Beware of using this contractor and keep your eyes wide open. While the actual work was good, there were a bunch of red lights. Rod is your classic unethical sales person. First, Rod is a liar. He said he had a Register of Contractors, (ROC) number. Well he has a number but it is suspended. While he told me it was used for warranty as he did not have any warranty on his work, getting any payout for bad work from the recovery fund is nearly impossible. Once we agreed on the project, he said the materials would be ordered the day after the check cleared the bank. Another little lie. The check cleared the bank on a Friday. He said the check cleared on the following Monday, yet another little lie. He wanted the installer to come by and look at the project before the material was ordered. Rod said the installer, Mike, would be by on Tuesday. Another lie. He did come by on Tuesday a week later. While Rod knew of the delay he did not communicate this at all. Rod said it was not necessary for Mike to review the project, another little lie, as it was necessary for Mike to see the site as he made some changes. So already a week behind the promised schedule. Mike sent me a text about 25 minutes before he was going to show up, not enough time in advance. Good thing I was home. Material was ordered and came in and I worked with Mike to set an install date. Rod, while he wanted to take credit for the date, was not at all involved in that discussion. We set the date however MIke wanted to do it a day early and gave us a day's notice that he wanted to come early. It was fortunate we were going to be home. Mike did an excellent job and we are happy with the completed project. Communication with Rod. the perceived owner was dismal. He only wanted to talk when there was money involved. His credibility is very low in my experience. read more

I asked Rod for a quote for some landscaping/backyard work and he was quick to provide awesome ideas and recommendations I hadn't even considered, and an estimate that was within my budget. During my due diligence in trying to familiarize myself with his company's services, I read through some of these Yelp reviews and got a little concerned. I brought up the negative ones in a conversation with Rod - wanted to talk about it before I hired his company to install a large awning and replace loose rock with pavers in our backyard. It was a fairly big expense and I wanted to be sure I could trust him to see the job through in a timely manner - some of these reviews gave me pause, and I knew I couldn't be on site for the entirety of the project, so I was needing to put my trust in a company to do the job without my eyes on it. He assured me that several of these reviews aren't even for his company, and gave me his word that they would take excellent care of our property and deliver amazing service. He was 100% true to his word, our awning is beautiful, the patio looks fantastic, and the SERVICE - incredible. The team showed up early, communicated well, got the job done in the timeline expected, tidied up after themselves and went above and far beyond to take care of me and keep me informed since I wasn't on site for the project. Seriously, they were great! We bought a home that is 17 years old. The backyard needed some updating. There was a step down bbq pit area next to the pool that probably looked great back in the day, but today was just a waste of space. Rod and his team came in, tore down the old structure, filled the area, and laid beautiful stone pavers. They were prompt - showed up when they said they would, fast - had the job done a day early, thorough - paid attention to the little details, and cleaned up when they were done. The next day, we found a crack in one of the stone pavers, I called Rod and he sent someone the same day to replace it. I would highly recommend Xtreme backyards. We will use them again!! Do not use this company unless you are prepared to be given lies and bullshit by the owner! We sought out three different quotes and went with Rod because he could start the project months sooner. Project started quickly and then abruptly halted. For weeks he made promises to us telling us one excuse after another about why nothing was being done, and about difficulty in getting materials from the manufacturer. This we discovered was nothing but a lie. Everything was always someone else's fault and out of his hands. It was one lie after another. Project was a month and a half past due according to the contract he signed with us when we threatened legal action before he finally sent a subcontractor to finish our pergola. While we have no complaints (so far) with the work that was done, I would never use them again or recommend them to anyone read more

Rod listened to our vision for our new home's backyard and quickly translated that vision using his spray paint can onto the ground along with his additional suggestions. It wasn't a huge job by many standards: 920 sq ft travertine patio, custom five foot gas fire pit, 19 tons granite, 8 tons mounding, various boulders, plants and irrigation. Work began on schedule and, under the expert eye of his very able foreman Ryan, progressed according to plan. This was a $250,000 backyard project. XTreme backyards owner, Rod Reid had $57,000 of that contract. XTreme Backyards came as a recommendation from a trusted friend, whom I believe had no idea of the issues that seem to trend throughout the multiple reviews here on Yelp. BBQ Island, propane lines, fire pit, 4,000 sq ft of tile... all was under XTreme backyards care. RESULT: Over two months of delays, causing issues for our pool and Ramada contractor to be able to complete their work on time. Lack of owner oversight, due in part to owners prioritize Timon of his high school football coaching before oversight of XTreme Backyard contractors and construction. Failure to receive any design drawings to confirm designs and layouts other than pencil sketches. Lack of permits for construction work. Lack of license to install propane lines. Multiple AZROC complaints that had to be repaired. Requests for payments to be made via personal checks instead of to the company, and numerous lies about work completed. Thousands of dollars spent to correct work that was not to code or for damaged construction. As other reviews stated, XTreme Backyards has a great salesman who is personable up front. However, his love for and time spent coaching high school football prevent him from oversight required to create a professional product. His word was not trustworthy. Perhaps the company can handle a smaller, one or two day job. However, we would never recommend XTreme Backyards for a quality, custom, high end project such as the one we contracted for. read more

Time and time again we've been told by Extreme Backyard's owner, Rod, that he or a member of his crew would come by at a certain time to correct or fix something that wasn't done right the first time. With the current issue, the stain and sealer that was put on our concrete bar (just installed in March of this year) is flaking off. This was no fault of theirs; the product was bad. It's been over three weeks since we let Rod know there was a problem. After numerous missed appointments, and just as many excuses, we're still waiting. We have another appointment this morning, so perhaps all the stars will align and he'll show up. But then, there's not much motivation since he was paid in full over three months ago. When we first met with Rod, we were impressed with his ideas and the fact that he gave us a firm start and completion date. Making that date may have been at the expense of "attention to details". Rod prides himself on not doing any advertising. The majority of his business is by word of mouth, and there's a booth at the Mesa Market. Yelp speaks loudly. read more

We were very impressed with the owner, Rod, initially. He had offered valuable ideas/alternatives to the project we were considering and said he could have it completed quicker than our 2 previous quotes. However, it didn't take long to see that he was basically good at the sales aspect of his business and that was about it. We caught him in several small lies, and even caught him talking bad to his crew about us. As I have seen in other reviews, he often had to reschedule meetings because he "accidentally double-booked" appointments or some other excuse. The work done was mediocre, there are things we are not happy with and things that are already falling apart after only a couple months, but we would rather hire someone else to fix it than deal with them again. read more

Think twice before you use this company. Hold off final payment until you are 100% sure they have finished and it is acceptable to you. They did a concrete counter top for our outdoor grill and it was NOT leveled. We didn't notice until less than a week later that we have a 'pool' towards the back of the concrete top. I have called and emailed several times and have been completely ignored. I don't recommend them and will never use them again. I will also notify BBQ Island of their unprofessional behavior in hopes that they drop them from their recommendations. I have to agree with others and their review. We just had our backyard kitchen completed and experienced delay after delay to complete what was a 10 day project and it took 45 days and no good explanation why. Rod would tell us someone would be here and then they didn't show up. Didn't appear there was much communication between Rod and his crew. Details we requested and included in the contract with Rod but were overlooked. We used our existing BBQ and the counter was built wrong and you couldn't open the lid all the way. Rod offered to sell us a new BBQ at a really good price (insert sad face here). They did resolve the issue just took more time to get them out here to resolve. Rod only came to the house to sell and pick up his checks. Rod asked for final payment before installing the refrigerator and access door. During the course of the work several items in our backyard were broken by the crew and not replaced. If you are looking for a totally frustrating experience then by all means go for it. If your are looking for a honest, dependable company that provides good customer service then keep looking. read more

My wife and I hired Rod to turn our drive around backyard into a place to enjoy and entertain. We got off on a delayed start because of Pinal Country and the permit process, but from the day the pool was started to water in the pool and landscape complete was 28 days! We now have an oasis and get outstanding comments from friends and family. Rod and his employees were all friendly and open to questions during the process. Started out well, Rod was a great salesman and promised more for the price of other bids and timeline as well. Then it went downhill from there. He took our first check and it was weeks before they finally broke ground. Overtime we found out that Rod was using our money to fund other jobs and our schedule was off and continued to get worse. He doesn't return texts or phone calls unless he is looking to get paid. They had to redo things over and over because honestly he talks a great game but can't deliver. In some cases discussions became heated over things that were just horribly built. If he put the time into his work instead of his appearance and talking about how he works out 2 times a day, my project may have not ran over the due date by 3 1/2 months. The only thing Xtreme about his business is extreme lack of desire to get the job done and the extremely poor quality. Even his subs are bailing on him and refusing to do future work.
