This allowed us to see the project coming to life, from different angles, at different times of the day, for different options. Finally, we took each element and refined details to get to a final design. Dawn converted all that to plans and details to give to the contractor that did the project. She also helped me with alternatives as I was negotiating additional details with the contractor. Overall it was a great experience and it was fantastic to work with her.

Olesya was fun to collaborate with and came up with many great suggestions throughout the process, several of which we adopted into the final scope of work. She delivered extensive plant recommendations given the soil, sun exposure, and surrounding plants for each section of the yards, and even moved several plants that were not thriving into better environments for them. She also gave a lot of space for our own thoughts and preferences, and integrated them well into the final product. I really liked the rest of her team as well. We finished a home extension remodel project a year ago, and our front and back yards were in great need of work! Our project with Hortus involved making a backyard patio, demolishing the front yard including removing old fence posts, making a path to the front porch, and daylighting our downspouts. The most challenging part of the project was to extend a preexisting portion of our brick-flagstone pattern, and they perfectly matched it! When we did the home remodel a year ago, we hardly saw the contractor and the crew left a mess. Not so with Hortus Designs. Vijaya was on site most days, and made phone calls and texts on days she couldn't be on site. She made herself available to discuss and explain throughout the entire project progress. And her team was careful to clean up after the long days of hard work. On a more personal note, my kids and I loved chatting with her. Followed in the next year or two by a fairly big landscape project in the backyard. We replaced the long rectangular straggling poorly sunlit lawn by a beautiful bean shaped two step paver patio, with downlights and also a firepit. With additional butterfly friendly plantings. Vijaya listened to my design ideas, we brainstormed over my Pinterest boards. She gave very good suggestions as well. She was very receptive to breaking up the project estimate in parts so i could skip parts that broke my budget. Ofcourse as in any landscape project our ideas of budgets and real professional costs are different. That is reality. So it worked out best to understand the real costs that Vijaya proposed in a written proposal. Based on that we were able to break off pieces of the project that were absolutely desirable now versus pushed out to later. She was on site daily and that really helped us with any questions that might have arisen. Later another few years later we worked with Hortus again for a lovely frontyard project with a custom circular seating and driveway. We love our backyard and frontyard and have enjoyed it over the years.

She took our limited space and mapped out a plan that was perfect and incorporated everything we needed and wanted. Her process is pretty amazing; she spent a few hours with us in the backyard, asking questions and taking notes. When we were unsure about something, she'd make suggestions and help us reach a decision. She contacted us when she got to her office and we had a Zoom meeting where we reviewed a lot of details of the plan. That was a few hour process and we were exhausted when we got done but that same day we received from her a complete plan incorporating all the hardscape, landscaping, and plants, as well as a materials list. We were amazed! Her pricing is very reasonable and we felt we got much more value than what she charged. What's more, some of our design needed to change over the next few months as we were implementing the plan and Kim quickly responded to all of our questions and challenges with great suggestions. Apparently, state of California has rushed through ADU approvals because of the homeless problem. The guard rails are off for building ADU's and inconveniencing your neighbors. Our neighbor decided to build a two-story ADU in an area that has single-story homes. His windows were overlooking clearly into our backyard and swimming pool. To say the least it was horrifying. We were lucky to find Cyrus among two other bids for landscapers. Cyrus was the only one who had an plan about the trees to use, who gave us a price and schedule. This man is so smart and talented as a Landscaper. He was an absolute pleasure to work with from beginning to end. He was always on schedule and I was surprised how smoothly the planting of the trees went considering we were in a state of panic. It really was a pleasure meeting Cyrus and working with him. Luckily we were able to afford almost $30,000 of large trees to hide most of the ADU and give future buyers some privacy. Beware of ADU builders right to their fence line.
