The last couple of times we went here, we weren't as impressed as we'd been on our previous visits over the past 3 years. The food is good, but a little overpriced. The portions are the right size, they should just lower the price by a couple of dollars or so and then they'd be more reasonable. I've had the smoked turkey dinner here several times and it is good, comes with potatoes, squash and a big buttery (kind of burned) slice of texas toast (white bread, sliced thick). My dining companion gets the ribs, and we agree, we make better ribs at home with our little smoker and then cooking them in the oven. This place is good if you're not a bbq chef yourself, but once you start making bbq yourself, you probably won't be as impressed anymore, which is what I think happened with us. read more

Beef brisket was tough and chewy, smoked pork mostly fat, and the words "pulled pork" don't even appear on the menu! I have been coming to this place for as long as I can remember on trips to North Conway. I usually only like half the food I order. Seems like quality has gone down- but what hasn't changed in the corn chowder and strawberry shortcake- both amazing. If you are a fan of south of the Mason-Dixon Line barbeque, forget this place. I don't know how it ever got such high ratings on Yelp. I grant you the meats are smoked, but they are dry and generally tasteless-- we could not actually distinguish the brisket from the sliced(not pulled) pork! Portions are large only if you are a munchkin--- 5 oz qualifies for a large or jumbo sandwich on a basic hamburger roll--- for $10. Clearly an over-rated tourist trap in the middle of nowhere. P.S the highly-touted baked beans are not as good as most canned beans in WalMart. read more

On our way back from the White Mountains, my parents, husband and I became pretty famished and started looking for highly rated restaurants on our iPhones while driving south. This was one of the only places that came up that was both highly rated AND still open for business. With so few options before us, we decided to give it a shot. I've gotta say, I am SO happy that we did; this place is absolutely amazing. Since we were four nearly starving people, and all wanting different things on the menu... I had the crazy idea of ordering the Yankee Smokehouse Feast from the menu, meant to feed six hungry people..! There was a full slab of ribs, a whole chicken, brisket, pork, corn on the cob, garlic toast, beans, sweet potato fries, steak fries...! The whole table was full of food. I'm not particularly a meat eater, but I was definitely converted! The smoked chicken was my favorite; we had some leftover and it was just as good two days later! 4 people fed, tons of great leftovers, and all for 85 bucks including tax, etc.. We left a big tip on top of that because the staff was great, we were quickly seated, food came quick, and it was all just so great. Only thing if say is that the corn on the cob was mushy and didn't seem freshly cooked. It's out of season now, so perhaps that can't be helped. Stopped in here to meet some friends while visiting NH, I was a little surprised to see "pizza" and thought it was kind of funny to have pizza at a BBQ place. My sweetie and I ordered the Smokehouse Sampler for two and it came with beans, coleslaw, corn on the cob, fries and garlic toast, LOTS of food. Low budget decor but great service, this place is right on the main road to/from North Conway and we stopped in hopes of getting generous portions of terrific casual food. The pork sandwich was quite decent and the coleslaw and beans were truly delicious! The buffalo chicken strips were real pieces of white mean, not breaded, so we're hopeful they were not frozen. However, the fries were clearly frozen, like OreIda brand krinkle cuts...ugh! A super limited selection on tap yet the microbrew made in VT was really good. Had been before and went again last week. Really, really good. Had the sampler which was enough for about 6 people! Ribs were meaty and tender, pork and brisket were melt-in-the-mouth good and the chicken was absolutely amazing. Good coleslaw - not too sweet and just creamy enough. My husband and I were driving up to North Conway for the weekend from Boston and stopped here just on a whim. Best decision ever!! We each got a beer, some cornbread, and the dinner for two - pulled pork and ribs. So delicious! The best barbeque we've ever had. The meat just fell off the bone for the ribs and the pulled pork... so tender! We were in heaven. And you get SO Much food!! We saved the leftovers and ate them for lunch the next day. The best part about driving from Wolfeboro to North Conway is passing the Yankee Smokehouse - and smelling all its delicious glory. Even better than smelling the place is actually stopping in and eating. I always start with the corn chowder, which has bacon in it and is absolutely the best I've ever had. From there I move on to some BBQ dish, sometimes chicken sometimes ribs. The sides I could take or leave... they need to bring fried okra to New Hampshire. But after chowder and a portion of their meat, I'm usually stuffed to the brim and ready for a Thanksgiving-style power nap. Great place to stop after skiing, or after tubing down the creek in the summer. It's packed to the brim with bikers on hot summer weekends, which means never a dull moment. read more

I can't in good conscience give this any less than 5 stars. This may be your stomach's favorite thing about NH. And it urges you to go there if you are anywhere within 50 miles of the place. We used to go here all the time in the summer when we went up to Lake Chocorua for the weekend. It was usually the first stop after unloading and the last stop before going back home. As an adult, I still go out of my way to go there when I'm in NH or at my Uncle's lake house in Holderness. The reason why this place is so awesome is that it's food that is rarely done well north of the Mason-Dixon line. It may not compare to what they've got in the south, but remember folks, you're in New Hampshire, not Alabama. And quite frankly, I don't complain about your "clam chowder" (in quotes to emphasize that those are their words, not mine), so give 'em a break. I recommend the pulled pork or beef, but I've liked everything I've had there. You'll want to box up your leftovers. It's that kind of place. In addition to food, they have touristy Yankee Smokehouse paraphernalia. My girlfriend got these booty shorts that say smokin' on the rear. And we both got t-shirts with the pig on them that say "We'll sell no swine before its time," which is a spin of off wine companies who pride themselves in the ages of their wines...this place slow cooks their meat and that's what makes it "fall-off-the-bone" delicious. We've had people on the street approach us to share their love for YS when they see the t-shirts; it's that famous and that memorable. You can eat outside or take your meal to go. read more

So much to like about this place, but not the ribs. Staff is very good, prices are reasonable, it's clean, it's convenient. The smoked chicken is outstanding - distinct pink smoke ring, great flavor, perfectly cooked. The sides are delicious. Their pulled pork is delicious. But you cannot be a 'very good' barbecue joint without very good ribs, and theirs are only so-so. Folks, there are a few things you need to do to transform your ribs: First, slather then with cheap yellow mustard, then dry-rub them, then cover in the fridge overnight. Then smoke them, 2 hours is plenty. Then bake them (or just foil them and put them back in the smoker) and let them bake for 3 hours at 250 or so. THEN LET THEM SIT OVERNIGHT. Next day, bake them again, 3 or so hours at 250. This long slow bake, plus the mustard, plus the smoke will break down the tough connective tissues that are making your ribs stringy and tough. Finally, that's way too 'bright' a sauce for my taste, and a choice (like you formerly offered) would be better. Vinegar taste was overwhelming, too bitter. I'd love to see you master your ribs, given how well you do so many other things that so many other joints fail at. Even so, I'll be back, but not for ribs. read more

I'm not a huge fan of the Smokehouse. They serve everything on disposable plates which I don't like bc it is wasteful. The few times I've gotten BBQ there it hasn't been great...BUT, but but but, the pizzas are awesome! This was our first visit after driving past it on many an excursion around Winnipesaukee in the past. Checking out the menu online was enticing because they offer sides of meat without having to get all the carb-laden sides that accompany the dinner plates; so we stopped in mid-afternoon for a late lunch. Our waitress was great, friendly & attentive without hovering (my iced tea was refilled before it was empty, always a nice touch). We hit a great time with no crowds and had our choice of dining area or pub/bar, so we snagged a pub table. In addition to the regular menu, there were lunch specials - I gave in and opted for the Reuben sandwich filled with house-made corned beef and a side of cole slaw. Wow - this was a great choice and worth the bread splurge! some of the best corned beef I've had, and sandwich was well-balanced. Of course, I had to share some with S., but that's just how eating out works for us. I ate 1/2 the sandwich then pulled back the bread on the 2nd half and went at the innards with my fork (it was that good). S. got 1/2 lb. each of beef brisket & smoked pork with cole slaw. The flavor was good, but the texture was lacking -- both were thinly sliced, like deli coldcuts, and also chopped. We had expected thicker, meatier pieces, carved from a chunk; it was disappointing despite the flavor. Cole slaw was good but not fall-off-your-Chair remarkable. Both 1/2 lb plates came with a big slice of Texas toast - seemed buttery and lightly garlicky from the little bite I had. This place has been here for as long as I have been coming to Tamworth 30+ years...... I absolutely LOVE good BBQ... I have been to all the best places in Menphis, North Carolina, Texas and KC. It has improved in recent years but I would have to agree that it is sub-par when it comes to BBQ. The smoke is good but the cuts of meat or the cooking of them could use some help. The pulled pork was fatty which meant that the cuts did not render the fat and there was no way they cooked it for enough time. I am also not a huge fan of their sauce but that is subjective. If I'm going in food alone-this would be a 4. This place is a cute BBQ joint. Extremely casual-pig theme and with many patrons taking ski mobiles there. I ordered the smoked chicken salad. The table around me had sandwiches on pieces of toast, which I assumed mine would be as well. Instead it came on a Bulkie roll which was on the hard side. The salad itself was delicious!! The steak fries were very good as well. Other people in my party ordered the burger with pulled pork and bacon-this thing was massive!! Pork was moist, but not too much sauce, bacon was a little soft and would have been nicer if it was cooked a little crisper. The buffalo fingers were "ok" according to another party guest. The ribs plate was delicious, meat fell right off the bone. My one complaint would be the service. Waitress came back very quickly on two occasions almost appearing to rush is to order as it was obvious we were still looking at the menus. Considering the food is mostly presmoked and the burger was only cooked med rare it took a LONG time for the food. After 25 minutes of waiting, and a half empty dining room, we reluctantly asked the waitress if our food was coming. She stated a large party had come into the bar ahead of us. That's fine, but she had passed the table numerous times, and that should have been told us. When it finally did arrive, she asked if anyone wanted soda refills, and most of us did. Stopped here for dinner after a long drive from Connecticut and a hike in Franconia Notch. Had corn chowder for apps, was pretty good. Had sampler for one and grilled chicken for entrees. The place was recommended to us by our airbnb host - if we had the time to look up yelp reviews we probably wouldn't have ended up here. Service was nice though. The place was clean, the service great and fast but the food left much to be desired for the price. Having eaten at The Salt Lick in Texas recently I believe I had high expectations. The barbecue was mediocre for the price you pay. You can get much better barbecue for less money at KC's Ribshack in Manchester. They put way too much sauce on my meal and only had one kind of sauce available. I feel like they should put the sauce on the side as I don't like my ribs slathered in sauce. Not great. We have been here many times over the years. We camp in Ossipee frequently and always look forward to hitting the smokehouse. We went to castle in the clouds and decided we were close enough to take the ride over. I think there is for sure new management or owners. Something is different. Service was fast and the girls were nice. But we literally had three different servers for one meal. It wasn't that busy and that wasn't a problem per se. It was just weird. I had a pulled chicken sandwich which was really just the regular chicken breast with bbq sauce squirted on it? Sub par. My husband had the prime rib which he has never ordered from here before. It had good flavor but was pretty fatty. And not in that good melty prime rib fatty way. Stringy. Chewy. My sons pulled Pork sandwich was soggy. Not sure what's going on.
