From the first time I've tried it, this place has always been one of my favorite places to go to for ramen and salmon onigiri. I have noticed over the years that the bowls seem smaller and less food than when I first came where portion sizes were so much I would have to force myself to finish it lol. We had take out and the service was great. The food has greatly degraded though--very disappointed. The Takoyaki is tiny--half the size it used to be, only 1 tiny bit of octopus in each, and as they slightly cooled they collapsed. The egg rolls are gross--it's mostly all wrapper and doughy on the inside, clearly mass manufactured and cheaply too with barely a hint of cabbage and tiny bit of carrot in it. The Karaage was not as good as it used to be, and the curry was awful when it used to be delicious. The chicken Omurice was still delicious with lots of chicken chunks and the portion was much larger, but that's not enough to bring us back again. read more

The customer service here is hit or miss. There's one particular female older staff that works there that is always so sweet! Been here a few times, the karagge chicken is a hit. Depends on your waiter if you get good service or lack thereof. Last time I went, the female waiter took out order and that was that! I had to ask for more food when they came to give us the food and get up and ask for napkins. So, the experience makes me more inclined to not eat here as much. Had supper here again. Group of 4 tonight. We were sit immediately and service was great as always. We all had water to drink. They do have a decent selection of Japanese beers as well as plum wines. After a long cold day we all just wanted food. Huge serving met the need. Two shrimp fried rice, 1 Tempura and another dish I do not remember. Table split two rolls and tuna dish as appetizers. This place is quite popular as I had to come back twice to try it and it didn't disappoint. I've been trying to find a restaurant that sold Takoyaki since 2019 and this is the only one I've encountered that has it! I've had Takoyaki in Japan and Yakitori house version is equally as good, the only thing missing is bonito flakes. They aren't stingy with the octopus portion! Their sushi was delicious and fresh, and I ordered their Okinawa soba as my main dish. The soba was alright, I personally wouldn't order it again as the meat wasn't great. It's a small portion and dry, I would switch out the meat choice for this dish and it would make it much more enjoyable. I recommend their katsudon if you love any variation of fried chicken. Service is EXCELLANT, our waitress was so sweet and always was on it for water refills! Restaurant is small, so expect to be somewhat close to other customers. It feels like an authentic Japanese restaurant. I look forward to being back to try their curry katsu. read more

The absolute best food in Jacksonville, North Carolina. This is my favorite restaurant in the state of North Carolina. Only complaint is I wish they were open more days of the week and I wish I could go there for lunch as a construction worker. It's nice to go eat there for lunch, but for some reason they stop doing that but it's OK. It's so well worth going whenever they are open and I'm sure they have their reasons and that's OK But man this place is amazing. I love the cleanliness. I had ordered deep fried calamari served with YumYum sauce. Fried to perfection, large piece rings and the YumYum sauce paired was excellent . My main dish was Bento Box which consisted of: Teriyaki salmon, Egg Roll, a strip of chicken yakitori, vegetable tempura, a scoop of rice, cucumber roll, gyoza, seaweed salad and fruit (grapes). The meal was excellent and portions were large. I sat at the counter and watched the cooks in the kitchen prepare. So organized and efficient was all the food being cooked and brought out to customers. There were many take-out customers as well. There was a giant TV for the counter diners to watch or you could view the chefs preparing dishes. I've been coming here for many years. The menu has much to choose from. The Japanese country items are excellent. Raw fish was fresh, not fishy tasting. Never had a bad experience . Although some wait staff were not very social or smiley. Food is tasty, but depending on the time, it does get extremely packed to the point you get put on a waiting list (usually on the weekends from 6 pm to closing) i noticed on the weekdays it is noticeably less full but still somewhat busy, but you'll still get a table. My favorite appetizer here is the takoyaki, and i usually go for the ramen (any type of ramen here is solid ESPECIALLY on a cold day.) Hole in the wall Japanese restaurant with nothing to offer. Let me preface this by saying that I have been to Japan and lived in southern California where awesome Asian cuisine abounds. Thus, I know my experience and subsequent expectations when it comes to Japanese food are much different from those who were born and raised here. That being said, this place was absolutely terrible. Surprisingly, we went here on recommendation of a Japanese woman working at the affiliated market next door who said that the food at this spot was reminiscent of home, especially the ramen. But not being in a ramen mood, we tried a variety of other dishes with high hopes and were acutely disappointed. The beef tataki was nothing like actual beef tataki, it wasn't seared but almost completely cooked through and through with a bit of pink on some pieces. The yakitori (both beef and chicken) were okay, but way too saucy. The shumai was absolutely gross, it tasted as if it came straight from a freezer. That being said, I was surprised they had the yellow mustard (which we had to ask for) that usually accompanies shumai. The takoyaki was one of the only things in our experience to taste decent, but the minuscule piece of octopus in each one was extremely disappointing. The karaage seemingly was neither cooked nor served in the traditional way -- the breading was off and it was served with yum yum sauce rather than Japanese mayo as it should be. Maybe our party screwed up by not ordering the ramen or curry; but considering the quality of the other dishes, I am not too keen to believe that they are truly delicious as recommended. Either way, I will not be returning to test them out. In terms of COVID-19 safety, the staff was wearing masks and social distancing seems to be enforced; but that's all I have to say in terms of that. In conclusion, this Japanese place is not worth the trip at all. I don't believe I've ever rated a restaurant with one star, but I, unfortunately, cannot find any redeeming qualities of this place to warrant a higher review. read more

If you want tasty, authentic Japanese specialties prepared by authentic Japanese people at reasonable prices, you want to go to Yakitori House. This place reminds me of some of the modest, working-class joints I've visited in Japan. My cousin's family owned a ramen and gyoza shop near a train station and there's thousands of these types of places across the country. You don't go to Yakitori House for the lovely decor; it's for the great food. Many Japanese restaurants in the USA aren't run by Japanese owners. I've seen some Korean and Chinese proprietors offering Japanese cuisine, and sometimes it's pretty good but more often it's pretty mediocre. I don't know who owns Yakitori House but the flavors are spot on in their dishes, so I'm guessing the family here is Japanese and probably Okinawan seeing some of the featured items on the menu. The gyoza is a good example to start. The dumplings have the right shape and texture, and the fillings (pork, vegetable) are seasoned as they should be. The preparation is pan-seared or deep-fried. Pan fried is the way you'll get them. The restaurant's namesake dish, yakitori, is sized properly on skewers and grilled to perfection with a light sauce. Ramen is another great choice with fresh noodles to which scallions, hard-boiled egg, meat, vegetables, and a slice of kamaboko (Japanese fish-cake) floating atop the delicious broth. Cooked entrees are very good. The shrimp tempura is lightly battered and fried to a crisp and tender finish. Tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) can be had with chopped, shredded cabbage or served with an egg and onions atop a bed of steaming rice (katsudon). Fried oysters are just cooked enough and are not at all greasy. The menu has a lot of variety with all sorts of traditional Japanese items. If sushi is your desire, you can have nigiri (individual slices of fish on a seasoned rice ball) or maki (rolls). The nigiri is absolutely fresh as it should be and generously portioned. I've tried the California roll (beautifully dusted with tobiko-smelt roe) and the spicy shrimp tempura roll so far and found them to be excellent. The selection isn't as extensive as you might find elsewhere but what is offered is all expertly prepared. Even better is the fact that the prices here are all very reasonable and affordable. The service here is attentive and friendly. The dining room is nothing fancy but if you crave good Japanese food, Yakitori House should be on your list of places to visit in Jacksonville. For a small restaurant, they really do good job on their food. Ingredients they use are very nice. For their sushi, they use top quality short grain rice (CA koshihikari) unlike other small japanese restaurants use medium grain. My go-to menu here is Sushi deluxe and chicken karaage!
