This is a nice mid size museum at the edge of the Yale campus. We spent about two hours here. It has everything from sculptures to modern art pieces. The current exhibit on Indonesian textiles was very interesting. I also enjoyed the many pieces from Picasso and Kandinsky. They even have a Calder mobile. We also enjoyed the William Blake exhibit with his poems and prints. The staff was nice and friendly. The museum was clean and their map flyer really helped us navigate through the many rooms. Free admittance and free lockers are provided in the basement for our big purses, coats, and water bottles. read more

I was so impressed by this gallery. I've been all over New York. The MET. The Brooklyn Museum (which I still adore). Galleries all over the city. I've been to the biggest museums in Philly, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, all throughout the south, etc. Yale Art Gallery is fantastic, AND the oldest college art museum in America (I reviewed the oldest continually operating public art museum, The Wadsworth, also in Connecticut, separately). First, again remembering I've been to soooo many museums, this museum may have the best arranged and most diverse African art collection I've seen. They also have a small Asian and Pacific Islander section, European art (multiple rooms, spanning 1200-1850), modern and contemporary art. Medieval, ancient arts, photography. Tons of American decorative arts (furniture, design, even some reconstructed early American rooms). They also have rotating exhibits. The rotating exhibit on during my visit was beautiful. The Dance of Life: Figure and Imagination in American Art 1876-1917. It was full of delicate lines, soft strokes, colors alternating between intense and light pastel. Sculpture, sketches. And because this era was about artists helping the country recover hope after the Civil War, it gave me a little hope about the current dark times in which we live. It's huge, diverse, sprawling. The staff were helpful and kind. Bright and open. Well displayed. And it's FREE! I took a three night trip up here from New York. Connecticut isn't exactly a playground, but places like this made it worth it. read more

Our first stop at Yale was the Art gallery. We arrived right when they opened, line was short, FREE entry, no outside food or drink are allowed. This is such a humongous place, impossible to tell from outside. It spreads over 5 floors but most of the attractions are in 1st to 3rd floors. Amazing collection of ancient African, Asian, European and American civilization arts and crafts. There are so many paintings of contemporary and modern arts. The art gallery also has beautiful ceilings designed by Louis Khan. Souvenir goods, art books and postcards are available on 1st floor lobby. The floor supervisors are very strict in the gallery. One of them asked my kid to not to run around. Another person asked me to not to video, even though there was no sign about not to video. Another time I was told to stay with my kid, even though she was just walking to her mom. Not a friendly place to visit with kids, especially if they are under 8. read more

This is a great art gallery to visit while in New Haven. The admission is free and there are 4 floors to see anything from American Art before 1900, European Art to Modern and Contemporary Art. I was surprised to see some works by Matisse, Pollock and Picasso on the gallery walls. read more

Very big & beautiful art museum with free entry. With that being said, part of me feels it was hard to enjoy with how head-ass the security is there. Most of these items are humongous and the security didn't want my mom to have her fanny pack in front or in back of her but the side. ( Greek floor ) I felt like they were implying potential theft. With everything being so protected or big, you couldn't possibly steal anything. Then on the next floor the security guard said I wasn't allowed to point at the paintings...lol. Sure whatever then on next floor after that had this big mural made of bottle caps and we got close trying to read the individual bottle caps and the security guard told us to back up when we were still a great distance away from the mural. VERY GLAD THIS PLACE IS FREE BECAUSE IF I WOULDVE PAID TO GET IN THERE I WOULDVE BEEN EVEN MORE IRRITIATED. I absolutely understand that we are not entitled to having free access and it is a privilege but to follow and stalk us throughout the museum like we are thieves or something is ridiculous. Came here on a Tuesday around 11:00am no wait to get in. Street paid parking around so good luck lol. It is free but employees were strict. Have to leave bag in a locker before go in. And you can not record a full room each room has an employee. Went to all room briefly wished I could've stayed longer. But honestly one of the best art galleries I've been too! Such a variety of histories from US history to ancient times. It was cool it see details up close. The gallery was way bigger than I thought so plenty to see. As a free entry I feel fortunate that this resource is available to all. There are opportunities to have guided tours or to visit on your own. This museum is picture perfect and has so much to offer. Everything from contemporary art, European art, Asian art, numismatics, statues, and literally so much more. The museum covers 4 floors in this clearly historic building with winding staircases that evoke the feeling of being in the Hogwartz castle... just cleaner. The museum is free and the place is quite big. You could easily spend a whole afternoon exploring it's entirety. The collections are of all different types of mediums. There's marble statues, there's a ton of beautiful pottery, there are clothing pieces, weapons, portraits, paintings, contemporary sculpture and the list just goes on and on. If I could criticize anything, I would say that the "gift shop" which is really just a handful of merch that is located around the entrance front desk is a bit sparse, but I don't think I can really judge a museum by the size of the gift shop. Especially when the collection was so rich and curated so wonderfully. This is a truly special place and I'd highly suggest paying a visit if you're in the New Haven area. Remember... it's free. Note: If you're carrying a large bag or backpack they'll ask you to carry it in front of you for safety purposes (so maybe just leave it in the car/at home). read more

Admission is free so might as well take advantage of it and learn a thing or two. Inside is very organized and beautiful. Lots of different forms of art to see and appreciate which is actually fun. Who knew the legendary artists of the impressionism and the Post-impressionism era house some of their art work right here in New Haven? Yes, I just learned this today. The Yale University Art Gallery is a very large museum, that is sure to impress any art lover. This wasn't a planned trip to the art gallery, we parked right right in front of it, when I noticed the flashing words, "free admission". First we srarted with the African art. What a remarkable collection of sculptures. I could easily spend hours analyzing and admiring the figurines and sculptures. Next we went to the Ancient Mediterranean Gallery. These pieces and the layout made me feel like I'm in Ancient Greece. Then we went to the floor with European Art. This was my favorite. Here we saw very identifiable works by Monet, Van Gogh, and of course plenty of others. There were still three more floors of a variety of art to view. This was it for today. I highly recommend a visit to the Yale University Art Gallery. The very friendly security and staff will happily guide you to see whatever you might be most interested in. We dropped into this Gallery before we left for Napa Valley and found a hidden gem. This art gallery and correct me if I'm wrong is the oldest art gallery that is in a University in North America. The University is located in New Haven CT which is literally less than a 30 minute drive for me from NYC without traffic. They have a lot of Italian Renaissance paintings and African sculptures as well as many other varied art especially in the modern era. The history is that it started in the early 19th century and of course increased in size to present day. I viewed some nice George Washington paintings as well as a nice portrait of the Brooklyn bridge from 1920 just to name a few. A lot of ancient art as well as art by Picasso. I would recommend this one day visit to anyone who appreciates art! read more

Fantastic art museum! Free, great hours, lots to see. I stopped in after appts at Yale New Haven Health and it was super close and in a great area, right in the Yale college area. The docent/security guard was watching my mother and I like a hawk and telling us to keep our distance from the art over and over (when we already were) so that was annoying and detracted. But the art variety, quality of the collection, and convenience were fantastic. I'll definitely be coming back to see more sections that we didn't have time to view. I liked that it was not crowded so you had ample time with each piece. Highly recommend this museum! Tip--when you're there, on the first floor, look up, the geometric ceiling is a work of art itself--it's gorgeous! read more

Ever since being a young child in elementary school, field trips to the Yale art gallery have been an annual event. To this day, I enjoy visiting ever so often. It is still free and open to the public Tuesday through Sunday. They always have a variety of interesting exhibits and I learn some thing new every time I go. There are currently two amazing new exhibits. The first one is Crafting Worldviews: Art and Science in Europe, 1500-1800 which examines the relationship among art, science, and European colonialism from the 16th through the 18th century. The brass, ivory, mahogany, and ebony works featured are remarkable. They have an exquisite design and intricate construction. The other new exhibit is Thinking Small: Dutch Art to Scale has an intriguing collection of objects from the 17th-century Netherlands that features small-scale works. With the global expansion of Dutch commerce, diagrams and maps miniaturized large geographic areas, and botanical books show their study of the natural world. If you haven't been to this museum in a while, it is worth the trip. You can definitely see and learn fascinating, historic elements you would have to research for years and here you can find it all in one location. read more

First of all, let me say the best part about this museum: it is free!!!! You can just walk in!! Not only is it free, but they have a lot of amazing art. There is art from many places in the world, and from many time periods. The building is also really beautiful. It's old, it has lots of beautiful windows, it has beautiful staircases, etc. You could totally spend all day exploring this building and learning about all the art. Finally, it's pretty well staffed. There are employees in most of the rooms. There is also a gift shop! And lockers to put your stuff in (you cannot bring water bottles into the museum, but you can leave them in a locker). read more

This place has so much to look at you can spend a day in here. I fell in love with so many art pieces , I wish I had more time. Speaking to the workers and getting more personal information was such a nice touch. The ambiance was so well thought out with the dimmed lighting. If you're into art (of any kind) you have to check out the Yale Art Gallery in New Haven! First off, admission is completely FREE to anyone. You're not even required to show ID or sign-in. Once inside, you'll be able to explore the 250,000+ items on display, ranging from ancient Greek and Roman statues, to Renaissance paintings, to modern and contemporary art. You'll even see works by famous artists like Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Pablo Picasso. Before I visited, I thought this would just be a small gallery I could walk through in an hour or so... but I was wrong! I spent about 2.5-3 hours inside and there was still more to see! Parking is on-street only (metered) or you'll have to find a garage nearby. Overall this is an amazing (and free) spot to spend an afternoon before heading to dinner at one of New Haven's many great restaurants! read more

Few things in life are free but a visit to the Yale University Art Gallery is! I ignorantly expected a small collection of art pieces. I was blown away not just by the architecture of the building and rooms in which the art is housed, but by the sizeable and comprehensive array of art pieces from ancient times to modern art. My favourites were on the upper floors, including pieces from Picasso, Dali, Duchamp, and Kiefer's The Unborn. While a few hours will allow you to view everything, we needed a second visit to truly take in our favourite pieces and take in the modern design pieces on the 4th floor. The Yale University Art Gallery is truly a gem worth visiting! read more

I was only in town for 2 days. I only had an hour to spare before my flight out. I hurried over and was at the door when they opened. I asked the information counter what was the most interesting thing to see with limited time? They have a few exhibits that are most see. I picked the European art on the 2nd floor. When you walk in, you're faced with Asian artifacts from the 800s. These are some of the oldest things I have ever seen in person. Very cool. You can't get any closer to this kind of art. You continue through the exhibit, and there is a "WOW" piece of art around every corner. It's so amazing how talented the artists were so long ago. Some of the canvas art looked like a picture. When you get to the last room, you see the prized possessions of this museum. Monet, Van Gogh, Degas and Cezanne. I've had to go to the Met in NY to see some of these artists. Again, you will never get this close. My time is up, but I will be back to finish the visit. This is a must. I recommend. read more

I smell rowing team scandal, or some other athletic scam mixed with misconduct. Just saying... and if you think that I am just crazy, consider the following additionally: excavations of Native American sacred sites are being performed without Native American tribes permission, and the artifacts are ending up in these museums through a long series of loopholes. Now, I did not say it is the case for this museum, but it is the case for many others. However, where is the proof that these items were gifted by another nation to this Art Gallery? Or where is the proof that these items were removed with permission from their countries/sites of origin? Yeah, the museum biz is fishy AF. This is apparently the oldest college art museum in the United States! Very impressive :) I'd wanted to come here all term and finally made it! I was a bit overwhelmed beforehand thinking how long it would take to see everything but it ended up being really fun (and coming with friends helped). I still spent 1-2 hours here. Lots to see! Around 4 floors. There's African art and ancient Greek art and sculptures on the first floor; then older European art of second floor; modern art on the 4th floor (Edward Hopper, Basquiat, Mark Rothko); collections of coins (numismatics ^^), Asian art, anddd - lots of people's favorites - Gaughin, Van Gogh, Renoir and Monet (and more!) collection too. *Very* impressive, diverse, interesting and fun to visit museum! A great job for Yale, and they keep it free and open for everyone in the area to visit :) read more

Wonderful little gem. Has great African Art collection. Hailing from an erstwhile British colony, it's weird for me to look at similar colonies' art from pre-colonial era and wonder what would have happened if Britain didn't get that greedy and plunder all these countries, but I guess we'll never know. Until then we have beautiful relics like the ones here to look at and appreciate what we have. The sculptures are super artsy as well, even if some of them have lost their noses which always makes an ignoramus like me giggle in art museums. Anyway, great place. Got yelled at by one for pointing at the art, about two feet away from the piece and after she hovered and wouldn't let us enjoy the rest of the exhibit. Most folks trek to New Haven to visit Frank's pizzeria. I've heard there is a small university that is quite popular, too. I always come to town for this gallery because it rivals many major art museums in the United States. Certainly, along with Harvard's museum to the north, no university art museums come close in encyclopedic depth and breadth. Iconic 20th century works line the walls, the African collection is stellar and well displayed, small rooms of fascinating Old Masters can keep one from having time to see anything else, the Greek and Roman galleries are housed in fitting limestone-lined spaces, and the 21st century is already well-represented. A few works usually stay in my mind on most of my visits to art museums. The Giacometti sculptures and drawings here are probably my favorites. A few other museums have his 'Hands Holding the Void' in almost black bronze versions. The 1934 white plaster version reveals so much more detail and the delicate hands of the figure. While I have yet to get into Frank's crazy busy pizzeria after a number of attempts over the years and the Yale admissions office would certainly close the door to my poor academic record, at least I know I can return to this museum and get in anytime. If you live in the tri-state area and haven't been here, it's time to add this place to your list. read more

This gallery is a must for any New Haven visit, and even better is that the admission is free! The gallery is deceptively large, but the layout is simple with clear maps. We also had some brief encounters with the security guards, who not only do their job but can sometimes also talk about the art. During my most recent visit, I spent a bit of time viewing the modern and contemporary art rooms. There are multiple Picassos and Mondrians. For those of you who don't like "super way out there" art, this gallery keeps those pieces to a minimum. There's an outdoor sculpture garden that would be nice to peruse in better weather. I plan to come more often in the new year. This gallery is not to be missed! read more
