Used to come here a lot... before I learned what good bbq was. This is just ok. They leave the membrane on the ribs and all of the meat is just kind of bland. Not much smoke flavor to speak of. Their only saving grace is their corn chowder and chili. Both are excellent and have tons of flavor. My family and I have been coming to Madison for years and every year we do take-out from the Yankee Smokehouse. This year we decided to dine in and change it up. This place is a smokehouse but also a pizzeria, so we have always called it Pizza Pig because of the dual cuisine There was a 20 minute wait when we arrived and we seated at right about the 20 minute mark. We sat in the back of the restaurant along the window. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was very loud in here as there is little sound absorption- so be prepared to speak loud.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We also sat next to the service area, which didn't bother us at all, but something to be aware of. The back room requires two steps down, and there is no wheelchair access to this area - but the rest of the restaurant appears to be wheelchair accessible. Our waitress was pleasant and very busy! She was handling multiple tables efficiently. I came with my whole family and the great thing about this place is that there is a little bit for everyone. Don't like BBQ? No problem - they have pizza or sandwiches , even salads. You can even get a burger. I ordered the Reuben, my kids got a pizza and my husband got the brisket and pulled pork combo. Food came out hot. Kids loved the pizza. Brisket was a bit fatty and pulled pork was dry. My Reuben was delicious. Onions rings and fries were nice and crisp and huge! Decided to head in Friday 9/29/2023, kind of cold and rainy day. Quickly greeted by a waitress and we were allowed to pick out seats (opted for the high top table in the bar area). Wife ordered the BBQ Sampler for 1 (see picture), she liked it enough, very basic, cooked properly but very little flavor, needed to use their bbq sauce (which was solid). I opted for one of the BBQ themed pizzas HOG TROUGH (see picture). The meats on it were ok, the veggies under cooked. The red sauce had no flavor add the dough was undercooked. It certainly wasn't horrible but very marginal at best. Hopefully this was just an off day in the kitchen. I live in the area, so I'll give one more try. When I do I'll update the review. read more

The full salad was huge. The burnt ends were good, not overly hard and sticky like some I've had. Three others got ribs and brisket. One of them said they found it a bit dry, but the others just handed her the sauce bottle. Someone mentioned that they liked that the ribs were not very fatty. The beans were really good, the coleslaw also good. The Texas toast good. There were no highlights that really stand out, but everything was good, including desserts - apple crisp and strawberry shortcake. The service was attentive and everything came out correctly. I entered the bar on a January Friday evening at around 6pm. There were 2 tables and 1 person sitting at the bar. One of the tables was done and the other had not ordered yet. I sat at the bar and waited about 10 mins for the bartender to take a drink order and slide me a men&u. 6:45 later and I finally cashed out on the long gone beer and had never ordered. Place looks like any BBQ joint you encounter in the USA, but no one comes here to see what's on the walls. We came here to see what comes out the smoker. The Ribs are easily some of the best smoked ribs I ever had. The smoke ring pink zone was all the way through at times the peppery rub they use while smoking them was great. Wish their sauce glacéd a bit but the smoked flavor made up for it and when you have that good smoke I don't think I want to mask it with sauce. Their steak fries where outstanding, crisp and meaty perfect for sharing and enjoying. My wife had a pull pork sandwich with BBQ Beans. Drinks were mudslides, strong but could've been a bit more frozen. We started off with some honey cornbread with maple butter and mozzarella sticks! The maple butter for the cornbread was to die for. The mix sticks were like normal mix sticks. Dinner was a little bit of everything. If you don't want a whole meal or aren't that hungry they have small orders of things. I got 1/2 lb of brisket instead of a five course meal. It was plenty! The brisket was absolutely fantastic. The perfect amount of gristle fat and actual meat. They made their own bbq sauce that was very very good. The corn on the cob seemed maybe like it was a bit old, but was still edible. My sister had a chicken salad sandwich she said was really good. They had Texas toast with every dinner. Their cole slaw was some of the best I've ever had. Cole slaw is a thing with me and I'm hard to please, so that says a lot. The service however was not what I would call ok even. I just wanted to place an order for takeout. As people and staff walked by me there was not one person to take my takeout order. I must have stood There for a good 10 minutes while they seated 4 tables and i was waiting before any of them came in. But the Brisket was actually pretty good. No Rub to it though, Fat could melt a little better. But the sauce Completely ruins it. It was just too powerful. Tried a small half chicken. Very smokey flavor to it, very good, very moist inside. Not completely white meat. Baked Beans are said to be famous, I wouldn't say so. Cooked perfectly to the best texture, there on the sweet side but kind subtle. Coleslaw was typical. Texas toast was typical, but a nice change up. Ribs were excellent! Not too much meat on the bone, doesn't slide right off, super smokey flavor, and No Sauce on it, Great Rub too. Pulled Pork was really good too. Not greasy, Not super moist or dry, no hard super duper flavor punch. Although the pork was surrounded completely by everything else on the plate so it might have been able to stay at a real good temperature. They only have the one house sauce and it instantly made me think of Ketchup. If I gave you a cup of the sauce and told you to tell me what it is, you would say ketchup from the taste. The GF and I went here this past weekend on a trip to see foliage. The food isn't bad. They did GREAT with the brisket that I ordered. Tender, smoky...good. Their fries were average. Their chili had too much sugar in it for my taste...chili shouldn't be sweet, though the chunks of meat were definitely better than the ground round so many places serve. If they hadn't added sugar it would have been great too. The GF's pulled pork was moist and tender as it should be. No complaints there. But...their sauce was kinda...meh. It was underwhelming and I would have liked to have options of different styles or kinds. It wasn't sweet enough, or smoky enough...it just wasn't...barbecue enough for me. The front of the business confuses you a bit. We got the impression that you order at the window, pick up at the window, and then sit yourself inside or outside around the back. Which isn't a bad option. All shades during a hot summer day like the one on the day I went there. So we ordered, picked up and went to sit ourselves down and we got some dirty looks and confused looks but NO ONE a decided to come up to us after several awkward seconds to tell us that we could have ordered from the inside and not gone through the "take out" option which is outside. We sort of sat ourselves and then ONE waitress actually treated us MUCH nicer than the folks giving us the awkward looks. It was such a pleasure to see that there are still good humans in a pack of nasty people. Enough of the service. If you want to avoid sitting inside and dealing with the staff just head on outside. Or eat in your car. The food: I had the brisket and chicken meal. I thought it was WAY overpriced for the amount that they gave you. I could have easily gone across the street and gotten some Macdonalds afterwards. The chicken piece they gave me was probably less than a chicken breast you buy from the supermarket. The chicken was juicy but OK. The fries were good. Traditional, nothing extraordinary at all. The brisket was 3.5 out of 5. Nothing out of this world. The coleslaw was good but they give you a spoonful. Same for the baked beans which I didn't like all that much. I didn't have their corn bread but I heard from my in-laws that it was GOOD. Would I return: Maybe in a pinch where I have to get my kids something but I wouldn't go there with my wife by ourselves if we could help it.
