Best chocolate around. Period. Their flavors are delicious, inventive, and playful. Their staff is friendly and will walk you through how chocolate is made and why their bars are purer than other bars. After dinner my wife and i usually have desert. Do you absolutely love chocolate? Are you the type of person who doesn't think twice about spending $50+ on a bottle of wine (not talking about in a restaurant here)? Xocolatl is probably for you! The quality of the chocolate really is superb. But I have to factor in value in the rating, and that's why this is a 3-star review. $9 for a bar of chocolate is just nuts. I'm pretty sure I've never paid more than $5 for a single bar of similar size, and while this chocolate is fantastic, it's not the best I've had. The gentleman working when I stopped by gave me a great explanation of their process, as well as several samples of their chocolate, and I like supporting local businesses, so I forked over the $9.50 for a single flavored chocolate bar. I tried 4 different chocolates, and they were all delicious. But I'd never spend $9 for a bar of chocolate again. Or $8. Or even $7 (but at $7 I could justify a 4-star rating). $6 for this quality is starting to get within reason, but I've had similar quality in the $4-5 range. Again, great chocolate. Love the process. But I think they're going to have to get their prices down to succeed long term. read more

I don't normally like dark chocolate, but this stuff is AMAZING. They have samples you can try and the staff tells you all about how the ingredients are sourced and why something tastes the way it does. We bought a few bars and eat just one little piece and that one piece is so delicious and satisfying that you don't need any more than just a bite. read more

We stopped by to try some chocolate at this cute store in the Krog Street Market. The bars are pricey at $9 each, but the quality is great. The bars are single origin, with fruity Madagascar beans and nutty/buttery Ecuadorean beans. The flavored bars are also delicious. Ms Beffrey liked the bar with coconut milk, chocolate nibs, and sea salt. The staff are very knowledgeable and will walk you through the process, as all their products are made in front of you -- beans are shipped to their store and transformed into chocolate bars in plain sight, for a true bean-to-bar process (as opposed to those crocks-of-crap Mast Brothers "artisan" chocolate bars). The frozen chocolate is delicious, especially with the coconut whipped cream. It does leave a little bit of a film/coating on the tongue that may be unpleasant for some folks. A small is more than enough for two people, and may best be shared by three, as it is quite rich. read more

Sampled some pieces of their chocolate, but I then ordered their thick chocolate-coconut-vanilla shake since it was so hot today. The flavor was SO RICH it left an aftertaste of dark chocolate powder, enough to make you thristy for water. Definitely a high quality drink you can take your time with and savor rather than something you slurp down quickly. The whipped cream was dairy free and not too heavy. I bought a ticket for a tasting & tour of their microfactory in Krog Street Market, and I loved the experience! I highly recommend it. Sip red wine and learn about the chocolate making process from bean to bar. Then, discuss the different types of cacao/chocolate and flavor notes in each piece you taste. After receiving an email about an upcoming mezcal and chocolate tasting (IKR?!?!?!) at Xocolatl, hubby and I met another couple there, not sure what to expect. What a cool experience! Not only did owner Matt give us an incredible lesson on the intricacies of cacao farming and chocolate making - including a behind-the-scenes look at the Xocolatl "factory" which is located right in their stall - but we also tasted some amazing mezcal alongside chocolates specifically chosen to pair well with the different flavors of the liquor. I love this place. Is it pricey? Sure but you get what you pay for. Good luck going anywhere else and getting premium dark chocolate that doesn't contain cocoa butter added. The bars are to be savored not devoured. It has turned me into a chocolate snob for sure! I didn't even look twice at the kids halloween candy lol! Everyone there is incredibly knowledgeable and kind. They didn't have the bar I wanted in stock and looked in the office to see if they had any bars and they did! Loved the specialty chocolate here. We were walking around the market after lunch and stopped here because of the AMAZING smell. They were really helpful and gave us samples and tastes of all the chocolates. The chocolate bars were so flavorful and different than any other chocolate I've tried. We also got the homemade chocolate hazelnut spread which was 100x better than any Nutella. The chocolate was amazing, and we loved the personal attention and service. Yum! read more

For me, there is no comparison between this chocolate and Godiva. This is far superior IMO. While some other reviewers commented that they can stop after eating just one piece, I cannot - unfortunately. My only justification for pigging out on this expensive chocolate is that I think it's the healthiest chocolate out there. As for cost - this is definitely the most expensive chocolate I've ever eaten. I think you have to be a chocolate aficionado to justify the price. Give it a try at least once. You won't regret it. Love this place. My friends and I were walking around Krog Street market waiting for a reservation when we were offered chocolate samples. I think we all fully intended to take a sample, politely say thank you and carry on, but we all ended up buying something. The chocolate is on the pricier side (9-9.50 for a single bar or 25 for three) but worth every penny. Xocolatl is a very small operation in the Krog Street Market (a place you should wander). I drove over specifically for Xocolatl and wasn't disappointed. They do a lot of chocolate in a small space and the breadth of product is impressive. They run from a dark milk to 85% and include nibs and other texture in a number of bars. They also are doing a sort of Valentine's milk chocolate that is quite impressive. The Peppermint bar stands out, but all the straight chocolate and single source bars are also excellent. The current run of small batch chocolate across the country is so promising. Go. Buy good chocolate. read more

The chocolate is fantastic, and so is their business ethos. Sure, you may think it is pricey, but that's probably because you have been eating the cheap crappy stuff most of your life! They care about where the cacao beans come from and how the farmers are treated. My husband surprised me with a tour and tasting at Xocolatl as a part of the chocolate-themed Valentines he had been treating me with! I had no idea what I was getting into, but it was really interesting and fun. I feel I must apologize for all of the Willy Wonka jokes I made, which I'm sure they've heard a thousand times before... I'm a librarian and information hound, so I was thrilled to learn some new stuff! I'll never look at chocolate the same way again! I still can't get over how much they do in such a small space. What I didn't know was the extent of the process, the work that goes into each bar and that fair trade means a lot more than I thought and to a lot of hardworking people. She then asked if I enjoyed coconut and gave me a sample of their chocolate with coconut milk which had me buying a bar for a coincidentally rainy day. yes, it costs a lot more than what you'll find at the grocery store ... but it really is worth it! First and foremost, it is DELICIOUS. they'll give you a free tasting to show you just how good it is. Second, the guy who gave us the tasting (Simon) was super nice and very knowledgeable about the products. Third, the chocolate is LOCALLY made, fair trade (bought direct from the farmers ... NO SLAVE LABOR) and organic. Fourth, did i mention how freakin' delish this stuff is? I normally don't like chocolate with stuff in it ... like coffee or nuts. BUT their coffee bar is yummy (the perfect balance) and their bar with almonds was really good. they also have hot chocolate, chocolate nibs and other cool stuff. It was difficult to choose which i liked best. I'll definitely be back and my friends are already tired of hearing about how awesome this place is. I'm really glad to have found a source for chocolate that i don't have to feel guilty about eating. read more
