bygone era. The food is simple, fresh and the portions are huge. The staff are courteous and the line moves quickly. The German potato salad is a favorite of mine. I have been out of Port Jefferson for 5 years and had to return to my favorite breakfast deli. It seemed like the Wundering started before I got inside. I wondered why there were no cars in the lot, I got inside, I wundered why the place had this "Rode hard and out away wet look" .. The place didn't look the same, didn't feel the same. I ordered the Super Special Steak/Cheese and double eggs on a roll. After 20 minutes, I Wundered where my order was. It finally came, and I left to eat it outside. When I opened it, I Wundered why it appeared to have been placed on the roll, then squashed with a spatula. I Wundered why there was no cheese on the steak and eggs. This place has pretty good sandwiches for good prices. I got a ham, pepperoni and salami sandwich with a Zebra Cake and Gatorade for about 10 bucks. The sandwich was good however they drenched it in barbecue sauce which wasn't really that good because I looked like a murderer when I was done with all of the sauce on my hands. I've also had a turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and mayo with a bottle of water. That was also about 10 bucks. Good sandwich shop with chips, salads, and other things. Got a fried egg bec. I like the tremendous amount of bacon they put on the breakfast sandwich, but at least use quality bacon. Every time I bit into my sandwich a disgusting piece of stringy bacon would fall out of it. I took most of the bacon off because it was stringy and fatty, literally made me gag. Was charged $6 for this sandwich and it doesn't even come with complimentary juice, tea, or coffee. I feel that's a rip off. Very disappointing. The ordering and purchasing procedure is quite confusing. I go in and there's a bunch of customers just standing around, no line, no organization. Very frustrating.
