Before I start this review I want to state that I've been to Japan several times and had a lot of different cuisines there. Yatagarasu theme, music and location is that of a real Japanese restaurant which is really nice since we don't get those in Indiana unless a big Japanese company is near by. the food is very close to that of Japan when it comes to quality. It's easily the best ramen restaurant and most authentic. The upstairs bar doesn't exactly fit the Japanese Izakaya theme but more of a club but that's fine. If you want real Japanese Ramen or just real Japanese food in general then this restaurant is the place to be. Even it's location is similar to finding a ramen shop in the ally ways of Japan which is pretty cool. read more

Went for lunch a week ago...Food is really good. I am not a fan of pork belly (unless it is bacon) so I had the vegetable ramen bowl. Son had a tonkatsu ramen bowl with the pork. He let me try a meaty part of the pork and it was good. We also shared the tempura style chicken. The ramen bowls were on point with great depth of flavor. can't have enuf asian choices in my little town!! yata is the latest entry. interesting restaurant downstairs/quiet bar upstairs during the day, moving into just a bar later in the evening. i started with a tasty triad sampler raw seafood salad of squid and octopus..... firm, yet tender, each delicious in its own dressing the ramen i chose was paitan spicy.... had a hearty broth and lots of tasty ingredients to compliment the tender noodles. i am still new to the raman world, so don't care much about tradition or travesty. i'm trying everyone's ramen, and enjoying the adventure. probably dine with ordering noodle soup in most amer-chinese restaurants, tho..... no character like the ramen broths that i have discovered. read more

Super cool restaurant and bar! The interior is super fun and has a great vibe in both the bar and dining area. The momo oolong is DELICIOUS. A must have. I also really appreciate the banners and paper umbrellas the upstairs bar area is decorated with. Yatagarasu's Bloomington location is still in its "soft opening" period, and I'll preface this review by saying I'm pretty spoiled in the way of Japanese food so maybe have unfair expectations. The place feels nice and the servers were charming and attentive, although I think they're maybe having to operate without a host, which isn't a great situation for any wait staff. Hopefully management won't leave them in that boat for long. The food was a little hit and miss. I tried the Tonkotsu Miso Ramen, which was pretty tasty although I agree with another reviewer that at the price point (at least here in the midwest), there should have been more protein. I also don't think it was proper bone broth... That said, I liked the flavor and cook of the pork. I'll definitely try the ramen again, and probably try a different variety. I also tried some yakitori and karaage, both of which were decidedly not as great. The yakitori came out simultaneously overcooked and under temperature... I don't think it was freshly prepared. It was also underseasoned. The karaage, I think in an effort to make it appear plentiful, was undersized and hence overcooked - which is hard to do to thighs, and not so great. Worse, it was inconsistently sized, and so the (even) smaller pieces were cooked to death. I would strongly recommend the same total weight, but cut into larger (traditionally) sized pieces. All this said, I will definitely return and try other dishes - it's a good addition to Bloomington, and for someone who hasn't been spoiled eating in Japan and New York a lot, I doubt they'd be as critical. read more

My girlfriend and I visit this place almost every other day. I highly recommend it. Compared to other Bloomington restaurants the theme of the place and the food feel very authentic. Compared to Japanese ramen bars in Tokyo I would say the food and atmosphere is on par with its oversea counterparts. Great food and great staff. I recommend the Chashu Don for any rice and meat lovers. read more

I wish I could give zero stars. Group of us ate here (4), and 3 of us got ramen. It was tasteless, bland, and had very few pieces of toppings. Mostly noodles. The other person ate Gyoza and something like chicken tempura. This person got food poisoning within the hour, had to be in the bathroom 6 times within the next hour and a half. I called the restaurant, and both the manager and owner denied that their food could have been made the person sick. They demanded a doctors note before they'd even consider compensation or refund for the extremely over-priced food. I would NEVER go back. Horrible customer service. read more

This place is a hidden gem. I never expected to taste food this good and authentic. I started with their fried calamari, which had so much spice and flavor. The only problem was that they didn't give me enough of it. The spicy garlic ramen was the star of the show. Again, my only problem was the bowl wasn't big enough. My sister and I came here on a Wednesday night and it was pretty dead, the food was pretty good but the service was very disappointing. Our waitress was very rude. She was not welcoming at all and made us feel very uncomfortable. I hope the service does get better as we loved this place despite the service. read more

It's a shame Yelp won't allow 6 stars for a restaurant because this place deserves it. Crispy Brussel sprouts and gyoza were fantastic (do yourself a favor and get the Brussel sprouts) and the Tonkotsu Miso Spicy Ramen is slightly spicy but totally manageable (so so so freaking good).
