Luckily, their seemingly never-ending happy hour was on and we managed to get two martinis for the price of one. Not being a vodka or gin drinker, I struggled to choose a drink from the menu, and the unhelpful bartender really killed my chilled-out mood. The seating area has dimmed lighting with cool lamps and nooks with small booths to sit in. We chose to sit in the artistic booth at the furthest end, but felt it as we seemed to be forgotten by the bartender who was supposedly bringing over a straw for my friend (because they didn't have any behind the bar). We initially asked for Tequila Sunrise but they didn't do them (!) so we checked out the happy hour menu. My drink had amaretto and hibiscus syrup in it which went down nicely, but my friend's drink was very bitter and she had to down it to get rid of it! Overall, a nice place with cool design interior but try to come during the evening where the staff actually know what they're doing.

But the unique, vast menu, and their focus on making a super detailed and complete martini experience, is great. Not only do you get to choose your aromatics, but you get to craft your preferences! Martinis are one of those acquired taste drinks, some of us will never like it (me included), so having the option to customize and make it tasty for your liking is great. And on the theatrics. Some bars put props or make fire and it's whatever. But the theatrics here are legit. They'll cut the ice in a certain way for a reason, or dispense via a different mechanism than a straight pour, or will aerate the cocktail before serving, etc. So many detail oriented techniques that make the drink special, entertaining, and tasty! As a bonus you get to take home the recipes for the cocktails you drank, but let's be honest, the magic stays at Connaught.

But I couldn't wait to see it for myself, particularly as the Monument location was having a launch for their new summer menu and a tasting of their sinful cocktails. Manager Fabio gave us a mini cocktail class and was wonderfully welcoming to the relatively recently opened establishment. Dirty Martini is completely underground with two large bars and 3 areas for seating groups of any size. One resembles a quasi-retro disco with large red light up tunnel walls the other is lit with neon green light on top while the seating area has red leather booth seating and rectangular lamps very reminiscent of the Ritz with a clubbing twist. The walls are plastered with photograph graffiti wall art and red curtains divide the areas. The menu featured with mini gourmet burgers, pork and caramelized red onion hot dogs, Cajun spiced wedges, chicken satay skewers, and crispy vegetable dumplings. There were also sharers consisting of hummous, olives, chorizo, parma ham and various dipping sauces. The cocktails were fresh and perfect with lovely garnishes and deep flavors. We had the Peach and White Tea cocktail along with the Orange and the Blood Orange and Vanilla. Apparently there is a happy hour until 10pm on Martinis and a DJ at several nights. This place would be perfect for small and medium sized parties with special deals advertised. I am a Martini fan in general but suddenly I am preferring the Dirty Martini.

It hits you as soon as you go in, well, as soon as I did, my friend had a cocktail waiting for me, when all I really wanted was a beer. Either way, I took my cocktail and smiled, and was escorted to our lounge where our party had a table. It is over two floors and if you get here before 9pm, you will have access to the club downstairs which plays upbeat Rnb, Hip Hop and Funky house. So it was free for us to party too. They apparently serve great food here too, but I am yet to experience it. This is a really nice Bar, friendly staff, and a good night out. We stayed till around 12 and then went elsewhere, but come to think of it, if we stayed at Babble, we would have had a better night out.

That alone creates a wait, but it doesn't help that their happy hour drink specials are all very complicated cocktails. In other words, I asked if a simple mixed drink was on happy hour special, but was told I needed to select from a menu that was much more complicated, and said drinks took the bar staff 4x the time and resources to make. Oh, and twice the price. Spent the next hour downstairs, where the bar was better but the room was very hot. At this point, mixed drinks are about 8.50 and beers start at 5.25 GBP. If you can get one. I stood at the upstairs bar for almost a half hour before getting noticed. When I complained about the wait, the bartender refused to ask for the manager and said I was in the wrong. But even more strangely, she couldn't help me because she was training a new employee. I'm generally supportive of good, local businesses, but Babble's only redeeming factor is location. Otherwise, it's a dud.

Deciding that a recent wedding anniversary was excuse, we met at the bar one evening in August at the legendary Claridge's Hotel. Yes, the drinks were outrageously expensive -28 pounds and up for martinis and most other drinks, but they were perfectly prepared. The bar snacks, cheeses and oysters and fancy pizzas and so forth, also were not exactly a bargain. (Our bill for four with snacks and drinks was around US$600.) We were all seated in a kind of corner table near the main bar. Claridge's of course is not at all fancy. Everything is understated, with lots of marble, with heavy emphasis on photographs and momentos of British Royalty. We spent more than we should, by far, but we greatly enjoyed our evening.

I had the seasonal Fairytale of New York, which was the best of the lot, in part because it had no juice or other mixers like that. I often go with drinks along that line if I don't know the place. I then had the Scotch Mist, which was not as good. But it had grenadine, pineapple, and citrus, so there as the problem: it had too much of those and not enough of the Scotches. My wife had the Flyaway, tequila-based, and found it ok but too watery,juicy, and weak. Again, it had juices in it. Our daughter had a dirty martini which was not good. It had kalamata olives, which we took to be an attempt to seem fancy or avant garde, but which simply didn't work in a martini. This was not terrible but basically just an ok,somewhat crass cocktail place for people who want to seem sophisticated and "have fun" with loud music, etc., but don't really know anything about drinks. Staff were very sweet, although our poor server was new and was struggling to answer our questions. Drinks are very expensive, cocktails listed on the menu start at about £9.50. The vodka martini was kind of awesome - sort of like drinking delicious petrol. I tried a gun barrel gin with lemon seltzer - the gin came in a separate glass so you could try it - mine had a smoked almonds and cherry flavour which gave it a nice hint of sweetness. I dumped my gin in the seltzer after a few sips which I then regretted because I couldn't taste it any more. The seltzer itself was absolutely delicious - one of the most delightful refreshing soft drinks I've had in a long time. So I would suggest you enjoy them separately! There didn't seem to be much in the way of food - a colleague ordered a cheeseboard which didn't look particularly impressive for £12 although I liked the cute old plates that came with it. Anyway, I would definitely recommend this place: fun, fancy and worth checking out.

The waitress took the time to explain the menu which is laid out to guide you towards their specialty drinks based on fruits, spices, herbs, etc. There is also a classic menu for general spirits and beers. We went with two types of Old Fashioned - one with the house bourbon and the other with a special peanut butter and jam whiskey. It was fun to try a different take on it although we preferred the original. Overall it's a good spot for a quiet conversation during the week or perhaps a louder one on weekends if you are ready to kick back a couple and not concerned with price.
