Finally got to eat at this restaurant where most folks in FB Tucson foodie group and Tucson Redditora say is the best sushi in town! And I was not disappointed! Sashimi tasted so fresh! Sushi was great! Oh and that salad dressing! My boyfriend ordered a katau curry and it was delicious as well. There was just one girl running the whole dining area plus pick up but she still managed to provide excellent service. Ordering nigiri can get pricey so I can't go as frequent as I wish to but I look forward to my next visit!

Pretty good Japanese dinner combination with Tuna sashimi, salad, miso soup n main dish sukiyaki with rice!! Tasty n delicious!!! Services were good and efficient!!! Chef was a typical Japanese guy with a traditional sushi bar n dinner room designed!!

This is the best Japanese restaurant I found in Tucson thus far. There seem to be legitimate Japanese people preparing the food, and the taste was the closest thing I found in Tucson since Japan I ordered sukiyaki and tuna sashimi. Everything was delicious, including the bowl of rice. Of course, nothing will taste identical to Japan, but this is the closest I found in a long time. My only advice is to make sure you get a reservation. This place is small and gets quite crowded on the weekends.

I've tried 3 times to eat here and either I needed a reservation or they were closed. This seems to be run by an old school old sushi chef and he likely is the only chef so their hours reflect this. So be prepared and make reservations because they don't have many tables. We tried a variety of dishes and all of them were created with care. All was very tasty.

I absolutely LOVE this place. It reminds me of being in Tokyo all over again. From the ambiance to the food, it's truly an authentic experience. The service is amazing. The place is relatively small with just 1 server and she is very attentive. The sushi is top tier and I would highly recommend trying this place at least once. I typically arrive early to beat the dinner rush. If you are planning on stopping by, do make a reservation beforehand as they tend to be booked out.

My first time ever to Yamato and wow! What great sushi-so fresh! There aren't a lot of tables and snagging one without reservations seems chancy, but it's all worth it. Very pleasant service and simple decor, but the fresh sushi is the star here. We totally over ordered. In addition to the nigiri and rolls we also had gyoza, fried squid, soft shelled crab and a couple other items. So glad we finally tried it!

How do you know when it's an authentic Japanese spot, when you see Sukiyaki on the menu. Even being from NY/NJ, this dish is very hard to find. Opened for 36 years, you can feel the past when you walk in. Raul greeted us warmly. He mentions that they have imported uni (2pcs for $24) from Japan and my son's face lights up. Here is what we had on 2 visits in the same week: - assortment of sushi - imported Uni & Toro from Japan - Nabeyaki Udon (waiter's favorite) - Nabeyaki Soba (amazing broth) - Sukiyaki (comes with 2 types of noodles) - Tempura Soba - Katsudon (very flavorful) - Curry Rice with Katsu Incredible Japanese food and service. This will be our go-to spot whenever we visit Tucson. Reservations highly recommended or you might be turned away.

Ok. This is BY FAR the best Sushi in Tucson. I'm a huge sashimi person, check my reviews, I'm surprised I don't look like a fish at this point. Anyhow, the sashimi here is legit. No foul after taste. No yucky smells. This place is very very small and reservations are limited but pick up the phone and make them. It's well worth it. The sushi chef is an older Japanese gentleman and he obviously knows his craft. Absolutely phenomenal food!! I try to come at least once a week when I am in town. The price is not even cost prohibitive. It's affordable and delicious. Highly recommend this amazing restaurant!!

Every time I come here the food is so good. It's a hard place to spot being in a shopping mall, however, worth finding. I have the Yaki soba with chicken. All the other food was ordered by my friend. He said it was fantastic. It's not the cheapest place to eat, but so worth it.

Everything was so good here! Ample parking and you can make a reservation by calling ahead. We were sat right away during our Tuesday date night. You can see what we ordered on the menu pick. I heard the salad was delicious and it has an amazing dressing! We even dipped our cucumbers into the dressing. They need to bottle it up! The dynamite scallops had a great kick and were so flavorful. I loved the futomaki!! I'm still craving it. All of it was fresh and served fast. Great service and a great spot to celebrate your anniversary.

    Order to go!

Post pandemic Update: Yamato is my favorite sushi restaurant In Tucson. I've been a regular here for nearly a decade. Yamato is definitely more traditional- the sushi menu is small and high quality. They also have a full menu of Japanese entrees and appetizers. Chef Noburo manages the sushi bar solo. Which means quality control is top priority. It also means that service can be delayed. Know that up front and you'll enjoy your meal. Now that we are in a somewhat "post pandemic" world, I think another update is in order. Just like all other dining establishments, Yamato was impacted by the pandemic. The are open for takeout. They do a ton of takeout so plan in advance. The dining room is open for lunch and dinner. Reservations are strongly encouraged and may still be required for dinner. Definitely call ahead. The sushi bar seating remains closed. Yamato is also great for takeout. We support them both for dine in and take out.

I want to say that it was just as good as Monta Ramen in Chinatown in Las Vegas. You walk up, you order then they text you when your order is ready. Coming from California, I definitely have high expectations when it comes to sushi, and this place honestly delivered. The fish tasted fresh, the rice was flavorful and well-balanced, and everything just came together really nicely. We also tried some ramen, which was surprisingly solid too. We grabbed our food and sat near the bar, and it made for a great, casual dinner experience. From the time we arrived to the time we left, the staff were incredibly kind and courteous. Our server Reuben was especially great. As my sister has been here a few times already, Reuben immediately knew her choice of drink and starting appetizer. Any time he was checking in on us, he was incredibly kind and offered some very helpful recommendations. As we were being seated, my sister had mentioned offhand we were celebrating my birthday. Before we received our check when all was said and done, several of the staff took a moment to wish me happy birthday along with a slice of cheesecake! Obligated or not, it was incredibly sweet and I was truly humbled. The food itself was superb. We chose a variety of sushi rolls and each were bursting with a distinctive combination of flavors; everything from sweet and tangy to spicy with the perfect amount of bitterness. Each roll was well crafted had the presentation to match its splendid umami. I can't speak on behalf of the more busy nights but at the time of our meal, the restaurant was pulling in some steady business without feeling noisy or chaotic. Tables were clean, staff were attentive to customers and I just felt so very welcome there. Needless to say, I left Kintaro positively beaming. Even though there was a mixup with a duplicate order, I still enjoyed my visit. Since there were so many options, I'm only going over highlights. Favorites: Salmon Volcano, Dragon egg, Salmon Roe sashimi/nigiri, Naruto roll Salmon Volcano: (5/5) Spicy imitation crab wrapped with 4 cooked salmon slices and topped with spicy mayo and sweet eel sauce. Presented beautifully and tastes even better. Dragon egg: (4.5/5) Lots of Imitation crab wrapped with thinly sliced avocado to look like an egg and drizzled with eel sauce and spicy mayo. I mainly like this one because how it looks, the taste is decent but not exceptional. Salmon roe: (5/5) This dish is usually limited at other ayce sushi restaurants because of how expensive it is. At kintaro, it's unlimited, fresh, and you can order it without rice to enjoy more. (Order as sashimi and not nigiri) The taste is very salty and umami. I like to think of it as big caviar. Naruto roll: (4.5/5) Salmon, tuna, other fish, and avocado wrapped with cucumber served in a slightly sour sauce. It has NO rice. Honestly a good pick if you like fish but not rice. Least favorites: snow crab hand roll, fried scallops, miso soup, surf clam Snow crab hand roll: (1.5/5) I'm 90% sure there is no snow crab. It tasted like imitation crab to me. Fried scallops: (1/5) Tasted like imitation crab/fish. It lacked both the slightly chewy and springy texture of scallops and the scallop flavor. Miso soup: (3/5) Last time we were here it was loaded with tofu and seaweed but this time it was just the soup. Surf clam: (2/5) It didn't taste like anything. One issue was the service. The food took 15-30 minutes to come out per order, which was understandable due to how busy the restaurant was, but the worst part is that it came out incomplete so I couldn't tell how much of an order was left before I made a new order. The 2hr time limit doesn't help either. On top of that, our server got our old order confused with a new one so that we ended up getting duplicates of a huge order which we couldn't finish. Luckily, the manager was nice enough to not charge us for the extras if we didn't take them to go and offered us to take the leftovers for $20 if we wanted to take it to go. For the ambiance, it's pretty nice. Music loud enough to mask out the other tables and decorations on the wall. Overall the sushi was mostly fresh and the ambiance is nice, just the food comes out a little slow. I would still highly recommend kintaro.
