My favorite hotdogs since I was a kid. A Fairmont landmark for decades! Few places like this left!

Sadly Russell Yann, affectionately known as the "Hotdog Nazi" for his no ketchup, no slaw "don't ask policy, posted on his wall, passed away this past year. Thankfully, his daughter has taken over the small hotdog stand and has not lost a beat, by providing the same, best chili hotdogs, not only in the state but possibly the country. I am a huge fan of WV slaw dogs and have eaten them across the state. But Yann's is different. They are very simple, dog, on a bun, a spoon full of spicy and delicious chili, onions, with or without mustard, that would not be as good covered in slaw. Yann's hot dogs go down so easily, I ate 3 in the car outside of the stand and run back into the store for 3 more. I liked the process here. Walk in, get your grub, walk out. I didn't think the spicy was spicy. Kind of a let down after hearing how spicy the sauce would be. The flavor was nice though. I loved that one of the employees had a treasure box of goodies for my grandson to choose something from. Not much ambiance - has sort of a good line feeling. I'll visit again. read more

If you enjoy the spice, go simple and order the two hot dogs with a chocolate milk (hot dogs are a bit small but for a good price, order as many as you'd like). I've been going to Yann's for 50 plus years. And even though I've moved away from Fairmont, it's always a destination on each return. The hot dogs are spicy and that's the way I like them. I order sauce and mustard. Always with a chocolate milk. Soft drinks just fuel the fire. You can get onions, but never ketchup. And they're serious. See the picture below. read more

My first trip there was a few years ago. The "old man" I guess had passed away, but his family that waited on us was very nice. I spent over 200 dollars on hot dogs to bring back to Cleveland for family to try. And I bought a few T-Shirts. Although spicy, they loved them. So did I. It left me with the taste of coming back for more. And yes it tasted great with the chocolate milk! I was in town visiting and stopped at Yann's. In all the time I lived in Fairmont, I never went. It is definitely a place for regulars- people just walk in and say a number (of hot dogs they want). The workers were so friendly and ask how many and what toppings you want. It is crazy that they are only $1.60/each. We had hot dogs & a pepperoni roll with sauce ($3). The sauce is pretty spicy. FYI- cash only. There is plenty of parking. It is definitely worth the stop off of I79 to get this WV staple! read more

Best dogs in WV! Loved in Clarksburg/Fairmont for the first 23 years of my life. My husband introduced me to Yann's in 1993. We moved to Raleigh, NC in 1996 and every time my husband and I go back, we visit Yann's. Isn't a better hot dog place around for spicy dogs. (Only other place I loved hot dogs growing up is Sisler's in Hepzibah (Harrison County)) But with Yann's love the spiciness of the sauce. Oh yeah, don't forget the chocolate milk!!! read more

I always always always come here when I come home. This is absolutely the best hotdog place in Fairmont. The sauce is hot . I don't think it's unbearable but if you have never had them, I would get a milk. I always get a milk. They are cheap and super delicious. Just make sure you know what you're doing when you come in. You don't ask for more or less. Get the dogs with a chocolate milk or a sofa. This restaurant is a staple here in Fairmont. Every time I visit Fairmont, West Virginia, I sincerely hope Yann would be open. I get 4 or 5 hot dogs to eat, and at least another 6 'to-go'. Yann hot dog sauce is the most unique I have tasted by far. You'll love them or hate them, there is no in between! This place is probably the only place in north central WV (maybe the whole state) that sells an item with considerable heat. The spicy, chili sauce is the only reason I occasionally eat hot dogs! (I've made the unforgettable mistake of watching videos on how they're made) 1) Yes, it's a bit strange, but get a chocolate milk when you get these because it's the Yann's experience. And if you're not good with heat, you'll definitely need it. 2) Russel Yann really is the hotdog nazi that everyone depicts him as. However, he was pleasant (as pleasant as he probably could stand) with me when I asked for no raw onions...meaning he didn't yell or kick me out, just made an unenthused grunt while frowning the whole time and sent me on my way. I think the key is to ask VERY nicely and to look a bit afraid. That's what I did anyway. 3) Just don't ask for ketchup. Really, don't. This is your warning and there are signs inside as a last minute warning. I've seen people leave in tears...yes, over ketchup. :( read more

Honestly, never thought the best hot dog would be found in West Virginia. These hot dogs, really the chili, are amazing! So spicy and delicious. There's no customization, which is great because this is exactly how they should be enjoyed. The spice level is on a different level, so yes drink the chocolate milk! Definitely the best hot dogs around. They lost a lot when he quit steaming the buns. Great depth of flavor. Sometimes they are really hot but always good. Drink some chocolate milk before you take the first bite. Be prepared that Russell can be a total jerk. But if you are frequent and he gets to know you he is an OK guy. This is a rare low rating for me especially for such a highly reputable place. I give it a two star because I can tell there's quality there but I can't taste it because my mouth is burned. I was warned that the sauce was hot and told to get a chocolate milk. I love chocolate milk and this is the first time I had to drink it to suppress pain instead of enjoying the flavor. I just couldn't get past the heat. It consumes the hotdog. I literally couldn't taste the dog. I was so excited to go here. I had been anticipating it for months. I made it a full foodathon day by getting pepperoni rolls at Tomaro's and Country Club Bakery. I got some hotdogs at Woody's which were delicious. Then I thought I was saving the best for last with Yann's but it was a dud for me. I really wanted to like it. read more

Yann's Hot Dogs have been a local staple for as long as I can remember. These are not your normal hot dog by any means. Old man Yann has crafted a unique version of dog that has made West Virginians grin for years even though it gave them an ulcer. You can get these with everything which includes chili (which is spicy but life changing) onions and mustard, without onions, or plain. Don't make the mistake of asking for ketchup...ever. For years (even after North Marion basketball practices that began at 6:00a and ended at 9:00a) I've enjoyed Yann's hot dogs and chocolate milk. My love for them is only surpassed by Country Club Bakery pepperoni rolls. Interesting fact, Yann makes a set number of hot dogs each day and when they're gone he closes up shop. First off, there are a few things you need to know about Yann's Hot Dogs. 1. Old man Yann is quite similar to the soup nazi from Seinfeld. 2. DO NOT ask for Ketchup, you will most likely get yelled at without receiving your food. 3. The "dogs" come in three variations: everything ( Chili, Mustard, Onions), no onions, and plain. The chili is hot but FANTASTIC. It's definitely a local eatery, and by far the BEST hot dog you will get in all of West Virginia. It's not open all year 'round or even all week during the summer. My Dad started taking me to Yann's in the early 1950s!!! (Yeah, I'm old). I have been going there ever since. I started taking my sons there when they were 5 or 6 years old, and they still go, and still love the dogs. Yann's is the place that not only put's the "Hot" in Hot Dog, it perfects it. Yes it's spicy and no you can't get it any other way. I've traveled quite a bit and hands down both my friends and I have always chosen Yann's to be the best hot dog stand there is. Just to compare, because why not, we had hot dogs in the various places we've went. Whether it was a hot dog stand in Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Wisconsin, Arizona, or even Nevada they didn't stand up to the greatness that is Yann's Hot Dog Stand. The real kicker? At just under $1 each his hot dogs are also the cheapest. The are things you don't do at this place. Here are the ones I know of: Get a dog with anything less than "everything". (Everything is a small amount of mustard, just the right amount of sauce and very little onion.) Ask for ketchup. (This "little old man" will call forth the fire of Hell itself to kill you.) Order anything less than two. (He will berate you for wasting his time.) If you follow these simple rules, you'll find your experience at Yann's Hot Dog Stand to be the best there is. The hotdogs are good if you like spicy food, which I do. You cannot customize your dog like at other restaurants, which is probably the main focus here; consistency. But if you're in the mood for some good spicy dogs make sure you get some chocolate milk to wash it all down! read more

I have enjoyed for over 40 years. As a child on vacation in Fairmont, I remember my Uncle, Luke The Plumber bringing home these hot dogs for us to enjoy that summer. I was hooked. I have had hundreds of different types of dogs with "sauce" and I use Yann's sauce and dogs as my baseline in judging the quality of any other sauce. I have found no one, in 40+ years that has had a sauce as delicious as Yann's produces. Everytime I get a chance to go to Fairmont, I try to by at least 2 dozen dogs with sauce, onions and mustard. You have to get there early though. He has a unique product so don't try to change it in front of him. Don't ask for extra anything and don't ask for ketchup. Enjoy what he offers. I have preached the perfectness of his sauce and dogs across the world and all over the United States. I even had them shipped to me (frozen) overseas while in the Marine Corps. I said in another review that Woody's is my favorite hot dog joint in Fairmont. While I stand by that, I must say that Yann's is an altogether different animal. If you ask for anything, and I mean ANYTHING other than what they put on their dogs (sauce, onion, mustard) you will basically be run out of the place. Now to some this may sound terrible, but honestly, these dogs are fan-freaking-tastic made that way. The sauce is hot, but not overbearing, and it has a great peppery bite.
