So, I discovered an amazing brand new Japanese clothing store today, only to find out they've been on the square for 20 years. To make up for lost time I bought an awesome chartreuse linen shirt from the sale rack outside. My friends were tired of waiting for me so I sent them to a tasting room & went back for more. The two ladies inside were wearing the goods and looked more fantastic in them than I could hope for. Seriously, after I win the lottery I will buy the entire inventory. There's some one-of-a-kind pieces behind the counter, and a lot of generously proportioned arty pieces that look good on a variety of bodies. These are the kind of effortlessly stylish items everyone should have in their closet when they want to up their game & get out of the T-shirt & jeans look. Yes, its odd for a guy to do a review on a woman's clothing store. No, I don't have a woman's clothes fetish (at least not one externally detectable). Whenever I am in Healdsburg, I prod my wife to go in and poke around. What I love about the place is the balance struck between Japanese traditional textiles (mostly from old kimonos) and Western fashion. The Japanese women who the place have the utmost respect for the fabrics that they ply into very classy, very distinctive fashion. That balance is really hard to attain without being really tacky or be totally blatant, in-your-face about the Japanese-ness of their clothing. read more

This was one of those impulsive pit stops where I ducked in, hoping and expecting that I wouldn't find something I'd fall in love with and/or that things were out of my price range. And though after seeing the price tags on the dresses, I would've walked out, my husband fell in love with one of the dresses at the front of the store, e.g. a special Japanese crinkled fabric dress, which he insisted I try on. Who am I to deny him, lol ? :-) So I ended up trying on several and hemmed and hawed my way through the process ... I actively hoped they wouldn't fit, so I wouldn't be tempted. Because I wasn't comfortable making an impulsive buy and also we had a lunch reservation, we asked the salesperson if she'd be willing to hold three dresses, which she was so sweet and kind and genuinely understanding, we felt good about the exchange and customer service here. We came back after lunch to try more on and go through the process. I ended up buying two dresses. The store itself is compact and nicely laid out with a sense of organization to it, a form of logic in terms of color and type, e.g. sweaters, tops, tunics, dresses, and also arranged in types of dresses. Each piece will not break the bank, but it's also not in the forever 21 or H & M price range, just fyi, though it's also not in the thousands, so you get the idea. I spent no more than $200-ish for each dress--and they are hand made, meticulously cut and sewn with the most vibrant colors and patterns ever. If color is not your jam, they also have more neutral colors like khaki and navy. The service can't be beat and neither can the central location. read more

In addition to what she stocks the store with and makes herself, she was kind enough to make me (not a size she carried) two outfits for a very important wedding. I stopped in here today because I was drawn to the chiffon jackets in the window with recycled textiles from Japan on the neckline and sleeves. I love what the owner is doing here, repurposing vintage Japanese textiles and making something new and unique. I ended up purchasing a stunning vintage Naga Haori, which is such a treasure. Yasuko, like the nearby Persimmon, offers a taste of the Pacific Rim. The owners are friendly and personable. They have beautiful clothing crafted from Japanese textiles including those of kimonos. While it's very high end, they do offer gifts at reasonable prices. They even have whimsical socks with Hokusai's Great Wave&other Japanese motifs. A serene little spot, very Zen. read more

I have a terrible time finding clothes that look and feel right for me -- a 50-something professional woman who likes to look put-together without fussiness and with some originality. So I LOVE Yasuko. I never have a problem finding wonderful, somewhat unusual, lovely and well-made clothes there. I purchased a gorgeous kimono...one of a kind...just loved it...they sent me home with the basting thread still in it and I am terrified of taking the ones on the sleeves out since they are tiny and would be devastated if I had damaged the piece. I have never gone home with a garment still having the basting thread in...yes it tells me that it was most likely hand sewn which I didn't doubt but now I have to take it to a professional to have the thread taken out which will cost me more money...I purchased 12/28/2012 and still haven't worn...sad to have such a wonderful garment and might add one that I have always wanted and be so disappointed on how I felt when I took it home.....If this is how they sell unfinished garments I probably wouldn't return..and if someone does wander in be prepared to bring home not ready to wear it garment but one that you need to either send out or take out thread at YOUR OWN RISK.... read more
