This is a homegrown, mom-and-pop operation run by folks who are really sweet and helpful. Next time I need furniture, this will definitely be the first place I look. They also carry musical instruments, but I'm not qualified to comment on those.

As of a few hours ago, I have taken delivery of a bed that was custom-made as a result of thorough collaboration with owner/craftsman Vince Wilson, and I could not be more pleased. I asked for a platform bed in which the mattress platform was 25" above floor level, with drawers beneath that extended the entire width of the bed (which supports a Twin XL mattress). That represents around 45 cubic feet of storage space, a massive amount and so important in island living situations where there is often much less square footage than I, at least, have ever had in other places I've lived on the mainland. (Not a complaint! I would pay almost any price to live in my favorite place on the planet!) Due to the unusual nature of the request, it took some time to get it done, but it was done right. I fully expect that this oh-so-worth-it investment will be one I will enjoy for many years to come. Cannot recommend Big Island Beds highly enough.

The lady was very cute and Personable as I bought the fabric from her, I saw all her sewing equipment towards the back. It turns out she had actually been to San Jose's Japantown before the Japanese store, Nichi Bei Bussan! I was very surprised at her wide selection of Japanese and Asian fabrics and they weren't too expensive either. They were anywhere from $14 a yard to $18 a yard! She did get them directly from Japan and I'm pretty sure she had a similar vendor as Nichi Bei Bussan, quite literally quadrupled in sections!! I also liked how everything was organized. She had a section for fabrics with dragons, children's prints, flowers/floral prints, traditional Japanese dots, and then another section with different thicker fabrics. I was in a bit of a rush so I didn't get to check out everything, as my teenage son was waiting out in the air condition. Lol. Nevertheless, I was able to get some very authentic Japanese fabrics and I can't wait to make something with them! She also told me that she's starting a new website besides her futon store she's going to have another website coming up and I took a picture of her page in my pictures Below. I'm really happy. The last time I was there, just before the first COVID-19 shutdown, I sat down on a bench with a futon mattress. The bench was beautiful and the mattress was so comfortable. I really wanted to lie down but knew if I did I'd miss my flight. It's a great place for larger or smaller gifts for others - or for yourself. But the big test came recently. I really, really need to get rid of my 18 year old innerspring mattress. It was now too hard for me and worn out and I'd wake up with terrible shoulder, back, and hip pain. My knees are already trashed and the old mattress made things worse. I called and ordered a 4" New Zealand wool futon mattress. (Three inches of filling is standard, but you can add more.) Including shipping to Honolulu, the price was certainly in line with what a standard mattress would have cost. There was a bit of a backlog because demand was high. The mattress was really well-protected and arrived without a blemish. I'd kept my old box spring and put the futon mattress on it. I put on a mattress protector before putting on the sheets. It's really difficult to find sheets that are small enough for a 4" mattress, but I made it work. The first night I didn't sleep well only because I was so freaked out that after buying the new mattress I wouldn't sleep any better. Fortunately I was wrong. By the second night my sleep was much better. I woke with almost no pain in my shoulders or back. Less pain in my knees and right hip. (My knees hurt because of severe arthritis and my right hip hurts indirectly because of the arthritis.) I'm so glad I was able to get this futon mattress from Dragon Mama.

I looked around their small showroom and didn't see it. Kellie, their FANTASTIC sales manager, greeted me and she explained that that particular make/model was discontinued. After seeing my disappointment she said, "But...in the FurnitureLand showroom next door, we have exactly ONE of those. It's the floor model. Left over from our clearance sale last October (five months ago). And it's 70% off." SEVENTY-PERCENT OFF!!! So...the $1325 bed I had budgeted for ended up being $397!!! Can't thank Kellie enough, she could've been shady and tried to steer me into a new more expensive choice, but she paid attention to what my needs were and genuinely helped me out. What works here: At least during our visits, the store was well stocked. This actually shocked me because holy shit, it makes no difference whether you are here on a weekday/weekend/noon/15 minutes before closing, they are always, always, always packed. Bizarre mix of a store that is not an old school 80's style Walmart but it's also not a Supercenter either as the store does not have enough square footage. With that said, there is certainly a little of this and a little of that in here. Pharmacy? Sure New cell phone plus a service provider for it? Yep Garden Center? Of course McD's for a greasing? Naturally Eye Exam? Why not Booze? Duh There is also the usual mix of clothing, office crap, basic sporting gear, an aisle of "local" favorites and while not a full grocery store/experience - there is more here than what you would think. What doesn't work here: Checking out can be tough due to said crazy busyness. Also note that they don't do shopping bags here in the traditional sense so BYO on that one. The parking lot situation is an insurance claim adjuster's wet dream. People walking from all sides & directions like mindless zombies. Cars coming from multiple entrance/exit points. Other strip mall stores like Gamestop/Domino's/Ross also use the same parking lot. It's a lot. You find religion before each backup attempt. Open daily from 6am-11pm and if this doesn't cut it for you, there is a Safeway and a Target around the corner.

The team at BedMart provide excellent customer service! Our salesperson Chris is knowledgeable about the mattresses and what type of mattress is most suitable for our body type and sleeping position. We never felt that he was trying to sell us a mattress. He was more interested in educating us first before making a final decision on a significant purchase. Once we made our selection, he was diligent about finding us the best price for the entire package. We appreciated his flexibility, responsiveness, follow-up and positive demeanor. On days that Chris was not in the store, his friendly co-workers Ging and Karen were just as ready to assist us. It is evident they treat one another like family and it is nice to see them take care of one another. Once it was time for the mattress to be delivered, we were extremely impressed with the courteous and professional delivery staff. Bryce and Gary have impeccable manners and are conscientious about their work. Because they were installing a mattress on top of our platform bed, they took the time to study the base to ensure that the new mattress would be secure and the mechanisms that would raise and tilt the bed would work properly. Once the mattress was set in place, they gave us a tutorial on how to use the remote so we would be aware of all the different settings. They patiently answered our questions and assured us that if there were any problems they would come back and assist us. They certainly exceeded our expectations and by far, it was the most pleasant delivery we have encountered. Mahalo! read more

My coworker and I went in to buy a few couches for our offices. Graham was helpful and the process was quick and painless. The delivery was quick as well and those guys squeezed those couches in weird angles...I was impressed. Tetris masters...I decided to go back to look for a bed, since I wasn't finding anything I like anywhere else in hilo and nobody in any other shop gave me much guidance. I went back and Chris L. helped me for nearly TWO HOURS to find a bed that fit my needs. Bless his heart for sticking with me for that long and letting me go back and forth between beds I thought I liked more than the other. Chris was extremely helpful in explaining the differences between each bed and was quick about narrowing down what I may want based on my concerns and wants. It was like talking to a friend who knew all the ins and outs and really wanted you to be satisfied with way I was getting. I walked in thinking I wouldn't want an adjustable stand with a massage setting and guess what I walked out with? Yup. An adjustable stand with massage settings. Chris pitched all the benefits and after me trying it out, I was on board. Zero regrets. Probably would've had more regrets not getting it. Chris really helped me out in this process. I had been dealing with back issues for a while & decided it was time to get a new mattress. This was my 1st time ever buying a mattress, so when I started shopping I was extremely discouraged by how expensive quality ones are ($4k+!) I went to BedMart with low expectations. Immediately, my outlook changed. The store is beautiful, big & right away you can see the variety of inventory. When I told the sales associate Philip I was suffering from back problems, he recommended I do a sort of "diagnostics" scan to determine which beds would best suit my needs. I answered a few questions on a machine & lied on a special bed which measured the pressure points in my back. Philip then began to show me the beds that were recommended from the scan. He was so professional & made the experience totally comfortable for me, taking all the anxiety & pressure out of the process. I was sold on the 3rd bed, a Serta, which turned out to be on sale & something I could confidently afford. We wrapped by coordinating delivery (which was FREE!) & disposal of my old mattress for only $30. This was exactly 1 week ago & today my new mattress is being delivered! read more

STOP RIGHT THERE - You have found your next furniture store!!! BedMart is without a doubt the BEST furniture buying experience I have ever been involved with. I have shopped all over the US and nothing compares to the service I got in Hilo. Chris and Shawn were fantastic the entire way and we decided to furnish our entire home with them. The Tempur-Pedic mattress we purchased was a bit pricey but for the first time in OVER 15 YEARS, I am sleeping through the night. Chris is a pro and guaranteed it or we could exchange it... but there is no one who will take that bed from me now. He joked and called it a "time machine" because you close your eyes and wake up 8 hours fully refreshed wondering where the time went. The furniture we purchased was quality, delivered and set up with a great group of guys. Great experience with Hilo Bedmart. I spent a lot of time testing beds and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. I worked with Chris who was awesome. Very helpful and not pushy. They really want you to get what you'll be comfortable with, not what they want to sell. We bought a living room set and two beds-and if they had more furniture we would have bought more. Their different financing specials really helped and they were able to give discounts on top of the sale prices. The delivery was free and we were able to get our things delivered when it was convenient for us so we wouldn't have to take off work. The delivery crews were excellent, had everything in and set up in no time. Highly recommend checking it out if you are looking for beds or living room furniture. read more

I found them online and obsessed over a handmade cookbook holder made from local Ulu wood. I am now the proud owner of said cookbook holder that is a beautiful and purposeful piece of art in my kitchen. The owner Kevin hand makes the furniture and his wife runs the store. They provide a very friendly and welcoming vibe. We plan to commission a handmade piece from them soon!

Unfortunately no store in Hilo carries anything like this, which is absolutely nuts considering we are in Hawaii, and everyone would like to eat outdoors. We were on our way to the last furniture store on our list when we passed by Don's house, and saw his "picnic tables for sale" sign. If he was on Yelp that would have saved us a couple hours of driving around, so I am correcting this problem for future picnic table seekers. Don is an elder gentlemen who specializes in making picnic tables. He also has some Hawaiian art and bird houses for sale as well. He makes everything out of his house. All his tables are made to order, they are $175 a piece, add $50 more is you want it stained. You have to buy your own stain though, but there is a Home Depot neat by. He does that so the customer picks his own color, to avoid disappointments if the color is not to customer's liking. We ordered our table on Monday, and Don promised they will be ready to pick up by Saturday. He kept his word, which we really liked. Thanks to Don we were able to eat our Christmas Eve dinner on our new picnic table in our new home! Don also does home repairs, so we will be using his services again for sure.

They seem to be training well, and creating a good work environment. What stands out most to me is the employees are always really friendly and they seem genuinely happy to work here. They are always saying hello and asking if I need anything. It reminds me of the 5 star service at our nearby resorts. And it is really, really appreciated. The store is organized and clean. The selection of merchandise is great which is so nice in our area since it is difficult to find good quality and up to date goods. I shop here once a month and I never leave without something.

However, the next person who entered was greeted and informed of the current specials, probably because it was her kind (haole). Secondly, the prices went up significantly! These are mostly used items and should be at least half the listed prices, if not cheaper! You can get NEW items at other retailers for way less. We used to be regulars at the old location and found some great deals but now I don't think we'll be back.

My go too especially for socks and underwear...... only problem for me is lack of space for all that "stuff" hehehe. I know people who would not step in this store, But why? Guess that they don't want to find hidden gems at great prices.
