So good I misheard/misread the name as 'Heavenly Gelato.' I'd done my bodily due diligence and eaten a health dinner so I was on the hunt for something sweet (and, maybe, not so healthy) to round things out. Walking around Ponce City Market I saw -- or, rather, I was led -- to the gelato stand. I spent summers in my teens in the ice cream and froyo world but the richness of gelato missed me. No more. Given a choice I'll always opt for the dense, silky stuff.* Because of my past I am not one of those who saunters up to the counter and asks for a sample of every flavor. If that's you, stop it. It's annoying. I had a few questions and the kind lady behind the counter was quick to answer them -- she even tried to get me to have some samples but my rule is steadfast. I told her about it and she laughed, nodding knowingly. I love that the menu contains all the allergen info so you can make the best decision for your tastebuds and body. Despite being iffy on milk sometimes I went for a scoop of nutella and a scoop of coffee. Of course the flavors blended beautifully. Of course the textures added to the experience. Of course I did my best to savor eating it rather than racing through every bite. Honeysuckle Gelato at Ponce City Market was such a fun surprise. I went in hoping to find candy cane ice cream--and there it was. I can't believe I forgot to review this place. The candy cane gelato was creamy, dreamy, and absolutely delicious--smooth vanilla gelato blended with crunchy bits of candy cane for the perfect festive touch. It had that silky, homemade feel with just the right balance of minty freshness and sweet holiday flavor. Seasonal flavors can sometimes feel gimmicky, but this one really delivered. We usually walk over from Krog Street Market along the BeltLine, which is such a fun, lively stroll--and by the time you get to Ponce City Market, it definitely feels like you've earned that gelato. First off, the line for this place was so long but it was absolutely worth the wait. It was a super crowded day at the market so it's to be expected. While we were waiting, we watched one of the girls behind the counter making the waffle cones, which excited me even more. I sampled the bananas foster and fell in love. So I got that with a scoop of the coffee on a waffle cone and the flavor combo was amazing. So good! The flavor options were so unique but there were the classic favorites as well. When I went to Honeysuckle the first thing I noticed was the cards in front of each flavor detailing the main allergens. This is important to me as someone with a deathly fatal peanut allergy. After waiting in line for 15 minutes, when I was ordering I noticed the attendant was using the same scooper for EVERY FLAVOR. This meant the peanuts, coconuts, dairy, whatever allergen you had if you consumed ANY flavor you'd be exposed to all of it. After asking the attendant if she had been using the same utensil across all flavors she admitted to it and I was able to just walk away. Imagine if I hadn't noticed! After a recent dinner at PCM, my girlfriend and I decided to explore and search for dessert. After walking a loop, I settled on Honeysuckle Gelato mainly due to the constant flow of patrons - they must know something I don't, right? The young staff behind the counter is nice but not overly so - I asked for a couple of samples and eventually settled on the first flavor I tried, Honey Fig. I'm a fan of fig gelato and am always excited to see this offered. The gelato here is good but I wouldn't say it's mind blowing. One thing to note is that you don't get much for the price - at a regular serving "Good Day" scoop for $4.75, you get a few tiny bites if you savor it intentionally (see picture). The Honey Fig flavor was sweet and bursting with honey flavor. There was a crisp element to the gelato which was an interesting surprise. They are located in the dessert section in the first floor of Ponce City Market. There was a short line when we went for lunch on a Sunday. The line moved quickly and they let you sample flavors. Price is as expected for gelato. There's always a crowd on the weekends so expect it to be a little hectic in the market. I don't know jack about gelato. I'm 41, and this is the first time I've ever tried the stuff. So I'm not exactly the voice of credibility here. I keep hearing that it's the eccentric Italian cousin of the ice cream family. Something about it being frozen differently, being a little richer, or being handled more carefully than the American ice cream we scarf on the reg. It's supposed to be a little special, a little more precious, you know? If you actually live in ATL, Ponce City Market is the place you go once a quarter unless you're hosting guests (then it's a slam dunk afternoon with mee-maw). The good part about once-in-a-while visits is that there is some turnover with the food spots, and there's usuually something new to try. HG occupies a central suite in the market's bottom floor, and is friendly looking with the subway tile and stainless decor (very new South). The flavors are proudly displayed in the chest freezer at eyeball height. I ordered a few small cups for my family (pictured). Two choccys, a coffee, and a pistachio. My kids scarfed theirs without thinking about it. I took my time and tried to educate myself a little. I'm a pistachio liker; and it's one of those classic Italian flavors that usually show up as neon green. This one was a little more true to reality, an honest tan with nutty pieces floating around. I think the texture was very nice. Honestly, these small cups are enough to top you off if it's a dessert situation. The product is pretty rich. The company website lists a few social responsibility commitments, including food insecurity, immigrant affairs and job training. It's nice when mundane food products have a conscience. Walking through Ponce, I was wondering if Honeysuckle was still alive and well during this crazy time. We stopped by their usual location only to see that it had relocated to the outside patio area where they seemed to have opened up a stand alone shack/stand. I was looking forward to gelato, but because of COVID-19, Honeysuckle now just sells prepackaged items. After a little bit of disappointment I was thinking that anything they sell should be good. We got the strawberry shortcake cone and it was alright. I'm not the biggest fan of cones, as I like gelato in a cup. Less messier. Thus, I wish that there still was pre-packaged cups which would probably remind me of elementary school where they offered that to you. But with gelato. How awesome would that be? Anyways, going back to the shortcake. I thought it was a little bit of a let down. I think it's very possible for Honeysuckle to offer the gelato outdoors, but I can see the challenges of making it and having it out there. I'll probably stay away from Honeysuckle, as the prepackaged items are mediocre and not what Honeysuckle is known for. I'll come back when they offer cups of gelato (whenever that will be...
