I've purchased at Yamada to support small business, especially during Covid. The quality is not great - my sofa bed broke within 4 years. But I still went back today, again, to support small business. Wow, It was unbelievable how completely uninterested in helping me the salesman was. I don't know his name - he was taller, older, with a gold chain on his neck. Every question I asked was met with flat "I don't know" or "maybe in the next shipment". He was unhelpful, clearly did not care if I found what I was looking for or not. There are other local businesses that need support. Yamada definitely has had enough of mine. read more

The most terrible customer service I have received anywhere. I drove 70 miles from Kona side to visitvthe store and asked to use the restroom. I was told that the owners had a strict policy of not allowing this and I should walk down the road to the KTA. Of course I walked out of the store and didn't return. If a store has "policies" that are so blatantly inconsiderate of customer needs, imagine what to expect if one ever has an issue after sales. read more

Aloha! I absolutely LOVE the furniture that I bought at Yamada Furniture store. I worked with Bryce on the deliveries, transactions, and picking out pieces for my home. Bryce was very easy to work with, had valuable information to share regarding each piece (where it was made, company reputations, materials, etc.) and shared with me easy ways to care for each piece. To be honest, if you like to shop without being asked a million questions and like being treated with respect go to Yamada Furniture and ask for Bryce! :) He communicated well, sent a follow-up email to see how I was liking the furniture, swapped out my credenza for a different color without any hassle at all, partnered with the owners on looking at a small discount due to a small defect on my velvet peacock sofa (because I'm very particular), and thoroughly checked and cleaned all pieces before they were delivered to my home (delivery teams were extremely professional as well) in which he found a flaw on one of the pillowcases and ordered me a new one (which I hadn't even noticed at first). Overall, I would continue to go back to Yamada Furniture if they continue to bring in and/or carry more "understated luxurious" pieces for the home. We were looking for bedroom furniture so we did the temperature check and the wearing of gloves. We also had my granddaughter who is 2 years old. We go into the store looking around and no one helped us at all. We didn't know where to look. They just stared at us without offering to help us. I than said to my husband I don't want to buy anything from here. Why should we buy from someone who could care less about their customers. This place has a huge showroom! I was like a kid in a candy store checking out every piece of furniture. Mahea went above and beyond to make sure I found the right item. So happy this furniture store is on island and is keeping up with the new trends of mid century modern pieces. I love my new side table from them. I had a great time talking story with Mahea! Such great customer service- the piece I wanted had a an odd coloration on it so the warehouse staff found the other one in stock and built it for me right then and there. Loved their safety protocols for COVID too- quick survey, temperature check, gloves, hand sanitizer and contact tracing!! Amazing!! Thank you Mahea for making the process so enjoyable and fun. I just had the most frustrating experience when attempting to shop at Yamada furniture. Starting with finding the store. It is really well hidden, very hard to see the store from the street, almost like the owner doesn't want his store to be found. We had to go around the block a couple times before finally finding the right driveway to turn. The store was open, and their listing on google maps clearly states that the store allows in-store shipping. When we finally arrived at the location there was a surprise for us. The store doesn't allow in-store shopping. If you ask me this is really ignorant, and inconsiderate, especially for the potential clients who are driving from distant parts of the island to spend money here. The printed piece of paper at the door stated that the store is open for curbside pick up only and that the store's inventory can be seen on their website. No website was listed. I did manage to find it, I went on the website and it was really cluttered and not user friendly. I didn't see a way to see the inventory. I approached the door to ask how can I see the inventory, and the lady behind the door started frantically wave me off trying to prevent me from getting too close to the door. I wanted to just ask her how can I see the inventory, but she kept repeating something that was really hard to understand considering that she was saying it from behind the closed doors and she was masked too. After a few seconds I realized that she was saying "website, website, website" Not being able to get any help from the staff, I went back to the website determined to find a way to leave a couple thousand dollars my hard earned money at this store. We are opening a new business in Hilo, and we needed to fully furnish the waiting area. The stress free chairs that I was sure that the store was selling looked like they could do the job. Despite the frustration with their website design I was able to find the right section. Then I had to scroll down forever to find the the chairs that I wanted. Here is another surprise. There was no price listed on the website. In order to find out how much did the chair cost, I had to fill out some stupid online questionnaire. This was super frustrating, considering I was still standing at the empty parking lot on the front of Yamada Furniture and there was someone inside, although very unhelpful.. Did they really expect that after driving for an hour to the store that was listed as open for in store shopping, I would be filling out some stupid online questionnaire and wait on that parking lot until someone receives my questionnaire, and maybe calls me just to let me know if they had the Stress Free Chair in stock and let me know how much they cost? They approach to business in the post COVID-19 world is ridiculous. While I understand that the virus is scary, but there ways to make the experience more client friendly. Big Island is NOT under the lockdown, like Oahu is. First of all if the store is not open for in-store shopping it should say so on you google maps and yelp listings. Do not mislead potential clients! This is very ignorant and inconsiderate. Second, make your website user friendly. List price online and don't make clients fill out some stupid client intake forms just to see how much does an item cost. If you really cared about staying in business through this challenging times, you would open your showroom for public, and take safety precaution to keep everyone safe. There are ways to do it, like limiting the amount of clients, temperature checks, requiring of masks, social distancing and hand sanitizers. So many business are getting out of the business these days, and if you want to stay in business you have to adjust to the new reality. Needless to say, we took our money and drove to Kona to spend it elsewhere. Good job at losing a client Yamada Furniture! Keep it up and let's see how long you can stay in business with your close mind approach. UPDATE: The owner too time to respond to my review. I saw that there were a couple of 1 star reviews here but I can tell you MY 5-star experience. Of all the stores I went to, Yamada Furniture had the BEST selection and customer service was EXCELLENT. All questions I sent via messenger was answered promptly and efficiently. I went in with an appointment (due to Co-Vid) and Gareth was extremely helpful and efficient. Yes, I have walked in before with no one running up to help me but I'm fine with that, since I like to look around first with no pressure, plus that also has been my experience with other furniture stores here. We were very happy with our experience at Yamada Furniture. We showed up hoping to walk in and take a look around but we were told that it was appointment only which did not upset my husband and I at all, in fact we knew that meant the experience would be very personal when it was time to go back. We booked an appointment for a few days later and we were impressed with the professionalism of all of the staff regarding how they handled safety precautions due to COVID. You will not find another furniture store in Hilo that treats you with so much aloha!!!! Carol and the gang at Yamada furniture treat you like family and make sure to make your furniture shopping experience a great one. I've went to other furniture stores and they do not have as good of a selection and/or they are not helpful. The bf and I went to HomeWorld Furniture and we were largely ignored (I'm assuming because we look "young") which was a huge turn off -- This is one of my biggest pet peeves; when sales associates judge you by age/appearance. I have been ignored/treated rudely in other stores before because I guess I don't look like I'm "old enough" to be shopping there. Well, their loss, as I would have been a serious customer had they not treated me like that! -- Needless to say I would not go back to HomeWorld even if I did like some of the things I saw there because the customer service was poor. Anywho, I recently got a bedroom set (bed frame, night stands, dresser, mirror) for a great price from Yamada's! Carol was so nice about also showing us all the other inventory and answering any questions we had. They really go out of their way to make sure you feel comfortable and informed of your options. I recently moved from the mainland to an almost empty single family home in Kailua Kona, arriving with only a suitcase and a small crate. So I needed furniture. I think I checked out every furniture store on the Big Island at least twice. Well, at least every store in Kailua Kona and Hilo. That's how I discovered Yamada Furniture. By the way, I should add that I'm a retailer's worst nightmare. I really hate to overspend and need to consider everything before I make a decision. One of those people. Like other reviewers, I had a great experience working with Bryce. I took a lot of his time on my first visit to Yamada. We must have walked through the entire store three times, and it's a big store. He answered all my questions in detail and didn't rush me but simply made suggestions based on what I was telling him - very smart suggestions. That first visit I bought nothing, but I did go back a week later. On my second visit to Yamada I bought everything I needed for three bedrooms plus a dining table and six chairs. Yes, they have a large inventory (not easy to find on the island) and excellent prices (also difficult to find), but they also have something even harder to find: Attention To Detail. And not just during the sale but with the (free!) delivery as well. Delivery can have so many problems that the guys from Yamada deserve a very special mention for excellence. First of all they were on time. Next they were the most precise delivery team that I've ever seen. They asked where I wanted each piece (exactly where I wanted each piece) and when they were finished everything was where I wanted. And they were neat and careful. There were no marked walls or scratched floors, no little scraps of paper or plastic left around. Great Job! People on the east side of the Big Island probably already know about Yamada Furniture, but if you live on the west side like I do you should really make the drive to Hilo and check them out. For me it was definitely worth the trips. I will be going back for more furniture very soon. read more

We decided to shop around locally and didn't really find much selection. Within a short time after arriving at Yamada furniture we found the headboard with shelves that we were looking for. I strongly agree with the other reviews here on Yelp that Yamada Furniture is an outstanding company to do business with. I purchased two items from Yamada Furniture in the past several years and just purchased a Klaussner Loveseat and Sofa. Yamada Furniture stands above the rest because they genuinely wanted to find something that made me happy and gave me confidence in the pieces of furniture I was about to purchase. Other places offered me expensive "care packages" for the covers, reclining mechanisms and the warranty after 5 years, I would be "on my own." I never felt rushed; from the showroom to the delivery. Speaking of the delivery, they took the time to move, setup and to go over with me the features of the furniture, and made sure that I was happy with where the furniture was finally placed. The only bad thing I could say is that the selection is so vast that it makes it hard to decide on just one thing. To a little kid, it was like playing house in a mansion! They have lots of choices if you're looking for new furniture. Bryce was very helpful and patient with me while I looked around the store. I went there looking for a corner TV stand but they didn't have any on the floor. When I asked if they were bringing some in, they surprised me by saying that they would have some on sale soon. I saw a picture of the stand and the price but I wanted to see the actual product before I decided. Bryce said he would get one assembled and call me when it's done. I wrote a check and the lady called the bank to make sure there were funds.its been 20 years and I prefer Furnitureland. At least they don't judge you there. I never went back to Yamada after that. I Just got me a new mattress bed and a sofa. I must say I couldn't have been happier with both products. They were exactly what I was looking for and needed. The price was right and the customer service I received from Bryce was excellent, second to none. He knows the products very well and his explanation of each were easy to understand and very helpful.
